Great resource with practical tips. Child Discipline: To Punish or Not by Dr. Jane Nelsen What do you think of when you hear the word “discipline”? Most people think of punishment. I invite you to think a little deeper starting with the exploration of the long-term results of punishment. When children are punished they do not learn self-discipline. Punishment provides “external” motivation. Self-discipline requires “inner” motivation. When children are punished they either comply to avoid the punishment (and may become approval junkies), or they may get sneaky and do all they can to avoid getting caught. They may they blatantly rebel—resulting in endless power-struggles with their parents. Then parents complain about the behavior of their children without taking responsibility for their part—how they invited the power struggles by using ineffective discipline methods (punishment). Positive Discipline does not advocate any form of punishment—no punitive time-out or grounding, no withdrawal of privileges, no yelling, no lectures, no threatening, no spanking, no rewards, no praise. At this point you may be wondering two things, “What else is there?”, and, “Wait a minute; praise and rewards aren’t punishment.” Praise and rewards are not punishment but they are external motivators, which do not teach self-discipline, self-control, and the desire to make a contribution based on inner motivation. In answer to what else is there; that is what Positive Discipline is all about—providing many non-punitive parenting tools that follow two basic guidelines: 1) Create a connection before correction, 2) Correction usually involves children in focusing on solutions. A few strategies are: Family Meetings: where children learn to give and receive compliments and to brainstorm for solutions to family challenges that have been put on the agenda. Curiosity Questions: where parents invite children to think instead of telling them what to think. Validating Feelings: to help children feel supported without needing to be rescued or fixed. They learn they can survive the ups and downs of life. Positive Time-out: to help children learn self-soothing by creating a place that helps them feel better (so they can access their rational brains). Routine Charts: created by children so they feel motivated to follow the routines they have created (or at least helped create.) Most parents would prefer to give up punishment if they knew what else to do that would help their children develop into capable and caring adults. That is what Positive Discipline is all about. As the weather warms up, here are some simple ideas for your kids… ‘Paint’ with water — great for building hand and arm strength, which are important pre-writing skills. Depending on the age of your children, you could also talk about shapes, sizes and maybe even what ‘evaporation’ means. Use lots of words to describe what your children are doing as they are doing it to build their language skills. “Look at the circle you are painting on the pavement.” Introduce different items such as spray bottles, watering cans, and condiment bottles. Smoothies are all the rage because they are a simple (and delicious!) way to bump up your children’s daily intake of fruits and veggies. Here are a few kid-tested recipes: CHOCOLATE FROSTY TROPICAL SENSATION 1 1 1 1 3 cup ripe pineapple cup papaya mango cup coconut milk ice cubes GREEN GODDESS 2 avocados 1 handful spinach 1 banana 1 cup fresh pineapple 1 cup milk 3 ice cubes 1 cup milk 1 frozen banana 1 tbsp cacao powder 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 3 ice cubes A little honey, Stevia, or maple syrup to sweeten How to reach me? The Hazelton’s Make’N’Take “Dress up Doll Felt” & “Finger puppets 5 little monkeys” Is being planned for May 21, 2014 @ 5:30pm Please call if you are going to attend. No calls = no make’n’take! For example: - Types of colanders - A cream (tea) dispenser, - A fish and a clover gelatin mold - Part of a broiler - A drying rack - A bell - A pot lid Drum sticks could be a few strange shaped whisks, some interesting large spoons, and a potato masher. Loose parts can be kept in a clear plastic container. Outdoor Color Matching To create this game, gather a few simple materials: Outdoor craft paint in a variety of bright colors Several sizes of paint brushes Natural items for matching—you can use rocks, shells, and pinecones Flagstones or large flat rocks Paint each large stone one solid colour. Next, paint natural items with the same solid colors. The natural items can be matched with the large flat rock by being placed on top of the large rock. The temptation to lead, direct or solve problems can be great, but if we can control these impulses, children will learn much more and build confidence. ~Janet Lansbury The Hazelton’s Is your child 3 years old? When the popsicle stick is curved to your satisfaction, place it inside the rim of a glass or mug to dry. Let it dry thoroughly before handling. Once dry: let children paint, decorate with stickers or add ‘jewels’. Spray with clear acrylic spray to seal the paint. Have child wrap bracelet in home made wrapping paper and give to Mom. You Give a Mom a Muffin By Beth Brubaker If you give a Mom a muffin, She’ll want a cup of coffee to go with it. She’ll pour herself some. Her three year old will come and spill the coffee. Mom will wipe it up. Wiping the floor, she will find dirty socks. She’ll remember she has to do laundry. When she puts the laundry into the washer, she’ll trip over shoes and bump into the freezer. Bumping into the freezer will remind her she has to plan supper. She will get out a pound of hamburger. She’ll look for her cookbook (How to Make 101 Things with a Pound of Hamburger.) The cookbook is sitting under a pile of mail. She will see that the phone bill is due tomorrow. She will look for her checkbook. The checkbook is in her purse, which is being dumped out by her two year old. Then she’ll smell something funny. She’ll change the two year old. While she is changing the two year old, the phone will ring. Her five year old will answer and hang up. She’ll remember she was supposed to phone a friend to come over for coffee. Thinking of coffee will remind her that she was going to have a cup. She will pour herself some more. And chances are, If she has a cup of coffee, her kids will have eaten the muffin that went with it! Mini Treat Box You need: Card stock (assorted colors) Scissors, hole punch, Ribbon, Hershey’s Hugs or Kisses. Following the diagram shown at the right, cut out shape. Score fold lines.
