I
t has been an amazing year! We celebrated with an open house and ribbon cutting for our new emergency
shelter in September. In December, our residents moved and settled in two weeks before the Christmas holiday.
Some of the residents who made the move from the old shelter cried when they moved into their new rooms!
Their favorite thing is having access to privacy, and being in a facility that is safe and beautiful.
There are so many people to thank for this success! The American Society for Interior Design (ASID) and
the Interior Designers Coalition for Change (IDCF) helped make the rooms beautiful and functional. BJ
Construction donated and installed the kitchen cabinets. Groups and individuals hosted showers to help us
furnish and supply bedrooms and the kitchen. However, it was the investment from area foundations and
major donors that made the new shelter a reality. Below is a message from one of the capital campaign donors
on his reason for investing in Turning Point’s mission.
Upon my return from a yearlong sabbatical, I visited the shelter. I couldn’t believe the difference. Kids were
jumping with excitement getting ready for a trip to the Hands on Museum, staff was handling phone calls and
requests, and moms were cooking and getting breakfast ready. What was different was the atmosphere. There
was less tension and frenetic energy, and more positive energy! What a difference a building can make!
“What a difference you have made!”
Yours in Partnership,
Suzanne Coats
CEO & President
A Message from One of Our Major Donors
“I make capital contributions to organizations which do an
excellent job executing their mission and whose mission is
important for our community. Turning Point has met this standard
for many years; it is reassuring this organization now has the
capacity to fulfill their mission for many years to come.”

“Thank you for all of your help. I couldn’t have done it without you listening
to me and helping me get stronger. You made me feel safe, like family.”

Children’s Journal
hildren leaving shelter are offered the opportunity to leave messages for other children who come to shelter.
This journal is made available to new children during their first couple of days at shelter. As they read what others
have said, they learn that they are not alone in their experiences, as well as what to expect in the upcoming days.
“It’s ok to be scared, but you’ll make new friends. If you’re scared,
you shouldn’t be because there might be other kids who are scared, too.
It’s very safe here. It’s ok, it’s safe here.”

ast year, 5,987 youth in Macomb County
attended Turning Point’s Prevention Education
Program. Multi-session curriculums on dating
violence, sexual assault and harassment were presented.
All of Turning Point’s programs are evaluated and
our approach to prevention is evidence based.
Macomb Community Domestic Violence
Council (MCDVC)
T
he Macomb Community Domestic Violence Council
serves as a diverse, inclusive organization to promote
a culture of healthy, equitable relationships through
education, conversation and community building.
The program aims to increase participants’ knowledge
of the definition and dynamics of sexual assault. The
program also explores issues of consent, coercion, the
law, resources, and ways to help a friend in need through
age appropriate activities, role play, and discussion.
The Domestic Violence Peer Ambassador Project
(DVPA) has just started its fifth year and has trained
over 200 ambassadors. The DVPA is a partnership
between Macomb Community College and the
MCDVC. The Project seeks to increase the knowledge
base of natural helpers in the community so that they
are able to provide accurate information and support
to their peers who disclose.
The following chart shows significant gains in youth’s
knowledge after the intervention.

projects, please visit www.mcdvc.org

Community Advocacy Program (CAP)
T
he Community Advocacy Program (CAP) pairs a
family with a highly trained advocate who focuses
on assisting the survivor to meet their self-defined
goals. CAP is an opportunity for families who are
leaving shelter and recovering from a severe crisis to
continue to receive case management and advocacy
services in their own environment, within their
timeframe, and driven by what they say they need.
“They came to my house and
listened to what resources
I needed and brought me
information that we discussed.”
In 2013, 28 families benefited from the program
receiving ongoing advocacy and support 4-6 hours
per week for 12 weeks. We thank the Charter One
Foundation and the Shelby Community Foundation
for their generous support of the CAP program.

uring April, Turning Point focuses on raising
awareness about the impact of sexual assault and
how we can work together to prevent sexual violence.
In 2013, we brought sexual assault awareness to the
community by hosting a number of local events and
workshops, displayed our Jane Doe quilts at numerous
public facilities, and distributed over 3,230 teal
ribbons and information cards to the community and
presented facts and information about sexual assault
to city councils.
ctober is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Purple ribbons were worn by people in the
community and many attended events to raise awareness
and support prevention.

T
he statement 2013. Turning Point’s capital campaign of $3,000,000 to build a new emergency shelter
is nearly complete, but due to added construction costs we have an additional $400,000 to raise.
Volunteers continue to be a major reason that we have come so far. Last year, they donated 17,818 hours,
valued at $ 267,000.
With continued efficient management, at least $.86 of every donated dollar is for program expenses. The
remaining 14% goes toward administration and fundraising expenses. This is well below the recommended
industry standard of 19% for nonprofits.
Our A-133 audit performed by Baker Tilly shows a 7% drop in donations for 2013 which can mostly be
associated with the capital campaign. Striving to keep our services available to families in crisis remains to
be our major goal.
I continue to be awed by the support from this community through donations, fundraising initiatives and
volunteer assistance. It is through the generous spirit of this community and its commitment to Turning
Point’s mission that we are able to meet the needs of so many hurt by violence.
Sincerely,
Sachin Varma

Mission
T
urning Point’s mission is to provide programs and resources that enable victims/survivors of domestic
violence and sexual assault to regain control of their lives.
Our philosophy is to work toward ending the use of violence as a means of oppressing and controlling
others, and endorses the concept of helping people assume power over their lives.
Turning Point serves the community by educating about the dynamics of domestic violence and sexual
assault, and as a voice advocating for the people we serve.
Turning Point is dedicated to the development and promotion of model programs that address the root
causes of violence, and to the enhancement of the quality of life for present and future generations.
