Dear Iowa Credit Union Colleagues,
New Financial Education CDs
The Iowa Credit Union Foundation (ICUF) exists to help credit union members
in need of economic stability, whether they are under-banked, unbanked or living
on the financial margins.
ICUF partnered with its financial education consultant, Adam
Carroll, to launch a new financial education CD program in May
2012. Each CD is professionally created, covering four different
financial education topics targeting credit union members and
their children. Credit unions can hand out the CDs at their
branches, events and annual meetings.
With the fallout from the Great Recession still being felt, many families find they
are financially strapped. Additionally, estimates of families living in poverty continue to rise, meaning our work to help families build wealth, responsibility and
independence has never been more important.
Last fall, we reached out to credit unions and asked for you to help us “Plant Seeds
for the Future,” as we conducted our first major fundraising campaign in many
years. Even with tight margins, credit unions were extremely generous in their

so thankful and we believe ICUF’s work is centered in the credit union philosophy
of “people helping people.”

However, with the proper information and guidance, you may be able to set yourself up for
a lifetime of financial success. It’s not about how much money you make, but what you do
with the money you have!
The Foundation focuses on three strategic directives in order to help credit
union members and Iowans improve their lives. The directives include:
· Be the champions of financial literacy
· Provide tools for sustainable small businesses
Thank you for all you do for Iowa’s credit union system.
· Give all Iowans access to financial services
Thanks to financial support from credit unions and individuals,
ICUF provides a variety of grants, scholarships and programs.

The challenge is -- no one is teaching us the rules of how to play.
From the time we’re young, we learn very quickly how to become workers and consumers (in
fact, we’re GREAT at consuming). What we’re not being taught in schools is how to make
our money work harder than we do.
20s
To do that, we first have to have more money at the end of the month instead of more
month at the end of the money!
In Winning The Money Game, you’ll learn:
• Why it’s not important how much you make
• How to create an ongoing savings plan
• When to distinguish our needs from our wants
• The best ways to employ your money
• The consequences of poor money choices
• And MORE!

Some of the biggest purchase decisions of your life are made in your 20s and most
people are terribly unprepared. That lack of preparation can cause decisions to be
made that have very long-lasting implications.
Indeed, ICUF manifests what our system is all about. We hope the testimonials
you read throughout this report serve as proof of the value of your financial support and will encourage you to continue to support ICUF in the years to come.

During the 2012 Iowa General Assembly session, ICUF received
bi-partisan support for a change to the state law governing use of state
money for the Credit Union Family Partnership IDA Program.
Since 2009, the use of the IDA funds has been limited to IDA savers
who have been affected by a natural disaster with a Presidential
declaration.Because of this restriction, credit unions have only been
able to serve a handful of Iowans through the IDA program who met
this criterion.
Thanks to PolicyWorks and House Speaker Kraig Paulsen, during the
2012 session, the necessary changes to state law were approved by the
Iowa Legislature, allowing the funds to be used by anyone who met
the other criteria based on income and family size.
The measure was signed into law by Governor Terry Branstad and
became effective July 1, 2012.

Children’s Miracle Network (CMN)
CMN is a national non-profit organization dedicated to
improving the lives of children by raising money for more
than 170 children’s hospitals across North America and is the
“charity of choice” for credit unions. ICUF supports CMN
by taking in all checks from credit unions and making quarterly payments to CMN hospitals.

ICUF has helped hundreds of families and Iowa credit union
staff through grants and scholarships, matched savings and financial education. ICUF relies on individuals and credit union
donations in order to serve its philanthropic mission. This year
ICUF set a goal to reach $100,000. We exceeded our goal as of
August 22, 2012!
ICUF extends a heartfelt thank you to all who have donated so
far to ICUF’s 2012 Fundraising Campaign.
