B OB’S C USTOM S ADDLE
The list of professionals riding Bob’s Custom Saddles is
long and distinguished. It includes the most accomplished
champions in the business. These pros could choose to ride
any saddle in the world. They ride Bob’s for the most important reason of all - the saddle gives them the best chance
of winning.
"I grew up in California on my grandfather's thoroughbred
ranch, Rancho Casitas. He raised about 100 foals per year
and ran about 2500 to 3000 head of cattle. Our 200 head
of horses were spread over several hundred acres and the
pens were large -- 20 acres or more. At the age of three, I
began riding with my parents on horseback. It was wonderful to grow up with the mares and foals. I especially enjoyed
watching the horses run -- their spirits free as they raced
across the open terrain," says Bob Haley.
Bob's love for horses continued into his adulthood. He
showed horses for several years, primarily competing in the
West Coast AHSA show circuit. He won Reserve Champion National Cowhorse in California on a mare named Little Clara. Bob also competed in other events such as
Western Pleasure, Western Equitation, Reining, Stock
Horse, Trail, and Cow Horse. Among these events, Bob
says he loved reining the most.
"My experience showing horses taught me that the closest
and safest position on a horse was at the withers. This position allows you to move with the horse even when the
horse decides to do a 180 degree turn," says Bob.
"Knowing that position is essential to performance. I have
designed each of our saddles to place you close to the pocket
created by the horse's shoulders and withers. The ground
seat in our saddles puts you, when fit without a saddle pad,
close to the horse's back. Our fenders are designed to hang
directly beneath you and allows you to sit up directly over
your feet and maintain your balance even when you stand
up in your stirrups or sit straight down. Any other design
would tip your torso, thus changing the position of your
thigh and preventing you from having the maximum ability
to swing your legs forward or back," he continues.

T REES
The tree is the foundation of your saddle and all Bob’s Custom Saddles are
built using hand built wood trees wrapped in rawhide. All of these trees fit
the majority of today’s performance horses. There are occasionally difficult to fit horses that require a more specific tree design. We’re happy to
discuss those issues with you and find the right solution.

Seat Selection is one of the most important issues for a rider. Although
the variations are slight, they can make a significant difference in the
communication between horse and rider.
CALIFORNIA SEAT
The California seat features the deep pocket design in which the
seat carries all the way up the swell and creates a secure feeling
while still allowing for the proper position and movement of the
legs. It also has one of the narrowest feels of all the seats and can
be made to feel extra narrow by selecting the double narrow
padded option. The California seat is used in the Duane Latimer,
Tanya Jenkins, Doug Milholland and Jordan Larson saddles.
CALIFORNIA/CUTTER SEAT
Lady Reiner • KR Reiner
The California/Cutter, like the California, has the narrow deep
seat feel combined with the slightly smaller Cutter seat jockey.
This seat option is preferred by a lot of smaller women.
CALIFORNIA/DL SEAT
The California/D.L. combination has the narrow, deep seat feel
of the California combined with the DL skirt. This combination
is favored by Tanya Jenkins, Duane Latimer and Jordan Larson.

CUTTER SEAT
The Cutter seat employs the open seat pocket design and as its
name implies is favored by Cutters and Cow Horse riders. The
front of the seat ends at the bottom of the swell rather than continuing on up the back of the swell. The feel is of a slightly larger
and flatter seat. Ted Robinson, Randy Paul, Al Dunning and
Brent Wright are among the riders who use this seat in some of
their saddle designs.
CUTTER/D.L. SEAT
The Cutter/D.L. seat combines the Cutter seat and the D.L.
skirt. Al Dunning prefers the shape of the D.L. skirt and uses
this combination on both his cowhorse and reining saddles.
D.L. SEAT
The D.L. seat is one of the all time best sellers in the Bob’s Custom line of saddles. Rising part way up the back of the swell the
seat has the semi deep pocket bridging the gap between the open,
flat seat feel of the Cutter or Fappani and the deep pocket feel of
the California. The D.L. seat is featured on may models including
the Bob Avila, Randy Paul, Todd Bergen, Pete Kyle and Craig
Schmersal.

D.P.
This seat is one of the original uses of the semi deep pocket.
FAPPANI SEAT
This seat is exclusive to the reining saddles built for Andrea Fappani by Bob Haley. It has the open pocket with the seat ending at
the bottom of the swell and a narrow feel due to the Andrea Fappani tree. This is the only saddle in the Bob’s line featuring this
combination and the result is, not surprisingly, unique.
FLARIDA SEAT
The Flarida seat is another saddle featuring the semi deep pocket.
The Flarida saddles combine this seat, the Flarida tree, skirt and
the low Mex saddle horn for a distinctive look and feel.

FT. WORTH SEAT
This is another of the open seat pocket designs and is utilized on
a number of the newer cutting saddles.
HENDRICKS SEAT
Dell Hendricks prefers the deep pocket seat with the seat riding
all the way up the back of the swell giving that secure feeling in
hard run downs, big stops and quick turn arounds. He combines
the seat with his own uniquely shaped skirt on a Brent Wright
tree with the Modified RC bars.
McQUAY SEAT
Another advocate of the deep pocket, Tim McQuay’s seat is
also built on the BW tree. The McQuay skirt varies from the
Hendricks

in either smooth or rough out finishes:

SEAT PADDING IS OFFERED IN THESE OPTIONS
SINGLE – The single padded seats use a layer of dense rubber
under the seat leather. It’s cushioned compared to a hard seat
but more firm than the double padded seats. Some riders believe the firmer surface allows for better sensitivity and feel.
DOUBLE – The double padded seat uses the layer of dense rubber with a layer of foam padding on top, thus the term “double.”
This seat is used in a large percentage of reining saddles.
SINGLE or DOUBLE “NARROW” – Either of the padded options can be made even narrower by cutting the seat leather narrower than usual. The Lady Reiner and the KR Reiner are two
models that have the double narrow seat as part of their design.
The “narrow can be included on any of the seat models.
HARDSEAT – The traditional hard seat is available in all the
seat types although it is most common in the Cutting saddles.
It is also possible to get a bicycle style insert in a hard seat.
