breakout
sessions
These breakout sessions are additional contexts for
you to explore things further. Seating may be limited
and will be offered on a first come, first serve basis.
Locations are in italics.
Most people think that preachers who ‘engage culture’ are simply
using a lot of high culture or pop culture references in order
to appear more credible to sophisticated people. If that is the
motivation it will not accomplish much. People do not realize
the degree to which their inner desires and motivations are
shaped by what their culture tells them they should be feeling.
To reach people’s hearts, preachers will have to show them
where the Bible challenges their culture and how their culture has
influenced them.
Tuesday, 1:00pm
in the Commons

Timothy Keller is the founding pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian
Church in Manhattan, which he started in 1989 with his wife,
Kathy, and three young sons. Dr. Keller was born and raised in
Pennsylvania, and educated at Bucknell University, GordonConwell Theological Seminary, and Westminster Theological
Seminary. In addition to his pastoral responsibilities, Dr. Keller
is also Chairman of Redeemer City to City, which starts new
churches in New York and other global cities, and publishes
books and resources for faith in an urban culture. He is the
author of over 10 books, and was one of the founders of the
Gospel Coalition.
BREAKOUT SESSIONS

Persuasive Preaching
david robertson
We believe that faith comes by hearing the Word of God. Most of
us as preachers are comfortable with the idea that our preaching
of the Word is building up the people of God, but it has become
increasingly difficult for us to see preaching as a primary means
of communicating the gospel to non-believers. In an increasingly
secularized, hostile and biblically ignorant culture, where the
adherent base of the Church is declining, is there still a role for
preaching as a primary means of evangelism? While evangelism
is ‘going out’ to people, when they are ‘brought in’, it is vital that
they are presented with biblical preaching that gives them ‘reasons
to believe’. In this session we will look at the idea of persuasive
preaching and the role of the preaching pastor in evangelism.
14
David Robertson is the minister of St Peter’s Free Church in
Dundee Scotland, the original church of Robert Murray M’Cheyne.
He is married to Annabel and together they have three children.
In addition to his pastoral responsibilities, David is also a trustee
of the Solas Centre for Public Christianity and works to fulfill the
Centre’s mission of engaging culture with the message of Christ.
As is reflected in his blog, he is particularly interested in the
growth, decline, and renewal of the church in the West. He is the
author of four books, Magnificent Obsession, The Dawkins Letters,
Quench and Awakening.

As we consider our responsibilities from Sunday to Sunday, we
must remember that we are not just called to be preachers, but
to be pastors. In this session, we will think about caring for the
souls of those in our charge as men who will have to give an
account.
Alistair Begg has been in pastoral ministry for over 30 years.
He served eight years in Scotland at both Charlotte Chapel
in Edinburgh and Hamilton Baptist Church. He has been the
Senior Pastor at Parkside Church near Cleveland, Ohio since
1983. He has written several books and is heard daily and
weekly on the radio program, Truth For Life. He and his wife,
Susan, have been married more than 30 years and have 3
grown children.
