Bealtaine 2013 - Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane
Dublin City Council Presents
BEALTAINE 2013
Dublin City Arts Office
Dublin City Public Libraries
Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane
Lord Mayor of
Dublin’s Welcome
Bealtaine is the
Irish national arts
festival celebrating
creativity as we
age. It takes
place each May
countrywide and
involves thousands
of participants in
events in every
art form. Taking
its name from
the ancient Celtic
festival celebrating
springtime, Bealtaine celebrates renewal, creativity
and growth in ageing. Bealtaine is coordinated
by Age & Opportunity – the national organisation
working to promote greater participation by older
people in society and has been running since 1996.
The festival theme for 2013 is ‘Grow Happy’, inspired
by WB Yeats’ quote: “Happiness is neither virtue nor
pleasure nor this thing nor that but simply growth.
We are happy when we are growing.”
Dublin City Council’s Arts Office, Dublin City Public
Libraries and Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane
have produced a diverse and exciting programme
of events for Bealtaine, which includes art, dance,
music, film, theatre, literature, history and cultural
interests. This year’s programme features Dance
Across Dublin, a CoisCéim Broadreach performance
which tours to various city venues. Another highlight
of the festival not to be missed is a fantastic evening
of music and song at the Guinness Storehouse,
featuring renowned musician Paddy Cole.
It is the 100th anniversary of the 1913 Dublin Lockout
so why not visit Digging The Monto, an exhibition
of photographs documenting tenement life in
Dublin or attend a talk about the 1913 Lockout with
archaeologist Dr. Thomas Kador.
The LAB, Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane and
Dublin City Libraries have developed a fun family
drawing trail exploring the city’s buildings, for National
Drawing Day on the 18th May, so why not pick up a
worksheet from any of the venues and join the trail.
I hope you will enjoy this years’ Dublin City Council
Bealtaine programme and encourage you to get
involved. It is a great chance to discover a hidden
talent, explore your creative side and to share your
love of drawing, dancing, film, theatre or music.
Naoise Ó Muirí
Lord Mayor of Dublin
Bealtaine Ambassador
The longer I am associated
with the Bealtaine Festival
as ambassador, the more I
am convinced of it’s worth
and usefulness. Long may
it continue to encourage
older people to get involved
in creative activity of their
own choosing. This year’s
theme ‘Grow Happy’ sums
it up. When we are growing
we are happy, and while we are aging we do not
have to stop growing. Go for it!

Digging the Monto
Tenement archaeology and the
1913 Dublin Lockout
A photographic exhibition by Dr Thomas Kador in
association with Terry Fagan and Martin Coffey.
Women in the
Dublin Slums, 1901
History
The Dublin Lockout was a landmark event in Irish
history and set the scene for the struggle for Irish
independence. 1913 also saw the housing crisis
in Dublin’s infamous slums come to a head, with
the collapse of two tenement buildings on Church
Street. This exhibition explores daily life in one of the
capital’s poorest areas, known as the Monto, in the
early 20th century. It draws on the results of recent
archaeological excavations, several photographic
collections and historical census records. Following
the success of its inaugural exhibition at The Lab arts
centre, Digging the Monto will now tour to selected
Dublin City branch libraries from May to October. For
further information see www.dublincitypubliclibraries.ie
Supported by the Heritage Council, the North Inner
City Folklore Project, Dublin City Archives and the
Royal Society of Antiquaries. For more information on
the project please visit http://epoch.ie/Dublin1913
The exhibition will also be supported by a talk on life in
Dublin’s tenements and the 1913 Lockout in Charleville
Mall Library, by Dr. Thomas Kador, archaeologist and
director of the Cultural Learning Initiative.

A photographic exhibition of Dublin Street Traders
by Susan Weir.
Selling goods from prams has a long tradition in
Dublin. The unofficial Dublin anthem ‘Molly Malone’ is
a musical tribute to such a street trader. The traders
and their prams are part of what makes Dublin
special, and prams loaded with whatever consumers
will find tempting – fresh fruit, chocolate, flowers – are
quietly wheeled into position each day on Dublin’s
streets. The prams meanwhile have long since
abandoned their role as baby carriages, but have
found a new lease of life as picturesque mobile stalls.
Prompted by a fear that the traders and their prams
would disappear with ‘progress’, several years ago
Dubliner Susan Weir began photographing them for
posterity.
This exhibition is composed of some of the images
taken between 2008 and 2012. Susan has produced
a book, Dublin’s Working Prams, which also tells
some of the pram traders’ stories. Available in Dublin
City Libraries, and most bookshops, it can also
be obtained directly from the author by emailing
dublinprams@gmail.com
The exhibition will be on display in selected Dublin
City branch libraries, during library opening hours,
from April to September. For further information see

Hugh Lane’s 1913
Walkout
By Ciaran Woods
1913 saw momentous events taking place in Dublin.
One of them was the culmination of Sir Hugh Lane’s
simmering row with Dublin Corporation about the
building of a permanent home for his newly founded
Gallery of Modern Art. The lowest point in the row
occurred when Lane withdrew the loan of his 39
paintings from the gallery and sent them to London’s
National Gallery instead. This lecture will cover the
row itself, London and Dublin’s reaction to it – and
how the ramifications are still felt today. Presented by
Ciaran Woods, art historian and lecturer.

The photographs
illustrate many
aspects of Dublin
life in the second
half of the
twentieth century
including streets,
buildings, shops,
pubs, community
events and most
importantly
Dubliners. In many cases all that remains of these
times, people and places are photographs and your

even recognize yourself along the way. Oh yes, we

The Man in the
Woman’s Shoes
It’s October 1978, Autumn is closing in and Pat
Farnon has ‘some business’ to do in town. Follow Pat
as he walks the 5 miles from his wee white cottage
to town and back again and the marvels that he
meets along the way. It’s a charming encounter – an
ageing man still with a boundless enthusiasm for life.
Hilariously funny, tender and at times downright daft.
“I think none of us is old, me heart has never been
old…” The show was written by and stars Mikel Murfi.
It was developed with Sligo County Council Arts
Service and Hawk’s Well Theatre, Sligo as part of
Bealtaine 2012.

year for this quartet, their lives have never been the

Choral Singing
Workshop
Singing offers immense benefits
both physically and mentally.
The National Chamber Choir of
Ireland is offering the opportunity
to experience the joy of singing
in a workshop with Alan Leech, a
Tenor with the choir. Alan aims to
tap into the innate musicianship
of each group and through a short series of drills
explore the joy of singing together. He will bring some
new songs to the session but will also look at material
that the participants should know. The National
Chamber Choir of Ireland is supported by The Arts
Council / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and Dublin City
Council. Happy singing!

My Home is Your Home:
A Journey Round Syria by Mary Russell
Syria is a country few people
know much about – apart from
the political upheavals of the
last few months. My Home is
Your Home will change all that.
Equipped with notebook, biro,
bicycle and, occasionally, a bus
ticket, Mary Russell set off on her
travels. Going to places such as
Aleppo, Homs and Hama but also to
some of the more remote parts of Eastern Syria, and
taking, unexpectedly, an overnight taxi ride across the
desert from Damascus to Baghdad. The result is an
enthralling and quite unique account of this complex
country.
In My Home is Your Home, she employs the survival
strategies of the solo traveller, seasoning a devil-maycare attitude with a pinch of common sense when
taking on everything that comes her way in Syria – be
it a pack of feral dogs, an important host or a chainsmoking Sufi sheik. www.maryrussell.info

Dance Across Dublin
CoisCéim Broadreach
Dance Across Dublin is a dance theatre performance
presented by an ensemble cast of thirty dancers
aged 50+. Following a series of dance classes,
participants were invited to join a specially established
dance ensemble working with a professional
choreographer from CoisCéim Dance Theatre in the
creation of an original contemporary dance theatre
piece.
Dance Across Dublin draws inspiration from different
Dublin communities and the way in which people
identify with their own area. This lively dance theatre
performance presented by the ensemble is set to
some of the best dance music around from the great
classics to the latest popular hits.
“People gather from across Dublin for The Dance.
As they vie for space and attention weaving between
each other in a rich and colourful choreography,
a dark figure enters threatening to cut the event
and tear everything to shreds”. Philippa Donnellan,
CoisCéim Broadreach Director.

1943 – A Dance Odyssey
“Pretend you are a flower, opening up your petals”,
reminisces septuagenarian painter, Romy Hogan,
dreamily, of her childhood dance classes in 1943 –
A Dance Odyssey.
Once upon a time, during World War Two, enigmatic
Irish-German woman Erina Brady brought cutting
edge modern dance to Ireland from Germany. A
forgotten reel of film by Irish film industry founder Liam
Ó Laoghaire immortalised the mysterious modern
dancer teaching her tiny pupils in her Harcourt Street
Studio and dancing freely in the open air in his 1943
gem of a film, “Dance School”.
extraordinary classes the women share how the
modern dance pioneer influenced their lives, and
opened them up to a lifetime of creativity. Produced
