Emerald Ash Borer 2006 Survey Report
Emerald ash borer (Agrilus planipennis), first discovered in Michigan in 2002, poses a
significant threat to ash species in North America. Since early detection of infestations is
vital to eradication and management efforts, the USDA Forest Service Forest Health
Protection (FHP) unit, along with state and university cooperators, conducted visual and
trap tree detection surveys in seven upper Midwest states for the exotic pest. Forest
Service cost-share funding was used by cooperators in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan,
Minnesota, and Wisconsin to conduct surveys on federal, state, county and private
properties. FHP staff conducted surveys on federal properties in Iowa, Minnesota,
Missouri, and Wisconsin.
The following report summarizes 2006 Forest Service-sponsored visual and trap tree
surveys. For each state, results of trap trees peeled in 2006 by FHP and state and
university cooperators are provided. Participating states also conducted or are currently
conducting additional EAB surveys financed by state or USDA-APHIS funds. Results
from additional surveys have been made available for this report from Indiana,
Minnesota, Missouri, and Wisconsin, and are included. However, significant efforts, such
as the extensive USDA-APHIS funded surveys in Michigan, northeast Illinois, and
southeast Wisconsin are not included in this report. For more information regarding
further EAB surveys, appropriate state contact information is provided.

Emerald Ash Borer 2006 Survey Report
________________________________________________________________________
In 2006, The Morton Arboretum and the University of Illinois/Illinois Natural History
Survey conducted trap tree surveys on sites in northern and southern Illinois,
respectively, with the assistance of Forest Service cost-share funding. A total of 319 EAB
trap trees were set up, with the focus on recreation areas on federal, state, county, and
private lands across the state. In addition to trap tree surveys, the University of Illinois
also conducted visual surveys at nine sites. Emerald ash borer was detected in three trap
trees in Kane County in the northeast portion of the state. The first detection of EAB in
Illinois was discovered in Kane County in mid-summer by USDA-APHIS. Not included
in this report is an extensive trap tree survey conducted in northeast Illinois by USDAAHPIS.

Emerald Ash Borer 2006 Survey Report
________________________________________________________________________
Forest Service funding provided to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources was
used to conduct trap tree surveys focusing on the northeast corner of the state. In
conjunction with an additional trap tree survey program funded by USDA-APHIS, IDNR
peeled approximately 2,143 trees statewide in 2006. Emerald ash borer was detected on
four peeled trap trees. Two of these trees were located in counties where EAB had not
previously been detected, DeKalb County and Porter County. The other two positive trees
were located in counties with known infestations, Steuben County and White County.

Emerald Ash Borer 2006 Survey Report
________________________________________________________________________
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, in partnership with Iowa State University,
used Forest Service funding to conduct visual and trap tree surveys. IDNR and ISU trap
tree surveys focused on high risk federal, state, and county campgrounds, while visual
surveys focused on state and county campgrounds. FHP surveyors focused visual surveys
on federal sites throughout the state. In 2006, a total 102 sites were visually surveyed and
58 trap trees were established in 18 sites. Emerald ash borer was not detected in Iowa.

Emerald Ash Borer 2006 Survey Report
________________________________________________________________________
Forest Service funding provided to Michigan Tech University was used in conducting
trap tree surveys throughout Upper and Lower Michigan. Survey sites focused on high
risk recreation areas where firewood introduction is likely. These sites were largely on
federal properties, National Forests and National Parks, and state properties, State Parks
and State Forests. In 2006, a total of 263 trap trees were cut and peeled and 511
established trap trees were left standing for an additional season. Emerald ash borer
presence was detected on five of the peeled trees in counties with known EAB
infestations. Not included in this report is an extensive trap tree survey conducted in
Upper and Lower Michigan by USDA-APHIS and the Michigan Department of
Agriculture.

Emerald Ash Borer 2006 Survey Report
________________________________________________________________________
Forest Service funding provided to the Minnesota Department of Agriculture was used in
conducting surveys of 48 trap trees in and around the Minneapolis-Saint Paul and
Rochester metropolitan areas. FHP personnel also established trap trees on three sites on
the Chippewa and Superior National Forests; these trees remain standing for the 2007
season. FHP personnel also conducted visual surveys on 23 federal sites throughout the
state. An additional 44 trap trees were surveyed using state funds by the Minnesota
Department of Natural Resources. In 2006, emerald ash borer was not detected in
Minnesota.

Forest Service funding provided to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources was
used to conduct visual surveys on state, county, and private properties throughout the
state. Along with visual surveys conducted by FHP personnel on federal properties, a
total of 241 sites were visually surveyed in Wisconsin. FS funding provided to Michigan
Tech University was used to conduct trap tree surveys in sites on the ChequamegonNicolet National Forest in northern Wisconsin. In addition, state funding provided to
Michigan Tech University was used to conduct trap tree surveys on high risk state park
and state forest campgrounds. Not included in this report is an extensive trap tree and
destructive sampling survey conducted in southeast Wisconsin by USDA-APHIS and the
Wisconsin Department of Agriculture in late 2006. Emerald ash borer was not detected in
Wisconsin.
