Volleyball was always my first love in sports and my daughter was super tall, so I just knew she’d be a volleyball star!!! I was so excited for her and had great anticipation for the try outs. Much to my surprise she didn’t make it on the team. She was so broken hearted. I explained to her that we’d work on her skills throughout the year and summer and the following year she could try out again. The following day she came home ecstatic about something. Just beaming from ear to ear, she proceeded to tell me that she made the cross-country team. A little puzzled, I began to ask questions. “Did they have try outs?” “Is this something you’re passionate about?” “What actually happened?” She explained, “Well…. The coach came up to me and asked if I wanted to be a part of a fun team and that I could join and we’d have so much fun. It’s a great team!” I then asked, “Do you know what cross-country is?” She said, “No, but it’s going to be fun and I MADE THE TEAM!” I pretended to be happy for her even though I knew what was going to happen. I knew she wasn’t a runner because of her size and abilities. I am a firm believer that once you start something, you can’t be a quitter. Therefore, I had a serious discussion with her about her decision to join the team. I said, “Erryn, you realize that once you start something, you can’t quit until it’s over.” We talked about it and she agreed to it. She continued to run cross-country ALL 4 YEARS of high school. She wasn’t the best, and it was always very grueling for her AND for me to watch her. But I was always there at her meets encouraging her and rooting for her. She came home with a few medals throughout the 4 years, lettered and was on the varsity team. I was very proud of her yet always confused as to why she kept joining the team every year. But I never asked. The day after she graduated, I finally had that conversation. “Erryn, I have only one question. Why did you continue running cross-country after that first year? You hated cross-country.” She said, “You told me once I started something, I couldn’t quit until it was over.” I told her that was correct, but at the end of that first year it would have been over for the year. Then her little light bulb when on in her head!!! We laughed about it and I told her how proud I was. That’s perseverance!!! Now I come to the hard part of my message. I’m sure you’ve all heard through the grape vine that I resigned from the presidency. Because of the morals that I’ve instilled into my children, this has been such a hard battle and hard decision for me to make plus the “failure” stigma in my mind and the example I’m showing to my kids and friends. It wasn’t the choice I wanted to make, but the choice I have to make. While I still have a good job at Hallmark, the fact is that our jobs are not stable. Layoffs are becoming common. Retirement? Hahaha, now that’s funny. For the last five or so years I’ve been planning for that possibility. I call it my “Plan B”. I have acreage that’s just sitting there, doing nothing. In my “Plan B”, the acreage works for me. It’s now time to put “Plan B” into motion while I’m still financially and physically capable. There’s an entrepreneurial business course that I need to take (and want to take) beginning in January that will conflict with my presidential responsibilities and a few months of dances. I felt that it would be better for all of us if I stepped down. I felt that I needed to give 100% toward my “Plan B” at this time in my life and let someone else devote 100% to square dancing which I know Jerry Belgum will do. After working with Jerry for the past 7 months, I felt so confident in his passion for square dancing and his knowledge about the business decisions, that I knew it was time for me to make the change. I’ve found that Jerry is a very unique individual and his heart is for square dancing. Like I said at the last dance, “He lives, breathes and probably eats square dancing.” You have to understand he’s a “by the book” type leader and very serious about that. If you get to know him, which isn’t easy, you’ll find he lights up and smiles when he talks about dancing. I feel I am leaving you all in good hands for the remainder of my term. Be assured that I’m not a quitter or a failure. I’m doing what’s best for all of us and will continue to be present when I can. Thank you for the wonderful opportunity you’ve blessed me with as your President.
