October 5, 2013 We pulled out of The Fishing Center, Rudee Inlet in Virginia Beach aboard the ‘Salt Treated’ at about 7:30 am, with the sun already rising enough to hint at the unseasonably warm October day forecast for Hampton Roads. My buddy Captain Zack Hoffman, Jon Kurowski, and I caught up on the latest fishing reports and other fishing chatter as we rounded Cape Henry and headed for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. The plan for the day was to enjoy some serious fall red drum action, and that we did! I was surprised there was no one around on such a gorgeous morning. We anchored and put out rods with offerings of cut bait. Within minutes, the first rod was hit. I could tell from the tell-tale head shake and aggressive runs, that we had a nice drum. Our first red drum was fat, and measured at 47-inches. High-fives! Rods back out. For the next hour or so, we took turns. As one person revived and released the reds, someone else was either fighting or netting the next fish. We had a few doubles and a few lost and missed fish, with 15 of 20 fish qualifying for state citations ranging between 45 to 52-inches. Our 5th bull of the day was a big one. His long runs peeled the drag on my spinner like a knife through butter. This beautiful red drum specimen was large enough to qualify for an All-Tackle Release World Record. What an awesome day! As we closed in on 11:00 am, the bigger fish had moved on, and we were barraged by a small army of puppy drum. We kept a few pups for the cooler, and called it a day. Where else in the world can you catch over a dozen huge red drum in less than two hours? I love our Virginia fisheries! See you on the water! Catch ‘em up!www.salttreatedfishing.com
