Fall 2014 - Tahoe YC
TAHOE YACHT CLUB OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2014 BIG SKY voted Peoples’ Choice at 42nd annual Concours d’Elegance around the Clubhouse Founded 1925 from General Manager Mariana Dye member: Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association (PICYA), I am proud to say TYC had a great summer this year! It's always so nice to visit with members we only get to see a few months out of the year. We had events for everyone and all, with our expanded Buddy Boat program (Sunfish, Lasers, stand-up paddle boards and kayaks free for members' use) especially a great success, and great comaraderie shared at the club. Let me assure you the excitement did not end on August 31. If you click on our website Calendar of Events that the Hospitality committee has put together for the coming months, you will find something always going on in the clubhouse starting with "First Friday" cocktails, "Souper Saturdays" with great speakers, a fun Halloween party and Football Sundays. I expect to see more and more people gathering around the bar to share good times with all who drop in. I know it's too soon to talk "snow" but we're also planning for many Penguin Days and, even if you don't ski, you're always welcome to join us for our Après Ski parties at the club. After a cold day in the snow, TYC Penguins like to sit around the fire, warm drink in hand, and share stories of the day. Bring along an appetizer or dessert to share with the Penguins and I guarantee you will enjoy this crowd! Sunday Football with Ryan Every Sunday afternoon throughout football season join Assistant Manager Ryan Hulstyn for NFL madness on our 80-inch HDTV, kicking off at 1:25 p.m. Ryan will be sending emails every Friday with game schedules and bar specials. The “Yot Dog” and popcorn machines will be on (and you’re welcome to bring a “tailgate” snack for all to enjoy) so bring your whole team over to the party. There'll also be trivia games, prize pool, raffles and more. Football is always better with friends. And…wear your team colors and get your first drink at half price! More ways to spend your minimum Members' annual minimum runs from January 1 through December 31. Again this year, you can apply up to $100 of any club-sponsored 2 Block & Tackle / october - december 2014 event charge toward your minimum! All bar and retail purchases also apply, in addition to advertising in Block & Tackle and renting the clubhouse for private events. (Members can book the club for only $300 cleaning fee, so consider TYC for your next birthday, anniversary, holiday or business celebration!). Don’t forget: You can always check on your billing statements, minimum balance, the club Roster, calendar or club information by simply using your secure MEMBER LOGIN at www.tahoeyc.com. If you do not remember your login credentials, give us a call at (530) 581-4700 and we’ll be happy to assist you. Josh Allen joins fall bar staff For this coming fall, expect to see Josh Allen back at the club. Josh has worked as a boat tender for TYC for the last two summers and will now join us as a bartender for the fall. Josh moved to Tahoe in 2006 from the white mountains of his native Conway, New Hampshire, to pursue a career in the ski industry. He enjoys spending as much time as possible in the outdoors, skiing, hiking, and boating so Tahoe has been the perfect home for him. Please welcome Josh next time you are at the club. Ryan Hulstyn will continue his role as Assistant Manager taking care primarily of all club events and private events; if you have any questions or suggestions regarding events, please contact Ryan at the office. More fun when you get involved! Joining TYC’s Hospitality committee is a great way to learn more about the club and make new friends. And we’re always looking for new ideas for events. Whether you have a lot or a little time to volunteer, please give us a call at (530) 581-4700 to get involved! TYC BOATIQUE stocked for cooler weather Our Boatique is full of turtlenecks, fleeces and jackets for fall and winter wear (and don’t forget, Christmas is coming)! Check it out (and our TYC sale chest which is full of “treasures”) next time you come around! And although there were weather interruptions [cancellations of both the Commodores’ and Edgewood Golf cruises], we made it through.” One other event that happened, he noted, “was not the way I wanted to go out!” That was a small fire a week before the Annual Meeting, set off by the club’s propane barbecue which staff had just returned to the storeroom after use on the deck. While the Fire Department was called, O’Rourke credited the quick actions of General Manager Mariana Dye and Assistant Manager Ryan Hulstyn in extinguishing the fire. The result was some smoke and water damage to our storage room and the downstairs restaurant…and no more barbecues on the premises. Greifenstein elected commodore for club’s 90th year Jumping ahead on the agenda, the slate of flag officers and directors, presented by O’Rourke for Nominating Committee Chair, Staff Commodore Jenny Ludwig, was unanimously approved by a voice vote of members present. Succeeding O’Rourke as commodore for the club’s 90th calendar year is Vice Commodore Fred Greifenstein, Applauded for his “short” versions of TYC’s financial reports, Greifenstein has also served as the club’s treasurer since being appointed to the board position in September 2010. Also elected to one-year terms were Rear Commodore and House Committee Chair Bruce Ells who advances to vice commodore, and Port Captain Rick Raduziner who moves to the post of rear commodore. Board Secretary Keith Mason, a director-at-large since 2011, joins the flag officer ranks as port captain. Re-elected for one-year terms as directors-at-large were Ray Landgraf, who will be taking over the duties of treasurer; Bill Mann, and Becky Arnold. Joining them as TYC’s newest directors are former Stanford faculty member and ISP/WebTV CEO, sailor and powerboater Bill Yundt, and retired school administrator Margaret Holiday, an active Membership committee member and Hospitality hostess. Completing the 11-member board will be O’Rourke’s predecessor, Dick Morton, who moves to Senior Staff Commodore, and O’Rourke who (continued next page) Comments from our newly-elected Commodore L et me start by saying I am honored and pleased to have been elected to serve as your commodore for Tahoe Yacht Club’s 90th year. I say “serve” because that’s how I see leadership positions, especially in an organization that relies so heavily on the volunteer efforts of its members. From the Board of Directors to the volunteers led by Les Schwoob at the Concours, to the members of our standing committees (Sailing, Hospitality, Membership, Nominating, etc.) and our tireless volunteers in organizing tennis, skiing, rowing, sailing and power boat activities, golf, bridge, as well as “First Fridays,” Block & Tackle, and our ever-present photographer, Sr. Staff Commodore Dick Morton, (please forgive me if I have left anyone out), this club runs on the efforts of its volunteers. I would like to thank you for your dedication and hope that I can count on your continuing efforts to make Tahoe Yacht Club the best experience possible for our members. This is also an invitation for others to join in the fun and opportunities to contribute to your club. In this volunteer organization, I know my role will be more one of leadership than control. I expect you will see, over the coming year, more involvement of all of the Board members in the running of the club. The Board already has a full plate to deal with. We believe we are in final negotiations on a lease extension, we have the aftermath of the August fire in the clubhouse storeroom to deal with, and a full program of enhancements to the clubhouse, and an upgrade to the floating stock underway. I am taking over the leadership of a strong organization. I would like to thank outgoing Commodore Tom O’Rourke, as well as the two members who have just finished their terms on the Board, Sr. Staff Commodore Bruce Block and Director Roger McGee, for all that they have done to leave us in this enviable position. I have a few ideas for changes and, I think, improvements at the club but I need your help – please send my any suggestions you may have. I have been soliciting such suggestions for the past few months and have already received a few which will be implemented. For example, there will be a focus on affordable events. After examining the 2014 accounts, we have seen that we can rely less on making a profit on social activities than we have in the past thereby absorbing most of the increased costs for food and drinks at these events. On top of this year’s terrific achievements in gaining new members, I would also like to kick off a membership retention program and a renewed effort to re-enlist our “Old Friends,” members who have left the club but who might be looking to return. I’m looking forward to our 90th (and counting) year of fun at the Lake and I hope that you are too. Fred Greifenstein, Commodore Block & Tackle / october - december 2014 3 2014 Annual Meeting Report (continued) becomes Junior Staff Commodore. Both serve one-year term as voting members. TYC Foundation leads off reports with applause “We did have a show but, on January 1, I wouldn’t have given odds on it,” Staff Commodore Rich Stout said to much applause. Stout, who serves as Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation’s secretary, explained the 42nd annual Concours could not return to Sierra Boat Company because of some terms in the contract proposed by the Carnelian Bay marina which would have jeopardized the Foundation’s 501(c)(3) status. “Obexer’s stepped up to the plate and their support and attitude couldn’t have been surpassed by anybody.” Stout commented. “The reports we’re getting about the move to the Homewood marina are very encouraging. Are we going to be there next year?” The answer was an emphatic “We hope so!” Staff Commodore Doug Ball, TYCF treasurer, reported the gate exceeded its $60,000 budget. “Although we were short on personal sponsorships this year, our revenue figures were where we wanted them,” Ball said. “There were a lot of unknowns going into a new marina after 20 years. One is the cost of removing the crossover bridge built by Olson Steel to connect the south end of the marina Commodore O’Rourke presented special appreciation awards to Bill and Terry Krivan (above) and Nan Brown (not pictured) who surveyed other PICYA yacht clubs and helped achieve Tom’s goal of getting all TYC business information including by-laws, board minutes, financial documents, and new member applications now on our website for better member communication. docks. We hope to have all the figures in hand in time to address TYCF grants to Tahoe Basin non-profits by October.” Revenues, memberships and “the house” Fred Greifenstein was up next, presenting the short version of his treasurer’s report — “Financially we’re doing fine!” — along with a series of graphs and revenue and expense reports on the big screen which will all be avail- The Awards Staff Commodore Stacy Conner was recipient of the Red Buoy Trophy for all her hours and generosity of time as a volunteer on the Laser race committee and for allowing TYC to use her buoy for the club’s committee boat. From “Head Penguin” Allan Ramsey: “The Penguin of the Year award goes to someone who’s worked with our program for many years and who‘s been with us, driving from his home in Santa Barbara to Mammoth, Sun Valley, wherever we were skiing for all our events: Rufus Jeffris (right). “As you know from the level of the lake, we had no snow but we still had five good ski days thanks to the man-made stuff. To be on the safe side, we’re holding off on the 2015 schedule ‘til closer to the season.” 4 Block & Tackle / october - december 2014 able to members through their secure Member Login at www.tahoeyc.com. The good news: “We closed last year with a $34,000 surplus due to lower than expected staff expenses and good merchandise sales. And through July 31, we’re running $22,000 ahead of budget thanks to the dues from the increased number of new memberships.” Capital expenses this year included the new 80" TV, sound system, the redo of the network software, and on-going replacement of badly-worn chair upholstery. Port Captain Rick Raduziner had more good news, reporting 38 new memberships during the current year and only eight non-renewing members for 2014. Thanks went to the Membership committee for their follow-up work on the 4,000 mailing that went out to Tahoe residents earlier in the year and to the Foundation for the booth at August’s Concours, all of which helped expose TYC to prospective members. The landlord has asked us to close the deck until we can come up with a design, which the board is working on, to keep items safely confined. Inset: Mardy Walker (left) and Fritzi Briner. 6 Block & Tackle / october - december 2014 As port captain, Raduziner returned to the mic to report on several additions to TYC’s floating stock and on the positive feedback from the club’s “Buddy Boat” program, offering three Lasers and three Sunfish to members for use free of charge. He is also expecting a donation of a nearly-new Pico ($4,000 retail), a wonderful learning boat for kids, to add to the Buddy Boat program for the coming year. With thanks to Tahoe Yacht Harbor and Manager Jim Phelan, Rick said the new standup paddleboard (SUP) and kayak program got underway this summer with two SUPS and two single and one double kayak now stored alongside the Marina’s Bldg. 6. All are also available for members use at no charge. Rick noted the 24-ft Bayliner Trophy acquired last year has turned out to be a great Committee Boat but our Whaler is at the end of its life. He is looking for a replacement with more freeboard and an open bow to hold the marks for races. This will also benefit the OTBs as well as shore events and asks membership for any suggestions. Laser, keel boat and junior sailing programs Standing in for Sail Committee Chairman Dan Hauserman, Rick gave a brief overview of the Laser and keelboat programs with thanks to Staff Commodore Stacy Conner who, as a volunteer, starts and finishes an average of 30 boats each Monday night in the 14-week Laser series Thanks also went to Race Officer Greg Barraclough, mark-set Jared Manning, and to TYC skipper Gary Redelberger for organizing the Wednesday night Beer Can series. Since the Beer Cans were shy on boats this summer, Divisions 1 and 2 were combined with Dan Hauserman’s Personal Puff taking first place in both spring and summer series. Stacy, standing in for Staff Commodore Bryce Griffith, could speak from experience as the proud mom of Tahoe Community Sailing program graduate: 17-year-old son Ryan Conner, now a US Sailing certified junior sailing instructor. The Jr. sailing program is alive and well, and going strong with 579 student class sessions this past summer. There were seven Jrs. in TYC’s Radial fleet (boats with a slightly less heavy sail than a Laser) and 11 Jrs. in Picos sailing in our Monday night Laser races. Acknowledging the public/private partnership of the program with TCPUD (which handles all the administrative work), Stacy also thanked the TYC Foundation and individual members for their funding support, and Obexer’s Boat Company for the use of their facilities and generous support. From sail to power Outgoing Director Roger McGee thanked all who participated in this year’s OTBs, singling out Series Co-chairman Mike Simmons for his organization and “Mr. OTB”— Greg Barraclough — for the wonderful job of setting courses, writing instructions and keeping track of all the times. “With the weather holding, we were able to race all five rallys, 15 to 20 boats each week with lots of enthusiasm, and newto-OTB winners,” McGee remarked. Roger also noted an increase in wooden boats for the OTB sponsored by TYC on Sun- day after the Concours. “We’ve had to open the rally to fiberglass and metal the past couple of years to cover costs. But I’m happy to report more woodies this year including the first four winners, all finishing within 30 seconds.” (For OTB full reports and winners, see pages 10 and 15.) …and on the social side In his opening comments, Commodore O’Rourke said “We are a very strong unit because we have a strong volunteer group…” Fred Greifenstein echoed these sentiments, thanking Director Becky Arnold for her extra efforts on this year’s Hospitality committee and Susie Mason, who joined the committee mid-year, for the energy she brought. With Susie taking over the Hospitality chairmanship this coming year, Fred would like to see the committee focus on more affordability of events, starting with September’s Oktoberfest, and announced there will be “no charge” for next year’s end-of-summer party. With a parting gift of the “traditional” framed Block & Tackle magazine cover and thanks to Commodore O’Rourke by Greifenstein and Staff Commodore Hank Upton, the meeting was adjourned at 3:35 p.m. From Port Captain and Board Secretary Keith Mason with Sue Stout At the End-of-Summer Cocktail Party following the Annual Meeting, Saturday, Aug. 30 catered by Melanie Jackson Newly-elected Port Captain Keith Mason with the H.M.S. Old Friends returning July 2014 TYC members from 1993 to 2011 Membership committee report H ello, fellow TYCers. I hope you all had a fabulous summer filled with lots of Lake Tahoe fun. There is still more to come as September and October are typically beautiful months. We have had tremendous success with our 2014 membership drive. I am pleased to announce that, as of this writing, we have attracted 38 new memberships this year. This equates to more than 10 percent growth in one year. There are a lot of new faces out there so please say hello to those that you have yet to meet at the next event that you participate in. Here is the formula that we have been sucFrom cessful with: Rear Commodore 1. Our existing members have been encourRick Raduziner, aging their friends to join whom they feel will Membership enjoy the benefits of our club. 2. We have been inviting our friends to “First Friday” cocktail parties and other TYC events. (The membership and staff make the TYC experience exceptional!) 3. Over 4,000 letters soliciting member prospects to discover the TYC were sent out last May. (TYC is a “great investment in friendships.”) 4. TYC brochures were distributed to marinas on the West and North Shores. 5. We have developed a number of new value-added benefit programs like the stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, and Buddy Boats, all FREE for our members’ use. We have two SUPs and three kayaks waiting for you on the rack located on the west side of Tahoe City Marina’s Bldg.6. This is a great way to enjoy the Lake and get your muscles working. We have a dinghy sailboat fleet of three Lasers and three Sunfish along with a near-new Laser Pico which was recently donated to the club. The Pico is a wonderful boat for novice sailors and for adults to go sailing with their children. 6. Thanks to the Tahoe Yacht Club Foundation giving the Member- ship committee booth space inside the wine tent at August’s Concours d’Elegance, several applications have been received as a direct result of this excellent exposure. 7. Club functions and activities throughout the year create positive social synergy. Thanks to all of you for helping make TYC an incredible club. This was a great year for membership growth, however, we still have a way to go. Membership growth is vital to the future success of our club, both socially and financially. The value of our membership is heightened when we participate in TYC events and bring our friends. I would also like to thank our incredible staff for a job “well done,” Both Mariana Dye and Ryan Hulstyn have been exceptional with their follow-through with our new member applicants. Lastly, I would like to say “thank you” to our Membership Committee — Judd Holiday, and Directors Ray Landgraf and Margaret Holiday — for all of their efforts. It takes a team to be successful. We have a great team! Your name, address, phone numbers, boat names and descriptions…Is it all correct and up-to-date in the 2014 Membership Roster? In the last edition of Block & Tackle, we provided the results for the first two series events. The competition just kept getting tougher, and by the end of Race #4 there were a From few clear winners. Director Ray Landgraf’s Mike Simmons, Formula 280SS, Blue Sky, clearly looked like OTB Co-Chairman a key contender, but Staff Commodore Doug and Nancy Ball’s Cobalt 242, Sweet Pea Again, had a strong chance of success with ‘throw-out’ opportunities to their advantage. Needless to say, Wendy Poore’s crew on the 21-ft. ChrisCraft Scorpion, New Canoe, was eager to accomplish a second straight year of success and looking forward to a plan for future club records of multi-year wins! Races #3 and #4 winners only 1 and 2 seconds off the mark! July 19th’s Race #3 was a beautiful Tahoe morning with a start off the West Shore Café. It may have been rigged but Greg’s dad, Ron Veteran OTB official Greg Barraclough’s courses just kept getting “more interesting” all the way through the season. Barraclough in XK, a 1970 19-ft. Chris-Craft, not only finished first but was just one second off the mark. He was followed closely by Blue Sky (4 seconds off), and Sweet Pea Again (12 seconds off). Race #4 on August 2 was even more competitive with the top three winners all finishing within five seconds off the mark. It may have been the rush to get to Moe’s, the new BBQ in Tahoe City, for lunch but over half the fleet finished within one minute. And only one boat, Jim and Lynn Mullen’s Irish Wake a 19-ft. Ski Nautique, was aggressively working toward their own season record of highest times! Poore and crew on New Canoe were just two seconds off the mark. Junior Wilson and Katja Dahl on Nancy, a Formula 330, were four seconds off, followed closely in third place by Terry Clapham in Leading Lady, the classic 1940 Gar Wood, just five seconds off the mark! Race #5 winner right on the mark! Race #5, the final and deciding race of the series, was by far one of the most interesting courses of the season. Many racers were not sure if they performed well until the scores were posted. All agreed that it was a wonderful event, especially during Wendy Poore and crews’ fantastic Over-the-Baja lunch back at the clubhouse. Once again, Race #5 was extremely close with over half of the 20-boat fleet finishing less than one minute off the mark. Ross and Jamie Arno came in first (right on the mark) in their 23-ft. Cobalt, Olympic Lady. In second place was Director Bill Mann in his 22-ft. Chris-Craft, Sweet & Sour (10 seconds off), followed closely by Staff Commodore Andy Wagner and Suzanne Boucher in Ruby Red, a 19-ft. Century, at 14 seconds off. Series winner a close call Race #3 winner Ron Barraclough and crew — son Jeff and grandkids, Brady and Allie — won race #3 coming in at just ONE SECOND OFF THE MARK! It was RIGHT ON THE MARK for race #5 first place winners, Jamie and Ross Arno. 10 Block & Tackle /october - december 2014 Now, the series winner was a close call. Both Ray Landgraf’s crew in Blue Sky and the Ball’s Sweet Pea Again were neck and neck. But Blue Sky’s very steady performance of only 33 seconds total time off the mark time for their three best OTB events led to their series First Place with Sweet Pea Again highly honored in Second Place and Junior and Katja’s Nancy taking Third Place. OTB co-chair Roger McGee adds “The Landgrafs are to be complimented for such a fine performance in only their second year of participation. Newcomers make note, as you may also be successful in a short time.” A total of 17 boats qualified for the series. In addition to the winners were (in order of results): New Canoe, Ruby Red, Gerparty, Bernardini, Bear Down/XK, Above Water, Where’s Harvey II, In the Mood, Color of Money, Beauty & the Beach, Summer Daze, Samantha, Leading Lady and Irish Wake. Block & Tackle / october - december 2014 11 42nd annual TAHOE YACHT CLUB FOUNDATION What a Great Concours…however, it wasn’t long ago, back in February when we were involved in changing the location for our 2014 show, that putting on a 42nd annual Concours d’Elegance seemed almost impossible, a real challenge! Now that we have completed our first year at Obexer’s Boat Company and Marina, we can feel very good about how well the event and the change to the West Shore took place. Thanks go to many — our Concours committee and Obexer’s management and staff, the many volunteers, our exhibitors and judges, our Liquid Blue event planners, Tahoe Yacht Club, and the Homewood community — for all pulling together and making this year's event one of the best. With the terrific planning we were able to fit in more boats than thought possible, including a Marque class of 24! According to ChrisCraft Antique Boat Club President Don Ayers, this was the largest gathering of Barrelbacks since they were churned out on the original production line back in the late ’30s to early ’40s. The overall layout and the improvements to Obexer’s facilities all came together to create an incredible environment, promoting a fun festival-like atmosphere. We really appreciated the efforts and the way TYC and the Membership committee participated with the Wine Village and look forward to next year in even improving this show feature. on the cover: With their 2014 Peoples’ Choice award in hand, BIG SKY owners Paula and Bob Boldt make their way under Obexer’s Concours bridge in the “Roar-Off,” bringing the 42nd annual Concours d’Elegance to a close. photo: dick morton 12 Block & Tackle / october - december 2014 MARQUE CLASS BARRELBACKS OBEXER’S BOAT COMPANY, HOMEWOOD, CALIFORNIA AUGUST 8-9, 2014 Now that it is all over for 2014, we are able to look at our costs to budget, and feel very good in reference to the fact that our number of attendees were slightly ahead of our goal while personal sponsors participating were down slightly. Led by Tahoe Luxury Properties and Niello Porsche, watchmakers Frederique Constant, and GoldKey Storage & Marine Center, our corporate sponsorships were above our goal, while several areas of expenses were slightly over budget, yet not bad for our first effort at a new location. Competition was tough with five boats finishing in less than 33 seconds off the mark time—the first three boats less than 12 seconds apart! And wooden boats taking the top four places. John and Connie Linneman of Lafayette, Calif., in Clementine, a 1949 20-ft Chris-Craft Custom Runabout, were first at five seconds off the mark. The “dress” theme for this year was “Prohibition – The End of an Era,” and several crews were decked out in style with first-year TYC members Tania Modic and Bruce Gray in Black Swan winning the award for the best costumes. Ladies’ Luncheon hosts Diane and David Paul and their Tiger crew, along with Nancy Bartolomei and Rich Fisher were also in contention for the theme prize. O nce again we had a fun group of men and women sign up for the club’s annual Tennis Social on Saturday, July 19. This year, TYC joined with three local developments—St. Francis Lakeside Condominiums, Dollar Point Homeowners and The Northshore Townhomes—to make the event, a summer tradition since 1990, happen. After a beautiful morning of round robin tennis matches at the courts of those associations (with thunderstorms threatening for later in the afternoon), we had a delicious lunch back at the club catered by Melanie Jackson. Our tennis winners were Gay Bentley in first place, with a tie for second between Vu Nguyen and Gary Kaufman. Cynthia Wichelman, Rick Lamb and Carmen Dressler were honorable mentions. Many thanks to TYC General Manager Mariana and Assistant Manager Ryan whose help with planning and on the event day allowed all to run so smoothly.
