Fourth of July sidewalk parade

It’s time for a sidewalk
parade! Whether it’s on
the Fourth of July, or
anytime all summer long,
decorate bikes, trikes,
scooters, skates and wagons, wear a funny hat
and strike up the band. A
couple of families with a
few motivated kids is really all it takes to make it
happen. Gather kids of
all ages in your neighborhood, and get marching
to the beat of family fun
and memory making.
Here are some ideas to
stage the informal, high
spirited event:
• Make and deliver fliers
or send e-mails to announce the sidewalk parade. Designate a place
where kids can gather for a
pre-parade decorating party. Your deck, driveway,
backyard or a local park
can be the gathering spot.
Tie ribbons, streamers and
flags to bikes and wagons.
Make signs and banners.
• Put your child’s teddy
bear or other stuffed animals on parade, too. Dec-
orate the long sides of a
wagon to make it look like
a circus wagon. Fill it
with their favorite animals. Some kids might
like to dress like a clown,
while others can be a circus
ringmaster
or
tightrope walker.
• Teens may enjoy participating, too. They can
hand out brochures along
the mini parade route or
wear a sandwich board
advertising their services
for
mowing
lawns,
babysitting or watering
plants for vacationers.
• For post-parade fun,
make the day a real picnic and top off the event
with snacks, appetizers, a
potluck meal or a barbecue. For dessert, set out
tubs of ice cream on a
ter balloon volleyball and
relay races. Some kids
may want to perform impromptu juggling acts,
magic shows and songs.

The Herkimer County
Fair is being held on
Aug. 18-23 and is seeking contestants for this
year’s events including
the Queen Pageants, Talent Show, and Demo
Derby. The Demo Derby
is being held on Friday,
Aug. 21. Drivers must be
at least 18 years old. The
Queen Pageants are being held Aug. 18 with
girls of different age
groups from 4-17 and
boys from 4-12.
The Talent Show is being held Aug. 22 with
any age or talent. The
Talent show is a pre-lim
for the New York State
Fair. It is necessary to
perform at a county fair
before entering the State
Fair competition. First
place awards $50 and a
trophy, 2nd place is $25
and a trophy and 3rd is
$15 and a trophy. The
contestants are judged
in six divisions and registration is due Aug. 18.

Preventing mildew other July gardening tips

Weeds really do sprout
overnight and by next
week they’ll be towering
over your tomatoes and
annual flowers. A visit to
the garden before work,
or as soon as you get
home, can keep the
weeds in check.
Continue planting vegetables such as radishes,
carrots, and lettuce so
that you’ll have a continual supply of these vegetables into the fall.
Seeds will germinate
quickly in warm soils, but
so will the weeds. Be diligent about weeding, watering, and thinning your
new seedlings.
Check tomato plants
for large, green-striped
horned caterpillars. A few
can cause lots of damage,
so hand pick and destroy
them when found. Spray
an organic pesticide containing B.t. (Bacillus
thuringiensis) to control
large infestations. If the
caterpillars have white

Preventing
powdery
mildew,
renovating
strawberry beds, and
protecting
blueberries
from birds, are some of
the gardening activities
for this month.
At the first sign of powdery mildew on phlox,
bee balm, and other susceptible plants, treat with
Serenade or other labeled
fungicide, such as one
with potassium bicarbonate (relative of baking
soda). Spray plants every
two weeks, or according
to label directions if different, thoroughly wetting the foliage.
Now’s the time when
strawberry beds can become a mass of baby
plants. Renovate the
beds, controlling the runners, encouraging them
to root where you want
them. Keep the bed well
mulched and watered.
Birds love blueberries
as much as we do, so protect the fruit with netting.
Use stakes to suspend
the netting over the
shrub so birds won’t
reach the berries. Secure
the netting to the ground
to prevent birds from
sneaking in. Get your
cover in place before the
berries turn ripe.

BLT Cracker Spread
Here is an unusual but delicious way to enjoy a BLT
without the guilt of a fattening spread.
Grilled melon is a great way to add some fruit to a
backyard grilling party!
• 3 cups melon chunks (cantaloupe, honeydew or
watermelon)
• 2 teaspoons oil
• 1/8 teaspoon salt
• 1/8 teaspoon pepper
• 3 slices cooked bacon, crumbled
• 4 basil leaves, thinly sliced
1. Prepare grill for direct grilling on medium-high.
2. Thread chunks onto skewers. Brush skewers with
oil; sprinkle with salt and pepper.
3. Grill 3 minutes, turning over once. Top with
crumbled bacon and basil. Serves 4.

Summer Peach Salad
I don’t think I have ever tasted anything so refreshing as this summer side dish.
• 1 cup water
• 4 cups (8 medium) peeled and chopped fresh peaches
• 1 (4 serving) package sugar free vanilla cook and
serve pudding mix
• 1 (4 serving) package sugar free lemon gelatin
• 1 cup mini marshmallows
• 1 cup reduced calorie whipped topping
1. In a blender container, combine water and 1 cup
chopped peaches. Cover and process on BLEND for 20
seconds or until mixture is smooth.
2. In a medium saucepan, combine dry pudding
mix, dry gelatin and blended peach mixture. Cook
over medium heat until mixture thickens and starts to
boil, stirring often. Remove from heat. Add marshmallows. Mix gently until marshmallows are dissolved.
3. Fold in remaining 3 cups chopped peaches.
Spread mixture into an 8x8-inch dish. Refrigerate until firm, about 3 hours. Spread whipped topping evenly over top. Cut into 8 servings.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Jeb Bush
and Senator Marco Rubio are solidifying their positions at the front of the pack of Republican presidential contenders. However, in a separate
Journal/NBC News poll, 65 percent said they could
see themselves backing Mike Huckabee.
Grandpa said, “Sonny, it was so cold last night I
couldn’t sleep. I shivered all night long.” “Grandpa,
did that noise I heard come from your teeth chattering?” “I don’t know, Sonny. We don’t sleep
together anymore.”
While the presidential hopeful show will not end
until the fat lady sings, other hopeful candidates
still have strong support and financial backing.
Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky is a favorite of a
friend of mine and he is definitely still in the race.
The pastor of a local farm community church
asked one of the deacons to lead the church family
in prayer. Later he said, “Deacon, your voice was so
low, I couldn’t hear your prayer.” “I wasn’t praying
to you,” the deacon replied.
While the candidates running for president all
appear to be great, one of them still will need your
vote. It has been said, “If you don’t vote for the one
you want, you are actually giving your vote to the
other guy.”
It has been well documented that our government
grows at a rate of 6 percent per year which means
it will increase its spending by 6 percent and
increase taxes by at least 6 percent plus borrowing
billions of interest bearing dollars. How much more
are you willing to pay each year – for the remainder
of your life and stick your children with?
Is the problem this little boy faced the one that
could destroy our nation?
A little boy versed in the Christian faith wanted
$100 to buy an electrical KitchenAid for his mother. After several nights of prayer, he decided to write
a letter to God.
Have you ever wondered what makes someone
tick? If you could dig down deep, what would you
find? Let’s take two well-known names and see
what we come up with.
A good democrat postal department employee
saw the political ramifications and sent the letter
on to the president. In a moment of good-natured
political planning, the president said, “Let’s send
that lad $10.00. You put in $5.00 and I will put in
the other $5.00.”
For starters, let’s ask ourselves what do we actually know about the man who is the president of the
United States, Barack Obama? What makes him
tick?
I have been trying to remember if I have ever seen
a picture of him entering or exiting a church. If you
have, what does that mean to you? If you can’t
recall any church-related activity, what does that
suggest? Possibly to you, it would not suggest or
indicate anything or possibly it would cause substantial doubts. George Washington said no one
could possibly govern this country without the help
of God.
On a few occasions, President Obama said that if
he could not have his own way, he would go around
Congress. What does that say about him? Should a
man be president when he is willing to state that he
will bypass our nations’ time and constitutionally
honored government system of one president with
Senators and House Representatives?
Does that indicate a man who would chose personal-dictorial leadership over the managerial
foundation our forefathers designed for our country?
The second person, Mrs. Clinton, has been associated with government for more years than our
president. I will merely repeat what we chatted
about in the previous Hello Again. Hillary Clinton
said – “No jobs were ever created by businesses.” I
guess she was implying that all jobs were created
by government. What does that statement suggest
concerning her ability to think without talking? I
will ask you to draw your own conclusion.
After reading the following statement, how anxious will you be to vote for a believer in big government?
“The greater the government, the greater the

“The larger the government grows, the more taxes
it will collect from you.” — Hello Again
The question: who will become our next president?
When the boy received and opened the envelope
and found the $10.00, he was amazed. He quickly
wrote another letter to God, thanking God for the
$10.00 given. The letter said, “Thank you Heavenly
Father but your letter was routed through
Washington and they took their 90 percent cut.”
To answer the problem faced by our little boy, will
anyone be able to actually run our government if
the politicians have already spent more money than
taxation will bring in?
I’m sitting near the front plate glass window in
our office. The little red bike is sitting with a hopeful look. The sun is shining with beautiful white
clouds and no wind. So what would you expect me
to say? You’re right. Wave with both hands when we
ramble by. We will wave back with one.
God bless you and if you put your trust in Him,
all will be well.

Family fun filled Fourth of July

The Fourth is never an
ordinary summer day, especially when you turn
the occasion into a celebration of outdoor family
fun. Here are some creative ideas for all ages,
starting with a fantastic
“fireworks of art” activity.
Fireworks art
In a small bowl or recycled container, stir together 4 tablespoons of liquid
tempera paint and about
1 tablespoon of water to
dilute the paint. It should
be runny. Make several
different color mixtures.
Gather around a picnic
table and give each person
a sheet of sturdy construction or watercolor paper
and a drinking straw. Pour
a spoonful of one color
near the center of each
sheet, tell everyone to hold
their straw just above the
puddle of paint at a 45 degree angle and blow
through it, spreading the
color in all directions like a
fireworks display.
One by one, pour other
colors of paint on the paper and blow through the
straw to create a dramatic design.
To turn your picture
into a place mat, cover
the completed and dried
project with clear, adhesive-backed plastic.
Tip: If you wish to
sprinkle sequins and glitter on the design for
added sparkle, stir 1 teaspoon white craft glue
into the original paint
and water mixture. Add
more water if necessary
for a runny consistency.
Patriotic stones
Collect several large
rocks with a flat side.
Rinse off rocks if needed,
and let dry thoroughly.

Have a song fest and
sing familiar American
songs together, such as

Grilled Buttermilk Chicken
Here in Texas, we celebrate two holidays that commemorate freedom. June 19 (also known as Juneteenth) is the day slaves in Texas received the declaration of their emancipation from slavery. July 4 is the
celebration of the hard fought freedom and privileges
we enjoy as Americans.
But Independence Day was almost celebrated two
days earlier. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence, and two days later, July 4, the delegates signed the Declaration of Independence. Future presidents Thomas Jefferson and
John Adams fought to have July 2 as Independence
Day, but were outvoted by the other delegates. This is
why we celebrate on July 4, the date the document
was signed, rather than the date the resolution of independence was approved by Congress.
Like many American families, we enjoy celebrating
Independence Day by gathering together for barbeques and fireworks. These recipes for Grilled Buttermilk Chicken and Grilled Potato Salad with Buttermilk Dressing are guaranteed to set off an explosion of
flavor in your mouth while providing you the freedom
of time to enjoy this wonderful holiday.
Marinating chicken in buttermilk and hot sauce is
an old Southern recipe for tenderizing and adding flavor to chicken. If you don’t have buttermilk on hand,
see the tips below for creating a tasty alternative.
When grilling, create two heat zones: start with high,
direct heat over the coals, and then move the food
away from the coals to cook all the way through without burning.
• 1-1/2 cups buttermilk, shaken well
• 8 cloves garlic, chopped
• 1 tablespoon paprika
• 2 tablespoons poultry seasoning
• 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
• 1 teaspoon black pepper
• 2 tablespoons hot sauce
• 6 pounds bone-in chicken pieces
1. In a small bowl or measuring cup, combine buttermilk, garlic, paprika, poultry seasoning, salt, pepper and hot sauce.
2. Divide buttermilk mixture and chicken between
two large resealable plastic bags. Place the bags of
chicken in a bowl or on a sheet pan. Marinate chicken in the refrigerator, turning bags occasionally, for at
least 1 hour and up to overnight.
3. Heat grill to medium-low. Remove chicken from
marinade (discard marinade); pat chicken dry with
food safe paper towels. Grill chicken, covered, turning
occasionally, until cooked through, 30 to 40 minutes.
Serves 8.

Grilled Potato Salad
• 1-1/2 pounds red potatoes, cut into 2-inch pieces
• 1 red onion, cut into 1/2-inch thick rings
• 4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
• 2 bell peppers (red and green), seeded and cut in half
• 4 celery stalks, leaves and white stalk removed
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 1-1/2 teaspoons ground black pepper
1. Heat grill to medium. Toss potatoes, onion and 2
tablespoons oil in a bowl. Arrange in single layer on
grill and cook, turning frequently, until tender and
slightly charred, about 15 minutes. Dice onions, bell
peppers and celery and mix with the potatoes, salt and
pepper.
2. Add 1/2 cup of Buttermilk Dressing (see recipe
below) to potato mixture and toss to coat. Add additional dressing as desired. Serve warm or at room
temperature. Serves 4.
Buttermilk Dressing
• 1/2 cup plain, low fat Greek Yogurt
• 1/4 cup low fat mayonnaise
• 1/3 cup buttermilk
• 3 tablespoons coarse grained mustard
• 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
• 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
• 2 teaspoons sherry wine vinegar
• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley or basil
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
Mix all of the ingredients in a medium bowl until
blended. Refrigerate dressing until ready to use.
Makes 1-1/4 cups.
Tip: Buttermilk Substitutes
Milk: Combine 1 cup milk (2 percent whole, or
heavy cream) and 1 tablespoon lemon juice or white
vinegar. Let mixture stand at room temperature for 510 minutes. The milk will be thicken slightly, but not
as much as buttermilk, and contain small curdled
bits.
Yogurt: Mix 3/4 cup plain yogurt with 1/4 cup water.
Sour Cream: Mix 3/4 cup sour cream with 1/4 cup
water.
Cream of Tartar: Mix 1
cup of milk with 1-3/4
teaspoons cream of tartar. Let stand 5-10 minutes until slightly thickened and curdled.

Gem’s Along the Mohawk hosts Rock the Canal

Gems Along the Mohawk is a regional tourist
attraction in Herkimer
(right along the Erie Canal)
that provides canal cruises, dining, and shopping.
Renee Scialdo Shevat,
president of Gems Along
the Mohawk, said the
business opened in 2002
and it is still running
successfully today. The
company features 70
businesses in Central
New York, according to
their website.
Shevat said she and the
associated
businesses
wanted to host an event
that would kickoff the
summer season and attract more tourists who
live outside Central New
York and New York State.
“When our business
was pulled together,” she
said, “we said why not try
to set up something at a
more annual basis that
would be a little closer to-
ward opening up the
summer to say to people,
‘welcome to summer’ of
that particular year.
‘Here’s what you can do
