Health and Safety
Hygiene and safety
Maintain a high level of personal hygiene, wash hands or wear gloves and ensure all work surfaces are clean. Use spoons not fingers when handling ingredients.
Keep the equipment you use for making skin care products separate to those you use for cooking. Take care when using the stove and cooker and when mel<ng buYer and hea<ng oils. Shelf life and Storage
Dry or Oil based (anhydrous) products will have a shelf life of around 6 months without needing to add any preserva<ves. This includes oils based bath melts, bath bombs, bath soaks etc.
Keep products away from water (un<l you are ready to use them). Avoid ge_ng water into oil based products both while making them and using them. Store products and ingredients away from heat and sunlight and out of the way of children and pets.
Natural cosme<cs can become contaminated so get rid of any product if it starts to look or smell different. Essen8al Oils
See the informa<on sheet on Essen<al Oils at the end of the eKit for more informa<on.
• Avoid direct contact with the skin and always dilute before use. • When using essen<al oils always check the contraindica<ons and abide by the safety advice for using essen<al oils.
• Essen<al Oils drop out of their boYles at different rates (some very fast, other very slowly). Take care when using them.
Patch tes8ng
Always carry out a patch test before using a new essen<al oil. Dilute one drop of essen<al oil in 5 ml carrier oil and apply a liYle to the inside of your elbow and wait 24 hours to check for any reac<on.
Ingredients
Always check with the supplier of your ingredients for any special advice about their safe use and storage.
Take care when using these products in the bath as they may make the bath slippery!

Bath Melts
Bath melts are easy to make and wonderful to use! They are a mixture of buYers and oils which are poured into moulds to set firm. As the bath melt needs to set and stay firm at room temperature they need to contain a hard buYer such as cocoa buYer combined with other buYers or oils.
To use them simply pop one in a warm bath. The buYers will melt on contact with warm water and acer bathing you’ll be lec with with really soc silky skin! They can also make the bath slippery so be careful when ge_ng out.
There are many ingredients you can use
BuCers:
Shea BuYer
Cocoa BuYer
Coconut BuYer (also called Coconut Oil)
Avocado BuYer
Mango BuYer
Olive BuYer
Oils:
Sweet Almond
Sunflower
Peach/Apricot Kernal
Avocado
Refined vs cold pressed buCers
Cold pressed oils and buYers are usually preferable over more refined versions as they retain more of their natural nutrients and essen<al faYy acids. I tend to use mostly cold pressed buYers with the excep<on of Shea BuYer. With Shea BuYer I choose a filtered or refined version as otherwise it is prone to going rancid very quickly. Deodorised buCers
Shea BuYer and Cocoa BuYer have quite a strong smell so many suppliers sell deodorised versions of them. What you prefer to use is personal choice. I really like the smell of cocoa buYer so I like to use the regular version, however as Shea BuYer has a stronger smell which I’m not so keen on, I tend to use a deodorised version. Experiment and see what works for you!
Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, in a box or tuppaware container with a lid to keep them fresh.
Shelf life: These bath melts are best used within 6 months. ©Gail Francombe 2013!

How to Make Bath Melts
The method is very simple. All the ingredients except the essen<al oils are melted together in a bain-‐marie over a medium heat. Its best to melt the harder ingredients with a higher mel<ng point first (e.g cocoa buYer) then add socer ingredients with a lower mel<ng point (shea buYer, base oils). This prevents overhea<ng ingredients. Then the mixture is removed from the heat and the essen<al oils are added. S<r the mixture and pour into moulds to set -‐ silicone moulds are the easiest to work with and ice cube moulds and cake moulds work well! It’s important not to let any drops of water from the bain-‐marie get into the product. Pop into the fridge to let the melts set and harden. This will take several hours.

Bath Bombs
Bath bombs are made mostly of dry ingredients (bicarbonate of soda and citric acid). They soothe and socen the bath water and the skin without making it oily. They are very different to bath melts which have a oily consistency once added to the water as the buYers they are made from melt and turn liquid when warm. Bath Bombs are skin socening, Bath Melts are more moisturising.
Ingredients found in Bath Bombs
Bicarbonate of Soda (also known as baking soda). Has skin socening and soothing proper<es. Having a bath with bicarb is a tradi<onal remedy for chicken pox because it soothes itchy skin.
Citric Acid -‐ the reac<on between citric acid and bicarb is what causes the fizz!
Witch hazel/ Vegetable Oil -‐ The dry ingredients need something to hold them together. Tradi<onally the mixture is spritzed with witch hazel un<l it is the consistency of damp sand, then packed into moulds. This can be quite tricky to get right. Too much witch hazel and the mixture fizzes up! I have found using a vegetable oil such as sweet almond or sunflower can give a more reliable finish. Some recipes below use witch hazel and some vegetable oil. Try a few and see which you prefer.
Essen8al oils -‐ for fragrance and therapeu<c proper<es
Colouring -‐ for colour! Check with your supplier what they recommend for bath bombs. You can get powdered or liquid colouring. The one I have is liquid. Always start off with a very small amount! Decora8ons -‐ Small dried rose buds, dried lavender, dried marigold petals, cosme<c gliYer, sugar crac flowers etc Storage: Store in a cool, dry place, in a box or tuppaware container with a lid to keep them fresh and dust free.
Shelf life: These bath bombs are best used within 3-‐6 months. ©Gail Francombe 2013!

How to Make Bath Bombs As men<oned above there are two slightly different ways to make bath bombs, one using witch hazel to hold the ingredients together and one using a vegetable oil (such as sweet almond or sunflower oil).
Here are two tutorials, taking you step by step through the process!
A note on moulds: Round bath bombs are the most tricky to make so I suggest you start off with something simple to begin with. Cup cake cases work well as do silicone moulds. Once you’ve had some prac<ce at ge_ng the consistency right move onto round bath bombs. All the recipes in this sec<on can be made in any type of mould.

How to make Bath Bombs with Vegetable Oil
1) Mix all the dry ingredients together. You may wish to put them through a sieve to make sure there are no lumps. 2) Add your drops of essen<al and mix in well. 3) Add your colouring if using and quickly mix in (it will make the mixture start to fizz!). Add a liYle at a <me. The best way to mix in the colouring is to rub the mixture between your thumb and fingers (wearing gloves).
Add a pinch or two of dried petals and/
or 1/4 teaspoon cosme<c gliYer if you wish.

4)Drizzle the vegetable oil in a liYle at a <me.
5) Mix well -‐ you can use a spoon or your hands (it’s advisable to wear gloves to protect your skin). When the mixture resembles damp sand and it holds its shape when you squeeze it together, you know it is ready. 6) Quickly pack the mixture very firmly into cake cakes, ice cube trays or silicone molds. Here I’ve laid dried rose petals in the boYom of the moulds.
7) Allow the bath bombs to air dry for 12 hours or so un<l they are firm.
8) Carefully remove the bath bombs from the moulds.
Pop one in the bath and relax!

Bath Creamers & Truffles
Bath creamers and truffles are a cross between a bath melt and bath bomb! Instead of using vegetable oil or witch hazel they use luxurious cocoa buYer or shea buYer to hold them together. These are beau<ful in the bath as the buYers are very moisturising for the skin without leaving the bath too oily.

1) Melt the shea buYer or coca buYer gently over a bain-‐marie. Allow to cool slightly.

3) Slowly drizzle the melted buYer in a liYle at a <me, and mix well. You want the mixture to s<ck together when you squeeze it. 4) Pack firmly into a mould -‐ silicone moulds, ice cube trays or cake cases work well. You can add a few flower petals to the boYom the mould so that when you turn them out the petals are on the top of the bath creamer/ truffle. Alterna<vely, if you are using cake cases you can place a rose bud or other petals onto the top.
5) Put in the fridge and allow to harden (about 1.5 hrs)
6) To use -‐ run a warm bath and pop one in just before you get in. Relax and enjoy!
