Chinese Kingship and Dutch Vripack teamed up to create the captivating Star. She is the story of China’s budding superyacht business bringing a Dutch design to life – a true East meets West tale. Her exterior lines with a dark blue hull and off white superstructure reflect a rather traditional styled luxury yacht. Star is a ‘gentleman’s yacht’ as reminiscent romantics would say – with an outside look and feel reviving a classic 1960s designs. According to Vripack’s designers, they had quite an evocative reason for this: “Call it our sense of nostalgia, but we believe that the yachts of the future will look like the yachts of the past.” As Vripack revealed, the synergy between designers, engineers and everyone in between birthed the cosmic beauty, worthy of her luminary name. Vripack’s Sales Director Marnix Hoekstra says: “Our team spent more than twelve thousand hours to design every little detail – from her fuel efficient hull to her chic interiors. The fact that families create new memories on board our designs gives us the adrenaline rush to push forward.” Sleek Lined Vripack’s naval architects created Star’s efficient hull with seaworthiness and ocean comfort top of mind. The two powerful Caterpillar engines achieve an impressive range of 4,500 nm at an economic speed of 10 knots and a maximum speed of 13.5 knots. Low fuel consumption is noticeable due to her sleek hull lines. The high flared bow and fully curved round bilge ensures her guests and crew are safe and at ease – even when the weather is less favorable. As a yacht designed for adventure, the Dutch naval architects focused strongly on creating the most efficient and safe underwater body. Vripack carefully crafted a silhouette that cuts through the water with ease and without limitation. Mr Hoekstra: “This is the fifth boat we are cooperating on and she is the best we have seen coming out of Asia so far.” Of Star’s sea trials, Mr Hoekstra exclaimed she performed “as she should, with not one alarm!” Cosy Minimalism In contrast to the classic outside look and feel, Star’s interior is more minimalistic, or an updated ‘late 1990s’ as Vripack describes it. With their cosy interior choices, the designers played to the cocooning trend, where people gather at home to socialise. Star is a charming home over water. All inside spaces radiate a fresh, serene atmosphere. The interior design’s base colour is white with materials and colour schemes carefully drawn from a natural palette to keep a harmonic flow. Vripack’s Design Studio combined hard surfaces, off white ceilings and counter tops with elegant Alcantara walls and softcushioned seating areas. The idea was to give the visual objects a different energy than the objects that come into contact with guests. “The design of Star is a Dutch minimalistic-meets-homey statement by our design studio,” says Hoekstra. “It is easy to fit a gentleman’s yacht with teak or other wood structures. So we refrained from using it anywhere. The base of every idea is off white and we carefully built up the material choices and colour schemes from there.” Vripack designed Star for the owners to experience luxury without compromise. The onboard entertainment system for example can be controlled remotely by tablet or smartphone. It all comes down to the details, says Vripack’s Design Director Bart Bouwhuis: “Another striking example is the little bench next to the aft deck entrance door. When you walk up to the passerelle swim platform or wait for the tender to pick you up, it is nice to be able to sit down and take off or put on your high heels before you go to the club.” Social Creature Star’s layout is unique, smart and lean. The spacious main deck features the main salon with a connected, Miele-equipped galley. A private office separates the comfy master suite from the public area. The lower deck accommodates four contemporary styled guest cabins with en-suite bathrooms, breathing the ship’s signature cool white atmosphere. Brightly coloured led-lighting provide a different personal touch to the rooms. Two of the guest cabins have additional Pullman beds, allowing a maximum of twelve guests on board. The sky lounge has butterfly doors, which can be opened to allow the outer and inner deck to form a large open space. The area begs for guest SuperYacht Industr y | Vo l u me 7 I I s s u e 4 | 4 5 > YACHT REPORT entertainment as a straight, wood-inlaid staircase connects it to the sundeck on fly bridge level. The designers expect the space to get plenty of attention with its full size Jacuzzi, comfortable sunpads, open bar, grill and lounge area. Envisioned for socialising – this element keeps the design team’s cocooning focus in mind. Vripack designed the social areas on the bridge and fly bridge, leaving the aft deck for two 6m tenders. As Star journeys around the globe, the crew needs to be located close to their workspace. The captain’s cabin is directly next to the bridge and the engineer next to the engine room in the aft. The crew area – with a separate staircase – is located at the front of the lower deck and is completely self sufficient, equipped with a spacious lounge and a private kitchen. Quite exceptional for a 42m superyacht, a fully air-conditioned, easily accessible engine area allows the engineer to inspect separate components. The engineer can also use the separate control room to operate the mechanical system. No Compromise Vow Kingship reflects the adventurous story of its founder, Roger Liang. His family was in the ferry > SuperYacht Industr y | Vo l u me 7 I I s s u e 4 | 4 7 YACHT REPORT business, so water was always on his mind. Armed with the family knowledge, he acquired several companies and became involved with two shipyards – Baglietto in Italy in the 1980s and Green Bay Marine in Singapore in the 1990s. “Call it our sense of nostalgia, but we believe that the yachts of the future will look like the yachts of the past.” When Mr Liang founded Kingship in 2004, he created Asia’s first shipyard specialising in the construction of steel hull and aluminium superstructure superyachts. The Hong Kong-based company with facilities at China’s ZhongShan port – located in the heart of the Pearl River Delta district – has a modern construction facility of over 242,000 m². It is so expansive, the yard can house up to seven yachts of 45 m at any one time. This year Kingship won the Best Asian Yacht builder (30 m and up) award at the Asia Boating Awards. This is the third time Kingship earned the title – after their 2008 and 2010 awards. The yard has a unique ability to set high standards in quality while sewing comfort, elegance, innovation and technology seamlessly together. The company is ISO 9001:2008 certified and obtained Quality Assurance and Management System by Bureau Veritas. Star is their fifth superyacht built in compliance with Lloyd’s and MCA. Kingship works with renowned designers and naval architects to create its luxury superyachts. Amongst the illustrious list are PB Design, Tony Castro, Luis DeBasto and Vripack. Kingship Managing Director Roger Liang states: “We take pride in working with the most respected designers and leading naval architects. Our uncompromising commitment to quality with meticulous attention to every detail from bow to stern enable us to meet our clients’ highest expectations.” SuperYacht Industr y | Vo l u me 7 I I s s u e 4 | 4 9 > YACHT REPORT Facts & Figures Principal Particulars Length o.a.
