Martin Faga’s story on page 3 is a heartfelt account of his experience at MVH. On behalf of patients and families like Martin’s, who come to MVH seeking health and comfort, I want to thank you for your part in the ongoing success of the MVH Foundation. Your contribution is meaningful and very much appreciated. In this year end issue of Insight, we have a report on the spectacular gala marking the opening of Miami Valley South Health Center. It was a very special evening when more than 730 people gathered in celebration of the wonderful new medical facility in Centerville. We also highlight an open house at the Bull Family Diabetes Center as its patient services are expanded in a new location. Our thanks and congratulations to Jean Bull and her family on this latest expression of their generosity and commitment to diabetes patients. There is also a remembrance of one of the area’s outstanding physicians and a guiding influence on the MVH Foundation, Dr. Junius Cromartie, Jr. Once again, please accept our sincere thanks for your generosity and trust in our stewardship of your contribution. Whether you have come to know the Foundation through our special events or through a personal experience with the hospital, we thank you for your compassion and thoughtfulness in helping to expand the Margin of Excellence for patients, families and staff at MVH. On behalf of the board of trustees and staff of the Foundation, we wish you the very best for the holiday season and the upcoming new year. I wouldn’t be alive...” M artin Faga was visiting relatives in Dayton when he suffered a heart attack in the early morning hours of July 14. He was rushed to the Emergency Department at Miami Valley Hospital where he received immediate treatment. Upon his recovery, Mr. Faga wrote to Mary Boosalis about his experience. His heartfelt and insightful letter became the centerpiece of the Foundation’s annual fall fundraising campaign. In his letter, Mr. Faga wrote about the human touch he received from the physicians, nurses, staff and volunteers at MVH. He commented further on his experience in a telephone interview excerpted here: “Without question, the speed and skill with which the hospital sped me through the stages of treatment saved my life,” he recalled. “If I were in a lesser hospital, I wouldn’t be alive.” During his initial recovery in the Coronary Intensive Care Unit, he was unable to speak. “As an intensive care patient, you are totally dependent on the expertise of that nurse - and you are also pretty anxious - so their responsiveness and compassion means a heck of a lot,” he remembered. “The nurses always took the time to explain about their procedures and the various monitors. They always asked if I was comfortable or needed anything which made me feel confident they were carefully attending to me.” When the time came to get up and moving, (with incisions in his leg and chest as a result of his surgery), Mr. Faga was visited by the Lift Team. “It was less of a strain on me and on the nurses when the Lift Team was there,” he recalled. “I was almost shocked by the friendliness and helpfulness of every member of the staff. This was true of technicians, physicians, students, nurses – everyone without exception.” A retired executive from the nonprofit agency, MITRE, Mr. Faga has surveyed many organizations over the years to gauge their professional strengths and weaknesses. “Something I have seen in well-run organizations, I saw throughout the hospital,” he said. “People in highperforming organizations show mutual respect for one another. For instance, many nurses told me that they feel respected by the doctors and the administration, and how much they appreciated the educational opportunities the hospital made available to them.” As a United Way board member in the Washington D.C. area, he is appreciative of people who give of their time and money. “There are all kinds of charitable needs in every community,” he says. “I think a non-profit hospital is what you want. It creates a very different attitude within the organization, and, by its very definition, it exists to provide the services it was created for, not to make a profit.” He summed up his MVH experience this way: “I observed great care throughout the hospital the entire time I was there. Miami Valley Hospital is everything you would hope that a first rate hospital would be.” Martin Faga’s story truly illustrates the meaning of the Margin of Excellence – to go above and beyond clinical expertise to care for patients’ needs and comfort. We sincerely thank him for sharing his personal story with us, and we wish him a speedy recovery in excellent health. Martin Faga Insight •December, 2007 3 Miami Valley South T GALA Legacy of Giving Extended to South Campus Benefits Patient Programs his fall has been a very special time for friends and supporters of Miami Valley Hospital. The Foundation’s gala celebration honoring the opening of Miami Valley South Health Center took place on September 29 with more than 730 guests in attendance. The gala’s theme – ‘We’re Branching Out’ - captured the beauty of the natural setting as well as the expansion of MVH outpatient services to Centerville and the surrounding Drs. Deanna and Steven Chapman. Deanna Chapman co-chaired the event. area. Thanks to the generous support of the patrons, sponsors and donors, the gala raised some $98,000 to benefit patient programs at Miami Valley South and at the Wyoming Street campus. The evening was highlighted by an outstanding dinner prepared by the hospital’s Nutrition Services department. The celebration included a sports bar area, a dance floor with live music from Laika, and tours of the new facility led by clinical staff who would open the doors of the new facility in mid-October. MVH President and CEO Mary Boosalis welcomed guests by referring to the facility as “the newest example of our commitment to build healthier communities. This is a very special weekend in our wonderful history of providing outstanding care for the people of Dayton and the region.” Special thanks to the gala committee which was chaired by Deanna Chapman, DPM, and Mary Nutter. Many thanks are also in order to the generous sponsors who made this evening so memorable and elegant. (They are listed on page 5.) Dr. Michael and Susan Craig. Dr. Craig chairs the MVH Board of Trustees and Mrs. Craig co-chaired the Patron Table committee with Wendy Scholl. The contribution will go toward outfitting the center’s full-service Emergency Department. In making the gift, Ms. Veitch said she wanted to make a final contribution to Dayton and to the hospital in memory of her parents. We are grateful to Ms. Veitch for her remarkable donation, and for continuing the proud legacy of charitable giving established by her parents nearly two decades ago. Their gifts will serve patients and families for decades to come. Insight •December, 2007 5 Unique Contributions Highlight Miami Valley South Prior to the completion of the new center, several generous donations were made to the project through the Foundation. One of the more unique contributions will be the children’s library, “Abby’s Nook,” at the Emergency Department’s entrance. Created through a gift from KarinLeigh Spicer and Edward Blake, the library will be themed in honor of the family cat and will house pre-school through third grade books for children and their parents to read while waiting for medical services. A puzzle book and a coloring book highlighting Abby and some of the medical experiences children may encounter, are being developed. A retired professor and author of children’s stories, Karin will provide hands-on guidance for the library. Ed currently serves as the chair of the Foundation’s board of trustees. The gorgeous baby grand piano in the lobby was graciously donated by Marilyn Hauer-Crotty, and Don and Jerry Hauer in honor of Michael and Ann Hauer, founders of Hauer Music House. The renowned music and instrument store has been a downtown Dayton institution since 1937. Al and Marilyn Dunn. (Left to right) Judi Weber, Foundation Emeritus Trustee Jim Payne, Sherlynn and Gary LeRoy, MD, and Olivia Hester, director of Volunteer Services at MVH. The flagpole in front of the facility was donated by Al and Marilyn Dunn. The Dunns are longtime supporters and advocates of the hospital and the Foundation. A World War II veteran, Mr. Dunn served on the hospital’s board of trustees from 1977 to 1985 and was instrumental in establishing the CareFlight program. The inscription at the base of the flagpole reads: “Raise our flag to peace and liberty. Mr. and Mrs. Allistair Dunn.” Pavers, Benches and Trees Many thanks are also in order to the donors who bought commemorative pavers, benches and trees to be placed at the South Health Center. More than 230 pavers were purchased along with several benches and trees. The proceeds will go to benefit future patient programs and services at both the South and Wyoming Street campuses. Insight •December, 2007 7 Bull Family Diabetes Center Expands A n open house celebration took place on December 5 in honor of the expansion and relocation of the Bull Family Diabetes Center. Located in the Wright Health Building at the corner of Stewart Street and Patterson Boulevard, the expanded center will provide comprehensive diabetes care in a more convenient location. Among those in an attendance were Mrs. Jean Bull, her son John Jr., and grandson Eric, along with Medical Director Miguel Parilo, MD, FACP, and Heidi Buckingham, MD, who head up the medical staff at the center. The Bull Family Diabetes Center operates as a comprehensive physician practice, allowing patients access to the medical expertise of two fully-certified medical specialists, certified diabetes educators (that are registered nurses and registered dieticians), and advanced practice nurses who serve at MVH and the Bull Family Diabetes Center. The center was established by Jean Bull in memory of her son, Stephen, who passed away at age 40 from diabetes, and for her husband, John, who also passed away from the effects of diabetes. With her contribution through the MVH Foundation, Jean turned her grief into a living memorial that will improve the lives of countless diabetes patients for years to come. For more information, or to schedule an appointment, call the Bull Family Diabetes Center at (937) 2089090. Pictured left to right at the reception are John Jr., Eric and Jean Bull, Heidi Buckingham, MD, and Miguel A. Parilo, MD. Insight •Miami Valley Hospital Foundation Eric (left) and John Bull, Jr. with Jean Bull Services Provided by the Bull Family Diabetes Center Inpatient Diabetes Education – Certified diabetes educators work with patients admitted to the hospital with a diabetes diagnosis. The goal is to cover survival skills and to bridge from the hospital visit to diabetes maintenance outside the hospital. Inpatient Consultation and Clinical Management – Studies show that 25 percent of patients admitted to MVH have a primary or secondary diagnosis of diabetes. The inpatient team works with the patient’s physicians and the patient to provide blood sugar control. At discharge, the inpatient management team presents an updated report to the patient’s primary care physician about the patient’s hospital stay and their diabetes management. Outpatient Education – The center offers a variety of self-management diabetes education classes on skill development and problem-solving for common diabetes situations. The plan will allow the patient to make informed choices and take better care of one’s self. It is important for the person with diabetes to be knowledgeable and skilled to care for their diabetes as it is the patient who makes most of the day-to-day decisions. Suzy’s Bears Bring Smiles A rainy September day did not dampen the enthusiasm at the annual golf outing in memory of Suzy Pender. Proceeds from the tournament, which raised $4,080 this year, provide funds for the purchase of teddy bears for young MVH patients. The bears have t-shirts recognizing the gift from the Pender tournament. Our thanks to Suzy’s parents, William and Reta Pender, and to the tournament’s organizing committee: Amy Fry, Matt Hayden, Carey Ann Israel, Karen Israel, Deb Kinderdine, Nikki Stroop and Patty Waker. Be A Good DLM Neighbor A percentage of your grocery bill can benefit MVH when you enroll in Dorothy Lane Market’s Good Neighbor Program. Participants must use a Club DLM card and spend at least $250 in calendar year 2008. (The market will rebate up to 1 percent of the purchases made up to a maximum of $75,000 for all participating charities.) For more details please call Dorothy Lane Market at 439-7210, or the Foundation office at 208-2700. Charitable IRA Rollover Reminder Last year Congress passed legislation which included a one-time provision for qualified charitable contributions from Individual Retirement Accounts. The law allows IRA and Roth IRA owners (who are at least 70 1/2 years of age) to donate up to $100,000 directly to a qualified public charity — without counting it as income or paying income tax. This opportunity is only available through December 31, 2007. In addition, the charitable distribution counts toward minimum distribution requirements, and IRA charitable distributions may be made in addition to other charitable giving. As always, we suggest you consult with your financial or tax advisor to determine if this plan is advantageous to you. We are happy to assist you with any preliminary questions you may have. Please give us a call at 937208-2700 or email Beth Hutter at ebhutter@mvh.org. We will be happy to hear from you! New Berry Pavilion Entrance Beginning this fall, women arriving in labor will enter the Berry Women’s H e a l t h Pa v i l i o n through a temporary entrance on Wyoming Street. The covered temporary entrance may also be used as a dropoff/pick-up point for other patients and visitors with limited mobility. The temporary entrance change is necessitated by construction of additional space for the NICU over the old main entrance. (Employees, medical staff and visitors walking from the main garage can continue to enter the Berry Pavilion through the ambulance entrance on Magnolia Street.) The pavilion’s main entrance is scheduled to reopen in about 12 months. In other construction news on the main campus, the hospital’s newest restaurant, the Valley Café, opened in November. Located near the newly renovated lobby in the main building, the Valley Café offers quickly prepared foods and grab and go items for customers in a hurry. With room for up to 86 dine-in guests, the new restaurant is designed to meet customers’ preference for a wide variety of foods and healthier choices. The Valley Café is open from 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., seven days a week. Insight •December, 2007 9 In Recognition of Jeanne Eickman Dr. and Mrs. Gary H. Ensor In Recognition of Gyn-Oncology Dept.
