Dear Customer,
Across the Black Sea region, crop yields
remain strong although Russia and
Ukraine both expect a slight decrease
in yields compared to 2014. However,
this is offset by a general trend towards
growth, as seen over the last five years.
Weather conditions, as always, have a
direct impact upon crops, their planting,
growth, harvest and yields. In 2015,
although the year started well with
generally fine conditions for planting,
there has been more rain than usual
since and temperatures have been lower
than average.
Even so, a surprise weather front in
Russia just before the start of the
harvest – heavy rainfalls with hail and
strong winds during the last ten days
of June – affected all the key grain
producing South and Black soil regions.
This meant that many of the inspected
fields were found with ears of barley and
wheat lying on the ground. At the same
time, Russia has a drought in the Samara
and Saratov regions (Volga) so the
forecast is for a decrease of yield here.
The influence of weather conditions
may cause some adjustments to the
preliminary forecast for the general grain
harvest in Russia and to the estimates
made about the quality of the new crop.
Based on our crop tour assessment and
the first tested samples of new crop,
we expect problems with the falling
quantity, the corresponding decrease in
protein and gluten („washing up“), and
the likelihood of fungus agro diseases in
the South and Black soil regions. From
Volga, we expect a low test weight but
high protein. We will determine the exact
quality during our Grain Quality Map
2015 project which starts on 15/07/15
in Russia and Ukraine and later in
Kazakhstan.

NON-GMO EXPORTS FROM UKRAINE
SGS has made it possible for clients to export certified non-GMO crops from the Ukraine.
the value of crops. A MT of nonGMO soya may fetch $350 US, but
if contaminated by GMO its value is
significantly reduced.
IPP IN ACTION
SGS developed an Identity Preservation
(IP) programme following two decades
during which the failure of monitoring
systems in Ukraine meant it was almost
impossible to prove that crops were
GMO-free.
In 2012, after stringent monitoring,
sampling, testing, analysis and
certification, our IP programme enabled
a client to export the country’s first nonGMO parcels, some 600 MT of nonGMO soya. This rose to 100,000 MT in
2013 and continues to grow today.
ADDING VALUE
GMO contamination seriously reduces
SGS’s IPP relies on extensive sampling,
testing, monitoring, supervision and
inspections. To certify that a crop is
non-GMO, some 25-30 samples will be
taken for every 10,000 MT of soybeans
and tested using PCR. In addition,
some 150-200 samples will undergo
express-testing before certification
can be issued. This compares to just
one sample per 10,000 MT for loading/
unloading supervision sampling.
There are two routes to IPP certification.

Seed to Loading: monitoring starts
with the seeds. SGS checks seeds,
before planting, then on maturity of
the plants we monitor harvesting,
storage and loading to containers.

Silo to Loading: monitoring starts
at the inland silo, during or preshipment, when samples are taken
from the elevators in the silos. If
tests are negative, the grains are
loaded onto wagons, and the rechecked at the port storage facility
and when loaded into vessels.
SGS SERVICES
IPP has proven very successful for
SGS clients in Ukraine, before this
programme no soya beans could be
exported as non-GMO. We offer testing
for GMO, using real-time Polymerase
Chain Reaction (PCR) testing equipment,
and for all known GMO events.

UKRAINE
Putting facts, figures and research at the
fingertips of clients has been a driving
force behind investment in services and
skills for SGS in Ukraine this year.
TOXICOLOGY TESTING
Launched in 2014, SGS Ukraine’s
toxicology testing laboratory delivers
a broad range of testing, and has
completed more than 200 samples for
dioxin testing.
With the majority of Ukraine’s corn
exports destined for China, we have
developed extensive testing and analysis
methods. These include most of the
pesticide requirements for commodities
destined for China.
Preparations are well underway for our
laboratories to manage the influx of
samples for testing and analysis in the
2015 season. There is particular focus
on the rapeseed crop, as it must be
dried in silos, and this is the process
during which dioxins can occur. There
is particular risk in silos using old
equipment and fuel which has been
heated before.
GMO IDENTIFICATION
Ukraine’s issues with GMO
contaminated crops have long been
understood, and activities have been
put in place to mitigate the issues and
even fight back. Recently, SGS’s GMO
testing services have been meeting
client needs for genotype determination
of plants, to fight back against fake
products/seeds being sold in Ukraine.
We use Polymerase Chain Reaction
(PCR) testing to identify which hybrids
and varieties have actually been planted.
MICROBIOLOGICAL TESTING
Often, exports require microbiological
pathogen testing before cargoes can
be accepted at their point of entry. We
have launched a new testing service,
checking cargoes for pathogens,
including viruses, to meet countryspecific regulations and prevent
rejection on arrival.

PHYTOPHTHORA ACTION
Across the region, we are monitoring
the occurrence of phytophthora, a
disease that causes blight in potato
and tomato crops. To help monitor the
disease, and pinpoint its progress, we
are taking samples in the fields, from
different regions, and using the results
to map the disease’s distribution.
TRAINING FOCUS
Training our staff is at the heart of what
we do, but our recent focus has been on
sharing expertise with our clients. Last
month we held a two-day conference
for our customers to look at the issues
and/or problems that can arise with
contractual specifications, and how to
remedy them.
With a focus on international markets,
including China, we shared our own
statistical data to highlight the issues
and help attendees clearly identify
the subjects to concentrate on. We
also reviewed the issues surrounding
mycotoxins and dioxins in Ukraine, what
causes contamination, and how to avoid
it.
SGS Ukraine was joined by 27 clients for
one day of theoretical presentations and
for a second day to visit our laboratories.

services to clients, SGS is investing in
new capabilities, extra capacity and new
offices across Russia.
VOLGA EXPANSION
YEISK TEAM
In July, in response to increased
demand, SGS opened two new
execution offices, at Saratov and
Nizhnekamsk, to service Russia’s
Volga region, a key grain and oilseed
producing area. Extending to more than
1 million square kilometres, the Volga
region has traditionally been served by
our offices at Volgograd, supported by
our team at Samara. The new offices
are strategically located 500km and
1,000km respectively from Volgograd
to extend our reach and deliver more
effective, timely services to clients
across the region.

With increasing demand for
mycotoxins testing, from clients and
their destination markets, we have
decided to expand our capabilities. On
average, Rostov handles more than
100 samples for mycotoxins testing
every month. From July, we will offer
Liquid Chromatograph (LC) testing
for the presence of mycotoxins, on all
commodities, in our Rostov laboratory.
We have been conducting
mycotoxin tests for six months,
using immunological methods. This
investment in LC equipment and the
recruitment of personnel to deliver the
service will make our testing capabilities
more efficient and useful.
In addition, turn around times will
drop as we will operate seven days a
week, and samples will remain on site
at Rostov, saving time on delivery and
collection.
