Institutional Community Involvement Center Quarterly Reports DECEMBER 2015– FEBRUARY 2016 1. College of Medicine – Student Action Medical Student Association (SAMA) Medical and Dental Mission in Pandacan, Manila on December 5, 2015 SAMA is a newly formed student organization of the College of Medicine intended to take charge on the community engagement programs in their field of expertise. In the said activity, there were 58 College of Medicine students who participated, 10 medical doctors and 10 dental doctors from the Philippine Dental Association. A total of 128 patients were served which include pediatrics and adult cases. Prior to the said activity, SAMA members raised funds by selling t‐shirts for a cause to finance the event. 2. Integrated Medical, Dental and Optometry Mission By the Mendiola Consortium Schools (San Beda College, Centro Escolar University, College of the Holy Spirit, La Consolacion College and St. Jude Catholic School) In Quiapo, Manila on December 12, 2016 There were 14 doctors from San Beda College of Medicine who represented the school together with our volunteer students working side by side with the optometrists, dentists, student interns and nurses of the Mendiola based schools. There were 87 delegates from the Mendiola Consortium schools for this collaborative joint project. A total of 323 patients were being served: 323 for medical, 58 for dental and 52 beneficiaries received the free eyeglasses. 3. Distribution of Christmas Packages to the San Beda Service Personnel and Partner Communities December 18, 2015 The College of Law, COL Bar Operations, CAS Office of the Prefect of Discipline, CAS Prefect of Activities, CAS Student Council and the Institutional Community Involvement Center synergized efforts to collect the noche buena packages and hams to be given to our service personnel, faculty and the members of our partner communities and outside institutions. The said items are tokens of appreciation for the fruitful collaboration and teamwork. A total of 1000 Christmas packages were distributed during the Annual Christmas Party hosted by the Office of the Rector President. Dr. Piscos preparing noche buena packages with volunteers Fr. Bede distributing goods in the partner community 4. Benefit Basketball Game: San Beda Red Lions Vs. FEU Tamaraw The San Beda Red Lions and FEU Tamaraws, PCCL co‐champions had the benefit basketball game last January 30, 2016 on the occasion of the Frolics Fiesta ng Santo Nino. The Athletics Department, Enactus (Entrepreneurship Action in Us) and the ICIC collaborated the project in order to raise funds for the livelihood programs in Pactil, Mountain Province. The total amount of thirty thousand and two hundred sixty pesos (Php.30, 260.00) was generated for additional capital of the mushroom and potato chips business in the place. During the game break, the Enactus members did their product selling and promotion. 5. Institutional Blood Donation by the SAMA, ICIC and the Philippine Blood Center The Institutional Blood Donation was held last February 11‐12, 2016 with the SAMA of the College of Medicine, ICIC and the Department of Health Philippine Blood Center (DOH PBC) co‐hosting the event. There were 30 SAMA active members who went room to room to promote volunteerism and the benefits of blood donation. There were 93 actual blood donors from the 150 volunteers who tried to join the activity. In return, the DOH PBC will help Bedan community members in need of blood without the much‐needed bureaucratic process. 6. Visit in Saint Louis University, Benguet State University and Department of Science and Technology Cordillera February 19, 2016 Exploratory Collaboration with SLU‐Baguio Consultation and Collaboration Talks with Benguet State University and DOST Cordillera ICIC and SBCBEFI visited Baguio to explore collaboration with St. Louis University Legal Aid Bureau in a joint project about empowering women in Cordillera through the US Embassy Grant. The team proceeded to Benguet State University to work on some technical needs to improve the production of mushroom growing in Pactil, Mountain Province. 2 placer Livelihood and Business BED – Finalist (Mr. Dante Salazar and Ms. Rosalina Ayonon) The Philippine Association of Extension Program Implementers had its 3rd International Conference last February 22‐23, 2016 at the University of the Philippines – Diliman with a guiding theme: “Literacy Programs: Approaches, Strategies and Practices toward Holistic and Sustainable Community Engagement”. There were 7 participants from the College of Arts and Sciences and 2 from the IBED Rizal. ICIC facilitated the San Beda entries in the community‐based paper presentation competition in all categories with the following results: Dr. Diosdado Aler III – First Place for Technology, Engineering and Sciences with a topic, “Empowering Calamity Stricken Communities through IT Training Programs” Dr. Liwayway Acero – Second Place for Health and Environment category “Bridging Instruction, Research and Community Involvement, the Health Environment Awareness Lecture Caravan (HEALC) of the Department of Natural Sciences‐San Beda College, Manila: An assessment Prof. Greg Borja, Prof. Pam Tendero and Prof. Jojo Villamin – Second Place, Livelihood and Business Category “Supplemental Business Literacy Clinics and Diagnostics for the Kankanays of Bauko, Mountain Province: A Sustainability Approach in Developing Livelihood Programs” Mr. Dante Salazar, Ms. Rosalina Ayonon, Mrs. Teresita Battad and Mrs. Aurora Limcumpao, Finalist for Literacy and Ethics (the lone entry in Basic Education and will serve as best feature in their upcoming PAASCU) “The Impact of Tutorial Program of San Beda College – Rizal as Perceived by the Students of the Partner Community (Hapay na Mangga) and their Class Advisers during AY 2015 – 2016” The judges are composed of Dir, Warren Nevad, Executive Director, Tennessee Renewable Energy and Economic Council, USA, Dr. John Peter Wanner, President, Balsamo Outreach Learning and Teaching, Tohoku University, Japan, Dr. Brent Jones, Professor, Hirao School of Management, Konan University, Japan and Dr. Angelito Meneses, faculty, Community Development studies, University of the Philippines‐
Diliman. 8. Technical Assistance for the Ordination of Rev. Fr. Henry Angupa, MI in Holy Family Catholic Mission, Sadsadan, Bauko, Mountain Province February 27, 2016 Instructional Media Center technician Mr. Bong Moyano and Mr. Arnold Gasparillo assisted the Sound System and Video Coverage for the Ordination of Rev. Fr. Henry Angupa, MI in the Holy Family Catholic Mission, Sadsadan, Bauko, Mountain Province last February 27, 2016. They were approximately two thousand (2,000) guests and visitors attending the occasion. SBCBEFI being composed mostly of Benedictine monks took pride in helping the logistical needs of the event since it is a celebration of vocation in the community, and at the same time the school’s sharing of resources and expertise to our partner community by our IMC personnel.
