Welcome to this
championship event
For more than 100 years, the IHSAA has enjoyed
being a part of the journey to adulthood for thousands
of young Hoosiers. Knowing that the student-athletes
we meet today will be the leaders of tomorrow, we are
grateful for the opportunity to help them as they learn
valuable life lessons through athletics.
Currently in Indiana, over 160,000 students from 411
different IHSAA member schools participate in high
school athletics. From our perspective, participation in
athletics is an integral part of the educational process.
At the IHSAA we believe
that the athletic arena is an
extension of the classroom.
The national organization
for high school athletics, the
National Federation of State
High School Associations
(NFHS) has used the slogan,
“Athletics, the other half of
education.” We believe that
is a very accurate adage.
There are many things to be
learned through athletics that may not be a part of the
regular classroom setting including lessons such as,
self-discipline, the value of teamwork, the importance
of dedication and commitment. Each of these can
have a dramatic impact on today’s youth as they
prepare to become the leaders of tomorrow. Whether
it’s their ability to deal with success or overcome great
adversity, the important lessons learned will last a
lifetime. Each experience helps shape who one is and
who they will become.
For an organization such as ours, integrity is of primary
importance. An uncompromising adherence to the
principles of fair play and impartiality form the core of
our value system.
We hope you are looking forward to the 2009-10
school year with the same anticipation and enthusiasm
as the IHSAA staff and Board of Directors.
Pure, wholesome, amateur, educational, inexpensive,
local high school athletics has always been the objective. It is what we mean when we say…Pure Spirit.
Pure Sport!
Cordially,
Blake Ress
IHSAA Commissioner

Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude Award
Patricia L. Roy
At the conclusion of each championship game, members of the IHSAA Executive Committee will present
the Patricia L. Roy Mental Attitude Award to the outstanding senior participant in each classification of the girls
basketball state finals. The recipients of this award, who were nominated by their principals and coaches, must
excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership and athletic ability in basketball.
A member of the IHSAA Executive Staff beginning in 1972, Ms. Roy was responsible for girls basketball from
the inception of the tournament series in 1976 until her retirement in June, 1999. Regarded both statewide and
nationally as a pioneer in girls athletics, Patricia served on the IHSAA Executive Staff longer than anyone in the
history of the Association.
Indiana Farm Bureau Insurance, IHSAA corporate partner, will present a $1,000 scholarship to each school in
the name of the recipient. Since 1989, over $680,000 in college scholarships have been presented by Indiana
Farm Bureau Insurance to deserving high school students in Indiana.

NO. 1 BEN DAVIS TOPS NO. 2 SOUTH BEND WASHINGTON
Sophomore Bria Goss banked home a driving runner
in the lane with 1.4 seconds left on the clock to give topranked Ben Davis a 71-69 victory over No. 2 South Bend
Washington in the 4A state championship game. The gamewinning shot turned away a furious fourth quarter rally by
Washington that saw the Panthers overcome an 11 point
deficit over the last 2:56 before Goss’ shot.
It was Ben Davis’ third state championship to go along
with titles won in 2000 and 2001 allowing them to finish
a perfect 30-0 and become the first girls team to win 30
games in a season.
The Giants finished their season ranked No. 1 nationally in USA Today. Washington, ranked fourth in that same
poll, settled for the runner-up spot for the third time in four
seasons. The Panthers were playing in the state title game
for the fourth straight year.
Senior guard Skylar Diggins scored eight of her gamehigh 29 points in the last 1:40. Her layup with :45 seconds
left tied the game at 69-69. She finished her career with
2,790 points good for third best in state history.
Ben Davis head coach Stan Benge, ranked seventh
among active coaches in victories, picked up career victory
468. South Bend Washington was led by first year coach
Maurice Scott who guided them to a 26-1 finish.
The second session of the state finals drew 13,449 for
a state finals record since 1998. The four games also drew
a state finals record 21,522 during that same time.
ELMHURST WINS ITS FIRST STATE CHAMPIONSHIP
The Fort Wayne Elmhurst Trojans defeated the Owen
Valley Patriots, 62-59, in the Class 3A championship game
to claim the school’s first state title in any sport. It came in
the school’s first ever appearance in the girl’s basketball
state finals. Elmhurst’s boys basketball team finished as
state runner-up in 2003.
Elmhurst came out strong in the first quarter taking a
quick 7-0 lead over the Patriots and ended the first quarter
with a 20-11 lead. The Trojans built their largest lead of the
game at 22-11 with 7:40 left before halftime. Owen Valley
rallied from that point pulling to within 28-24 heading to the
halftime lockerroom.
Owen Valley grabbed its first lead of the game with
6:20 left to go on Nickole Gonser’s layup to make it 47-45.
Twice the Patriots held three point leads before Elmhurst’s
Lecretia Smith hit a layup with 3:15 remaining and Rosie
Lewis’ jumper at 2:41 gave them the lead for good at 56-54.
Smith, who hit 11-of-15 from the field, led all scorers
with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Liza Clemons and Lewis
both added 10 for Elmhurst. Heather Gonser led Owen
Valley with 21 points and eight rebounds. Cooper chipped
in 10 and Nikole Gonser pulled down nine rebounds.
No. 4 Elmhurst, led by head coach Mark Redding,
finished the season 25-2, winning their last 11 games of
18
the season. No. 10 Owen Valley, making its first trip to the
girls basketball state finals, finished 24-3, under coach Tom
Anderson.

HERITAGE CHRISTIAN WINS FOURTH CONSECUTIVE CHAMPIONSHIP
Claire Freeman’s shot with :03 seconds remaining in
overtime gave top-ranked Heritage Christian a 60-58 win
over second-ranked Oak Hill for its fourth consecutive 2A
state title. The Eagles join Fort Wayne Bishop Luers (199902) as the only teams in tournament history to win four
straight championships.
Heritage Christian head coach Rick Risinger also
became the first coach in state history to win four state titles
– in just his fourth year in charge of the program.
With the score tied at 58-58 with 1:36 to go, Heritage
Christian ran the clock down to :07 left before calling
timeout to set up the final play which ended up in Freeman’s hands. Her running jumper that banked in proved the
game-winner and Oak Hill’s final heave fell short.
Courtney Moses led all scorers with 21 points and
Pickering added 20. Both finished with seven rebounds.
Heritage Christian (26-1) was making its fifth trip to the
state finals in six years and it was the second year in a row
it defeated Oak Hill (27-2) for the title. Oak Hill was coached
by Todd Law.
CANTERBURY EDGES RIVET IN OT FOR SECOND STRAIGHT TITLE
Canterbury’s Megan Pedro stepped up big in overtime
to help No. 7 Fort Wayne Canterbury to its second consecutive Class A state title with a 72-66 victory over top-ranked
Vincennes Rivet.
Pedro, who ended with 15, scored seven of the Cavaliers 10 points in the extra session picking up for the loss
of star player Tabitha Gerardot who fouled out of the game
with 25 seconds remaining in regulation. It was the first
championship game decided beyond regulation since 2000.
Canterbury converted 2-of-3 field goals and 5-of-6 from
the free throw line in overtime, while Rivet only connected
on one of its six attempts from the field during that time.
After Tabithat Gerardot’s fifth foul, Mallory Niehaus’ two
free throws gave Rivet a four point lead at 61-57 with :25
seconds remaining before Becky Pedro came on. On an
in-bounds play under the basket, Pedro passed the ball off
the back of a Rivet defender, scooped it up and scored and
was fouled on the play. She hit the free throw to draw the
Cavaliers within one at 61-60 with :13 seconds left. Next,
Rivet’s Sara Young was sent to the foul line and made the
second of two free throws for a two point advantage. Pedro
then hit a jumper with :04 seconds left to tie the game and
force overtime.
Gerardot and Cassie Kreiger led Canterbury with 18
points each while Becky Pedro finished with 15. Gerardot
matched her Class A state championship game record set
last year with 17 rebounds.
It was the 17th straight victory for Canterbury and
coach Scott Kreiger. The Cavaliers finished 23-4. Vin-
cennes Rivet, the smallest school to ever play in the girls
basketball state finals with 92 students and making its first
appearance, finished 23-2. The Patriots were coached by
Tim Young.
