Pupdate 1 - Guide Dogs
Pupdate 1 Settling in Freddie is off to a flying start You’re helping Freddie find his feet! Freddie’s journey to becoming a guide dog started when he moved in with his puppy walker’s, Jackie and her husband Norman. We recently made the trip to visit them to find out how he has been settling in. As a puppy walker it’s Jackie’s job to turn Freddie into a puppy that’s confident and well-behaved in all environments, such as restaurants, shops and on public transport. Freddie is in safe hands and is Jackie’s 14th guide dog puppy. So far Jackie’s been teaching Freddie his basic commands such as ‘sit’, ‘stay’ and ‘wait’. She told us “Freddie’s basic obedience training is going well. He’s a happy dog and is particularly good with both voice and whistle recall”. The recall skill is an amazing achievement for such a young dog. Guide dogs need to be confident on all forms of public transport, such as trains and buses. Even though Freddie hasn’t been on a bus journey just yet he has walked up and down a stationary bus so he can get used to the environment. Freddie stayed focused, despite all the people reaching out to stroke him. It’s great that Freddie concentrated on what he was doing and this will serve him well in the future. When Freddie isn’t training Jackie told us that he gets three free runs a week and his favourite toy is a soft reindeer toy that was bought for him from Guide Dog’s product catalogue called ‘Dogalogue’. Freddie lives with the families’ pet dog, Vinnie, who is a thirteen year old golden retriever cross Labrador. Jackie told us that “he acts as a sort of mentor to all the puppies that we train! If Freddie gets nervous around traffic or new situations Vinnie’s confidence rubs off on him”. Jackie mentioned that they have also been to a couple of local fetes. “There was quite a crowd of both people and dogs, Freddie took everything in his stride and behaved very well”. Sounds like Freddie is learning quickly and we couldn’t be more proud of him! Freddie has been a very busy little pup over the last few months. We can’t wait to find out what he has been up to in his next Pupdate in February.
