POST-FESTIVAL REPORT ANTARAGNI'10 in association with Uttar Pradesh State Aids Control Society (UPSACS) ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Antaragni is indebted to the Uttar Pradesh State Aids Control Society (UPSACS) for giving us an opportunity to carry out activities for such a noble cause. These activities has made our youth more aware about AIDS and the activities of UPSACS. Also Antaragni joins hand in hands to fight off Stigma Discrimination in our society by educating our youth on such a critical issue. In addition to the moral values, the team of Antaragni'10 would like to thank the Uttar Pradesh State Aids Control Society for their invaluable support before and after the festival. It sincerely expresses its gratitude and hopes to stand up to its expectations for many more years to come. Team, Antaragni'10 IIT Kanpur Antaragni,Annual Cultural Festival of IIT Kanpur In the Golden Jubilee Year of IIT Kanpur, ANTARAGNI, its Annual Cultural Festival reached hitherto unprecedented heights. Antaragni has now evolved into the biggest cultural extravaganza of Northern India. Being the most eagerly awaited event of the year, it bears witness to an eruption of the cultural flair and creative exuberance which is the hallmark of our institute. Antaragni ’10 was organized from October 21-24, 2010. Antaragni ’10 witnessed over 20,000 footfalls and saw participation from over 150 top colleges from all corners of the country.. Along with mind blowing professional shows and glamorous lifestyle events, socially relevant burning issues of the day found a strong voice in the discussions and panel talks which formed an integral part of the fest. In the past, exponents like Pt. Ravi Shankar, Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Astad Debu, singers like Atif Aslam, Jagjit Singh, KK, Remo Fernandes, Raageshwari and bands like Poets of the Fall (the MTV Europe Music Award winning rock band from Finland), Glyder (from Ireland), Parikrama, Euphoria, Aryans, Indian Ocean, Prestorika, Mother Jane, Them Clones have enthralled and mesmerized massive audiences at Antaragni. Antaragni ’08 saw the exclusive Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Farhan Akhtar's Rock On! special performance to tumultuous applause. Antaragni ’09 witnessed the likes of K.K. and Jaded Sun. Antaragni today has firmly established itself as a brand and in the 50th anniversary of our august institution, its visibility went bigger and better than ever. COMPETITIONS With over 150 colleges participating in Antaragni'10, this year the competition level reached a new height and unparalleled enthusiasm. With 49 competitions falling into 8 broad categories, these competitions witnessed hard fought battles and a huge crowd support to cheer their teams to glory. The winners were awarded with cash prizes, certificates and mementos on a great scale. Attracting high quality participation from the major design institutes of the country such as NIFTs and INIFDs, the event was a visual treat for the 10000 strong audience as they were lost in the magic and glamour created by the designers and the models. The event was judged by established professionals such as the photographer Rohit Dhingra. Mridaksh One of the most popular events in the festival, Mridaksh is a stage for the participants to show their personality and skills as they fight it out to be crowned Mr and Ms Antaragni. Fun Questionnaires were distributed among the people, and finally there were the finals to a packed auditorium, with entertaining rounds like talent round, duet etc, all accompanied by witty and irreverent compering. The Mall The Mall is the backbone of the festival, as a constant stream of fun and on-the-spot activities keeps the crowd interested and coming back. The wacky and creative events demanded spontaneous participation and offered loads of entertainment for the participants and the crowd alike. Calypso - The Discotheque As the evening wore down the participants lets their hair down at the discotheque. All the worries of the day sailed away as the pulsing rhythms got the feet tapping and the body moving. Organized every evening of the festival with a spacious floor and classy DJs, this one was a prime crowd attraction. Model UN Model United Nations or MUN is an academic simulation of the UN that aims to educate participants about environment, civics, current events, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. Topic in Antaragni’10- The committee being simulated in IITK MUN 2010 is: UN Framework Convention on climate change (also called COP 16) Implementation- In standard Model UN, students take on roles as diplomats and participate in a simulated session of an international organization under the UN. Participants research a country, take on roles as diplomats, investigate international issues, debate, deliberate, consult, and then develop solutions to world problems. Over a series of committee sessions, delegates work together to introduce working papers and draft resolutions. The session ends when the committee votes on the (till then generated) draft, generally choosing to adopt a single document that addresses the issue. Delegates- Experienced professionals from companies like HMEL, McKinsey, ITC, HUL, etc. PROFESSIONAL SHOWS Prima Nocte This is where it all starts, the fun and the excitement. This year the high profile inauguration event witnessed India's longest running english play “Love Letters” performed by artists Mr. Rajit Kapoor and Mrs. Shernaz Patel . In the past, top-rung performers like Pt. Ravi Shankar and Jagjit Singh have mesmerized the crowds through their performances in this opening night. Blitzkrieg This is the high point of the festival, as bollywood stars like Atif Aslam, K.K., Shankar Ehsaan and Loy drive the 10,000 crowd crazy. This year we had bollywood singer Shafqat Amanat Ali and fusion band Sitar Funk entertaining the crowds with their music . Synchronocity Synchronicity- the rock juggernaut of Antaragni. The best young bands from all over India unleash their musical fury to be crowned the new messiahs of rock. This year bands like Nigambodh and Weapon Shop shot the adrenaline of the youngsters to the highest. The top three bands open for top tier headlining acts like Poets of the Fall, Glyder and Jaded Sun. Highlights of UPSACS activities for reducing HIV AIDS and Stigma Discrimination Movies @ Open Air Theatre During the first 3 nights of Antaragni'10, short movies on AIDS Awareness were put on the open air theatre. These movies witnessed a crowd of nearly 400 students each night. The movies showcased were : Day 1 : “Positive” directed by Farhan Akhtar. Day 2 : “Blood Brothers” directed by Vishal Bharadwaj. Day 3 : “Migration” directed by Meera Nair. HIV SENSITIZATION There are more than 5000 students studying in the campus. From the four undergraduate batches, we assigned 10 volunteers each to make a group of 40 students who were called “Peer Educators”. These students were given a lecture by a mentor of UPSACS (Mr. Menon) regarding stigma discrimination and services provided by UPSACS. These peer educators have ever since played the role of disseminating this information to their batch-mates. Poster Making Competition A Poster Making Competition was organized during the last eve of the festival. The Topic of the competition was “Youth and HIV Awareness”. The Competition received 23 individual entries and best 5 entries were awarded with prizes worth Rs 1000 each. Slogan Writing Competition This competition was organized in two phases. The first part saw active participation from a crowd of over 100 students and the best 3 entries were rewarded with prizes worth Rs 1000 each. Also 2 consolation prizes were declared among the participants and prizes worth Rs 500 each were given. The second part of slogan writing saw over 350 entries and was in an entry form for a competition called “Blind Date” where participants in order to get entry into the PreFinal round had to fill up a form. The form had a section in which the participants had to write a slogan on AIDS Awareness. Best 7 entries were awarded with prizes worth Rs 1000 each and 3 consolation prizes worth Rs 500 were also given. Stall of UPSACS @ Antaragni'10 During the 4 days of the festival, a stall was set up in the Students' Activity Center of IIT Kanpur for promotion of the activities of UPSACS and free HIV testing. As many as 110 students turned up to have an HIV test done. Also incentives were given in the form of 40 lucky draw prizes worth Rs 1000 each to the students who opt for HIV Testing. Red Ribbons (Symbol of AIDS Awareness) Every outside participant coming to Antaragni gets a handbook which acts as a guide to them. This year red ribbons were put on each handbook distributed to the outside participants which was greater than 2000 in number hence reminding about the cause of UPSACS to the entire public of the festival. Doubt Box There were five doubt boxes called HIV (Help-in-view) boxes to be setup at strategic locations ,where people can drop in their queries while maintaining absolute anonymity. The queries were then answered on the Mall Stage in the Students' Activity Center on the 3rd and 4th Night of the festival. These Doubt Boxes received 19 entries this year. Branding of UPSACS in Antaragni'10 Backdrop of Synchronicity UPSACS along with its logo and message was put up on the main backdrop of Synchronicity. The pre-finals and the finals both had a tremendous crowd presence of above 5000. OFFICIAL PASSES UPSACS alongside with the symbol of AIDS Awareness and a message of “TALK AIDS STOP AIDS” was printed on all the official passes of Antaragni'10. These passes were distributed to over 2000 people including staff persons in IIT Kanpur, Faculty and Sponsors. Official Newsletter The name of UPSACS alongside a message and a logo of AIDS Awareness appeared in the official newsletter of Antaragni'10. Website of Antaragni'10 This year Antaragni'10 saw more than a million hits on its website. The name and message by UPSACS was put up on the website which directed to the original website of UPSACS upon clicking. INVITATION LETTER The name of UPSACS alongside a message and a logo of AIDS Awareness appeared on the official invitation letter of Antaragni'10. Branding Through Print Media An advertisement in the national newspaper “ Dainik Jagran” was published highlighting about the festival. The association of UPSACS with IIT Kanpur was also mentioned in the advertisement. Mention In Press Conference In the official press conference of Antaragni'10, association of UPSACS with Antaragni'10 and its activities were highlighted. Articles praising about the efforts of UPSACS and Antaragni'10 came out in national newspapers like Times of India and Dainik Jagran. Publicity Banners 20 Standard Sized banners of UPSACS were placed at strategic locations inside the campus during all 4 days of the festival. Publicity Hoardings 5 Publicity Hoardings of Antaragni’10 were put up at prominent locations in Kanpur. These hoardings carried the name and message by UPSACS highlighting its association with Antaragni’10 and IIT Kanpur. Publicity In Kanpur City Publicity banners/cut-outs/flyers of Antaragni’10 were placed in various malls and cinema halls in Kanpur a month before the festival. The name and logo of UPSACS along with a message was an integral part of the publicity in these places. Handbooks In addition to the red ribbons put on every handbook printed, each handbook highlighted the association of UPSACS with Antaragni'10 and IIT Kanpur. Mega Banners 2 Mega banners were put inside the Students Activity Center during the 4 days of the festival which highlighted the association of UPSACS and Antaragni'10.
