Irish Update For Alumni of St. Patrick, St. Patrick Central and Bishop McNamara Catholic High School VOLUME 31, NO. 1 • FALL 2012 FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Terry Granger Irish Alumni, As we, the Irish Alumni, celebrate 90 years of providing a Catholic education in the greater Kankakee community, I realize the rich tradition that we were so blessed to experience. As graduates of St. Patrick’s, St. Patrick Central, and Bishop McNamara, we are all connected by one common thread, the transformational experience, known as the “Irish Experience!” I feel very fortunate to have personally witnessed the “Irish Experience,” first as a student, later as a teacher, and now serving as the Principal. Our school provides our students with a rigorous college preparatory curriculum to ensure their success in college and most importantly, to ensure they are contributing members of our complex society. It is our duty to prepare our students to meet the challenges of the 21st century head on, equipped with a strong moral compass, and guided by their values, in order to be successful beyond their high school years. But this “Irish Experience” is not just a story of success in education. It is a story of a Catholic education that transforms our students, inspires our alumni, causes heartfelt commitment amongst our faculty, and gives hope to our Church and to our community! This is where you, the Irish Alumni, come into play! Our success in education and this transformational experience over the past 90 years would not be the same without your generous support. Your belief in the value of Catholic education and the continued success of the “Irish Experience” is deeply appreciated. The need is great. The need is growing. Your continued generosity is critical. It is likewise so effective! You are doing great things for our Church and for these young men and women of Bishop McNamara through your charity. We couldn’t do it without you, and it is through your continued support that I am confident that Bishop McNamara Catholic High School will provide quality Catholic education for at least another 90 years! With all my heart, I say “thank you!” Granger Named Principal Mr. Terry Granger has been named Principal of Bishop McNamara Catholic High School by Most Rev. R. Daniel Conlon, Bishop of the Diocese of Joliet. Terry holds a B.S. in Business Administration, an M.A. in Education Administration and has completed the Executive Leadership in Catholic Education program offered by the University of Notre Dame. He graduated from Bishop McNamara in 1976, and taught Business and Social Studies at Mac from 1981 till 1994. For the past ten years he has served as Principal of Maternity BVM grade school in Bourbonnais. Gratefully yours in Christ, Terry lives in Bourbonnais with his wife Jackie Devine Granger who graduated from Bishop McNamara in 1979. Their youngest child Alison is a freshman at Mac, and their two sons are Mac graduates, Casey in 2008 and Adam in 2006. My name is Tricia Dotson and I am a 1990 graduate of Bishop McNamara. It is my pleasure to be serving as the Alumni Association President. The Alumni Board has been hard at work planning activities that will give alumni a chance to reunite and work together to give back to the institution that has positively impacted so many of our lives. Vince Lombardi once said, “The achievements of an organization are the results of the combined effort of each individual.” McNamara is an organization that we are all stakeholders in. Our focus this year will be in rekindling the passion and loyalty that inspired each of us and our families to be a part of the McNamara experience. In doing this, the Alumni Board is in need of help from many of you. We would like to designate two to three “class captains” for each of the graduating classes from St. Pats through the 2012 graduating class of Mac. The job of a class captain is relatively simple – foster communication among your classmates. Through the use of technology today it has become much easier for us to stay in contact with acquaintances and good friends. Designated class captains would be asked to help the Alumni Board disseminate information about alumni and school events through e-mail, Face book, Twitter, etc. This assignment would not require you to attend our monthly meetings, instead we would stay in touch through email. Please consider volunteering to assist us in this endeavor. It is a great opportunity to give back and will require minimal commitment. If you are interested in assisting us with this please email me at triciadotson@gmail.com. We will be recognizing those who volunteer at the Homecoming football game and Alumni VIP tent on September 28th. If you are interested in becoming more involved with alumni activities and would like to join our board, please contact me as well. We are always looking for fresh faces who share a passion for McNamara. As mentioned, the Alumni Board is hoping to plan a couple of different social outings for our alum this year. Our first opportunity to bring friends and families together will be at the Homecoming football game. We will have a special VIP area designated for alumni and families. Please continue to check our link on the school website and plan on hearing about more gatherings and initiatives through your “class captain.” As always, we will continue to publish the Irish Update as this has been a valued communication tool. In this edition we are including an envelope and asking that you send a small donation in to cover the cost of publishing these Updates. Please consider helping us to defer these costs by donating $5.00 to $10.00. We look forward to seeing you at the Homecoming game and from hearing from “class captain” volunteers. This is going to be a great year for Bishop McNamara and our Alumni support is pinnacle in making that happen. In June Bishop McNamara bid farewell to four long-time faculty/staff members. Dave Raiche retired after teaching at Mac for 39 years. Besides teaching during that time, Mr. Raiche was Assistant Principal, Principal, and Guidance Counselor. DaVonna Wirth had taught at Mac for 23 years. Madonna Lambert Larsen was Administrative Assistant in the Guidance Office for 18 years. Rich Zinanni taught at Mac for 42 years teaching Business classes. He had also served as Dean of Students, Director of Development and Athletic Director. Mr. Zinanni will continue as Varsity Football Coach. ... and Welcome Jessica Turner Tracey Valant Shelly Travino Jessica Turner has been hired to teach Biology and Physiology. She is a graduate of Governors State University and this is her first year teaching. Jessica will also be assistant coach for both boys and girls soccer. Tracey Valant graduated from Illinois State University and will be teaching Honors Geometry, Math Analysis, Honors Algebra II and Trigonometry at Mac. Tracey has ten years classroom teaching experience and eight years as a private mathematics tutor. Tracey lives in Manteno with her husband and three children. After teaching at Kankakee High School for three years, Shelly Travino returns to Bishop Mac as Spanish teacher. Shelly lives in Bourbonnais with her two children. Chris Kirkpatrick is Mac’s new Athletic Director. Chris taught at Bishop Mac from 1999 until 2002 and moved E-mail: nliptak@bishop-mcnamara.org Chris Kirkpatrick Todd Yeoman Lamanda Garcia to St. Viator High School as Athletic Director. Chris lives in Bourbonnais with his wife, Julie, and 3 children, Georgia, and 6 month old twins C. J. and Kennedy. Mac Alum Todd Yeoman ‘06 has returned to his Alma Mater to teach Algebra I and Accelerated Algebra I. He will also coach freshman football and JV Baseball in the spring. Todd graduated from Olivet Nazarene University and lives in St. Anne. Lamanda Garcia teaches Physics, Physical Science and Geo Physics at Mac. She holds a Bachelor degree in Clinical Lab Science with a minor in Biology from Illinois State University, and a Masters degree in education from the University of St. Francis. Lamanda lives in Manhattan, Illinois with her husband, Mike, 20 month old daughter Aeryn, and an English pointer named Izzy. Annual Fund income is an important part of our school’s development and assures that as many students as possible will have the advantage of a McNamara education. Long time Building Manager Sherwood Adame passed away in 2011. Sherwood’s family designated our school as the beneficiary of his memorial which provided the following classroom and building needs: Celtic Society Reeds and Mallets for Band instruments Hot plates for Science labs Periodic table for Science classroom Projection screen for classroom Drill press for Maintenance Department $5000 or More The plaque pictured above has been installed in the cafeteria. Notes Jeanne Breault Keigher and her husband Pat attended “Windy City Live” at the ABC TV studio in Chicago and met Ryan Chiaverini and Val Warner. Jeanne and Pat live in Manteno. a 24 mile hike up the Maroon Bell Mountain. Ed and Michael each own a landscaping company, and Ed is a licensed Yoga instructor. Dan is the Night Auditor at the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek hotel. 1962: 1999: Mary Jo Toune Bennett lives in Carlsbad, CA and writes: “I feel I am very fortunate to have retired in San Diego after living in many states during Bob’s career. He passed away in 1999 due to heart issues. My daughters, 6 grandsons, 1 granddaughter and 4 sons-in law are all in San Diego and I am blessed to have them. Life is great. Hope to see you at the 50th”. 1973: Cindy Pilotte Marion and her husband William live in Jacksonville, AR where she is a manager at North Pulask High School. Ed and Dan recently completed Cari Meyer Irvin is getting married September 22, 2012 in Stafford Virginia to Anthony M. Pisoni. She notes that classmate Kayemee Rose Quiamco will be in her wedding. 2000: Emily Fisher-Gentry and her family travelled to London for the summer Olympics. Emily’s husband Matt wrestled for Canada in the Olympics and came in fourth. Matt was born in Oregon and has dual citizenship since his mother was born and lives In Canada. 2008: A.J. Liptak graduated from Bradley University in May with a B.S. in Computer Information Systems and a minor in Business. He recently began his career with West Monroe Partners of Chicago as an Integration Consultant.
