Annual Report - Durham Region Police Service
DURHAM REGIONAL POLICE SERVICE AUXILIARY UNIT 2012 Annual Report Celebrating 35 Years as Proud Leaders In Community Service For over 35 years, the Durham Regional Police Service Auxiliary Unit has provided volunteer community service to the citizens of the Durham Region. Inspector Charlie Green Auxiliary Liaison Officer I would like to congratulate all members of the Auxiliary Unit for another very successful and busy year. For the first time in the history of the Unit we surpassed 200 events in one year. A total of 209 events were completed. The Chief has authorized the Unit strength to be increased to 90 members to reflect ten percent of sworn strength. The Chief’s inspection and graduation parade was held on February 17th and we added nineteen (19) new auxiliary constables to the Unit. The parade was held at the Col. R.S. McLaughlin Armoury and numerous GTA Police Services attended as well as family and friends. This year was the Diamond Jubilee for Her Majesty, The Queen and four (4) members of the Unit were recipients of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal. The medal is awarded for duty and service. Auxiliary Inspector Elborn and Auxiliary Sergeant Buller were awarded their medal at the Service Awards in September. Auxiliary Constable Everingham was awarded her medal through her employer. Auxiliary Constable Spratley was awarded his medal through the Canadian Forces, Ontario Regiment (RCAC). Congratulations, you have made us all proud. The Unit contributed almost 18,000 hours of volunteer time to the Durham Regional Police Service and the Region. The Unit must qualify each year in Use of Force and I would be remiss if I did not thank the Use of Force instructors for their professionalism and hard work in ensuring that our Auxiliary Unit receives training that is second to none. We saw twelve (12) new recruits start their training with the expectation of commencing their duties by Canada Day of 2013. Throughout the year I have received numerous comments from officers throughout the Service complementing the auxiliary officers on the excellent job that they do. The frontline officers realize the importance of the Unit and the invaluable assistance they provide to the Durham Regional Police and the citizens of Durham. Our NCO cadre works so very hard throughout the year under the leadership of Auxiliary Inspector Louise Elborn and I thank them for their professionalism and dedication to the DRPS. Our annual appreciation dinner and “Auxiliary Officer of the Year” was held at Deer Creek and Auxiliary Constable Tracy Matusiak #2154 was Auxiliary Officer of the Year. Congratulations Tracy. The Auxiliary Constables perform their duties very well and are a credit to themselves, the Unit and the Durham Regional Police. Chief Constable Mike Ewles provides continued support to the Unit. We thank the Chief and Superintendent Mills for their guidance and assistance. I join Sgt Kate Harrison and Constable Al Ouellette in thanking our auxiliary officers for their selfless contribution to the DRPS and the citizens of our Region. Thank You! After serving only a couple of years, Sharon passed away and the members felt that something should be done in her memory. With approval of Chief Jon Jenkins, the award was made. This plaque is awarded to the recipient not only because he or she may have put in the most hours over the year, but we look for such characteristics as reliability, a strong commitment to serving the Durham Region, a positive and professional image at all times, enthusiasm, a strong team player, confidence in performing any type of duty assigned, good mentoring, etc. 2012 Auxiliary Officer of the Year Auxiliary Constable Tracy Matusiak Auxiliary Constable Tracy Matusiak joined the Auxiliary Unit in 2007. Since her enlistment, Tracy has exceeded well over the minimum required 144 hours per year and has always received an excellent performance evaluation. In 2012, Tracy had performed an impressive 234.5 hours and assisted with 30 events throughout our region. Tracy has a spirited personality, is very reliable, compliant, hard working, and her demeanor is professional at all times. She quietly goes about her duties at every event, most times showing up early to offer assistance to the Auxiliary sergeant(s) in charge of the event, and is always willing to go the extra mile. As a senior constable, Auxiliary Matusiak has organized and ran events in the absence of the divisional Auxiliary Sergeants. Tracy is a great role model for not only the Unit, but especially for the new members as an excellent mentoring officer. Congratulations Tracy on receiving this award, it is well deserved. We are very fortunate to have both assigned to Central West as their combined experience and leadership is second to none! One of our Town Councillors at the parade also asked me to pass along their thanks and appreciation for the hard work and dedication performed by our Auxiliary members. Again, thank you to both Bob and Bob- and your team- for doing an excellent job! Ron Kapuscinski Central West CRU Sergeant ****** Just wanted to send you folks a quick message to thank you for helping out at Remembrance Day and especially for assisting 151 Sqn of the Royal Canadian Air Cadets. The march down the street was well received and for many cadets, was a once in a lifetime opportunity considering the weather and the fact it was on a Sunday. I had many compliments from citizens who were very impressed with the Police presence and the professionalism of your officers. Thanks again…..please let your officers know how much we appreciated their support that day. Bert Weigel Central East CIB ****** On Friday night Port Perry had the BIA Christmas tree lighting ceremony in town and four auxiliary officers attended to assist. The officers were Dale Symons, Terry Williamson, Dave Chambers and Tammy Coles. During the event an eleven year old took off from group home workers with the Myrtle Group home who had a bunch of kids at the event. Dale Symons called me immediately on private and explained the situation. He made his way to the other Aux officers and the group home staff and began to get some information while myself and PC Mullen and PC Gibbs attended. This turned into a larger search due to the Search Urgency numbers and officers from around the region and Air1 and Canine attended. The male was located safe and sound a couple hours after he initially went missing. My thanks and praise to these officers, who without having to be asked or prompted, asked my permission to remain in the area and assist with the search. They began to check areas in town I did not yet have manpower for and were a great asset. I just wanted to let you know that it was appreciated and they did a great job. Sgt Dave Loughlin North Division Letters of Appreciation I just wanted to take the time to thank you all for your help in making this year’s event (Chief For A Day) a great one for the kids. It’s always a lot of fun but it couldn’t happen without everyone’s assistance and we appreciate it. Jason, please pass along my thanks to Eileen and Alan. Thanks again and have a good day. Susan Gibbs Corporate Communications ****** Thank you Terry and your platoon for your services yesterday as part of our 5th Annual RUN AJAX Waterfront Half Marathon & 5K event! From initial comments everything went very well - we appreciate your time and commitment to our event. We are looking forward to next year - Sunday September 22, 2013! Kevin Smith Active Living Coordinator, Town of Ajax ****** Thanks to you Jason and your team of auxiliary officers for keeping both packs of riders safe on the trip from Don Mills to Whitby (“Their Opportunity”). Thanks also to Chris and James for participating in the ride and to Janine for attending the closing ceremony in Whitby! Geneva and Jill, the young women who are just over half-way across the country enjoyed having some company and I am sure the reception they got in Toronto and Durham will help them on their way and raise awareness of the needs of young people who need funding to play sports!
