Living Superior A Monthly Publication of Superior Care Home Nursing and Rehabilitation Center June 2014 National Nursing Assistants Week The 37th annual National Nursing Assistants’ Week, coming up June 12-19 this year, provides us the opportunity thank all of our nursing assistants here at Superior Care Home. When one of our residents presses his or her call button for assistance, a nurse aide will answer the call. Most of the time the nurse aide will know what that particular resident needs, because they know each of our residents that well. Nurse aides are the people who provide personal care to our residents 24/7. Their job is not the kind of job many people could do. It requires caring, patience, and a real love for the people they serve. We are proud of all of our nurse aides and the great job they do. This year’s Nursing Assistants Week theme is “Nursing Assistants are at the Heart of Caring.” Interactions with our residents and their families are central to caring. We are proud of the women and men who chose to be a part of the Superior Care Home nursing staff. We are so thankful for each and every one of our nurses all year-round, but especially applaud them during National Nursing Assistants Week. Thank you to all of our “Superior” Nursing Assistants! God is at work here- whether that’s through the smiles, the pats on the back, or the jokes and giggles. Everyone here will always be in our hearts. The facility is clean, efficient, and fabulous! We cannot begin to tell the entire staff how much they’ve done to help us. The staff is definitely under God’s umbrella. If there’s a time you’re looking for a place for your loved one, contact Superior Care first. The care here is excellent- We don’t have one single negative thing to say.” Superior Spring Banquet On May 14, 2014, Superior Care Home hosted our annual Spring Banquet, coinciding with National Nursing Home Week. This year’s theme, as decided by the American Health Care Association was “Living the ALOHA Spirit.” So, we celebrated with a luau! Residents and their family members were invited to attend the tropical-themed banquet, where they were served a special theme dinner prepared by our Executive Chef Jason Ison and the dietary department of Hawaiian pulled pork, sweet rice, fresh vegetables, and miniature pineapple upside down cakes. If you would like a copy of your family photo that was taken at the banquet, please call or email our Marketing Director, Leigh Ann Renfro, at (270) 442-6884 or lrenfro@superiorcarehome.com. Each month, we collect food items which are distributed by PCM to McCracken County senior citizens in need. PCM provides at-risk seniors with daily meal deliveries for a period of up to six weeks through the Emergency Mealson-Wheels Program. Saltine Crackers Any food pantry item is accepted with gratitude. Please place donations in the basket by the front door. SUPERIOR Living | Jun. 2014 | 2 Our goal for 2014 is 5,000 food items donated to PCM. At this point, with almost half the year complete, we are well past the halfway point to our goal. If you would like to join us in supporting PCM, please drop off any non-perishable food items in the blue bins by the front door of Superior Care. This month’s item is Saltine Crackers, which PCM especially needs at the moment. Superior Success Story: Betty Dalton “Any time you come in in an ambulance and can walk out one month later, I’d say that’s a success,” said Ms. Betty Dalton (pictured on the right). In Ms. Dalton’s case, it’s the truth. In her one month spent at Superior Care Home, she’s improved significantly - in all aspects of her health. She admitted to Superior after a five day hospital stay due to a torn quadricep muscle and a variety of other health issues that left her weak and in a high amount of pain. She is now 100% pain free and is planning to discharge to go back home with her family soon. She has particularly enjoyed her time in therapy and getting to know all of the therapists. Her fellow residents even formed a cheering section to root her on along the way. She believes that she would not be where she is today without everyone’s help and positive encouragement. When she admitted, her quad muscle hurt to the touch and she could barely get out of bed. Fast forward four weeks later, and she can be seen walking around the halls of Superior Care without the help and assistance that she once needed. “My favorite part has been the sense of family and home here,” Ms. Dalton said. “I’ve felt like I’ve belonged the second that I walked through the door. Superior has made both me and my family feel welcome every day. I want to thank Superior Care for being there when I needed them the most. They’ve taken care of me in every aspect of healthcare.” Superior Spotlight Why I like LIVING at Superior Care Why I like WORKING at Superior Care “Superior is my home. I have always been treated right. I really like my roommate - we get along very well. I also really like all the nurses, nurse aides, and everyone that works here.” “My favorite part of my job is interacting with the residents every day. I enjoy making their day and making them laugh. As long as you can get a smile, that’s wonderful.” - Betty Smith, resident - Earl Watkins, maintenance James Fennel Melvia Garland Elsie Glandon Sidney Herndon Joan Hille Lee Hodges Violet Johnson Wilma (Jean) Parker Irene Peck Florence Robertson John Rushing Dorothy Skinner Mary Smith Mary Turner HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Barbara is our Admissions Nurse who makes sure each new resident’s needs are met- from their medications to their therapy treatment. She is critical in helping new residents get comfortable in their new environment. Her favorite part of her job is getting to spend time and meet each new resident and their family and make sure they get settled in and that the staff understands their unique needs. Another favorite part of her job is getting to see “success stories” unfold by witnessing a resident’s improvement during their short-term rehabilitation stay. It makes her happy to see the great progress that is made on their journey to return home, back to their normal lifestyle. Barbara describes herself as a team player. She enjoys working together with all of the staff members to make sure each admission is successful. She is a graduate of Murray State and enjoys spending time with her two kids and five grandchildren. Please join me in congratulating Barbara as our May Employee of the Month. Her compassion for the residents and her co-workers, as well as the energy she brings into caring for them, make Barbara a “Superior” employee.
