By the decree of the 25th May 1804, it replaced Fontenay-le-Comte as administrative centre for the Vendée. Napoleon imposed the construction of a new town which was to be modelled on the concept of the “ideal city” from ancient history. La Roche-sur-Yon forms a pentagon and is organised like a Chinese Checkers board, spreading out from a central point, in this case, The Place Napoléon, which boasts a statue of the emperor astride his horse. MECHANICAL BEASTS IN THE OPEN AIR The origins of these uniquely fascinating mechanical beasts are closely related to the origins of La Roche-sur-Yon and its founding emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte. In The Place Napoléon you can admire the menagerie that was transported back from the General’s campaign in Egypt at the end of the 18th century, and now given a new lease of life by La Machine association from Nantes. Young and old alike can use the various controls and levers to manipulate a crocodile from the Nile, a camel, a hippopotamus and even a sacred ibis. Be a part of the show! Otter Camel arge! In the north, the river forms a lake behind the dam at Moulin Papon. In the south, it slowly descends to Piquet, one of the most picturesque parts of the valley. The valley, with its 100 acres of land set aside for a variety of activities, is perfect for those who want to leave the confines of the town behind them and in a trice, embrace nature’s charms. Inhale the leafy air as you walk or cycle for an hour or a day, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the nearby seaside resorts. 16 APPRECIATE THE ART OF LIVING | KEEPING FIT WALKING AND CYCLING With over 36 trails (between 2 to 12 miles long) to choose from, there are endless possibilities to explore the local scenery and enjoy the area’s mix of cultural and natural landmarks. Two of the Vendée’s main cycle routes pass through the Yonnais district: one takes you to the seaside while the other takes you past the bocage (farmland typical of the west of France). HORSE RIDING The horse has had a key role to play in the history of the area. Our Yonnais equestrian centres organise pony trails and outings in horse-drawn carriages so that visitors can appreciate the beauty of the surrounding countryside in the company of a noble steed. ’ GUIDE AND LA THE ‘VENDEE VELO CYCLING GUIDE ROCHE-SUR-YON e Tourist are available at th e of charge fre re Information Cent IDE (In French) A LOCAL WALKS GU urist Information is on sale at the To Centre (€3). 17 APPRECIATE THE ART OF LIVING | HAVING FUN HAVING FUN FLYING ACTIVITIES HOT AIR BALLOONS (Montgolfiere) Aérodrome René Couzinet - Les Ajoncs 85000 LA ROCHE-SUR-YON 06 42 97 29 42 www.volabulle.com 2/ CANOEING (Canoe) (3) CLUB PARACHUTISTE VENDEEN (1) CAMPING LE MOULIN DE RAMBOURG 51, Rambourg – 85310 NESMY 02 51 07 63 83 www.campingmoulinderambourg.com Aérodrome René Couzinet - Les Ajoncs 85000 LA ROCHE-SUR-YON 06 07 02 33 45 www.clubparachutistevendeen.com 1/ AMUSEMENT/LEISURE PARKS FUNSHINE 9, la Morinière 85280 LA FERRIERE 02 51 98 42 86 www.funshine.fr AEROCLUB YONNAIS ROYAL KIDS GILDING (Vol A VOILE) LASER GAME EVOLUTION Aérodrome René Couzinet - Les Ajoncs 85000 LA ROCHE-SUR-YON 02 51 37 05 17 www.aeroclub-yonnais.com 66, rue Savary de l’Epineraye 85000 LA ROCHE-SUR-YON 02 51 62 23 58 www.royalkids.fr Aérodrome René Couzinet - Les Ajoncs 85000 LA ROCHE-SUR-YON 02 51 05 01 91 www.planeur-vvy.fr Rue Guillaume De Machaut 85000 LA ROCHE-SUR-YON 02 51 37 19 92 www.lasergame-evolution.com MICROLIGHT AVIATION (ULM) (2) CITY ZÈBRES M.
