Planes of Fame Looks at Eyes in the Sky A erial Observation and Forward Air Control Missions will be the subject of the Living History Flying Event hosted by Planes of Fame Air Museum at the Chino Airport on Saturday, Nov. 5. The event will begin at 10am with a seminar describing the very first military mission of manned aircraft and conclude with a flight demonstration by a Planes of Fame Air Museum warbird. Decades before the Wright Brothers made the first manned, powered flight, aerial observation was a primary mission of aircraft in the form of manned balloons. As far back as the 18th Century, and during the 19th Century as well, especially in the American Civil War, observation balloons were used to effectively track the movements of enemy forces and direct artillery fire. That mission was subsequently passed on to manned aircraft during World War I. At each monthly Living History Flying Event, members in attendance can have their names entered into a drawing for a free membersupported warbird orientation flight. Open to the public from 10am until 5pm Sunday through Friday, and from 9am until 5pm on Saturday, Planes of Fame Air Museum is only closed on Christmas and Thanksgiving. General admission is $11, youngsters 5-11 are admitted for $4, and admission is free for accompanied children under five. With the change of seasons comes the annual opening of the Big Horse Corn Maze, Pumpkin Patch, and Harvest Festival at the Big Horse Feed & Mercantile in southern Temecula. Big Horse features 12 acres of corn maze in the design of “California Farmers Feeding the World.” This, the 11th authentic corn maze on the property, is traditionally focused on either patriotic or agricultural themes as many mazes are through the county. As the largest one in Southern California, visitors are drawn from as far away as Santa Barbara, Victorville and the Desert communities to pay for the chance to get lost for an hour or two in 6-8’ corn stalks. Pumpkin bowling, corn cannon, pig races, and ducky races round out the entrainment that can take an afternoon to get through. One aspect of the recent harvest festivals that is unique to Big Horse is the planning and grooming of a full-sized baseball diamond in the corn field, ala the movie by Kevin Costner in 1989, Field of Dreams. A good swat of the bat can drive a baseball into the corn stalks just as Joe Johnson and Ty Cobb portrayed in the movie. Special to this year is the addition of unique craft exhibitions on the weekends of rare talents such as gold panning, sheep shearing, blacksmithing, and even an old-fashioned pie eating contest. The Big Horse Corn Maze is open Oct. 8 Get lost in 8’ stalks of through Halloween the corn at the Big Horse 31st. Hours are Sat/Sun: Corn Maze. 10am – 4pm, and Weekdays 1pm – 5pm. The show plays a total of 11 performances with 7:30pm evening shows on Nov. 18, 19, 22, 25, 26, 30, Dec. 2 and 3 and 1:30pm matinees on Nov. 20, 27, and Dec. 4. Tickets are now on sale through the CATS website at www.bigbeartheater.org and at the PAC Box office at (909) 866-4970. This new version of the Charles Dickens classic was specially adapted for CATS by its director KarenSargent Rachels and was originally presented in 2009. Rachels was inspired by a chance remark from an San Bernardino Musical Home Tour T Antiques Roadshow appraiser of a letter written by Charles Dickens, telling a member of Royalty that he, himself, was unable to procure tickets to one of his sold-out concert readings for her. The appraiser mentioned that getting tickets to a Dickens reading was like trying to get tickets to a Bruce Springsteen concert. Further research indicated that Dickens made two trips to America, also doing a series of concert readings of this works. From this premise, this CATS adaptation of A Christmas Carol, featuring the character of Charles Dickens, was born. Much of Dickens original narrative is retained in this version, and is brought to life on stage by a cast of over 60 actors of all ages. Another CATS innovation for this stage production is the involvement of the Clock Sprites, a group of mischievous sprites who live in The Clock and help the spirits redeem Mr. Scrooge. October, 2011 Inland Entertainment Review 23 Theater & Arts Sinfonia Mexicana presents ‘Dia de Los Muertos – Gala Celebration’ S infonia Mexicana’s Día de Muertos Gala Concert celebrates Mexico’s most colorful and magical holiday by honoring the legacies of Mexico’s most beloved artists—the singers and composers who forged the modern mariachi tradition—and celebrating the lives of our loved ones who are no longer with us. This is a family celebration, with gleeful, dancing skeletons and spooky songs for the kids, but also world-class performance by a mariachi like no other with 23 musicians, and featuring the best and most versatile singers in the world. Hear the music of Javier Solis, Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Lola Beltran, Lucha Reyes, Agustín Lara, María Grever, Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, and others. El día de los muertos is one of the biggest holidays in Mexico and celebrations are becoming more common in areas of the United States, with a large Hispanic population. Its origins are distinctly Mexican. During the time of the Aztecs, a month long summer celebration was overseen by the goddess Mictecacihuatl, the Lady of the Dead. After the Aztecs were conquered by Spain and Catholicism became the dominant religion, the customs became intertwined with the Christian commemoration of All Saints’ Day on November 1. Specifics of the celebration vary with region, but one of the most common customs is the making of elaborate altars to welcome departed spirits home. Vigils are held and families often go to cemeteries to fix up the graves of their departed relatives. Festivities frequently include traditional foods such as pan de muerto (bread of the dead), which can A Non-Profit 501-c3 Corporation www.bigbeartheater.org CALLING ALL DICKENS FANS! Plans for the day are made throughout the year, including gathering the goods to be offered to the dead. During the two-day period, families usually clean and decorate graves. Most visit the cemeteries where their loved ones are buried and decorate their graves with ofrendas (offerings), which often include orange marigolds called “cempasúchitl.” In modern Mexico, this name is sometimes replaced with the term “Flor de Muerto” (“Flower of the Dead”). These flowers are thought to attract souls of the dead to the offerings. Toys are brought for dead children (los angelitos, or “the little angels”), and bottles of tequila, mezcal or pulque or jars of atole for adults. Families will also offer trinkets or the deceased’s favorite candies on the grave. Ofrendas are also put in homes, usually with foods, sugar skulls and beverages such as atole. The ofrendas are left out in the homes as a welcoming gesture for the deceased. Some people believe the spirits of the dead eat the “spiritual essence” of the ofrendas food, so even though the celebrators eat the food after the festivities, they believe it lacks nutritional value. Pillows and blankets are left out so that the deceased can rest after their long journey. In some parts of Mexico, such as the towns of Mixquic, Pátzcuaro and Janitzio, people spend all night beside the graves of their relatives. Some families build altars or small shrines in their homes, these usually have the Christian cross, statues or pictures of the Blessed Virgin Mary, pictures of deceased relatives and other persons, scores of candles and an ofrenda. Traditionally, families spend some time around the altar, praying and telling anecdotes about the deceased. In some locations, celebrants wear shells on their clothing, so that when they dance, the noise will wake up the dead; some will also dress up as the deceased. Sinfonia Mexicana was voted San Bernardino county’s “best” live entertainment of 2011 by readers of the Sun and Redlands Daily Facts newspapers. Aside from producing, Jack is on stage for every show conducting the orchestra and choir while Tommy is the host, emcee and performs on guitar. The video game industry puts on the show to help encourage and support the art and culture that video games have become. Video Games Live bridges a gap for entertainment by exposing new generations of music lovers and fans to the sym- phonic orchestral experience while also providing a completely new and unique experience for families and non-gamers. In 2010, Video Games Live and PBS joined forces to create an exclusive nationwide PBS special based around the highly successful Video Games Live concert series. Recently described by the New York Times as “Captivating!” and “Bombastic!”, the record breaking and award winning Video Games Live has continued its mission to demonstrate to the world how artistic and culturally significant video games and their music have become. “This is an incredible opportunity for us to reach an audience that normally may not be familiar with how far video games have come and how amazing the music can be,” said prolific game composer and CEO of Video Games Live, Tommy Tallarico. Almost everyone can tell a story of how trains have affected them or a family member. The Southwest Garden Railroad Show (SWGRS) brings all those memories back and gives us all the opportunity to get together and enjoy the real thing down to the model trains. This will be the 4th annual show held at the Fairplex in Pomona. The show will be held on Nov. 5-6, from 9am to 5pm both days. Admission for the show is $10 for adults, kids 16 and under are free. During that weekend, a great railroad museum, the oldest and probably the biggest garden railroad, will both be open, along with a miniature train ride for the kids, railroad displays from around the west coast, and manufacturers and vendors selling the best in large scale model trains. SWGRS also boasts a large live steam track; many garden railroaders run trains just like the real steam locomotives. Large scale trains have been growing in popularity for some time and southern California is a great environment to add trains to your garden. Imagine railroad tracks winding in and out of landscaping, plants, miniature structures, around ponds, through tunnels, and across bridges. Garden railroading is a hobby that involves the entire family and a challenge for the average gardener. Herbs, dwarf plants, and miniature trees and a little creativity are used to create an illusion of a little world inside your garden giving it some animation and making it come alive. G scale trains are a very diversified scale of model trains and great for people of all ages. Adults will find they are very detailed and durable. Kids like the large size and how they stay on the tracks. Trains can run by track power, battery, solar, and live steam. Examples of all will be at the show. SWGRS is one of only four large scale model train shows in the United States. It not only brings the sights and sounds of railroading, it also provides seminars on multiple aspects of the hobby, included with admission. Learn from Saturdays experts and get the chance to converse with many others with similar interests from all over the country. This year a railroad engineer’s hat will be given away to every child coming to the show, while quantities last. For more information, go online to www. swgrs.com. Do not let the peanut and Cracker Jacks sellers in the lobby fool you. They will just be setting the stage for the baseball-themed opening production of MainStreet’s 6th season. Honus and Me, adapted by Steven Dietz from the novel by Dan Gutman, opens Oct. 1 and runs through Oct. 16 at Rancho Cucamonga’s Lewis Family Playhouse, located at 12505 Cultural Center Drive. The play is based on the first in a series of Baseball Card Adventure books by author Dan Gutman about Little Leaguer Joey Stoshack. Joey lives for baseball, but is not a great player – in fact, he is known as the strikeout-king. But magical things happen when Joey touches a baseball card – and in this surprising play, the card he touches is none other than the famous T-206 Honus Wagner – the most valuable card in the world! The story brings the legendary ball player to life and sends Joey back in time to the 1909 World Series. “Honus and Me is about baseball, of course. We are thrilled to be doing it here in Rancho Cucamonga, which is such a baseball town! But it is also about families, about continuing to try even when you think you should give up and about learning how to do the right thing. The play is a real gem and we are hoping that all families, whether they enjoy baseball or not, will come out and enjoy it together,” MainStreet Producer Mireya “Murry” Hepner said. Steven Dietz is one of America’s most widely produced and published contemporary playwrights. Since 1983, his plays have been seen at over one hundred regional theatres in the United States, as well as Off-Broadway and all over the world. He is the recipient of many awards, including the PEN U.S.A. Award in Drama (for Lonely Planet), the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays Award (Fiction and Still Life With Iris); the Lila Wallace/Reader’s Digest Award (The Rememberer); and many others. In addition to Honus and Me, first produced by the Seattle Children’s Theatre in 2006, Dietz’s adaptations for children include Go, Dog.Go!, with Alison Gregory (produced in MainStreet’s 2007/2008 season) and Jackie and Me, based on another book in the “& Me” series. MainStreet has gathered talent from all over Southern California to bring the play to life. In the case of Honus and Me, the team not only includes tremendously talented artists, but a group of true baseball fans. Director Abigail Deser, a dedicated Little League mom, returns to MainStreet after staging Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse last season. Abigail’s career took her from New York to Chicago, where she was a member of the late great Roadworks Productions and a threetime guest of the Steppenwolf Theater Company, among many others. Set designer Tom Buderwitz’s (who coached his own son’s Little League team for many years) extensive regional and Los Angeles theatre credits include South Coast Repertory, Geffen Playhouse, Intiman Theatre, Pasadena Playhouse, Laguna Playhouse, Hudson Theater, Odyssey Theater, Reprise Theater Company, Celebration Theater and Theatre at Boston Court. The cast is led by Kevin Stidham as Joey and Cody Lyman as Honus Wagner. Kevin knows firsthand what it is like to be a young ballplayer. He started playing baseball when he was twelve in England and by the time he was seventeen, after playing for the Under-eighteen Great Britain National Team, his American coach suggested he come to Southern California to play. With his parents’ permission, he moved to America and pursued baseball while attending high school in Cerritos. As he entered college, he found his way into theatre. Stidham’s credits include productions at Theatre Banshee in Los Angeles and the Virginia Shakespeare Festival, among others. Cody Lyman (Honus Wagner) has spent the last eight years touring the country in the one man show Defending the Caveman, but also has ties to baseball – he spent a season as the PA announcer for the famed Saint Paul Saints. Oct. 9 is being designated as “Little League Day” at the Playhouse, with special games and activities for kids before the performance. Honus and Me, appropriate for ages six years and up, runs Saturdays at 1pm and 4pm and Sundays at 1pm (no performance on Oct. 2). Tickets are $16 for general admission, and $14 for seniors and youth. An intimate, 536-seat venue, the Lewis Family Playhouse is located in the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
