A look back in time
Amid Selfridge’s runways, hangars and barracks, the baseball diamond and tennis courts are visible on August 4,

Laws
* Law of Mechanical Repair: After your hands become coated with grease, your nose will begin to itch and you'll have to pee.
* Law of Gravity: Any tool, when dropped, will roll to the least accessible corner.
* Law of Probability: The probability of being watched is directly proportional to the stupidity of your act.
* Law of Random Numbers: If you dial a wrong number, you never get a busy signal and someone always answers.
* Law of the Alibi: If you tell the boss you were late for work because you had a flat tire, the very next morning you will have a
flat tire.
* Variation Law: If you change lines (or traffic lanes), the one you were in will always move faster than the one you are in now
(works every time).
* Law of the Bath: When the body is fully immersed in water, the telephone rings.
* Law of Close Encounters: The probability of meeting some one you know increases dramatically when you are with someone
you don't want to be seen with.
* Law of the Result: When you try to prove to someone that a machine won't work, it will.
* Law of Biomechanics: The severity of the itch is inversely proportional to the reach.
* Law of the Theater: At any event, the people whose seats are furthest from the aisle arrive last.
* The Starbucks Law: As soon as you sit down to a cup of hot coffee, your boss will ask you to do something which will last until
the coffee is cold.
* Murphy's Law of Lockers: If there are only two people in a locker room, they will have adjacent lockers.
* Law of Physical Surfaces: The chances of an open-faced jelly sandwich landing face down on a floor covering are directly
correlated to the newness and cost of the carpet/rug.
* Law of Logical Argument: Anything is possible if you don't know what you are talking about.
* Brown's Law of Physical Appearance: If the shoe fits, it's ugly.
* Oliver's Law of Public Speaking: A closed mouth gathers no feet.
* Wilson's Law of Commercial Marketing Strategy: As soon as you find a product that you really like, they will stop making it.
* Doctor' Law: If you don't feel well, make an appointment to go to the doctor, by the time you get there you'll feel better. Don't
make an appointment and you'll stay sick.

Selfridge’s 171st Air Refueling Squadron Shares WWII Heritage
by TSgt. Dan Heaton
127th Wing Public Affairs
4/22/2014 - SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mich. -- One of the two Air Force flight squadrons
at Selfridge Air National Guard Base shares a history with a Michigan World War II veteran who has been
awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross after an official military review of his service in that war.
Alfred P. Murphy, a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, was recently presented with the
DFC during a ceremony presided over by Col. Philip R. Sheridan, 127th Wing commander at Selfridge.
During the war, Murphy was a crewmember on a B-17 Flying Fortress, assigned to the 322nd Bomb
Squadron, 91st Bomb Group (H), 8th Air Force.
At the same time, the 374th Fighter Squadron, flying P-47 Thunderbolt fighter aircraft, was also assigned to
the 8th Air Force, tasked with providing fighter escort to the bomber aircraft of the 8th. The legacy of the
374th lives on today, in one of the Michigan Air National Guard's flying squadrons.
While Murphy was flying with the 322nd, the 8th Air Force's bomber and fighter squadrons were operating
from air fields in England. The various U.S. and allied squadrons would join up in the air, with the fighters
working to protect the bombers from enemy aircraft during missions over the European mainland. The heroic
adventures of the 8th Air Force and its Airmen in World War II have been the subject of numerous books,
movies and other recollections.
Following World War II, the 374th was briefly inactivated. Several months later, the unit was re-activated and
re-designated as the 171st Fighter Squadron and assigned to the Michigan Air National Guard. After a
number of mission and aircraft assignment changes over the years, the 171st was re-designated as the
171st Air Refueling Squadron in 2008 and assigned KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft. The 171st ARS is now a
component of the 127th Wing at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.
Today, in addition to other assignments, the 171st ARS has participated in a series of "rolling mobilizations"
in southwest Asia. Since the rolling mobilizations began in 2011, at least one air crew and ground support
personnel and one of the unit's aircraft have been almost continuously forward deployed. The squadron has
also deployed to Europe and to the Pacific Command several times in recent years.

MUSEUM HAPPENINGS
COMING SOON: Museum volunteers are in the final stages of restoring a T-6 “Texan” flown by all
three flying squadrons of the Michigan ANG from 1946 to 1955.
To be historically accurate, this aircraft started its life as a Marine Corps SNJ-4, BuNo 27842, It’s
last assignment was at MCAS Cherry Point NC and in the late 1950s it was sold out of NAS
Litchfield Park AZ (where most Navy/Marine Corps where stored at the time) as surplus to a
civilian buyer, In 1970 it went to Newark OH, to Niagara Falls NY in 2011, to Broken Arrow OK
and Los Angeles CA in 2012, and to the Selfridge Military Air Museum in 2013.
The aircraft is being restored as a T-6, Serial #28-227, flown by the 171 FBS. This serial number
was involved in an accident near Union City MI on 10 June 1954 with Col Lester A. Erikson
(deceased) as its pilot.
Museum volunteers anticipate it being displayed in our Air Park in 2014 and hopefully at the 6/7
September 2014 Open House.

Driving in Michigan
From Jesse Archibald
Just in case your driver's license is coming up for renewal and you need to
take the written test. . . . . . . . . . .
BASIC RULES FOR DRIVING IN MICHIGAN
1. Speed limits are arbitrary figures, given only as suggestions and are
apparently not enforceable in the metro Detroit area during rush hour.
2. In Michigan 55 is the speed at which you leave the driveway.
3. A right lane construction closure is just a game to see how many people can
cut in line passing you on the right as you sit in the left lane waiting for
the same jerks to squeeze their way in before the orange construction barrels.
4. Turn signals will give away your next move.
uses them.
A real Michigan driver never
5. Under no circumstances should you leave a safe distance between you and the
car in front of you, or the space will be filled in by somebody else putting
you in an even more dangerous situation.
6. Crossing two or more lanes in a single lane-change is considered going with
the flow.
7. Never get in the way of an older car that needs extensive bodywork.
8. Michigan is a no-fault insurance state and the other guy doesn't have
anything to lose.
9. Just because you're in the left lane and have no room to speed up or move
over doesn't mean that a Michigan driver flashing his high beams behind you
doesn't think he can go faster in your spot.
10. Learn to swerve abruptly as Michigan is the home of high-speed slalom
driving thanks to MDOT, which put potholes in key locations to test driver's
reflexes and keep them on their toes.
11. It is traditional in Michigan to honk your horn at cars that don't move the
instant the light changes.
12. Seeking eye contact with another driver revokes your right of way.
13. Real Michigan women drivers can put on pantyhose and apply eye makeup at
seventy-five miles per hour in bumper-to-bumper traffic.
14. Real Michigan male drivers can shave, drink coffee, read the newspaper, and
talk on the cell phone at 80 miles per hour in bumper-to-bumper rush hour
traffic.

Retiree ID cards now have expiration dates
by Debbie Gildea, Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs
2/1/2013 - JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas (AFRNS)
Blue retiree identification cards issued before December 2012 had the word "indef" instead of an expiration date.
Since December, retiree cards issued have an expiration date effective the day before the retiree’s 65th birthday.
Although benefits will not automatically expire, some changes will take effect based on Medicare eligibility, Air
Force Personnel Center officials said.
Retirees and their eligible spouses will still have access to benefits and they'll still be enrolled in the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System, but the expiration date - which is one day before their 65th birthday - is a reminder to retirees that they must enroll in Medicare Part A and B to retain their TRICARE for Life eligibility," said
Ed Yoder, Air Force DEERS project office.
Airmen who retired before the December card change took effect do not need to get a new ID card just because of
the expiration date change, Yoder said.
"If your ID card is worn out, unserviceable or your appearance has changed significantly enough that the picture is
no longer a good likeness, you should get your card replaced. But there is no mandate to replace your card with the
new expiration date card."
Retirees who have the new card showing the expiration date will get a replacement card showing the indefinite status once they turn 65, and spouses' cards will read "indef" once they turn 75, Yoder said.
Airmen who need or want to renew their retiree ID card can go to the nearest Real-time Automated Personnel Identification System office (military personnel section), or call their nearest RAPIDS facility for assistance and guidance. To find the nearest ID card issuing facility, visit http://www.dmdc.osd.mil
For information the new expiration date retiree card, DEERS eligibility programs and other personnel issues, visit
the myPers website at https://mypers.af.mil.

MEMORIAL WALL
SELFRIDGE MILITARY AIR MUSEUM
The Michigan Air Guard Historical Association (MAGHA) has completed construction of a Memorial Area in the center of the Air Park at
the Selfridge Military Air Museum. The memorial is a place to honor all members of the military who gave their lives in the line of
duty and in the service of this great nation, to recognize all those who have in the past or who are currently serving their
country, and to acknowledge the contributions made by families and companies to the preservation of freedom. Pictures of the
Memorial Area and the Memorial Wall are above. The centerpiece is an elevated F-86 Sabre aircraft, an aircraft flown, maintained, and
supported by three Michigan Air Guard units in the mid-1950s. Flanking the F-86 is the Memorial Wall topped by engraved Memorial
Bricks such as those shown below.
We invite you to become part of this memorial and to recognize a unit, an individual, or a family by purchasing an engraved b rick that
will become a permanent part of the Memorial Wall. Cash donations for the Memorial project are also welcome. All memorial brick
purchases and donations for this effort are tax-deductible per Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Service Code. Engraved memorial
bricks cost $100.00 per brick for non-members (cost includes a one-year membership in MAGHA), $75.00 per brick for
members, and $50.00 per brick when multiple brick orders are made. For example, a one-brick order from a MAGHA member
would cost $75.00, a two-brick order would cost $125.00, and a three-brick order $175.00. Information about MAGHA can be
obtained by calling 586-239-6768, by visiting our web site at www.selfridgeairmuseum.org, or by writing to us at the address below.

Church Bulletins!
These sentences (with all the BLOOPERS) actually appeared in church bulletins
or were announced in church services:
1. The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals.
2. The sermon this morning: 'Jesus Walks on the Water.' The sermon tonight: 'Searching for Jesus.'
3. Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around
the house. Bring your husbands.
4. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community. Smile at someone who is hard to love.
Say 'Hell' to someone who doesn't care much about you.
5. Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help.
6. Miss Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again,' giving obvious pleasure to the congregation.
7. Next Thursday there will be tryouts for the choir. They need all the help they can get.
8. Irving Benson and Jessie Carter were married on October 24 in the church. So ends a friendship that
began in their school days.
9. A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.
10. At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What Is Hell?' Come early and listen to our
choir practice.
11. Eight new choir robes are currently needed due to the addition of several new members and to the
deterioration of some older ones.
12. Scouts are saving aluminum cans, bottles and other items to be recycled. Proceeds will be used to
cripple children.
13. Please place your donation in the envelope along with the deceased person you want remembered.
14. Potluck supper Sunday at 5:00 PM - prayer and medication to follow.
15. The ladies of the Church have cast off clothing of every kind. They may be seen in the basement on
Friday afternoon.
