Favoured by Mother Nature, this winter sports resort has chosen to capitalize on its specificities rather than succumb to the lure of standardization. Situated at the heart of the Evasion MontBlanc ski area, the 3rd largest in France, Saint-Gervais boasts a unique natural, architectural and cultural heritage. The highest town in western Europe, Saint-Gervais is home to the Mont-Blanc and the most direct itinerary to its summit. The roof of Europe, at 4810.45 metres altitude, dominates the resort and its 4 alpine villages, offering superb panoramic views to both skiers and sightseers. The Evasion Mont-Blanc ski area (Saint-Gervais, Megeve, Les Contamines/Hauteluce, Combloux and La Gietaz) stretches from the resort across 445 kilometres of tree-lined slopes. Another particularity of the resort is the Mont-Blanc Tramway (T.M.B), the highest railway in France (2372 metres) and one of the last rack and pinion railways in the world. The Tramway carries skiers towards the secondary ski area in the resort, Le Prarion and Les Houches. Number 1 alpine spa resort, Saint-Gervais is renowned since the 19th century. Visited by an aristocratic and wealthy clientele, the hydro-mineral spa gained an international reputation. Palaces, parks and casinos were built here. Today, the town centre is living proof of this “Belle Epoque” and the 19th century architecture lends a unique charm to the resort. Renowned for the hydrotherapeutic properties of its spring water the new baths in Saint-Gervais are a temple of well-being and serenity, open to the general public. Saint-Gervais wishes to safeguard this magnificent heritage in the aim to pass on the genuine authenticity to future generations. A year later, the first cable car to Mont d’Arbois was built with a record length at the time of 5 kilometres. In 1989, a new model of cable-car, TC12, replaced the existing lifts, creating the capacity to transport up to 3000 people per hour. After one or two tumbles comes the pleasure of control and technique on snow! Contact: Accrobike Mont-Blanc - 00 33 4 50 47 76 77 www.accrobikemontblanc.com Culture at the tip of your skis Founded in the 10th century, the parish of Saint-Nicolas de Véroce boasts superb views of the Mont-Blanc. Famous for its architectural treasures, Saint-Nicolas offers an out of the ordinary visit to skiers that pass from snow-covered slopes to the Baroque footpath. The church, a jewel of baroque art and the Museum of Sacred Art are both situated at the foot of the Chef Lieu chair-lift and can be visited “on skis”! The Baroque Church Dating back to the 11th century and dedicated to Saint-Nicolas, the baroque church in Saint-Nicolas de Véroce reminds us of the golden age experienced by this small alpine community during the 18th century. One will appreciate all the characteristics of a baroque frontage, the largely overflowing eaves and an entablature with painted frieze. The portal is the work of a local stonemason and reputed to be one of the most beautiful in the region. The door was carved by an Italian cabinet maker. However, very little remains of the original décor of 1751. Saint-Gervais is determined to preserve and restore its cultural heritage. As a result the church underwent significant restoration between 2001 and 2008. Open every day from 8am to 7pm. Entry free of charge. The Museum of SacredArt La Maison des Arts et des Artistes The Museum of Sacred art in SaintNicolas de Véroce opened in December 2010 and offers a key recollection of peasant alpine life, the church square and the baroque style of the village during the 18th century. It houses liturgical clothing, wooden polychrome statues, gold and silverware and numerous historical documents. The collection totals more than 600 objects dating from the 15th to the 19th century, some of which are classified historic monuments. The local “Treasure” reflects the parish’s prestigious history and the peddling traditions at the origin of the new church building in 1725. The museum is home to a number of exhibitions and workshops. Studies carried out by the architectural, building and environmental council (CAUE) inspired the creation of the “Maison des Arts et des Artistes”, a sort of mini “Villa Médicis” at the foot of Mont-Blanc. Residential artists, painters, sculptors, photographers and writers will create original pieces of work on site. Open every day, except Tuesday, from3pmto 6pm. La Maison Transfrontalière des Guides Prices: Adults 3.50€. Children from age 5 to 16 2€. Under 5s free of charge. HauteTour Two different projects are to be developed in the cultural centre at the Haute Tour Château, an ancient 13th century strong house situated at the heart of Saint-Gervais’ historical town centre. Purchased by the town council in 2003, archaeological digs have taken place, followed by a vast project to restore the building : The cultural centre within the Haute Tour building has the ambition to encourage art work and thus proposes a more reflective image of the mountains. The contemporary artists housed here in Saint-Gervais may then contribute a more critical view and offer a different vision of the Mont-Blanc to the general public. Saint-Gervais and Courmayeur (in Italy) and their respective mountain guides have associated in the creation of a new project : La Maison Frontalière des Guides. The project was founded on European funding from the ALOTERA 2007-2013 programme. The chief architect for historical monuments, J.F. Grange-Chavanis, was chosen to imagine an original and respectful renovation of the building. The Mountain Guides in Saint-Gervais have contributed to the research on the history of their profession.. Press Pack Saint-Gervais Winter 2012-13 - p. 11 Top alpine spa resort The Mont-Blanc Baths In Saint-Gervais, the highest spa resort in Europe, natural spa water springs from the heart of Mont-Blanc at a temperature of between 30 and 40°C. Naturally rich in precious minerals and trace elements, this water, high in sulphur content, is a true natural beauty serum that heals, soothes, comforts, softens and embellishes the skin. Endowed with renowned anti-age virtues it also boasts an anti-inflammatory action, ideal to prevent premature ageing of the skin and joints. These therapeutic benefits make Saint-Gervais the alpine capital of wellness, leader in dermatology and alpine balneo-therapy. The first winter season at the Mont-Blanc Baths was very successful. This oasis of naturally warm spring water dedicated to your health and well-being extends over a vast 1200 m2 area. A modern decor is conducive to deep relaxation and reflective of the mineral properties of Mont-Blanc. This new and unique concept presents itself in the form of a 2 ½ hour spa circuit designed and created by a group of specialists. The circuit is composed of three different stages, each of which has its own importance: Stage 1: Preparation This important stage is designed to help one to wind down, eliminate toxins and open the skin’s pores to optimize the therapeutic virtues of the natural spring water. Stage 2: Regeneration The second stage begins in the warm indoor baths and continues outdoors. This warm, counter-courant spa water itinerary involves a sequence of eight different hydrotherapeutic treatments that successively stimulate different areas of the body: hydro massage alcoves, massage jets, bubble beds and the famous “champagne bubbles” that stimulate the nerve endings.Hydrotherapy by hydro-massage is one of the most effective health techniques, contributing to the stimulation of the cardio-vascular system, improving circulation and toning the muscles.
