R E V E L IN THE SOUND REFLECTING ON THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY SVSUMMERSYMPHONY.ORG 2014 SEASON ELEVATE YOUR SENSES PRESIDENT’S LETTER 30TH ANNIVERSARY REASONS TO CELEBRATE Much has transpired in thirty years. As the Sun Valley Summer Symphony orchestra grew from 22 musicians to 114, so, too, did the audience and the generosity of the Sun Valley community. A quick look back at the last 30 years reveals: MOVING FROM THE ELKHORN GREEN TO THE TENT ON THE SUN VALLEY ESPLANADE TO THE GLORIOUS SUN VALLEY PAVILION. FROM A RENTED PIANO TO THE PURCHASE OF SUN VALLEY SUMMER SYMPHONY’S VERY OWN JEANYVES THIBAUDET STEINWAY. THE ADDITION OF THE BIG SCREEN ON THE SUN VALLEY PAVILION LAWN. FIVE COMMISSIONED WORKS SERVING TO BRING NEW COMPOSITIONS INTO THE CLASSICAL MUSIC LITERATURE, INCLUDING A WORK FOR THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY, DEVIL’S RADIO, BY MASON BATES. After five years on the Board of Directors, I am flattered and humbled by the opportunity to serve the Sun Valley Summer Symphony as President, following in the footsteps of its many influential leaders. Maggie Sturdevant, my predecessor, has left this organization in excellent shape – thank you! PRESENTATION OF EIGHT WORLD PREMIERE PERFORMANCES OF NEW COMPOSITIONS. AS WELL AS THE CREATION OF THE SUMMER MUSIC WORKSHOPS IN 1998, THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC IN 2001 AND THE POPULAR ADULT EDUCATION LECTURES, “UPBEAT WITH ALASDAIR” IN 2006. As I enter my term as President of this inspiring institution, I am most grateful for the appreciative audience, the generous housing hosts, the many donors and volunteers, as well as the staff who make the season happen. Together, you keep the music free for everyone. JIM MOBERG PRESIDENT Opportunities abound to support the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. As an Encore Society member, I and other members have committed legacy gifts to ensure that future audiences will enjoy free music. This spring, John and Carole Moran created the John A. and Carole Moran Artist Fund to continue to bring top-quality guest artists to the Pavilion. These kinds of gifts are so important, and they serve to boost the equally important Annual Fund drive that provisions both the festival and yearround educational programs. Project Tf3 creates a new and unique giving opportunity. This multi-year project blends commission work, residency, and music education in an exciting new format with Sun Valley’s favorite trio, Time for Three, at the center of it all. See page seven for a complete picture. The planning for an engaging 2015 season is well underway. Keep an eye on svsummersymphony.org in the new year for updates and announcements regarding the 31st season. It is my hope that you will continue to enjoy, and support, the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. This orchestra is here for you, and because of you. Thank you all, MESSAGE FROM ALASDAIR One thing is clear to me after this summer: the Sun Valley Summer Symphony definitely knows how to throw a birthday party! I am sure you will all have your own personal highlights from the season. I would like to share one of mine with you, and it might come as something of a surprise, given the A-list cavalcade of stars that graced the stage this year. ALASDAIR NEALE SUN VALLEY SUMMER SYMPHONY MUSIC DIRECTOR It was the concert that took place on August 12, a program consisting of Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1 with Joshua Roman, and Strauss’s Till Eulenspiegel. Mother Nature was again in a petulant mood that day, throwing yet another deluge at us late in the afternoon that resulted in a power cut running much of the length of the valley about an hour before the concert. Executive Director Jennifer Teisinger and her crack team leapt into action, following various emergency protocols established after the fires of 2013. By concert time, the audience and orchestra had assembled at the Pavilion, but it was far from clear what might happen next. Two vital commodities needed to play were in short and diminishing supply: light and heat. Despite these significant impediments, the orchestra spontaneously decided to proceed with the concert, knowing that the conditions would make their task exceedingly difficult. Many, if not most, orchestras would have thrown in the towel — understandably. Not the Sun Valley Summer Symphony, whose professionalism and dedication shone through like a beacon. I could not have been more proud of the musicians or the audience that night, because they exemplified the esprit de corps that is this orchestra’s trademark, a precious commodity for which I am immensely grateful. Onward to 2015! SHARING OUR STORY MADE IN AMERICA It takes 129 volunteers, 3 interns and 25 seasonal and year-round staff, plus 17 dedicated Board Members and 114 musicians, to bring you this truly wonderful music festival. 96 housing hosts open their homes to musicians and their families, and many musicians use rental housing in the Valley. 72 local businesses and individuals offer In Kind donations to enhance the experience of musicians and staff. 21 PRODUCTION PEOPLE WORK TIRELESSLY TO MAKE THIS THE BEST MUSIC FESTIVAL IN THE COUNTRY. SHOWN HERE IS SOUND DESIGNER BRIAN MOHR Then there are the 927 supporters who gave 1,141 gifts that magically turned into the Sun Valley Summer Symphony 30th Anniversary Season. 60 children were entertained (and gently educated) at the free Kids’ Music Tent, courtesy of Kindermusik with Lisa Pettit, while parents enjoyed the orchestra concerts. There are 1,561 pavilion seats, with an average of 1,041 seats available for general seating at orchestra concerts and room for over 5,000 people on the lawn. GOLDEN NOTE AWARD 2014 Ed and Connie McGowan are the recipients of the 2014 Golden Note award, which seeks to honor exemplary volunteers and their dedication and commitment to the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. Connie served on the Symphony staff as Seating Coordinator for many years. Upon retiring from the Symphony she, and Ed, continue to serve as volunteer Pavilion ushers. They have served for more than 18 years. Ed and Connie have been a terrific team, seeing the Symphony through many challenges and bringing their friends in to help. Connie devised a seating plan that is still in use today, and she and Ed are directly responsible for Sally Horn coming on as the current Seating Liaison. No strangers to the wild weather that can occur in August, Ed and Connie helped put down boards and planks at the tent entry so concertgoers would not have to walk through mud puddles to reach a seat! When lightning threatened, they made sure concertgoers were safely away from the tent poles. Seats were unnumbered then — and stickers had to be placed on chairs and removed after each performance — tedious work done with a pleasant attitude by Ed and Connie. Your dedication of time and expertise, as well as your grace under pressure, has made the Sun Valley Summer Symphony the wonderful classical music festival it is today. Thank you, Ed and Connie. Beginning with the In Focus Series on July 28, Music Director Alasdair Neale used the theme “Made in America” as a programming springboard. From Higdon’s picturesque and moving Southern Harmony, to the driving commissioned work by Mason Bates, Devil’s Radio, to the wildly American presentation of Pixar in Concert, the season was as inspiring as it was unpredictable. As a salute to 30 years of free classical music, the Symphony season ended with the finale concert, Copland’s Symphony No. 3. New technology from SightLine allowed pavilion attendees to view the lawn’s Big Screen on an iPad, while simultaneously viewing the orchestra! Look for more exciting technology in 2015. “LAST NIGHT’S CONCERT FEATURING THE VERY APPEALING NEW MUSIC OF MASON BATES COMBINED WITH THE WELL-LOVED BRUCH VIOLIN CONCERTO WAS MUSICAL HEAVEN FOR ME. I TRULY LOOK FORWARD TO THE THREE WEEKS OF SUMMER SYMPHONY ALL YEAR LONG.” — MARTHA JENNINGS ENCORE SOCIETY MEMBERS ENJOYED A SPECIAL POST CONCERT GATHERING IN HONOR OF THEIR COMMITMENT TO THE FUTURE OF THE SUN VALLEY SUMMER SYMPHONY AND TO FREE MUSIC FOR ALL. FROM THE OPENING TO THE CLOSING WHAT DID YOU LIKE THE MOST? “The orchestra, the setting, the music, and Alasdair Neale, who makes it all work!” “The beautiful music-the wonderful variety of each evening-the ease of getting into our seats and the friendliness of everyone, especially the volunteers.” “The music!” “New instruments, new music, new musicians but still a few of the known. Great year!” “What a thrill about the new Steinway piano. It sounds extraordinary!” “Congratulations on a beautifully planned and executed 30th Anniversary Season. What riches you presented to the Wood River Valley.” “I want to extend a big thank-you to all the volunteers who keep everyone moving and find places for all. They are always smiling, respectful and a big help!” “Introduction to new ways of thinking of classical music.” 2014 GUEST ARTISTS THANK YOU STEINWAY CONSORTIUM GRAND DONORS ANONYMOUS MARTINE AND DAN DRACKETT WODECROFT FOUNDATION KEY DONORS MICHAEL & CHRIS BOSKIN AND THE KORET FOUNDATION ANNE & JAMES CRUMPACKER AND THE ELIZABETH POWNALL SWINDELLS FAMILY FUND OF THE OREGON COMMUNITY FOUNDATION MICHAEL & CAROLE MARKS SUSAN & JOHN MONSON BOB & GAIL SMELICK JEAN-YVES THIBAUDET DEBUTED THE STEINWAY HE PERSONALLY CHOSE FOR THE SUN VALLEY SUMMER SYMPHONY, AND THAT BEARS HIS NAME, TO A RAPT AUDIENCE ON AUGUST 6. Perhaps no student dreams of practicing for hours. However when orchestra members and conductors mentor students, when world-renowned sopranos and violinists take their questions seriously, and when dedicated instructors teach with passion, learning is exciting and practice easier. 70% of you loved the music — and 12% of you noticed the 53% donate to keep the concerts free to everyone — stunning scenery, too! Thank you so much. In collaboration with the Sun Valley Summer Symphony and the Blaine County School District, the School of Music teaches 200+ elementary, secondary, and high school students each year. As a result, there is an unprecedented number of musicians in the Wood River High School orchestra and the addition of a second string orchestra class has been added to accommodate them. 66% of high school orchestra members began their studies in the Sun Valley Summer Symphony School of Music Outreach Program. STUDENTS IN THE SCHOOL OF MUSIC CORE, DEVELOPMENTAL, OR OUTREACH PROGRAMS 2,431 HOURS OF INSTRUCTION WERE TAUGHT BY SCHOOL OF MUSIC STAFF — AND THIS IMPROMPTU SESSION WITH VIOLINIST JOSHUA BELL WAS AN IMMEASURABLE GIFT SCHOOL OF MUSIC CORE PROGRAMS TEACH STRING, VOICE, AND PIANO THE DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAM TEACHES VOICE AND STRING ENSEMBLE FOR UP TO 9TH GRADE STUDENTS SCHOOL OUTREACH PROGRAMS INVOLVE HIGH SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY STUDENTS SUMMER MUSIC WORKSHOPS’ CONCERT CHOIR PERFORMS FOR A QUICKLY ASSEMBLED ON-STAGE AUDIENCE IN LIEU OF SITTING IN THE DRENCHED SEATING AREA IN THE SUN VALLEY PAVILION. A total 27% of happy concertgoers noted “don’t change a thing, we like it all!” 9% of respondents were not quite sure if Pops night was really Pops! 8% think there are not enough seats in the Pavilion. Yet there are over 1,000 Pavilion seats available for every orchestra concert — 59% of all seats on average. IDAHO MUSIC EDUCATION ASSOCIATION TRIUMPHS NINE SCHOOL OF MUSIC STUDENTS PERFORMED IN ALL-STATE CONFERENCE ENSEMBLES FIVE SCHOOL OF MUSIC STUDENTS PLAYED IN STATE SOLO COMPETITION SUMMER MUSIC WORKSHOPS A week full of coaching, instruction and performance for beginning, intermediate and premier students, complete with nine concerts and solo recitals. There were 228 total students with 197 students in the General Workshops and 31 students in the Premier Program (advanced strings and voice). A few of you would like to see fewer high-back chairs on the lawn, a quieter lawn audience and “less sunshine on concert seats.” Half of respondents attended the In Focus Series; 11% of you for the first time. AMAZING FACTS 51 faculty members, 21 of whom are Sun Valley Summer Symphony orchestra musicians, gave instruction throughout the Workshops. Students received over 625 hours of instructions in eight days and performed for nine events. THE BEST ANSWER OF ALL, TO THE QUESTION: WHAT DID YOU NOT LIKE? — “THE END OF THE SEASON” PHOTO CREDITS Thia Konig Photography Studio, Nils Ribi, Caroline Woodham Photography Parking, lines, and crowds are unlikeable to many respondents. However, parking is free, lines are relatively short, and the crowd is well-dressed and fun to watch — what more can one ask for at a glorious free orchestra concert in a fantastic, if somewhat unpredictable, open-air venue? CAROL NIE OUTSTANDING MUSIC STUDENT AWARD WINNER LUKE VERST Luke attends Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington, majoring in music and taking pre-med courses. He is studying violin with Dr. Philip Baldwin and participating in the University orchestra and chamber music ensembles. Luke is very grateful for the School of Music and his instructors who have inspired his musical studies. Nine Summer Music Workshops students are children of Symphony orchestra musicians. Students participated in the first ever side-by-side concert featuring Premier Program string students playing directly next to orchestra musicians while conducted by Symphony Assistant Conductor Ankush Bahl. “PLAYING MUSIC IS A GIFT. YOU PLAY WHAT YOU FEEL; IT IS A SPECIAL WAY TO EXPRESS YOURSELF.” — LUKE VERST PROJECT TF3 2014 FACTS AND FIGURES If you didn’t hear them in 2012, you may have been at their July 29 concert in 2014. Still missed them? Well, you have three more years to catch Time for Three with the Sun Valley Summer Symphony through Project Tf3. WHAT IS PROJECT TF3? Project Tf3 is an innovative multi-year partnership between Time for Three and the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. It has three parts: residency, commission, and education. Just like Time for Three, this project is different, fresh and very exciting. For the next three years, Time for Three will make regular trips to Sun Valley (2-3 times each year) to compose, perform and work with Blaine County students. Their compositions are commissioned by the Sun Valley Summer Symphony and will be premiered each summer in 2015, 2016, and 2017. Time for Three is a trio comprised of Zachary (Zach) De Pue, violin; Nicolas (Nick) Kendall, violin; and Ranaan Meyer, double bass. This ensemble defies traditional classification like “trio” or “band.” But, in an attempt to explain their unique sound and approach to classical music, they have been dubbed “the world’s first classicallytrained garage band.” Time for Three is fresh, spontaneous and phenomenally talented. Their energy leaps off the stage, into your heart and reminds you why music matters. Ranaan, Nick and Zach are more than gifted performers. They are composers, arrangers and entertainers. Their portfolio includes arrangements of classical melodies, bluegrass and jazz improvisation, indie-rock and pop songs. Time for Three has been performing together for just over 10 years as a trio, with orchestras, and with special guest artists. programs. No gift is too small (or too big!) to be a part of Project Tf3. It’s new, different, creative and FUN! For more information and to make a pledge, contact Jennifer Teisinger, Executive Director at 208.622.5607. THE 2015 PROJECT TF3 NEW WORK Nick and Ranaan of Time for Three were in Sun Valley in early October composing the melodies for a new 50 minute composition. This new work, written for full symphony orchestra, will feature Time for Three as the solo artists and will be premiered on August 4, 2015. This is the longest piece of music the Sun Valley Summer Symphony has ever commissioned — a first! RESIDENCY Project Tf3 is more than commissioning new works and creating new shows. Time for Three will compose while in residence in Sun Valley, where they will become a part of our community. They will stay with housing hosts, shop and eat locally and will perform in the community, too. EDUCATION Nick Kendall, Ranaan Meyer and Zach De Pue are prodigious musicians, gifted collaborators and spontaneous improvisers. They are also educators. They have performed over 1,000 in-school concerts, have private teaching studios and are firm believers in the value of inspiring young people. BE A PART OF IT! The first week of March 2015, Time for Three will showcase their innovative and improvisational style in Blaine County and independent schools. Time for Three will work with school music students, and a small ensemble of string players from the Sun Valley Summer Symphony School of Music. They will then follow this School of Music ensemble over the next three years so that our young musicians are growing up with Nick, Ranaan and Zach as mentors. Rarely does a Residency Project have such a long-term intimate impact on a select group of young musicians. Project Tf3 requires additional funds beyond the scope of the Symphony’s all-important Annual Fund which supports the festival and year-round education During their summer residency, Time for Three will work with advanced music students enrolled in the Sun Valley Summer Symphony Summer Music Workshops. Time for Three has a vision, that with the rise of young, classically trained musicians who play non-classical music, symphony orchestras will begin to program groups like Time for Three as part of a core master works or classical series which will begin to challenge the notion of what classical music really is. World-class live music continues to be admission free because of your generous, ongoing support of the Sun Valley Summer Symphony. The 2014 fiscal year ended with a shortfall due to celebratory 30th anniversary events. This shortfall is the first in the Symphony’s 30 year history and is covered by Reserve Funds which have been maintained by a long history of careful fiduciary responsibility.
