An Apple A Day Nor th Kansas City Schools Education Foundation 2013 Annual Repor t Cornerstone Award Our annual award gives recognition to a business or individual who provides outstanding support to the Education Foundation. The 2013 recipient deserves our thanks in more than a million ways! Major Saver Holdings, Kelly Osborn, Inc. partners with the Major Saver President Education Foundation and district elementary schools to sell discount cards for area restaurants and attractions. Since 1997, sales have topped $1,016,000. Nearly $600,000 has benefited our 21 elementary schools, while the Education Foundation has received more than $400,000. (816) 413-5004 www.nkcschools.org/foundation Letter from Our Chair Dear Friends, We’re all familiar with the phrase An Apple A Day. In North Kansas City Schools, it refers to the latest technology our district has embraced to transform teaching and learning. The Education Foundation supports the district’s efforts by providing funding for additional technology and other educational materials. The Dr. Dan Kahler Innovative Teaching Grants Program – named for the legendary Oak Park High School principal – began in 1996 when the Education Foundation was established. Since then, the program has awarded staff members 172 grants worth nearly $205,000. This school year, grants have bought iPads and apps to help English Language Learners read and speak, exposed elementary students to engineering and other high-tech careers, and purchased digital microscopes and organisms so high school students can do real scientific research. (See pages 2 and 3 for all Kahler Grant descriptions and photos.) For the first time, the Education Foundation offered $100 First-Time Teacher Mini-Grants to 89 staff members new to the profession. Teachers often spend several hundred dollars of their own money to buy items that welcome students back to school, brighten their classrooms and enhance their lessons. The mini-grants are designed to assist new teachers who are just starting their careers but may not have extra cash for school-related purchases. In addition to these grants, the Education Foundation gave $10,000 to support the district’s emphasis on literacy at the elementary school level and $20,000 to jump start a First Robotics Program at our four high schools. Graduates from the classes of 2013 received 49 scholarships totaling $45,000 – numbers that will increase substantially in 2014. (See pages 4 and 5.) As the Education Foundation grows, we plan to supply new sources of funding that directly impact achievement and prepare students for future success. Thanks to your generous support, the Education Foundation has attained $1.4 million in assets. With your continuing contributions, we look forward to providing students with even more Extraordinary Educational Experiences! Sincerely, Amy Jo Reid 2013 Education Foundation Chair 2 0 1 3 E d u ca t i o n F o u n d a t i o n A d v i s o r y B o ar d The Education Foundation Advisory Board consists of business, community, parent and district representatives dedicated to providing extraordinary educational experiences in North Kansas City Schools. He donated the initial gift for the program and How Do You Spell Science? F_U_N! Susie Helwig, North Kansas City High School Funds purchased microscopes and organisms for students to do real scientific research. They’re observing embryonic development and how it’s affected by environmental factors such as smoking, alcohol, pH levels and water temperatures. Students also are doing live chats with Stowers Institute scientists and a University of Missouri biochemist. Project RED 10 – Read Every Day for 10 Minutes Jeremy Bradham & Frank McMurray, Antioch Middle School This grant has helped instill a love of reading for students transitioning to sixth grade. Funds provided books, stopwatches, notebooks, pens and “I RED 10” T-shirts. During the summer, students spent 10 minutes reading and recording their thoughts. The program has continued during the school year. Reading with Heart from the Soul! Dana Miller, Topping Elementary School The principal’s car became a summer bookmobile and made weekly visits to three neighborhoods where students live. Grant funds purchased books to supplement their summer reading and help them build home libraries. When students received books, teachers gave them one-minute reading assessments, strategies for improvement and lots of encouragement. Rocketing Towards Relevance Barbara Madden, George Adair, Sara Brown, Melanie Davidson, Dawn Hefner, Bill Miller, Nick Persell, Kim Shelley & Greg Spiegel, Staley High School To make math relevant and interesting, students are reading Rocket Boys by Homer Hickam and blogging about math and its real-world connections. They plan to do a live chat with the author and watch October Sky, the movie based on the novel. We MUST READ (We Mustangs Using Summer Time Reading Electronically and Daily) Carol Sulack, Courtney Wheeler & Debra Williams, Bell Prairie Elementary School During the summer, the library was open one day a week so staff could help students select books for their reading levels and work with them on comprehension strategies. Students also tracked their at-home reading. Teachers are using iPads to record student progress. Winnetonka Parent PRIDE Andrew Schuerman, Winnetonka High School Led by a high school counselor, this seven-session workshop helped parents of teens address issues and problems they face at home with their students. The program will augment the high school’s existing positive behavior intervention model that encourages students to be prepared, respectful, involved, driven and engaged – Winnetonka PRIDE. provides ongoing support, along with payroll deduction contributions from district employees. (See back cover.) Since 1997, 172 Kahler Grants totaling $205,000 have been awarded to staff members whose creative ideas enhance student learning. For the 2013-2014 school year, approximately 3,300 students have benefited from $22,000 in grants. 2 North Kansas City Schools Education Foundation t eac h i ng G ran t s Engineering Is Elementary Julie Goldsberry, SAGE Program, Bell Prairie Elementary School Children naturally ask questions, take things apart, determine how they work and create their own designs. This program provided gifted students with engineering materials, allowing them to explore real-world applications. It also introduced them to careers in science, technology, engineering and math. ExcELLerate ELLs Through Technology Shelley Jastrzembski & Kim Elliott, Briarcliff Elementary School This grant has purchased iPad Minis and special applications for English Language Learners. The technology provides them with interactive, hands-on opportunities to enhance speaking and listening, as well as reading and writing. Linking Literature Shannon Shelton, Gracemor Elementary School Literature and math go hand in hand in this grant that has helped dispel the myth that math is dull, unimaginative and inaccessible. Grant funds have purchased story books that incorporate math concepts, giving students extra opportunities for reading, vocabulary and writing in math content areas. We Are at the “Core” of Common Core Cassie Fogel, Meadowbrook Elementary School Common Core State Standards establish a foundation for all schools across the U.S. and a framework to help students succeed. Exemplary text books targeted specifically for third-graders were purchased. The books steadily increase in complexity as students’ reading and comprehension improve. C u lt u re o f E x ce l l ence G ran t s Service Cadre Grant Shannon Tilsworth, Bell Prairie Elementary School School nurse Shannon Tilsworth won a $500 grant for finishing first in the school district’s employee recognition program for non-certified staff. She bought several first aid and medical items for her office, including “peanut allergy” bracelets that students can wear when they go on field trips. Teaching Cadre Grant Connie Van Engen, Bell Prairie Elementary School With her $500 grant for taking top honors in the school district’s recognition program for certified staff, music teacher Connie Van Engen purchased additional recorders for her fourth- and fifth-grade students. They now have bass, tenor and alto recorders to play as they learn basic music theory and concepts. www.nkcschools.org/foundation 3 Scholarships for Graduating Seniors 2 0 1 3 R ec i p i en t s Since 2004, the Education Foundation has awarded graduating seniors 184 scholarships worth $196,000. These Winnwood fifth-graders were anxious to begin reading the books they had personally selected a few weeks earlier. www.nkcschools.org/foundation www.nkcschools.org/foundation 55 Centennial Community Celebration • May 4, 2013 RUN NKC Schools 5K Despite less-than-perfect weather, nearly 2,000 people helped North Kansas City Schools celebrate its Centennial. The event at North Kansas City High School began with a Parade of Schools, followed by the RUN NKC Schools 5K. Activities included a free picnic, history presentation, school displays, music performances, a student art show, culinary demonstrations, face painting and children’s games. Four hundred people participated in the 5K, and nearly all designated a school to receive $5 of their registration fees. The 5K benefited the Education Foundation and PTA, PTSA and booster club organizations. Overall, the event raised more than $18,000. Schools received more than $2,900 of that total and also competed for the highest percentage of 5K participants based on enrollment. Northtown and Antioch took first in the high school and middle school competitions, earning an extra $250. There were four elementary school winners: Oakwood Manor ($250), Topping ($150), Chouteau ($100) and Clardy ($50). 6 North Kansas City Schools Education Foundation Financial Report J an u ar y 1 – December 3 1 , 2 0 1 3 Strong investment earnings from our partnership with the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation and strong support from our donors helped the Education Foundation top the $1.4 million dollar mark. Two fund changes were made in 2013. The Oak Park Future Teacher Scholarship was transferred into the 1913 Society Fund, which serves as an umbrella fund for several scholarships. At the same time, the Robert L. Dameron Memorial Scholarship Fund, which also benefits an Oak Park graduate, was transferred out of the 1913 Society Fund to become its own fund.
