The Pastfinder - Ashland County Chapter of The Ohio Genealogical
The Pastfinder QUARTERLY NEWSLETIER OF THE ASHLAND COUNTY CHAPTER OHIO GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY * VQLUME 9 ISSUE 1 FEBRUARY 1990 * PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE This year we greet a new decade. Just think, 20 decades ago a few white men were beginning to trickle into what is now Ohio! As these decades passed many things have happened, in 1790 there were 2 counties formed. In the next decade it increased to 18 and a state formed, the following decade there were 58 counties. Thousands of people and 2 more d~cades and 88 counties finalized Ohio. The Ohio Genealogical Society also grew fast. Formed nearly 3 decades ago it now has a chapter in nearly every county, and in some, more than one. Out-of-state chapters are forming and every chapter welcomes out of county members. Our state was so pivotal in furnishing settlers to other states that many find their ancestors in Ohio counties. The Ashland Chapter, formed 2 decades ago, will celebrate it's 20th Birthday on April 11th of this year. We are greatful for all of our members, both in Ashland county and out of the area. We find our willing hands here and our support from afar. We also are thankful for all of our growth this last decade. It is possible to send these newsletters from our Ashland chapter, but just a decade ago it took the Richland and Ashland county area together to send you genealogical information. Our First Families dinner, December 5th, welcomed 15 new FFOAC members with a Cherokee medicine man, Stephen Marks, taking us closer to that 1st decade when the Indians and white settlers lived together in our area. We also enjoyed awarding the comforter, made by local hands, to a very surprised Duane Switzer of Mace-donia, Ohio. The first year of this new decade celebrates 175 years since the founding of Uniontown (now Ashland) in 1815. It later became the county seat when the county was formed from Wayne, Richland, Huron and Lorain counties in 1846. Should you plan a visit during this celebration year, we hope you can join us in one of our meetings - we would be pleased to see you. FFOAC James coutts of Cedarburg WI: George Wm.
