At the time, GDN Doors focused almost exclusively on service work as a source of revenue – including commercial and multiple unit buildings. While the company did some new installations, it was generally viewed as secondary to the real source of profits. Bill views the situation differently. He understands that service work generated profits for the company. Installations, he believes, are the drivers of future service work. He is convinced that even if a company has the best service teams in the market, it is the installation process that keeps the company brand in front of the people who make the service call decisions. “They see the sticker on the back of the door….and it makes our service sales efforts easier,” Bill keeps telling people. The problem is that many of the long time employees of GDN Doors disagree. This includes senior installers, office staff and the general manager. How can Bill convince other key decision makers at GDN Doors that it is worthwhile focusing on new installations? He wants to shift at least one of the top door technician teams away from service and onto installations, but this is not being well-received. How can Bill get buy-in? Are there risks to this strategy? about business models and also of implementing change. It’s best if the two issues are discussed separately. In this case, Bill is managing a business that has focused on service work as a primary source of profit. He does not want to shift away from this basic profit model. Instead, he believes that there is a role for installations to actually drive service work. This is very different from focusing on new installations as a primary source of profits. It is the means to an end. The bigger issue for Bill at this point is likely his need to get buy-in for his proposed change. Some managers wouldn’t even worry about getting buy-in. They make decisions, announce those decisions and expect them to be carried out. This can work to some degree, but it doesn’t optimize the operations of a company. Productivity is greatly enhanced when people understand why they are doing something. Bill should focus first on research. If, for example, he is able to show that current service work is strongly tied to past installations, he will then be in a strong position to explain his new focus. Alternatively, he may be able to use examples from other door dealers who have used a similar strategy (this is where networking at industry trade shows like the IDA Door Expo pays off). If Bill is not able to find past examples of where this has worked, a gradual implementation may make more sense. Results will do most of the work of convincing people of the merits of the idea. CASE 20-8: Staff on Facebook After 18 years of managing garage door installation companies, Bill thought that he had seen it all. As General Manager of GDN Doors, he oversaw all aspects of the company’s operations – sales, office staff, purchasing and installation. Bill had always believed in a fairly open style of management….. he didn’t make people punch in and punch out, but instead he focused on fair management – people should do a fair days work. He was also generous in allowing personal days. He frequently noted to his staff that family had to come first. His logic was simple. If he was compassionate to employee needs, he was confident that they would repay the company with dedication. But Bill has become increasingly frustrated by Facebook. More specifically, he is frustrated by how often he finds office staff on Facebook, Twitter and other social media and web sites during office hours. He had always believed that employees would effectively self-manage, but because of recent behavior, he now doubts that. Bill is considering banning non-business use of the internet at work. This would specifically target Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and other social media sites. The goal is to reclaim valuable work hours. Quite honestly, Bill isn't even sure that he can effectively enforce a ban on specific web sites. But beyond the questions of how it would be done, Bill wonders if it should be done. Are there any risks to this approach? Is there a different strategy that Bill could employ to achieve his stated goal? The new generation of PA18 Series features several housing innovations which increase their flexibility. The Garage Door News 8 AUGUST 2011 MANAGEMENT Shop When You’re Happy: Positive Feelings Improve Consumer DecisionMaking Abilities C onsumers who are in a positive mood make quicker and more consistent judgments than unhappy people, according to a new study in the Journal of Consumer Research. “There has been considerable debate about how affect (moods, emotions, feelings) influences the quality of people’s decisions,” write authors Paul M. Herr (Virginia Tech), Christine M. Page (Skidmore College), Bruce E. Pfeiffer (University of New Hampshire), and Derick F. Davis (Virginia Tech). “We join this debate by looking at affect’s influence on a very basic element of decision-making: deciding if an object is liked or disliked.” The authors manipulated study participants’ moods by showing them pictures of likable objects (puppies) or unpleasant images (diseased feet) or asking them to recall pleasant or unpleasant events from the past. After these “affect inductions” the participants viewed pictures of common objects one at a time. They then chose from a list of evaluative adjectives, positive and negative, which were presented in a random order. “Our prior research found that people respond faster to positive adjectives than negative adjectives,” the authors write. “The present work finds that this difference disappeared for people in the positive affect conditions.” Not only did people in the positive condition respond more quickly to adjectives, but they also responded more consistently. For example if they responded that they liked an object, they were less likely to respond later that they disliked it. “These results have implications for how we navigate our world,” the authors write. “The decisions we make about liking or disliking objects around us are fundamental to which things we approach and which things we avoid.” Retailers who want to create good shopping conditions may want to be aware of factors that can induce negative moods, like abrasive salespeople and negative shopping environments, the authors suggest. “The results may also be relevant for understanding consumer responses to new products in which an initial judgment of liking/disliking is critical to the product’s success,” the authors conclude. April 2011 has also been revised to 194,100 units. “Housing starts increased in June due to an increase in single and multiple starts in Ontario,” said Bob Dugan, Chief Economist at CMHC’s Market Analysis Centre. “The revised numbers show that housing starts have been above their trend line since March. However, we expect housing starts to move back towards levels consistent with demographic fundamentals in the near term.” The seasonally adjusted annual rate of urban starts increased by 2.2 per cent to 174,600 units in June. McCabe points out what went wrong and formulates a 48-hour action plan to turn bad jobs into jaw-dropping rooms. In this case the homeowners were looking to convert a single garage stall into an office space to use for their wedding photography business. Photography is all about capturing the right light and the designers wanted to find a garage door that would protect the equipment and make the space warm and welcoming by allowing a degree of natural light to flow inside. Chris Chapman and the team at One Clear Choice Doors in Denver managed the installation of the 10’ x 7’ door, which features a clear anodized aluminum frame with frosted tempered insulated glass panels. Clopay Adds Walnut Color to Gallery Collection Ultra-Grain Finish Line-Up OHIO - Clopay is adding a new color to its Gallery Collection Ultra-Grain line-up. The company is introducing a walnut finish option to complement the deep, rich color that is becoming increasingly popular on entry doors and other exterior stained wood products. The walnut shade also complements Clopay’s walnut entry door finish color. Clopay’s Ultra-Grain painted steel surface simulates a real stained door without the maintenance requirements of wood. The grain runs in two directions, both horizontally and vertically, following the stiles and rails. This detailing, along with the stucco surface texture on the door, provides a more natural looking appearance. No special maintenance is required to preserve the finish, beyond standard garage door manufacturer recommendations to wash and rinse the surface periodically. Gallery Collection window frames, grilles and inserts are color matched to coordinate with the walnut color. Complementing walnut stop mold is also available. When Quality Matters Professionals Choose 800-541-5677 www.americanaccess.com AUGUST 2011 CLOPAY (Cont'd) According to the company, the Model 3300’s heavy-duty 25 gauge steel exterior and expanded polystyrene insulation bonded to both steel skins provides an extremely durable door along with great insulating value. A Santoprene rubber joint seal prevents cold or heat from passing through the sections. The flexible bottom weatherseal with an aluminum retainer lessens conductivity of heat and cold, minimizes air and water penetration and accommodates irregular floor conditions. This becomes an important safety feature especially during the winter when freezing temperatures can instantly turn any moisture on the floor into ice, making it dangerous for those on foot. The doors’ baked-on polyester paint finish, heavyduty 3” galvanized steel hardware, and high cycle springs provide corrosion-resistance and long door life in this extreme environment. www.garagedoornews.com 15 The Garage Door News The Garage Door News 16 AUGUST 2011 Overhead Door Celebrates 90 Years of Progress and Distinction DALLAS – Overhead Door Corp., the company that invented the garage door and the electric garage door opener, is celebrating 90 years of door products and services this year with the launch of innovative openers and doors that bring added value to the homeowner. In celebration of its 90th anniversary this year, Overhead Door has launched a number of new products for both residential and commercial use, including an intelligent line of residential garage door openers that offer enhanced safety features and smooth operation. The company notes that at the same time, Overhead Door is delivering homeowners some of the best value for their dollar, as recent research proves that upgrading a home’s garage door delivers one the highest returns on investment among common remodeling projects. “The company that invented the garage door opener has just reinvented it,” said Gary Saletrik, Director of Product Development for Overhead Door. “Our new openers, coupled with any of our residential doors, offer homeowners a complete garage door system that is not only the most advanced in the industry, but also delivers exceptional value.” At the same time; research from Remodeling magazine proves that replacement of a standard garage door to one of higher quality is one of the easiest and most effective means of adding value to a home. According to the magazine’s 2010-2011 Cost vs. Value Report, homeowners who upgrade to a mid-range quality garage door can expect to see an average 84 percent return on investment when they sell their home. “Depending on the house, a front-facing garage door can comprise up to 30 percent or more of a home’s view from the curb,” said Preston Bowen, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Overhead Door Corporation. “That means by choosing to upgrade, a homeowner can achieve a dramatic improvement to their property’s curb appeal and a tremendous value at the same time.” Overhead Door was founded in 1921 by C.G. Johnson. Observing the rise of the American automobile industry and the increasing availability of automobiles for the average American, Johnson recognized that an alternative was needed to replace standard barn doors, which were difficult to use and provided little security. His answer was the upward-acting sectional door, invented in 1921 and released in 1923. Three years later, he introduced the electric garage door opener. After 90 years, Dallasbased Overhead Door has builtup a network of more than 450 authorized Ribbon Distributors in both the United States and Canada. The corporation employs more than 3,500 people. These questions are real, and the answers are provided by other internet users, not by the Garage Door News. We are printing these questions to let the industry know what types of information people are looking for about garage doors and garage door openers. The answers will give you an idea of what type of "neighborly advice" is being given out. Please fax us your comments or concerns about this column (866-838-2967). QUESTION 1: The rubber weatherstrip under my garage door is breaking apart. How do I replace or repair it? Do I have to remove the two wheels on either side of the door in order to remove the weatherstrip from the door? QUESTION 1, ANSWER 1: Take it off and buy a replacement. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 2: Try a hardware store or a garage door sales/repair organization. You need a good stapler/tacker and long staples. The stuff comes in a couple of different widths, so get the right one -- either measure, or bring a sample. The width is the bottom of the door, not the seal itself. Make sure the bottom of the door is clean, etc., so that the seal fits well. Total time, maybe 1/2 hour, not counting the trip to the store. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 3: The channel may be damaged. Most modern doors have a channel into which the rubber piece slides. If you can get the old one out, clean the grooves and the new one should slide right in. I am fairly sure I have seen the rubber replacement parts at Lowes and Home Depot for about $20. If you need to replace the channel, I suspect you will still need to get the old seal out and I imagine it is screwed to the bottom of the door. Anything is better than nothing in the winter. I would work on this in the spring. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 4: I recently replaced the seals under three doors at my house. I went to Lowes. They wanted a little over $2/ft. I checked with a local door company and they charged $1/ ft and it looks/feels like a better quality product. If you do have the type where the seal slides into a 25 AUGUST 2011 THIS MONTH'S QUESTIONS QUESTION 1: QUESTION 2: QUESTION 3: QUESTION 4: Replacing bottom weatherstripping Building a wood garage door Problems with X10 interference Developing an X10 recognition system grooved aluminum channel, you'll need to pry open the ends of the channel a bit to get the old stuff out. Most installers shove the seal in place, smash the ends to anchor it, then cut it off. I pulled fresh seals, wrapped and tucked the ends so they don't need to be smashed, then I did something that I thought was fairly smart. I took a piece of garden hose and inserted it into the end of the seal, and pushed it through to the other side. It gives the bottom of the door more "give" and it seems to seal better. It also compensates for rough or uneven floors. QUESTION 1, ANSWER 5: HomeDepot and local suppliers have gotten a good bit of my recent business. Great tip about the garden hose. QUESTION 2 (From the U.K.): I'm planning to make a timber garage door, which will be painted. Could someone please advise as to what kind of timber I'll need... planed, treated, kilndried? Presumably not rough-sawn construction timber? I'm guessing the answer is probably pressure-treated. But is that OK to paint over, and if so, what first coat should I use? Or would planed or kiln-dried be OK? QUESTION 2, ANSWER 1: It depends upon how long you want it to last. I built a pair of gates using pressure treated planed timber in1981 and they still look as good as new. If I remember correctly, we had to use an aluminium based primer because of the treatment. These days I would use oak. In my experience, it is not much more expensive than pressure treated softwood, but will long outlast it and it looks good without painting. Of course, it does attack iron, so you need to choose your fixings accordingly. However, for something that is going to need to last, like the gates I mentioned, I use boat building bronze ring barb nails anyway. QUESTION 2, ANSWER 2: Can you get pressure-treated timber that has been planed rather than rough sawn? QUESTION 2, ANSWER 3: You can even order it planed and cut to length before being treated to ensure that the end grain is properly impregnated. QUESTION 3: Does anyone have one (or two) of the Big Red wireless doorbell alert kits? It appears it was first made as just an emergency button for indoor use but does the "big red button" hold up outside? What I want to do is to set up two units on the same frequency so ringing the doorbell at the house or the shop rings at both the house and the shop. Range should be OK since it comes with a transceiver, but will the transceiver work with the signal going out of my house panel to the drop, then to the drop and panel in the garage? Both drops are on the Continued Next Page These questions are real, and the answers are provided by other internet users, not by the Garage Door News. We are printing these questions to let the industry know what types of information people are looking for about garage doors and garage door openers. The answers will give you an idea of what type of "neighborly advice" is being given out. 26 The Garage Door News WEB (Cont'd) same transformer secondary. QUESTION 3, ANSWER 1: My neighbor and I both had some X10 gadgets and we were interfereing with each other. My garage door opener would turn on X10. Purpose was to turn on the lights in the house when you got home. Well it turned his on too. I was getting home at 2:30 AM so you can imagine how much he enjoyed this when his living room lamps came on. QUESTION 3, ANSWER 2: Ever randomly try your garage door opener on other doors? Way back a bored customer in my driveway waiting for me to show up hit his door opener and my neighbors garage door opened showing his Porsche 911. He closed it again but then the neighbor came out to see what was going on. Just gave him dirty stares. Now the closest house to me is about 600 to 800 feet away so even if we use the same code I doubt it would work. Oh, and our power lines come from two different directions, about a mile of wire, and of course different transformers. QUESTION 4: I was trying to do something which I thought would be simple but it's not. I have some Insteon switches in the house, and was looking to move a bit outside. What I'd like is for my system to detect when a car pulls into the driveway (motion detector at the end of the driveway). When the car pulls into the driveway, I would like the house front lights and the front foyer lights to turn on. The front lights would be on a timer so they would turn off after ten minutes. When I'm leaving the house, I would press the 'Going Out' button, which turns off all the lights in the house, turns down the thermostat, but turns on the front house lights on (again, on a ten minute timer). If the car drives out of the driveway in that ten minutes, it would not reset the timer, etc because it knows I'm leaving. Of course, no lights would turn on if it's light outside, and there would be an override switch that allows me to manually turn the lights on or off (for when I'm shoveling the driveway, etc). First, I'm wondering if anyone has tried something similar. If so, how they accomplished it and what their success is/was. What technologies were used etc. (I don't mind moving to a different technology here, as none of the components save the 'going out' button would interact with the inside lights.) Next, I don't think I can do the above without running a computer 24/7, which I'd like to avoid but, if I did do that, I was wondering if people could recommend some software, etc. Last, I'm wondering about motion detectors -- does anyone know of any good detectors that could survive a Canadian winter? I don't want to buy something that bums out once it drops below -20. QUESTION 4, ANSWER 1: I designed and built my own system, based on a 8052 processor, but there are lots of commercial systems available. You can probably do the lights and driveway thing with X10 modules. There are X10 IR motion sensors (not weatherproof?) and controllers which you can program to sense the motion signal and turn on/off various lights. Once programmed, they remember to operate independently of the computer. My system controls the house and hot tub temperature, various lights in the house and garage, house alarm system, and alerts me if doors open or are open or unlocked when I set the alarm on.
