From Iraq, with Love (continued from page 12) Robin tried to get her deployment delayed a day or two, so the kids would not have to lose both parents in a single day. She will now drive more than 140 miles a day roundtrip to base, just so she can still tuck her 2 and 3 year olds into bed every night. Well, almost every night. Robin’s unit will train soldiers before they deploy to Iraq. That includes weekend and overnight combat drills and trainings, so she can’t guarantee that she will be home. And without family in the area, the Corradis rely on help from the local Baptist church. “So, the next two months are going to be pretty rough,” she said. “It just continues. The location is the best that it can be. It happens to a lot of people. We’ll get through this.“ Robin knows the benefits of a strong community presence and encourages anyone who wants to help to contact their local church, USO, military recruiters or National Guard offices to find out ways to help, whether it’s babysitting or snowplowing. “It makes a huge difference to have someone you know you can call up and count on,” she said. “It’s really hard to put into words, but something will come up, like the lawnmower breaking or one of the kids getting sick. Small stuff like that; those are the things that will happen.” To find out how you can make a difference helping military families in your own community, visit the Trinity website at www.ths.org/alumni. Trinity’s Newest Board Member Brings Wealth of Educational Experience As Trinity High School’s newest member of our Board of Trustees, Dr. Sonia A. In addition, Alemagno’s university experience gives her a unique perspective on how to prepare high school students for the rigors of college life. Her experience and success with grant writing has already proven incredibly beneficial to the Trinity family. With Alemagno’s assistance, Trinity is in the process of waiting for approval on math department grants that could total $30,000. ALL SOULS MASS ALUMNI PRAYER SERVICE Students, faculty and staff gathered, along with almost 30 alumni, to remember departed loved ones during our annual All Saints/All Souls Day Liturgy. Trinity graduates reconnected with the school they called home, and found a certain peace in the embrace of our loving family. “The Mass on November 1 was a very moving experience for me,” said 1992 graduate Judy Lasecki. “Not only was I remembering my mom, but I was also thinking about all the great times I had at Trinity High School. It was nice to talk with some of my ‘old’ teachers, meet some new teachers, and see all the students taking an active role in the Mass,” Lasecki said. “The choir and music were beautiful! Often during the liturgy, I found myself remembering all the wonderful liturgies and Masses I experienced when I was a student.” “From the moment I received the invitation letter, to the ending of the Mass, I felt truly blessed to be a part of such a caring and supportive community,” she said. “That old Trinity pride and spirit came back to me once again. What a special and loving tribute to my mom! She always loved Trinity and I’m sure she was smiling down from heaven on that day.” 4.Tradition.Winter07 Over Thanksgiving break, 2005 Trinity grad Kyle Komer was feeling nostalgic. “A lot of my friends and I missed the retreat feeling that we had while we were at Trinity,” he said. “I had the idea that as the Class of ‘05, we should do something to rekindle our faith.” So, Komer and classmates Derrick Moore and Eric Wunderle planned a prayer service over Christmas Break, when the majority of their class would be home from college. “Everything worked out beautifully in the chapel,” Komer said. “We had about 30 former students attend. Marymount Class of 1951 Every year is a reunion year since our 45th reunion in 1996. We have been getting together at least once a year to renew old friendships and to enjoy catching up on our lives. At our 50th reunion, many of us felt we were “coming home,” celebrating Mass together in the chapel where we once sat as young girls. Our hearts were filled with gratitude for sharing the day with life-long friends. Many of those in attendance will not soon forget Fr. Joseph O’Donnell’s wonderful homily, and the many tears shed that sunny Sunday morning. Many of us get together at our annual luncheon each October. We hope to continue as long as our classmates are interested in attending. New friends may be silver, but old friends are definitely gold. Marymount Class of 1956 The last class to graduate from Marymount High School, housed in Marymount Convent, held their 50th Class reunion on September 24, 2006. The day started with Mass celebrated by Fr. Gary Chumura. Thirty-four alumnae met in the Marymount Chapel. Shirley Soltes, chairman of the 50th Reunion Committee acknowledged the deceased classmates and teachers with a candle lighting ceremony and special songs. An exquisite luncheon was held at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The classmates enjoyed a slide show featuring the graduate’s pictures and many special pictures from our high school days. Trinity Class of 1981 Over 60 members of the class of 1981 attended their 25th Reunion on November 25, 2006 at Dave & Buster’s in Westlake. The evening flew by as we reminisced about the good old days and caught up with one another in roles such as parents, air plane crash investigators, business owners, and even grandparents! We even had classmates come from Georgia and Kansas! A 30 year reunion is already being talked about and we look forward to seeing everyone in 5 years! Walburn, who now lives in Stow with her husband and two children, always wanted to write. After earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in counseling, she is now focusing her attention on a hobby that looks like it could turn into a hot career, using her pen name to keep those dual careers separate. While working on her second novel, as well as promoting The Exchange at book signings, Walburn also works part-time with troubled adolescents in a partial hospitalization group and with mentally disabled individuals. She is also busy raising her children, 5-year-old Logan, and Brooke, 3. Walburn received help and inspiration from Trinity classmate and friend Cindy Carr, who edited the original manuscript before Walburn sent it to any publishers. “The book selling is going well,” Walburn said. “I have received positive book reviews and good feedback from people who have bought the book. Alumni Author Pens First Novel I have been having fun with my book signings and learning the ins and outs of the industry.” Involved at Trinity as a hockey stat when she was a student, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that one of her characters in The Exchange is a hockey player. “My favorite high school memory is from my sophomore year, when the hockey team went to states as the Cinderella comeback team,” Walburn said. “It was so exciting to go from a losing season and make it all the way to the state championship. I also enjoyed all of the hockey tournaments in Miami, Ohio every Thanksgiving.” Walburn was also involved in Trinity’s annual phone-a-thons, worked on homecoming floats for her class and helped plan retreats for the younger students. But it’s the academic advantage she gained while at Trinity that has had the biggest impact on her life. “Trinity helped me in my career,” she said. “Overall, my experience at Trinity helped me to learn how to study for college, how to write well, and how to set realistic plans to achieve my goals. I have wanted to write a book since I was in grade school. I broke into the business with some good luck. I submitted my manuscript to a few different publishing companies. Publish America responded and wanted to read the first few chapters. They liked what they read and gave me the contract for my book. “My advice for current students is to work hard, follow their own dreams, don’t be blinded by love to the point of giving up what is important to them, study and work hard, and cherish the fun times they have now. I would also recommend keeping anything they have written because I threw away a lot of things I wrote in high school that I wish I had now.” Copies of Walburn’s book The Exchange are available at Borders, The Learned Owl in Hudson, and online at Amazon.com, Borders.com and BarnesAndNoble.com. Her next novel is due out in 2009. To read a synopsis of The Exchange, visit www.ths.org/alumni. The insurgents have changed their tactics, regrouped. You can’t trust anyone.” Robin knows that these last four months of her husband’s tour are the most dangerous. “It does make me worry a lot more,” she said. “Every day, something’s happening. It’s very tough to be a military family. It’s a huge strain on any marriage.” A member of the Army Reserves, and an Army brat herself (Robin’s dad is a retired Lieutenant Colonel, and her grandmother also served during World War II), sometimes all the training in the world can’t prepare you for the realities of war. “When I see something on the news, and my husband’s over there, I worry just like a non-military spouse would,” she said. “Those things affect me.” Married just three weeks after 9/11, Dante and Robin have missed out on three wedding anniversaries and have yet to take a honeymoon. “Right after 9/11, I knew our lives would change,” Dante said. “I knew we were going to be in it for awhile.” He has never been home to celebrate his 2-year-old’s birthday. While he admits the time apart has been a struggle, Dante is adamant about America’s role in Iraq. President George W. Bush presented the President’s Volunteer Service Award to Bernice Mucha Ursich (47) during a visit to Cleveland last summer. Ursich has been a volunteer with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Greater Cleveland for 12 years and has logged more than 2,300 hours of service. But her commitment to the community extends far beyond one organization. After retiring from her job as Chief Court Reporter for the Cleveland Municipal Court, Ursich became a patient care volunteer with Hospice of the Western Reserve. “After retiring in 1995, I thought it would be a fulfilling experience to volunteer with terminally ill patients,” she said. “So I took the training offered by Hospice of the Western Reserve, and actively volunteered in the capacity of patient care until 2004.” While volunteering at Hospice, another opportunity arose through RSVP for an exercise assistant in water therapy, concentrating on an arthritis program, at Judson at University Circle, an accredited interdenominational retirement community. “I met with their Wellness Director, Sara Peckham, and she arranged a program whereby I could assist a resident, one-on-one, with their prescribed exercise routine. It has proven to be a most gratifying experience for me, and the residents seem to enjoy it as well. I have been actively participating in this assignment since about 2000.” “We’re doing a lot of good things over there,” he said. “We’re going to be in there for the long haul. Occupations after war are nothing new. I still support what we do. I still believe this is a war on terror. We need to see this through. I’d rather fight on foreign soil. I feel that we have to do this now so my children won’t have to do this later. These fanatics have to be dealt with.” In her “free time,” Ursich has also volunteered as a “redcoat” usher at the Playhouse Square Center for 15 years. “Being a redcoat not only allows me to see a star-studded performance for free, but I personally get caught up in the excitement of the patrons and their anticipation of an entertaining show,” she said. Dante recently was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. A career military man, he is due to retire in three years. Yet, he expects one more overseas tour before he can retire. The Volunteer Service Award is the President’s way of saying “thank you” to those who make a difference in the lives of others. President Bush has met with more than 500 individuals around the country since March, 2002. Unfortunately, it seems that just when Dante is expected to return home to his family this summer, it will be Robin’s turn to serve at least a year. A First Lieutenant with the Army Reserves, Robin understands that she, too, could be deployed at any time and was actually called up twice, but did not have to go because each time she was expecting one of their two children. She recently received mobilization orders for Fort Bragg and was due to report for duty on February 1, the same day Dante was scheduled to go back to Iraq. “It’s not exactly how we planned it,” Dante said. “But we’ll just drive on. I’m not complaining. That’s life in the military. That’s just part of the job; we go through that. The upside is, Robin’s not going to Iraq.” (continued on page 19). “Being chosen as a USA Freedom Corps greeter and meeting President Bush was an honor and memorable experience I shall never forget,” Ursich said. “I think it is a very nice gesture for the President to recognize volunteer service, and I deeply appreciate the opportunity to be a recipient of the President’s award.” In addition, Ursich is actively involved in remaining close with the other members of her class, especially Dorothy Smiley May. “Our Class of 1947 is definitely alive and well,” she said. “We have met annually for dinner ever since our 50th reunion. We still think of ourselves as girlfriends.” 1. Corradi at home with his family. 2. Corradi with orphaned Iraqi children. 3. We knew what we were getting into when we got married. We all want to do our job.” Dante met Robin, 37, while both were living in Albany, New York in the mid-1990s and married in 2001. Best Man was Mark Hoprich (82) and Groomsman was John Kaminski (82). Ryan Downey (2009), Emily Downey, (2011) and Dan Downey, children and husband of Dawn Laba Downey (85) were also in the wedding. Married for almost 6 years, Dante has been away from his family for most of that time. He is expected to return home in June 2007. from iraq, with love The Trinity community continues to hold in our prayers all of our brave members of the Armed Forces who are serving our country. Below, 1982 graduate Dante Corradi shares his story of sacrifice and struggle. ess than twelve hours after helping his wife Robin through the birth of their first child, US Army Major Dante Corradi (82), found himself on a plane bound for Iraq. Already deployed overseas in Kuwait at the time of the baby’s delivery, the 39-year-old could only listen in on the birth of his son, Tony, over the telephone. The next day, he found himself in Bagdad. “I was already in Kuwait getting ready to convoy into Iraq when I tracked down my wife in the hospital,” says Dante, now 43. “I heard his birth over the telephone. Less than 12 hours later I convoyed into Iraq with a portion of my unit for the first time. So, I always know the day I went into Iraq,” he says wryly. “But I got to hear my son. I did hear him cry. A lot of people don’t get that.” Dante says he’s missed more special occasions, anniversaries and birthdays than he’d care to admit, and he’s seen his mother’s health suffer as a result of the stress of his deployments. He returned home to Raleigh, NC, from his first tour in Iraq in March of 2004, and enjoyed the birth of his second child, Patricia. Dante also has a stepson Jake, 13. But the homecoming was short-lived. Dante soon received a second deployment, finding himself on enemy soil again in June 2006. Still, he and Robin count their blessings. “I will call home from Iraq and sing Happy Birthday to her,” Dante says of 10.Tradition.Winter07 Yet Dante focuses on the positive, sharing fascinating stories and some amazing photos of the places he’s been, including pictures of Saddam Hussein’s former palace, ancient and historic sites, such as the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Egyptian Pyramids, and the ancient city of Ur, the Biblical birthplace of Abraham. While he marvels at some of the impressive monuments he’s seen, Dante is quick to point out that other villages and towns are in ruins, many never even rebuilt from the first Gulf War. His favorite duty in Iraq is accompanying medical personnel to orphanages. “One of my favorite parts of a deployment is interacting with the children. They are not much different than the children in the United States. Kids are kids. And many are so cute. I visited the orphanages in 2003. I haven’t had the opportunity to do that now,” he said. “I personally did not give medical aid to the children. I just played with them for a couple of hours.” “I still support what we do. I still believe this is a war on terror. We need to see this through.” While Dante can joke about his Army-issued eyeglasses, he chokes up remembering a party for Italian soldiers who were due to go home in two days. The next morning, they were killed by a suicide bomber. Friends now gone before the film from his camera was even used up, picturing the revelry from the night before. “There are some great, tough, and tragic experiences from my deployments, especially from 2003 to 2004. Fortunately, the good outweighed the bad,” he says matter-of-factly. A third generation military man, Dante has represented his unit as a Liaison Officer with the Multi-National Division - Central South, a coalition of Eastern European Armies led by the Polish Army. Stationed in Babylon, Dante worked with the Polish Army in their transition to take over an area for logistical support as the Marines were redeploying back to the U.S. During that time, former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld paid a visit, and the accompanying photo of Rumsfeld and Dante ran on Yahoo. “I had my 15 minutes of fame,” he jokes. Currently a member of a Military Transition Team, Dante is embedded with an Iraqi infantry battalion, where he serves as a 11.Tradition.Winter07 missing his daughter’s birthdays. “This is life in the military, and my wife and I knew what we were getting into when we joined. Currently a member of a Military Transition Team, Dante is embedded with an Iraqi infantry battalion, where he serves as a 11.Tradition.Winter07 Presidential Honor 1 2 3 logistics advisor. With the help of an interpreter, he advises the Iraqis on how they can be more efficient in logistics, the life support for Iraqi soldiers, responsible for providing food, water, ammunition, transportation, supplies, maintenance of equipment, and more. “It is a big job, but important to the battalion, so that they are able to carry out their combat missions,” Dante said. “Things sure are a lot different down here, and that was expected. 3.
