2 Shepherd Sports Fall 2015
President’s Message
This being the first issue of Shepherd Sports since I was
elected president of our fine organization, I want to take a
moment to introduce myself to those who may not know
me. Very briefly, I have been involved in this sport since
1997, actively training and trialing several dogs, two to the
World Championship. My wife, Mia, is also active in the
sport, as is our oldest son, Jesse. All three of us are training
dogs from our own breeding.
I have been a club president, a regional chair, a director
on the national board and the national helper director.
Having worked at all these levels, I have many ideas about
how to improve the GSSCC. My first goal is to improve
communications. I have been sending updates after all of
our meetings to Facebook and the website, and I will continue to do so to try to keep everyone in the loop.
I will work to the best of my ability for you. If anyone
needs anything, please feel free to contact me anytime.
I would like to congratulate the PEI Schutzhund Club
and the clubs of the East Region for hosting an excellent
Canadian German Shepherd Dog Championships and
Sieger Show!
Congratulations to all the handlers and dogs that made
it to the Canadian Championships and to those who won.
All the winners and teams that represented, or will represent, Canada at the international level are detailed in the
report on the Nationals in this issue of Shepherd Sports.
After many years of hard work, Doug Deacon has
stepped down as head judge. The Board and I would like
to thank him for his dedication, ability and hard work.
Thanks, Doug! The executive has appointed Lance Collins
as GSSCC head judge. Congratulations, Lance!
The executive has finalized the national appointments
and committee chairs. The list can be found on p. 25 of this
edition of Shepherd Sports or by clicking on Contact us on
the GSSCC website.
We have established an IT
Committee and a Policy
Review Committee. The
IT Committee, headed
by Jennifer Jones and
me, includes some
very talented IT people within the GSSCC.
Our goal is to modernize GSSCC paperwork,
and we have the team
to do it!
The Policy Review
Committee was created out
of a need to take a closer look
at our policy manual. This review will likely result in a
number of proposed changes, which will be brought to the
general membership for approval, according to the guidelines laid out in the policy manual. This committee is led
by Jennifer Jones, as she is translating the entire manual
into French. Please contact Jennifer if you are interested in
serving on the policy committee.
The executive received a motion from Paul Dethyse
proposing a change to the policy manual. You can read
this motion by going to the Members Section of the GSSCC
website and clicking on AGM Reports & Minutes, Motions
& Updates. The motion also appears in the Notice Board
in this edition of Shepherd Sports. It, too, will be brought before the general membership for consideration, according
to the guidelines laid out in the GSSCC policy manual.
Please check the website and Facebook page often for
updates and notes from the president and the GSSCC
Board of Directors.

Editor’s Message
Hope you enjoy this issue of Shepherd Sports. I would
especially like to thank everyone involved in the 2015 Nationals for their co-operation in submitting all the bits and
pieces — the stories, the photos, the trial and show results,
the AGM minutes — that made the coverage of the championships as complete as possible.
And then there are the club reports, which are the backbone of the magazine. Thank you to all the club reporters and photographers, who take the time to keep SchH
friends across the country up-to-date on their news.
The photo on the right
was snapped by Loretta
Brewer-Thijssen of the East
Coast Working Dog Club.
Can there be any doubt
about the title? I worked
hard for this ball and I’m
gonna keep it!

Notice Board
New Guidelines for WUSV Championships
Future procedure for the medical checkup
of dogs registered for WUSV championship events
Ladies and Gentlemen:
Today, we would like to inform you about the taking effect of a new requirement for the participation at WUSV
championship events which will apply from January 1,
2016, on.
On March 20, 2015, the board of directors of the
WUSV decided that for all dogs to be registered for the
participation at WUSV championship events — i.e.,
the WUSV World Championship, the WUSV Universal
Championship and the future WUSV Tracking Dog
Championship — the verification of an examination of
the hips and elbows has to be shown in the pedigree.
The year 2015 shall be considered a transitional period
and only serve as a recommendation. From January 1,
2016, this new guideline shall be legally binding. Dog
owners who fail to provide the proof required will be
excluded from the respective event. The x-ray examinations may be carried out in the respective countries of
origin of the animals.
In this connection we would also like to once again
point out and emphasize the relevant rules and provisions in terms of the IPO. If a dog’s condition does
not allow for his or her participation in the desired
event, the head judge is obliged to suspend the animals
from the game respectively competition. If it becomes
obvious that an animal is in pain, this also entails the
suspension respectively exclusion from the event. Please
be explicitly advised that it is not allowed to administer
medication in order to achieve relief from pain to the
effect that the dog can still participate or to increase the
animal’s performance. In case that it becomes obvious
that this provision was not complied with, this will likewise lead to a suspension from the event.
With kind regards
Clemens Lux

6 Shepherd Sports Fall 2015
2015 National Championships
GSSCC Championships
From July 29 to August 2, East Region clubs hosted this year’s
Canadian German Shepherd Dog Championships and Sieger Show in Winsloe, P.E.I.
by Isis Flügge
As I write this article, a whole month has gone by since
our national event, but it seems like just yesterday that
our club field was bustling with hundreds of people. Our
little region worked hard each and every day to make this
year’s Nationals a good one. A huge thank you to Fundy
Schutzhund Club, East Coast Working Dog Club, Newfoundland Schutzhund Club, Central New Brunswick
Schutzhund Club and, of course, Prince Edward Island
Schutzhund Club for working day and night to ensure
that the 2015 GSSCC Championships and Sieger Show
was successful. A huge shout-out also to Fredericton IPO
Club!
We have gotten a ton of e-mails from competitors from
all over the States and Canada complimenting us on our
delicious local food, the island hospitality and the overall
relaxing atmosphere that surrounds Charlottetown in the
summertime. This certainly would not have been possible without the endless number of sponsors, the sportsman-like showing by all the competitors and the infinite
number of volunteers who stepped up to the plate.
The hosting committee did an excellent job of welcoming guests from all over North America. I can say with certainty that competitors felt very welcome and appreciated
the open-field practice times before the official practice.
Not only were our tracking fields phenomenal (other than
the swarms of mosquitoes), but track layers Neil McIntosh
and Kip Day, assisted by Jonathan Constable, and the rest
of the tracking crew also did a remarkable job of making
sure that regulations were followed to a T. The helpers
also did an amazing job; Kelly Readman, Duane Roul, and
Patrick Girard worked diligently and reliably throughout
all the protection routines.
We also had some outstanding judges. The GSSCC
would like to thank Klaus Bartnik, Dave Grant and
Helmut König for their consistency and fairness in judging every competitor. Thank you also to Jim Chrisp for
judging the long down and to Doug Deacon for overseeing the whole event.
There were certainly some high scores this year. Congratulations to Lance Collins and Haakon vom Mörfelder
Left Raino Flügge (second from left) and Universal Siegerin Wencke vom Kiebitzende and Ken Trouton (far right) and Universal
Sieger Hercules von Grünberg with judges Klaus Bartnik (far left) and Helmut König (second from right). Right Congratulations

Fall 2015 Shepherd Sports 7
2015 National Championships
Land, Raino Flügge and Wencke vom Kiebitzende, Darren
Pidruchney and Flynne von Dragonhaus, Gabi Hoffman
and Finn vom Metterursprung, and Shanon Rawlinson
and Checker vom Speedteam Bodensee, who earned the
top five spots respectively. These five dog–handler teams,
along with team captain Nancy Wong, represented Canada at the 2015 WUSV World Championships in Finland in
late September.
In addition to the WUSV team, the GSSCC also sent a
team to the FCI World Championships. Congratulations to
Katarzyna Kasia Pawlowska and Avallone Ari, Monique
Anstee and H Reggie vom Haus Juros, Aaron Almeida and
Crush von der Fan, and team captain Robin Winter and Fiesta von Narnia, who represented Canada in Switzerland
in early September.
The third Canadian team will represent us at the WUSV
Universal Championships in Germany next year. Congratulations to Ken Trouton and Hercules von Grünberg, who
last year placed second at this international event, Jennifer
Jones and Caper vom Haus Dooling Kaltenbach, and team
captain Jürgen Fischer. Just a word of warning: I hear the
obedience judge, Raino Flügge, is a tough one!
Clearly, the GSSCC will be well-represented at all three
world competitions. It was a pleasure to compete at the
Nationals alongside all these teams, as their sportsmanlike
demeanour certainly created a supportive atmosphere for
other competitors. The East Region and the GSSCC wish
them all the best of luck!
Our Sieger show was also a success, drawing competitors from as far away as Florida, Texas and California.
Huge congratulations to Windy Pool and V1 Athena von
Zauberwiesen, who was handled by 10-year old Morgan,
and to Abhai Kaul and VA1 Kerry vom Königsadler. Athena and Kerry were crowned the 2015 GSSCC Siegerin and
Sieger respectively.
The GSSCC is also proud to announce our Long Stock
Coat Siegerin: VA Harlee vom Haus Heartland, owned
by Hank Bowden. This team made Sieger show history:
Harlee is the first long stock coat in North America to earn
a VA rating!
Lastly, the GSSCC’s 2015 Universal Sieger is Hercules
von Grünberg, handled by Ken Trouton, and the 2015
Universal Siegerin is Wencke vom Kiebitzende, handled
by Raino Flügge. Hercules and Wencke showed that they
have superb working abilities and grace in the show ring.
Congratulations!
We truly had a blast during the show. It was encouraging to see young handlers in the show ring; congratulations, Morgan and Gabby, on your multiple first-place
finishes!
Helmut König gave very constructive feedback to the
show competitors, and there was a sense of camaraderie
among all the handlers in and
out of the show ring.
It’s hard to believe that
this event came and went as
quickly as it did. It was surely
an exhausting week filled with
lots of laughs, encouraging
hugs and tons of seafood. East
Region members have finally
caught up on sleep, and we
are wrapping up the last few
things before getting ready for
our fall trials. We look forward
to travelling to Québec next
year, and we wish that region
all the best in organizing the
2016 GSSCC Championships
and Sieger Show. If we learned
anything in the past year, it is
how much work and prepaIPO1 podium finishers pose with their dogs. From left to right: Brian Donnelly and Will vom

2015 National Championships
Lance Collins, Canadian Champion
This profile of Lance Collins was put together by a group of his friends in the sport.
“Try not to become a man of success, but try rather to become
a man of value. He is considered successful in our day who gets
more out of life than he puts in. But a man of value will give
more than he receives.”
— Albert Einstein (quoted by William Miller in Life magazine, 1955)
Our 2015 Canadian champion, Lance Collins, is such
a man of value.
It’s pretty easy to find
Lance’s bio. Just check out
the website of the West
Coast German Shepherd
Schutzhund Club. Lance
has been training in
Schutzhund as a hobby
since 1980 and has qualified for Team Canada 11 times. He started judging in 1990
and has judged all over the world, including at the WUSV
Weltmeisterschaft.
In about 1990, Lance and a group of dog training
enthusiasts started the WCGSSC, which has become the
most successful club in Canada. This year, the club sent its
33rd and 34th members to represent Canada at the WUSV
World Championships. While impressive in itself, this statistic does not include the host of other competitors whom
Lance has helped to qualify for Team Canada.
With his wife, Dr. Gabi Hoffmann, with whom he has
shared the national podium no less than
five times — surely a record — Lance
14 Shepherd Sports Fall 2015
has competed at the world level four times since 2009.
(The only break in this competitive streak came when he
received the immense honour of being asked to judge the
event. When the Germans ask you, a foreigner, to judge
“their” sport on their home turf, that is high praise indeed.)
His partnership with Gabi is truly that. The years have
shown that the difficulty of training, travelling and competing with your spouse has made each of them stronger
and better. Could there be a bigger way to stress a relationship than to go head to head with your spouse, vying
for the top spot? And then there are the sheer logistics of
travelling, training and competing with multiple dogs.
And yet each sharpens the other. Their successes build
more successes and their failures spur brainstorming and
problem solving — problem solving that usually benefits
the rest of us as they pass on to others what they have
learned.
One of the things that makes Lance unique is his commitment to sharing his knowledge and experience. If the
mark of great teachers is that they lift their students above
them, then surely Lance is the giant on whose shoulders
so many others in this sport stand. As many as his successes have been, he never forgets his debt to all those who
shared their knowledge with him — those who taught and
nurtured and cajoled and yelled and swore and shared insights gleaned from both successes and failures. This debt
has been paid forward more times than can be counted, in
the numbers of others who have attended the Invitational
Workweek, who have stood on podiums everywhere,
and who have achieved a title they never thought they
could.
But the one thing that you will hear from Lance
Collins again and again is not the story of his
successes; it is the story of what he learned from
his mistakes — the commitment to trying again,
the analysis of “what went wrong and how to
fix it.” And above all, his commitment to his
abiding goal: to see Team Canada stand on the
podium at the WUSV Worlds — because we are
good enough, and we will do it in his lifetime.
Left Lance at his spiritual home in the sport, the ruins
of a Roman villa near Tengen, Germany, where he
forged lasting friendships and worked hundreds of dogs
as he cut his teeth in helper work. Right Lance and Haakon
vom Mörfelder Land at this year’s Canadian Nationals.

Old Business
Dave J. read out the motions that had been sent out to
members with the election ballots.

seconder were not indicated. According to the minutes of
a special meeting of August 29, 2003 (published in Shepherd
16 Shepherd Sports Fall 2015
Sports), and which were read out, regarding executive motions being published. Discussion regarding the validity
of the motions being on the same paper as the election
ballots.
Motion: Aaron Almeida, seconded by Craig Wandtke, to
discard the entire mailed-out ballots. Defeated.
Motion: Raino Flügge, seconded by Frank Caputo, to remove the results of the policy changes from the mailed-out
ballots, as no mover and seconder indicated. Discussion.
Motion was withdrawn.
As head of the Elections Committee, Ken Trouton clarified the ballot process.
Ken T. read out the results of the motions: 6(b) motion
passed; 6(h) motion passed; 15.4(e) motion passed; 43(s)
motion passed; 5(g) motion passed.
New Business
Question was raised regarding the helper selection for the
Nationals. Dave J. clarified the selection process.
Motion: Dale Comeau, seconded by Duane Roul, to create
an “alternate” position in addition to the five WUSV Team
Canada members. A second motion was made that the
alternate’s expenses to the Worlds should be covered.
Discussion. Dave J. indicated that an alternate is not always available to the five-person team. Further discussion
of available resources. Dialogue, comments and suggestions for building funds. Motion was withdrawn.
Lance Collins indicated the need for a business plan–
budget. Dave J. indicated that funds for helper and judges’
training had been allocated, and a budget has been created. Also working on a database for membership and trial
paperwork.
To cut down on expenses, Dave J. is working with Anthony on setting up a test e-ballot for the fall.
Motion: Eric LeBlanc, seconded by Raino Flügge, to accept
the proposed 2015–16 budget as presented. Carried.
2016 Championship Presentation — Frank McEniry

and the Eastern Region for their work in hosting this
year’s Nationals.
Quebec will host the Championships in 2016. Host club
is IPO Sport, a relatively new club but with some experienced members. The event will be in Ste-Hyacinthe, near
Montreal. Due to logistics, the event will be held August
10–14, 2016. Location is at a high school field, with availability of the school facilities for meeting rooms, etc. The
website should be up and running in about a month.
Ontario will host the 2017 Nationals.

WWDC Fire Update
Rising from the Ashes
An arsonist may have torched the Winnipeg Working Dog Club’s facilities,
but club members weren’t going to let a little thing like that faze them.
On September 20, 2014, some idiot(s) burnt down our clubhouse, shed and adjoining metal container. Nothing was
stolen. It was purely a hate crime.
Now, almost a year later, we want to show the rest of
the country what can be accomplished by some determined individuals.
Nothing would have been possible without the kind
and generous donations from across the country. The people and clubs who donated are the true, unselfish sportspeople, who want the sport to survive and grow. We will
always remember what you did for us.
Whether it was rafters, metal roofing, training equipment or money, everything was used, and slowly but surely, we rebuilt. We just hosted our first event since the fire,
and we’re all very proud of what we have accomplished.
As you can see in the pictures, it was a lot of work, but
almost everything is done.
We hope to see any and all of you in the future at one of
our events.
Thanks again to the ones who donated and care about
others in the sport.

Club Reports
Winnipeg Working Dog Club
The club has been busy training and rebuilding. A few of
us headed west to the Prairie Regionals in Edmonton in
June. It was great to see a lot of friends there. Jim and Enzo
didn’t have the results in trial that they would have liked,
but that’s the dog sport for you.
Next was the Nationals in PEI. What an event! Everyone
had praise for the organizers. Congratulations to all the
competitors who made the teams, whether it be WUSV,
FCI or Universal Sieger.
We just finished hosting a very successful seminar
with Stefan Schaub. Everyone came away with so much
Central Plains Schutzhund Club
Central Plains Schutzhund Club? What? Who? That’s
right, you read it correctly; we still exist! And we’re training hard! This club, with members still training since the
GSSCC was formed in 1979, has a current core group that
includes eight members, three of whom are brand new
to the sport. This group reliably meets for training many
times each week. We also have approximately eight “parttime” members, who train semi-regularly when they can.
Which means, when everyone shows up, we have some
busy helpers!!
The arrival of some of our members seemed to shock
the Prairie Region when we showed up to watch Regionals this summer in Edmonton. We are excited to say that
we are hoping to make many more appearances, possibly
even with our dogs, in the months and years to come! At
the moment, we are planning to offer
to host the Regionals in 2017.
Barry Gay, our club’s GSSCC
teaching helper, along with Bob
Gallagher, no longer have to exhaust
themselves catching all the dogs and
can now leave some of the work to
Dylan Powell, our club’s new helper. Dylan is club-level certified and
has been training with us for two
years. Most of his education has been
aimed at learning to develop our
dogs in the protection phase, but he
has managed to qualify at the club
helper level along the way. Many
thanks to Danny Grayson of Austin,
Texas, for his two visits, as well as to
Barry’s continuing guidance, Dylan
is really starting to see what’s needed
improvement and information. Thanks again to everyone
who helped to put it on, and to our guests from Victoria,
Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Brandon and Brazil.
We have new club members this year. Joining are
Mandy, Robert and Brenda, Sam and Travis, Janis, and
Fred and Renatta — and coming back to the fold are Jeff
and Maria. It’s great to see so many new faces who are
willing to help out in any way they can.
We have a trial with Dorwin Anderson coming up in
two weeks. Many are nervously training towards their
titles. It should be a great time as usual.
Good luck to everyone in the future, and hope to see
you all in our new clubhouse sometime soon (see p. 18).
for each dog. We also have a few more entry-level helpers
whom we hope to eventually certify for work in trials of
the future.
By the time you read this, Oct. 9 and 10 will have
passed, and we will have hosted our club trial in Saskatoon with SV and Canadian judge Frank Mensing, Canada’s first judge. Many of the dogs from our club will be
trialing that weekend, and we hope to see many others
come out as well!

Club Reports
Lower Mainland
German Shepherd Dog Club
After a very long, hot summer, we are heading into fall
and this means rain (something most of us in the Vancouver area are very familiar with).
The past few months have certainly been busy and
exciting. We are very proud that two LMGSDC members
qualified for world-level events. Big congratulations to Kasia Pawlowska and Avallone Ari on their seventh-place
finish at the GSSCC Nationals, which qualified them for
the FCI team. In addition, Ken Trouton’s Hank (Hercules

It has been a heads-down-and-train kind of summer at
Synergy. Nothing terribly exciting to report.
Jim got himself a new puppy, a very promising young
prospect who is showing a lot of talent so far. The pup’s
father just won the Bundessieger, and we expect big things
of Jim and The Gaz.
We’re gearing up for the fall trials — and are very excited about how many trials are scheduled in the Ontario
Region this fall!
von Grünberg) was named Universal Sieger and qualified
again for the WUSV Universal Team.
It was also great to see many Lower Mainland members
show support and attend the Nationals: Dorwin, Helen,
Nancy, Andrea, Dave, Phil and Johnathan. Thanks to
Johnathan for all the pictures on Facebook so we could
follow along with the trip.
The Racine Hyatt seminar was a success and covered
topics such as managing old and new injuries, preventive
measures and activities for puppies.
We have several promising Hank and Franz puppies in
the club now, and it will be exciting to watch them mature.
A couple of members who took the summer off for
work are back out on the field. Yay! Penny is also starting
a new puppy, Bella, and Andrea has one on the way, so
right now, we are club that is heavy on young dogs and a
few retired dogs, with not many in between.
Congratulations to member Chris Tsiakos on his new
helper certification: club trial, front half. Chris brings
youth, athleticism and enthusiasm in abundance to the
table. Congratulations also to Marvin Eng on recertifying
at the national level.
Good luck to everyone in all your trials! Have fun and
train hard!

Club Reports
Comox Valley Working Dog Club
It has been a very busy summer. The sport is growing
in Comox Valley with a lot of interest over the last few
months. Welcome to new members: Barb and Booker;
Paul, Lisa and DJ; Jennifer and Shiloh; Jen, Doug and
Rocco; and Brad and Kaya. Welcome back to the
sport, Doug and Heather.
Next year is going to be a very fun year with a
good group of very dedicated and hardworking
members. A few are interested in learning helper
work, so that will be great.
Our club was preparing for an October trial
and working hard. Good luck to all.
We are planning a big winter of working hard
towards next year’s trials. We are also planning a
couple of seminars and a May trial next spring, so
there is lots of work to do.
We had a booth at the town fair this year, and
although the weather brought a much-needed rainstorm for three days, it was a great time. According
to Barb we will have a team “positive talk” group with
Howie leading the way. Well . . . now, that should be great
fun!
Happy training!
East Coast
Working Dog Club
ECWDC members want to congratulate PEISC and the East Region for
hosting a successful 2015 GSSCC
Nationals. It was hard work but a
lot of fun. Duane Roul, Sara Sanford and Ferdi Van de Kruisweg participated in the Seiger
show. Duane Roul, Heather MacLeod, Karen March and
Angela Fleming volunteered at the event, helping with
the silent auction, the food and beer tent, field setup, first
response and athletic therapy, group and many other
tasks. We are all especially proud of Duane, who was
the front-half helper during protection.
Recently we hosted a regional working weekend.
We were pleased with the attendance and it was fun.
ECWDC, FIPO, Fundy SC and PEISC, other working dog agencies, two new helpers and five breeds
were represented. Working weekends allow for the
sharing of knowledge, socializing and preparing for
upcoming fall trials. ECWDC members would like to
thank Darin Clarke and Kim MacInnis for their help.

members welcomed by

We wish all GSSCC members successful trials this fall
and enjoyed cheering for those who represented Canada
internationally.

Club Reports
York Region
Schutzhund Club
For YRSC members, this past
summer was topsy-turvy, to put it
mildly. A couple of us moved house, another was in the
midst of planning a move, others have been preoccupied
with unexpected and sometimes very sad life changes, and
some have been dealing with all the above. As a result, for
a while, training was hit-and-miss for nearly everyone.
During this time, some members expanded their horizons and become involved in competing with their dogs
in other venues, such as dock diving, rally, agility, barn
hunting, and search and rescue. Congratulations to Magnum on his successful dock-diving debut and to Next, who
achieved two qualifying legs toward a rally title. Efforts
like these can only help to reinforce the dog–handler bond
that is so important in Schutzhund and all dog sports.
Fundy Schutzhund Club
It sure was great to see so many of
you in Charlottetown this summer for
the Canadian championships. I hope
you all had as much fun on the Island as we did. It was a
great event and congratulations to all the clubs of the East
Region for pulling it off. Particular kudos to the Prince
Edward Island Schutzhund Club for all your hard work.
And thanks to everyone who sent us feedback and kind
words after the event. As we recovered from exhaustion in
the days following, it sure was nice to hear that our efforts
were appreciated.
Congratulations to Team Canada: Lance and Haakon,
Raino and Wencke, Darren and Flynne, Gabi and Finn and
Shanon and Checker. We were cheering for you as you
competed at the 2015 WUSV World Championships in
Finland.
Team Fundy was represented on the trial field at the
Nationals by Dale and Vinnie, as well as Mia and Bruno.
Unfortunately, Vinnie injured himself during protection
and wasn’t able to finish the routine. The club was also
represented in the show ring by Anne and Frisco, Jamie
This fall, we started sharing our field with a newly formed search-and-rescue group. They use the field
and the surrounding wooded areas on days when the
club is not training, and we hope that there will be some
cross-pollination of useful training ideas and techniques —
as well as help with some of the field-maintenance chores
that no one enjoys.
Now that the disrupted summer of 2015 is behind us
(fingers crossed!), club members have gotten back to serious training. We have initiated an active training program
that includes excursions to work with experienced trainers, as well as hosting others to work with us at the club
grounds. With several of these sessions — mini-seminars,
in some respects — under our belts, club members are
pumped and looking forward to sharing even more tips
and training ideas as we sharpen our routines and expand
our repertoire of training strategies. And best of all, we’ve
been having fun with one another and with our dogs.
and Duco, Sherri and Heidi, and Darin and Hercles.
Though Kip and Angela did not compete this year, they
certainly worked their butts off at the tracking fields and
then in the show ring — and wherever else help was
needed. Thanks to all FSC members who were there and
pitched in wherever and whenever they were needed.
Proud of you guys and gals!
With the Nationals behind us, it was time to enjoy
what was left of summer. Well, except Darin maybe, who
jumped right into his new job as GSSCC president. Good
luck, Darin!
I’d also like to welcome some new members to our
club: Keith and Rowdy, Penni and Xeva, Melissa and Elsa,
Vanessa and Cali and Catherine and Herbie. In addition
to Elsa and Herbie, we have several members with young
dogs or puppies. There’s Anne with Frisco, Sherri with
Heidi, Darin with Hercles, and Jamie with Duco. Lots and
lots of puppies, and we look forward to watching them
grow and reach their potential.
Next on the agenda for the Fundy Schutzhund Club was
our annual Oktoberfest trial on October 24.
Good luck with the rest of the trial season, everyone!
Are you eligible for a sport medal?
Mia Clarke
Handlers who have completed an AD and accumulated the required points
by trialing successfully are eligible for a bronze, silver, gold or platinum sport medal.

Club Reports
Chinook Schutzhund Club of Alberta
Club members had a busy summer. We hosted Dean
Calderon, who has competed for the USA at the WUSV
Worlds many times, as well as at the FCI Worlds, for a
three-day seminar at the end of June. Dean worked long
days and participants got excellent instruction in all three
phases of the sport. The positive change in some of the
dogs during that time was impressive, and the fact that the
changes have continued after the seminar speaks volumes.
Our Temperament Test fundraiser at the end of August
was booked solid every day, with more than 70 dogs taking the test. The participants enjoyed the smooth organization and feedback from the judge.
Along with earning a TT, Gwen and Lana were also
busy in other venues, earning a second Draft Dog Excellent and a Master Obedience Trial Champion. Shannon is
aiming for Lana’s IPO2 and ZTP this fall, and then Lana is
heading for the whelping box.
Terry and Roar have worked very hard in preparation
for trialing for their IPO1 this fall. We wish this team much
success.

her Safir, IPO3A. Alla and Safir have been tracking dili-

First, we would like to thank the
Prince Edward Island Schutzhund
Club and all the clubs from the East
Region for coming together to put on
the 2015 GSSCC Nationals. Congratulations to all the teams that represented — and will go on
to represent — Canada in international events. It was great
to see Niagara club members Craig, Jack and Shandra out
on the field at the Nationals. We are very proud of Jack
and Bowser for making the front page of The Guardian,
Charlottetown’s daily newspaper.
As I write this, we are getting ready for our club trial
with GSSCC judge Jim Crisp on September 20. We have a
good turnout, as most club members are trialing, and we
have a couple of entries from other clubs. Good luck to all
the competitors.
Planning for next year’s Ontario Regional Championships, which our club will host, is under way. A Facebook
page will be up and running soon. We will give updates
when we get confirmation. The working championship
and show will take place on two different weekends.
gently and will soon add the full IPO3 to his name. Safir
also came through the Temperament Test with flying
colours.
To catch up to the Rottweilers, Zamir and Vince are
each looking forward to a new GSD pup in 2016.
We hoped to see some of you at our October trial with

Club Reports
Prince Edward Island
Schutzhund Club
As this is being written, we are still
enjoying beautiful, warm sunny days
here on P.E.I., and everyone has managed to recover from
hosting the 2015 GSSCC Championships and Sieger Show!
Club members are now busy training and preparing for
various trials this fall.
After a busy spring and summer planning and preparing for the Nationals on P.E.I., the time finally arrived for
us to show the judges, competitors and guests our lovely
island and friendly hospitality. During the event, we were
grateful for such wonderful support from the rest of the
East Region. Everyone pitched in to help wherever they
were needed. Thank you!!
The PEISC was well-represented at the Nationals this
year by the teams of Raino and Wencke, Harry and Elvis,
Kim and Rieka, and Isis and Wynne. Not only did they
compete, but they all also worked hard behind the scenes
every day.
Some notable highlights from the trial:
• PEI won the Team Challenge Award this year.
• Isis won the Sportsmanship Award.
(Not only did she compete in the
trial and show, but she also provided translations for the judges,
was show secretary and helped
out wherever she was needed.
Outstanding job!)
• Raino and Wencke vom
Kiebitzende placed second in
the trial with a score of 283 and
24 Shepherd Sports Fall 2015
proudly represented us on Team Canada at the WUSV
World Championships in Finland in September. Congratulations, Raino and Wencke!!
• Kim and Rieka vom Kiebitzende and Isis and Wynne
vom Kiebitzende were asked to go to the FCI World
Championships, although they did not attend.
• Great showing by Harry and Elvis vom Mack-Zwinger
in obedience. They are now getting ready to compete at
the New England Regionals.
Notable highlights from the show:
• Jean and Dexter vom Kiebitzende placed first among
six- to nine-month-old long stock coat males.
• Raino and Wencke placed second among working-class
females and second in bite work among females.
• Wencke was crowned Universal Siegerin.
• Kofi vom Kiebitzende, who was handled by eight-yearold Gabi Ramirez, placed first among veteran males.
• Raino and the vom Kiebitzende kennel showed in the
working-line kennel group (first time ever at a Canadian national event) and achieved second place.
• Raino showed a Kofi progeny group and placed first.
This was also the first time that a working-line progeny
group was shown at a Canadian Sieger show.
Way to go everyone! We are proud of all your achievements. Happy training.
