NEWS
Professor Richard PERHAM (1955), our current
Chair of Governors has decided to stand down
in the autumn following our prize giving and
the opening of the new library and science
building. James GRAHAM (1976) will succeed
him as chair of the governors.
SPORT
MUSIC and DRAMA
Leilani Bellieni has captained the Latymer girls’ football team for
the past year and was selected to play in the Independent
Schools’ Football Association for Girls’ match against Australia,
held at Bewdley Town FC in the West Midlands in January.
This has been the boys’ soccer term and the 1st X1 enjoyed the
success of reaching two cup finals, the London Independent
Schools Cup (against St Pauls) and the Inner London County
Cup. Their last game of the season at Wood Lane was a 4-0 win
against an Old Latymerians FC X1, led by Lewis TOSEY (2006).
ACADEMIC
Sixth former, David Adamson has won a prestigious Rolls
Royce Scholarship to study mechanical engineering at the
University of Sheffield. David, who is currently studying A
levels in maths, physics and design technology, applied for
the scholarship having researched opportunities on the
website. 3000 applications were received, just 16 candidates
were interviewed and only 5 scholarships awarded. David
will share his time between Rolls Royce’s main engineering
works at Derby and the university. Rolls Royce will sponsor
his tuition and fees, pay him a salary, give him ongoing
practical training at their plant in Derby and guarantee him a
job on graduation!

EXTRA CURRICULAR
Each school vacation our students are lucky enough to
explore other countries on activity or cultural trips. This
Easter has been no exception with several groups travelling
to Venice, Hamburg, Nice, Berlin, Banyoles in Spain, or on
Duke of Edinburgh’s expeditions in the Lake District. Some
had their return flights severely delayed by the volcanic ash
and faced epic alternate return journeys.

The rugby squads have produced good results this season. Two
played for Middlesex RFU, Duncan Stirling for the U16s and Alex
Hodgkinson for the U17s. The senior players have been busy on
a variety of projects earning funds for the 1st and 2nd XV’s
South Africa rugby tour, set to depart in July.

skill by planning and planting
tubs, pots and beds around
the School site. Their
colourful and varied planting
schemes have enhanced the
school and help make this
part of Hammersmith much
greener. Thank you ladies!
The former parents group is
flourishing! Members attend a
couple of meetings each year
and many ask to receive
OLNEWS. As with Gay and
Nicky, many former parents
support the school in a variety
of ways, including our fund
raising. Several of them act as
the mailbox for our younger
members and report that they
read OLNEWS before passing
it on.
A capacity audience was treated to music
of the highest quality when Latymer held
its second spring concert at St John’s Smith
Square, Westminster. The evening was
largely choral, with a performance from
the Latymer Consort (the top choir in the
School) of Shakespeare songs and sonnets,
set to music by George Shearing. This was
followed by the Barbershop Sextet – a
group of six Upper Sixth boys who
performed a medley of specially arranged
music. Schola Cantorum (the girls’ choir)
and the Chamber Choir (the boys’ choir)
joined forces to perform Faure’s Requiem,
together with a small orchestra.
A successful new venture for
this group has been an oversubscribed short course on
history of art given by
Latymer’s legendary art history
teacher, Robert Orme. If you

interested in joining this group

STAFF NEWS
Four loyal members of staff retire this summer: Jim Clark
(known to many as their rowing coach) who is currently head
of design technology; John Wilson, the head of examinations
and a geography teacher together with his wife, Caroline, the
school nurse; and Colin Appleton, our librarian.

Malcolm Howe, who retired last year after eight years at the
school in our facilities support team, sadly passed away in
February after a fight with cancer. Pupils and staff alike were
very sad to hear this news as Malcolm was a popular figure
around School, always cheerful and happy to help.

OBITUARIES
It is with deep regret that we note the passing of the following Latymerians:
Michael William ANNEAR (1942) BVetMed MRCVS.
John Mervyn CARTER (1961).
Stanley George INNS (1936).
Jonathan Lee ALLEN (1998) BSc.
In late March Jon was on his bicycle on the
A338 in Wiltshire and swerved to miss a
huge 15 ft water-filled pothole and fatally
collided with a lorry. He was a Captain in
the 1st Battalion, Royal Regiment of
Fusiliers; his unit paid tribute to the
“energetic and utterly professional officer
with a bright future ahead of him”. He had
recently worked as an instructor at
Sandhurst but prior to that he had served
in Cyprus and then survived two tours of
duty, fighting the Taliban under fire in
Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Currently
he was an adjutant to his regiment.
At Latymer Jon rowed in the 1st Vlll and was a popular sixth
former. After School he read human health and exercise at
Oxford Brookes University. Our deepest condolences extend to
his parents and family, his girlfriend and other friends.
Stewart Gilbert CAMPBELL (1940) BSc.
His wife Dorothy informed us of the death of Stewart, aged 87.
He had gained 1st class honours in engineering from King’s
College, University of London and worked from 1942-45 in the
Royal Aircraft Establishment. This was followed by a brief spell
an assistant lecturer at the University of Glasgow. Before joining
the Safety in Mines Research Establishment in 1957 until his
retirement in 1983 he worked at the National Coal Board’s
Central Engineering Establishment.
Charles George DEWEN (1941).
George was taken ill whilst with his wife on a cruise liner at
Colombo and died in hospital there on March 5. He had served
in the Sick Berth Branch of the Royal Navy 1944-47and then
with the ambulance services of Watford Borough, Hertfordshire,
Middlesex and Nottingham; He became the city ambulance
officer in Nottingham before being the county ambulance
officer for county Durham from 1963-85. He was the deputy
county organiser for the WRVS, in Co. Durham from 1986-94
and was a member, of the Social Security Appeal Tribunal from
1988-94.
Soon after leaving school he was active in the OLA putting
together the printed directory and circulating it to members.
Michael LEHR (1961) MA FCIMA.
Mike was a widely known and
popular Latymerian. At school he
was involved with choral music
but also developed a love for
guitar and rock’ n’ roll. He had a
rock group that performed in the
Jantaculum as “Gildniks”. Mike
was also Regimental Sergeant
Major in the school CCF.
From Latymer he went up on an
Exhibition to read mathematics
at Trinity, Cambridge after which
he briefly taught maths at
Latymer. At Trinity he joined the
Jesus chapel choir and a
university rock band – “The
Golden Blades”. These two
musical strands came together
in the Cambridge Twentieth
Century Church Light Music
Group, which led Mike to

writing contemporary guitar-based Christian music, which he
continued ever since.
His career was as a management accountant with the Lucas
Group, the London Graduate School of Business Studies and the
EMI Group record division, rising to Finance Director and then
MD. He subsequently took on roles in the NHS and local
government, but found these frustratingly bureaucratic. His first
two wives died very young and he is survived by two daughters
and his third wife, Mary Kay. His late brother David (1963) was
also at school but sadly died in his 30s.
Raymond Harry DOBSON (1950) MB ChB FFARCS.
Harry studied medicine at the University of Birmingham after
reluctantly leaving a Latymerians’ cricket tour to attend for
interview. After national service as a Surgeon Lieutenant in the
Royal Navy, he eventually became a consultant anaesthetist at
Dudley Road (later Birmingham City) Hospital. He died in
December 2009 after a very brave battle with multiple myeloma.
He had once captained Moseley Golf Club.
John DRYSDALE (1947).
John died suddenly at his home in Nerja, Spain on January 1st.
He was the elder brother to Bruce (1948) and Peter (1951) to
whom we extend our condolences.
John transferred to Latymer from Woking Grammar School in
the fifth form. He represented Latymer at soccer and athletics
and after his national service played football for the Old
Latymerians for over a decade. In 1949 he joined HM Customs
and Excise, retiring in 1984. He married Evelyn in 1966 and they
had a son, Jeremy.
Leonard Andrew DUNCANSON (1945) BSc PhD.
Andy died last August; he was often in contact with the
Latymerian Office yet sadly we hold no biographical information
on him, but he told us recently that he had, “too many wartime
memories to list. They covered evacuation to Taunton, then
Slough, before returning to Hammersmith in time for V1 and V2
weapons. I have respectful memories of many members of staff
- particularly the headmaster Freddy Wilkinson. They were a
worthy bunch who were prepared to let us develop many
school activities.”
Mike FERN (1963).
Mike died June 2009 aged 64, after a 5-year battle with stomach
cancer. His funeral in Stratford-upon-Avon was attended by his
widow Ann, children Victoria and Andrew, friends and family
including long-term great friends Roy BILLINGHAM (1961) and
Chris CLARK (1963).
Mike graduated after school from Brighton CAT and was chief
soils engineer with Wimpey Construction working all over the
world. After living in Dubai for some time he was poached by
Gammon Construction and worked in Hong Kong as their soils
engineer for many years before retiring to Stratford-upon-Avon.
Apart from his work and family, Mike’s main claim to fame is
being an avid collector and hoarder having scoured second-hand
shops, municipal dumps and, latterly, e-bay since starting at
Latymer in 1955! He amassed one of the finest musical record
collections to rival any Latymerian. Other collectible
eccentricities included second-hand cars and spare parts, Ann is
still trying to dispose of 37 second-hand car tyres!
James Richard GALE (1949).
Jamie died in February at his Spanish home and is survived by his
wife, Pauline.
Michael John GILBERT (1958) BSc.
Michael latterly lived in Worthing and had had a career in
livestock and managing estates, but later he had owned auction
rooms.
Victor George GUEST (1934) BSc.
During WW11 Vic was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in
the Middlesex Regiment and rose to the rank of Major. His
subsequent career was in the gas industry in the search for
North Sea oil and he was responsible for drawing up agreements
and licences, retiring in 1983. He had once proudly recalled to
us the day when he broke the school U15 sport record, on the
2nd June 1933.
John Leslie Copinger HARVEY (1938) PhD.
John served in the RAF during WW11 and then took up teaching
at Portsmouth Polytechnic, lecturing in geology and geography.
He lived in Yelverton, Devon and died in February aged 88yrs.
Charles Ernest HOWICK (1942).
Charles was at school from 1936-42 and he then worked for the
Inland Revenue from 1942-1984, retiring as their assistant
director of personnel to live in Worthing with his wife, who
survives him. He was always involved with the OLA.
William Howard MEACOCK (1933).
In WW11 Bill was a staff sergeant in the East Africa Pay Corps.
After the war he worked as an administrator at Royal Masonic
Hospital and for the Performance Rights Society, music services.
He died in October 2009, aged 93.
Frank PITTMAN (1934).
Frank was brought up in Hammersmith,
the youngest brother of three, the eldest
being Alan (1928). The family ran a
successful butcher’s and meat business in
the Broadway, they used the field behind
Doddington House, their home in Lime
Grove, to graze cattle.
His ability in art at Latymer earned him a
place at Goldsmith College where he
trained as a teacher specialising in
history, English and PE. With a world
threatened by Fascism, Frank felt it his duty to challenge
and this meant confronting the Black Shirts on London’s streets,
fundraising for the Basque children, refugees from Guernica and
Bilbao, and volunteering in 1939. He served in the Middle East in
the Intelligence Corps and Royal Signals.
Frank was a writer and poet and died in Poole Dorset aged 93
and is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rosario, and their
children Rafael and Helen. Following a postgraduate course at
London University and a long career rising to headmaster, he
and Rosario enjoyed a well earned and idyllic retirement by the
coast in Poole, Dorset. He had some of his poems published
nationally and was a member of the local literary society.
Norman Frank RAPSON (1950).
Norman died in 2009 after a long decline with dementia and
will be much missed by his loving wife, Sylvia.
Peter W REEVE (1946).
Peter was a founding member of the School’s 1624 Society. By
leaving a gift to Latymer in his will he expressed his strong
support for the School’s means tested scholarship programme,
which he believed helped to maintain the social mix at Latymer
which is so important to preserve. His career in civil aviation was
with BOAC then with East African Airways and finally as London
and South East sales manager for Swissair. He and his wife, Anne
lived in Guildford.
Edward David ROBERTS (1941) BSc.
Edward became a junior chemist with J Lyon & co and was then
conscripted in to the Royal Navy, where he became a radio
mechanic Petty Officer. He was known at school as Robbie or
Bobby. After the war he gained a chemistry degree from the
University of London and worked for British Oxygen before a
thirty year stint with Philips Electrical. During this time he
presented papers at international conferences in the USA,
Europe and in the UK on aspects of resistors for electron
lithography. He was married for 30 years and a widower for 30
years. He retired to Purley in 1985. At a recent reunion he
recalled his school days with great affection, especially his early
chemistry lessons that hooked him for life! When the school
was evacuated, but he and friends had moved back home he had
a clear memory of travelling daily from his home in Ealing to the
school in Slough on the GWR.
Clive James STEARNES (1962).
Whilst at school Clive became a senior prefect and was both
captain of the 1st X1 cricket team and played for the 1st X1
football team and he played 1st team squash and badminton
and rowed and threw javelin for the school.
He went on to study physics at the University of Sussex
graduating with Honours. He joined ICI for a short time, before
moving to the industrial manufacturing company BTR where he
worked for 26 years. He progressed, as it grew to a
multinational conglomerate, to the position of Group Chief
Executive. He later worked for the TI group and finally for
Unipart as the Executive Chairman for NRS (National Rail
Supplies).
On retiring, he followed up his life long love of sailing, acquiring
a couple of yachts and qualifying as an ocean yachtmaster. He
was diagnosed with cancer late in 2008 and sadly died in January
2010. He leaves his wife, Julia, two children, Mark and Helen,
and four grandchildren.
MAX TURNER (1995) BSc.
Max, who died suddenly in December age 33, was a founder
member of the Lyric Posse. After leaving Latymer, he spent time
travelling before studying psychology at the University of
Durham and he then worked in IT for a range of companies
including Virgin Media. A keen advocate of rights for disabled
people, Max put his skills and experiences to valuable use as a
media volunteer for Changing Faces, an organisation challenging
the world view of facial disfigurement.
He had lately started writing and performing standup on the
London circuit with considerable success. Max was passionate
about so much – football and especially his beloved Queens
Park Rangers – good books, satire, architecture and interesting
buildings, theatre – he had learned to love Shakespeare and
above all he adored words. Max was equally passionate about
things he didn’t like – small
mindedness, injustice, petty
officialdom, discrimination
and while sometimes he was
prepared to see the funny
side of things and to turn
them into material for his
stand up either on stage or
in real life, he also took
them very seriously. Max
gave so much to all of us;
the world is a dimmer place
without him.
Keith Irving TWYNAM (1939).
Keith completed his national service in the RAF and had held a
successful career in the civil service.
Paul Sotiris VAFIDIS (1942).
We have learned that Paul, of Ashford, Kent, died some years
ago. Paul read geography at St Catharine’s College, Cambridge.
Denis William WOOLLEY (1938) DFC DFM.
Denis thirty-year long career in the Bank of England concluded
as a senior manager, one of the three principals of exchange
control. During World War 11 he was an officer in the RAF who
went on to become an expert in all forms of more sophisticated
electronic navigational equipment including radar. He was
decorated for his bravery with both the DFC and DFM for his
part in thirty three missions on Germany as a navigator and later
with a tour of operations in the Pathfinder Force as a Flight
Lieutenant and as the ‘master bomber’, bringing his mission tally
to 58.
Denis married Mary in 1949 and enjoyed their diamond wedding
in January 2009 with all their family and friends. His many years
of happy and fulfilled retirement in Chipstead were spent
gardening, following cricket and playing bridge. Dennis had
always been a keen member of the Pathfinders Association and
had been on the committee since its formation. He frequently
marched with them past the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday
and as President in 1997 he laid their wreath.

The date following a member’s name refers to their ‘year of leaving,’ which doesn’t always equate to ‘Class of’
– (many members belong to more than one ‘Class Of’ due to either ‘removes’ or fast streaming).
A thank you from the School to Leigh STOPS (1964) for his
service on the Latymerian Council, which had to end last
autumn due to his work commitments. Leigh was a founder
member of the council and his contribution was invaluable.
Michael FULFORD (1964) is a sport and leisure management
consultant. He kindly sent us photos and notes of his lower
school play, The Anxious Hen and his summer 1959 3B
school report, with its summary by his young form master,
Hilary JONES (1970) was one of the celebrity contestants
on TV show, Dancing on Ice this year. Hilary appeared in five
live shows before being voted out after the dreaded ‘skate
off’.
Fred VINE (1957). Fred’s year on the school staff preceded a
distinguished career in marine geophysics where he is
credited with work around plate tectonics; he became a FRS
and is Emeritus Professor at the University of East Anglia.
Edwin NISSEN (1999) is now a post-doctoral research
scientist at the department of earth sciences, University of
Cambridge. His research involves using satellite
measurements and field observations to study earthquakes
and tectonics, and has taken him all over the world; recent
areas visited include Mongolia, Iran, Turkey and Greece.
ANDY MEIRA (1995) is an architect leading a social
responsibility unit within a large international practice. He
specialises in delivering sustainable, appropriate and lowcost design solutions to those who would not normally
benefit from architecture. Currently he is developing postearthquake transitional and permanent settlements in Haiti
through the Clinton Global Initiative and sustainable ‘offgrid’ schools for the Malawi government, and a pioneering
AIDS/HIV centre in India.
Jonathan FLETCHER (1985) heads up a golf and spa resort in
Madeira Island (www.palheiroestate.com). Luckily Palheiro
Estate was relatively unscathed during the recent heavy
storms in Madeira. Jonathan reports that the clean-up is
well underway and looks forward to welcoming Latymerians
on holiday in Madeira shortly.
Ian FOX (1963) is a retired hydrologist living in the Scottish
Borders; his last post was with the Scottish Environment
Protection Agency.
In his retirement John LOMAX (1963) is doing some part
time teaching and acts as a parish clerk; formerly he was,
until 1998, the Headmaster of Kirkbie Kendal School.

Ziggy LUBKOWSKI (1983) has been awarded the 2009
Shamsher Prakaash Prize for Excellence in the Practice of
Geotechnical Engineering for his work in geotechnical
earthquake engineering.
Eric PHILLIPPS (1965) is general manager of QuKazakhstan
and has his own geophysical consultancy.

Michael HELLYER (1958) worked for the Canadian High
Commission and since his retirement in 2004 he has been a
trustee for the Foundation for Canadian Studies in the UK
and is a correspondent for The International and Urban
Studies Trust.
Professor Paul WHITE (1967) is now the Pro ViceChancellor for Learning and Teaching as well as a professor
of geography at the University of Sheffield.
Dr Stewart CARNALLY (1999) is currently writing a novel
having recently completed his contract as a postdoctoral
research associate at the University of Cambridge, working
in biomolecular imaging using atomic force microscopy.
We congratulate Marwan MIKDADI (1991) on his
appointment as deputy head of Bancroft's School from
September 2010.
In January TFL Transport Commissioner Peter HENDY (1971)
received an honorary doctorate of science degree from the
City University where Professor Julius WEINBERG (1972) is
Acting Vice-Chancellor.
Professor Jim SMITH (1972) has become a governor of the
Latymer Foundation – the School’s governing body. Jim is
Chairman of the Wellcome Trust and has a chair in
biochemistry at Cambridge.
David LYSCOM (1968) addressed the School governors in
January on the current debate about charitable status of
independent schools. David is Chief Executive of The
Independent Schools’ Council.
Joel SUTTON (1992) is sales and marketing director at
Welltech Ltd. Sacha HTAY (1995) is business development
manager at Winmark Ltd.
Ollie RAPHAEL (1986) is CEO and owns Delicious Digital
Ltd; he was formerly an executive producer with the BBC.
Ed GROOMBRIDGE (1982) is MD and owner of Resourcing
Associates. Farley BALASURIYA (1982) is a consultant at
Nestlé and owner of Questor Systems, based in Basel,
Switzerland.
Brian BRADER (1964) is a Cambridge science graduate who
turned consultant in 2005 after a civil service career spent
mainly in the Ministry of Defence with some time in both
the Government Office for Science and HM Treasury. For
the last 4 years, he has led the Good Practice work stream
for the Government Horizon Scanning Centre. He manages a
futures analysts’ network and a strategic futures coaching
programme, and provides advice and support to
Government departments in developing evidence-based
strategic futures analysis. He also works closely with the
King’s College (London) humanitarian futures programme.
Dr Alex BLACKMORE (1995) is practicing medicine as a
specialist registrar in general surgery at the North Western
Deanery.
Mark ROZYCKI (1983) lives in Warsaw, Poland and is chief
executive officer of GeoPost Central and South Eastern
Europe. Laurence HOPKINS (1992) is now an MD at Morgan
Stanley.
Dai JAMES (1966) retired in May 2008 after nearly forty
years in public service with Wales Gas, the Welsh Office,
Welsh Assembly Government and finally the National
Assembly for Wales Commission. Most of his time was
spent as a statistician, researcher and research team leader.
Nicholas BENEDICT (1980) is the recently-appointed CEO
of Lumavita. He has extensive international leadership
experience gained over 17 years in the pharmaceutical and
biotechnology industries. Most recently, Nick was head of
commercial strategy and operations at the Swiss specialty
anti-infectives biotechnology company, Basilea
Pharmaceutica. He was formerly the COO of Novartis UK
and head of the worldwide business unit in primary care.

The School hosted the 50th Anniversary celebrations for
Hammersmith Morris Men last summer and rather
belatedly we have now acquired a photo of some of the
Latymerians who attended. In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s
under the leadership of then head of art, Bob Lobley there
was a Morris dancing club at Latymer, which is how some
of those photographed became involved.
Chris MOONEY (1992) has become Editor of BBC’s Top
Gear motoring programme.
Sebastian KNAPP (1995) appeared in two films last year,
Sand Serpents and High Plain Invaders and he has just
recently finished making Forest of the Damned 2.
Rob LANE (1983) is one of the most versatile and sought
after composers working today. Rob has won six major
awards for his work and received nominations for a further
eight. Three Ivor Novellos, a BAFTA and two RTS Awards
have all confirmed his ability to write distinctive music for
any genre. Rob's score for Elizabeth I, starring Helen Mirren
and Jeremy Irons, received a BAFTA, a RTS Award and an
Ivor Novello Award!
Recent film credits include the comedy, Mrs Ratcliffe's
Revolution, The Lives of the Saints, the South African
thriller Red Dust and two documentary features: Aileen:
The Life & Death of a Serial Killer and Game Over:
Kasparov & The Machine. He produced an Emmy
nominated score for Longford.
Sade keyboardist Andrew HALE (1981) has been busy of
late as the band launched its album Soldier of Love in
February as only the sixth studio album released during
their 25 year career, and the first since Lovers Rock in 2000.
Nicky JHOOTI (1997) [the singer Jay Sean] released a
single in February, Do You Remember from the album, All
or Nothing. During a recent GMTV interview he recalled
many happy memories of his time at Latymer and
especially mentioned Dr Hardy, his form tutor.
John CHUDLEY (1953) as a tenor and a semi-pro singer, he
formed a small choir which existed for twelve years and
made three appearances on local TV. John was also active

John TACKLEY (1949) is a member of the River Weaver’s
Anderton Boat Lift Trust. His wife, Bernice, was
commissioned to paint an impressive mural, which was
unveiled at the boat lift on 26th March. Having met at the
Manchester Latymerians’ gathering (see alumni events) Keith
ELLIOTT (1966) and his wife Lin went to Bernice’s exhibition
associated with the unveiling. Later, whilst giving a lecture at
Manchester University, Keith arranged to meet with Mike
TSO (1967) for a drink. They had also met at the
Manchester gathering. They were joined by Professor Tony
FREEMONT (1970) and all three ended up in the pub
reminiscing!

Roger TABOR (1963) chairs the professional accountant in
business committee of IFAC. Formerly a FD of Post Office

Latymerians …
Ken WOOLCOTT (1930) has rummaged through his files
and found some interesting certificates he received for
good performances he gave for his garrison in the 1945
season of the Moascar cricket league. Together with press
cuttings relating to the highly successful Old Latymerians’
soccer club’s season of 1938-9 when they won both the
Old Boys’ Cup and the Southern Amateur League; Ken
scoring an impressive 50 goals! The side was skippered by
the late D.H. CALDICOTT (1930). Ken, now at 93yrs reports
he is less agile now though he is best known for
introducing popmobility, which evolved into aerobics. Here

the championship tier of the League of Gentlemen at Barn

(all 2004) play for West London Phoenix FC in the Chiswick
& District Sunday League. They won the Feathers Cup this

Three old friends met up in The Dove on Boat Race day, the
first time in 44 years and clearly had a good time. They
were (pictured LtoR) Bruce MARTIN (1966), Bill
GOODYEAR (1967) and Craig HITCHCOCK (1966).
Adam GOLD (1975) we apologise for describing David as a
lawyer in the last edition of OLNEWS. He is, in fact, a
management consultant specialising in behavioural change.
He is a certified coach and operates both as an independent
consultant and as a partner in Cypseli LLP.
Joel WOLCHOVER (1990) is a lawyer working for the Law
Commission.
Captain James JENNINGS (1998) after a long posting in
Brussels is now an adjutant with 26 Engineer Regiment,
based in Tidworth, Wiltshire.
The School Art Department’s Then & Now exhibition that
ran from last November until January, marking ten years of
the Latymer Arts Centre, showcased the work of forty
Latymerians. We featured some of their images in the last
edition.
Amongst those who exhibited were: Dan KIMERLING (1994)
who is a freelance graphic designer and cabinet maker and
another freelance graphic designer and painter, Fergus
QUINN (1994). Freddie CASSEVETTI (2003) who is a
freelance designer and photographer, and Luke CASSERLY
(2000) who is a professional photographer. Jason AHMED
(1994) who is a senior architect with Grimshaw. Ed
SHINTON (1998) is now working with architects, Roland
Cowan.

Matt KEVILLE (2007) played for Loughborough University
against UWIC in the BUCS Final at Twickenham on Wed 21st
April. Loughborough won 35-27. Matt who was playing fly
half had an assured game and contributed 15 of
Loughborough's points. Matt has also been playing regularly
for the Students in rugby’s National League 2 North where
Loughborough are currently top of the table and looking for
promotion to National League 1.

Dr Paul SCHUR (1966) and his wife, Tripta, undertook a
canoe trip down the River Thames to raise funds for the
Royal National Lifeboat Institution in September, from
Lechlade to Hammersmith Bridge where Latymer pupils
helped them disembark on to the school’s jetty. Paul has

Technology in Wales.
Old Latymerians FC plays in the Southern Amateur League
(SAL) and are based at the Laymerians’ grounds in Wills
Crescent, Whitton. Club chair, Don MAUGHAN (1953) or
the secretary, Chris BULL (2002) would be delighted to
hear from any members interested in playing soccer next
season. As reported elsewhere Lewis TOSEY (2006) is
bringing together recent leavers, especially those who have
just graduated, to play together in an OL FC team. You can
contact them via the club website or the Latymerian
Office.
Don reports, “This season proved to be a rather uninspiring
as all four SAL teams finished mid-table, with no side
having
a long cup run. The veterans side continues to be very
successful and next season will see the club organise a
veterans league for sides in the SAL.
The annual match v School saw the school winning, but
most importantly from the club's point of view was that
our X1 was drawn from a squad of fifteen players that left
Latymer recently.”
We are reliably informed that, Will SMITH, Nichal SETHI,
Jamie LISTER, Frazer COMLEY, Harry TRUSSELL and Luke
TIERNEY (all 2007), Lewis TOSEY, Jeevan SAGOO, Simon
ANDERSON, Charlie WILD, Nick SEE and Seb SINGH (all
2006), Simran SAGOO (2003), Dan BEAN (2005) and Fred
TRUSSELL (2006) will all be playing in ‘OL’ colours next
season, which will hopefully be the start of a regular influx
of Latymer’s leavers in future seasons.

Regard Partnership. Caspar STOPS (2004) is working at Sing
Tel Europe as a business development manager.
the staff remembered with affection are, most notably, Will
Sharp, Fred Mayo, Mr Wilkinson and Mr Parish who are
consistently highly regarded, but some other masters are
accused of hurling chalk or blackboard rubbers. Surely not!
We have also heard many unbelievable exploits in science
labs that would fall short of current health and safety
regulations, and even stories of masters distilling alcohol!
As one reader put it, “all pretty normal for the times!”
Aspiring actor Alex ROE (2009) has been working in the
School’s PE and games department as part of his gap year;
he was in an episode of Jam and Jerusalem as Jennifer
Saunders’ son last year.
Michael DEANS (1965) remembers from his school days,
his peers re-labelling all the chemicals! Then of Mr Parish
distributing vegetables and ‘Bill and Ben - the biology
men’?!
Jitesh LAD (2003) has completed his law conversion and has
been travelling, but starts work with Hammonds in Leeds
this summer.
Picking up the thread from earlier newsletter editions,
Gerry BURT (1942) on harvest camps, circa1940, at
Haddenham, near Slough he writes: “I can remember being
there with Barry CLOTHIER (1942) and being introduced
to the power of half a pint of rough cider (scrumpy)!!”
Marek TARKOWSKI (2002) has been working as an editorial
director for a media company publishing socio-economic
reports for the New York Times, The Independent and the
Wall Street Journal. Last year he was in Papua New Guinea,
Malaysia and Saudi Arabia interviewing heads of public and
private sectors including CEO's of energy companies and
prime ministers and presidents.

Izzy LADBON (2002) is working for a healthcare ad agency
having graduated from Edinburgh in biological sciences with
honours in immunology.
Rachel von SIMSON (2002) is studying medicine at King’s
College. Dr Rohit RAO (2002) is currently working at the
John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Ona SUMNER (2004) is
working at the University of Manchester.
Memories
Many memories arrive in the Latymerian Office and sadly
we don’t have space to mention all of our contributors, but
some of the very common themes that emerge from these
accounts are the CCF, Wood Lane, the Jantaculum and Gild,
34th Hammersmith Scouts and ‘Activities Week’. Amongst
“Evacuation was a marvel of logistical organisation - kids
being cleared out of the big cities in 2 or 3 days, and our
parents not knowing where we were going until they got a
card from us a few weeks later. We marched from school
to Ravenscourt Park station a day or two before Sep 3rd
then a special train to Wimbledon, another train to
Windsor, and finally a fleet of buses scattering all of us to
various villages around South Bucks.
Billeting was a matter of luck - I landed up in a
stockbroker's house in Gerrards Cross for a few months
before the school was put together again in the old girls'
secondary school at Slough. My billet at Slough was a
move from the sublime to the ridiculous, and we were
soon moved from there to a more acceptable one.
I, too, was in the ATC (15F) and remember spending a few
days at RAF Wyton, and lying at the end of the runway
while a squadron of Lancasters took off over our heads on
nightly bombing raids over Germany. That was quite aweinspiring, and a memory that lives with me now.
Like most senior boys, I took my turn at fire watching at
nights against incendiary bombs (with a master on hand). I
remember returning to my billet one morning with
scorched trousers - but later admitted that it was caused
by an electric fire not a bomb! “
Michael HURSEY (1960) suggests an interesting idea to
enrich our archives, “a general appeal for reminiscences,
but confined to a side of A4.” [We fully support that idea,
please start emailing them!]
Michael believes he was the first to leave school to read
drama, at Bristol University in 1960; can any one challenge
that? He went on to teach drama and later, as a head
teacher in the 1980s, he created a performing arts
department that mounted productions based on Wilky’s
‘MAD’ evenings. In his retirement Michael is a JP and a
member of the Parole Board.

Michael played Sir Andrew Aguecheek in an open air
production of Twelfth Night at Latymer. This was produced
by the legendary masters, Colin Turner and Wilf Sharp in
the garden of Rivercourt House. Michael’s stage entry
entailed climbing over the wall from the Headmaster’s
house (now Latymer House). Fellow actors included Roger
GARTLAND (1962) as Viola, a part that must have
launched his lifelong career in professional theatre, some
of it at the National. Robin FAIRHURST (1959), an
established operatic star at the time, played Feste and a
young Alan RICKMAN (1964) was an attendant. Alan’s
autobiography records that on the last night Colin Turner
stood in for a boy who had twisted his ankle – that was
Michael! Robert CUSHMAN (1962) a theatre columnist of
The Observer now on Toronto’s Post was Fabian and
painfully crushed Michael’s fingers during an incident.

suggesting the identity of a couple of the athletes on the
photo provided by the widow of John SWALES (1940) on
page 6 of the last edition. Eric COPSON (1941) went one
better and named everyone! They were back row LtoR:

where and when, parades twice a year in the Cromwell
Road. Current members travel from as far away as Canada
and Scotland. To re-enlist, please contact Cadet WOII

re-training will be provided, without the previous
disadvantage of an alcohol ban. As this is an elite body of
troops, those below the rank of L/Cpl need not apply and
it would be an advantage to have been back-yeared
academically at LUS. Originally formed as the ‘Fledgling
Army’ run by the late Lt Col Tom STEWART (1931) (or
STRAF for short), it consistently fails to meet its own poor
standards and therefore, LUSCCF Needs You!”
Eric recalls he and John Swales were founder members of
the air defence cadet corps at school and learned to fly
gliders together.
Peter JERROME (1951) remembers collecting bus numbers
being an obsession for form 2A when he joined in
September 1948. He has sent us some wonderful vignettes
of his masters including Parish, Treacher, Stollery, Major
Stewart and Rev Cann, and charting his school career.
Assembly notices often included rants received from
members of the public about unruly behaviour out of
school. Wilkinson was the Head, “In those days
headmasters had a license to moralise and perhaps they
still have?”

told the memories and the pinot grigio flowed freely, your
editor has been asked to promote a group of members that
after attending the CCF Reunion in 2006 resolved to meet
up regularly. Here is their submission:

event was held at the end of February at Exeter College and continued

Last summer Charlie BEN NATHAN (1990), David Cox and Sam Hole,
all members of Latymer Upper School staff, cycled the 900 miles from
Land’s End to John O’Groats, to increase awareness and raise funds for
the Shooting Star Hospice and Latymer’s Annual Fund for means tested
scholarships, both of which significantly enhance the lives of young
people in west London.

form he was diagnosed
with a rare and incurable
form of cancer. Sam’s wish
was to help others. In his final days Sam cycled 26 miles for charity
despite being seriously ill. As a fitting tribute to their son, the Scotts
set up the Octopus Challenge, raising funds for Cancerbackup and
Shooting Star Hospice through sponsored cycle rides and,
subsequently, other events. Since its inception many Latymer staff and
pupils have been actively involved with this fantastic cause.

The Latymer Annual Fund is a yearly campaign that, since its inception
in 2005, has so far been able to support seven means-tested
scholarships for bright and promising children whose financial
circumstances would not otherwise allow them to attend the school.
Its goal this year is to have raised enough by the end of the campaign
in August to provide this life-changing opportunity for three more
bright and deserving children. Reaching this goal will bring the number
of Annual Fund scholars at Latymer to ten. Thank you to all of you
who have helped make this possible!

The Annual Jog
The first Sunday of March this year
heralded the first signs of spring. A
sunny day after such a tough winter
and made an ideal setting for the
Geriatric Jog. The field gathered to
pound round the river following the
‘Briault Cup course’, well worn over
the years by countless pupils.
Guy BOWLES (1980) once again led
the pack; finishing in 25m 22 secs,
followed by Jerome CHEUNG (2002)
18 seconds later. David HOOLE
(1981) made a welcome reappearance this year to finish third.
The rest were spread out over the
next 20 minutes, with Barry DORN
(1950) as sweeper. A good crowd of
supporters cheered them on, some
taking the opportunity to walk
round the river, before everyone
gathered at Auriol Boat Club to
enjoy the sun on the balcony or the
comfort of their lounge.
Barry is the organiser and received
the usual long list of apologies;
sadly a number were suffering from
anno domini, clashed commitments
or injuries. However, new faces were
evident this year including Chloe
MANN (2000), Jacob HAYLER (1996)
and Mike PERCIK (1967). Next year
the jog will be Sunday 6th March.

February 21st. Just over twenty
members and their partners
braved 8cms of snowfall early

Some of our alumni events aim to bring together those who have
a common interest or similar careers and are valued as an
opportunity to network as well as to enjoy a social occasion. The
City and Legal Reception was aimed at those working in financial
and legal areas. Around a hundred members attended the event
held at the Cass Business School part of City University after work
one Monday evening in early February.

Max LESTER (2005) is working at an arts organisation called
Eyebeam in lower Manhattan which specialises in making interactive
software and robots as an art form.
Lewis DRUMMOND (2005) is an entrepreneur international IT
consultant who set up his first company, Saint Servers whilst in the
Lower Sixth. Now based in New York he is a graduate of NYU Stern
and he has launched FledgeWing and the Soho Park Group; he was
European IT Director for MySpace for two years.
Kamaljit JHOOTI (1997) [aka Jay Sean] continues to take America
by storm. The singer who in October reached number 1 in the US
Billboard charts with Down, which attracted over 4 million paid
downloads, has since been featured in numerous magazines and
appeared on many TV chat shows and has now released another
single, Do You Remember. Jay lives in New York but visits London
frequently.
Joe CLEVERDON (1999) is a private yacht captain for two families
who live in Newport, Rhode Island for the summer and the Bahamas
in the winter. He married Samantha Quinn eighteen months ago.

disruption. They took the
opportunity to meet up
with Ken ADAMS (1979) and Jamie GRANT (1976) and their wives
to see Alan RICKMAN’s (1964) Broadway production of Creditors.
Mark BULLIMORE, Rory CURTIS, Richard DAVIDSON, Michael
FREEMAN, Bill MARCHBANK, and Ron PHILLIPS, as well as by David
BAINES and David GODFREY, who both served on the US Latymerian
Council, and by the School’s former development director, Jennifer
Evans Casey, who now works at Dartmouth College.
We thank Peter WORSLEY (1948), Dr Jo O’CONNOR (1965) and Prof.
Harry GEDULD (1950) for their period of service to the US Council.

Ridley College from Ontario performed Goldoni's comedy, A
Servant to Two Masters in the School’s Edward Latymer Theatre on
March 7th as part of their tour of schools around England.
Latymer also had a visit in April from Cathy Ramsay, daughter of
the late Donald RAMSAY (1940) an eminent scientist who was
latterly based in Ottawa. Donald himself benefitted from a
scholarship to Latymer from 1933 to 1940. He then went on to
study at Cambridge and to a 60 year career in scientific research on
an international level, winning many awards and honours along the
way. He was a member of the 1624 Society and left a
generous donation to the Latymer foundation in his will, in
recognition of all that his Latymer education enabled him to
achieve in his life. His kind gift will be used to help fund a free
means tested place at Latymer for a child as able as Donald.

Nick GARRETT (1992) has arrived
in Auckland, NZ to become MD of
Colenso BBDO, a very successful
creative ad agency. He previously
had been based in Sydney.
Greg DORN (1986) was featured last November in
his local Queenstown (NZ) newspaper, Mountain
Scene. Apart from reporting on his acupuncture
practice the story revealed that Greg had almost
ripped Nicole Kidman’s dress off her! This occurred
whilst he was a film extra making the war epic
Australia. He accidentally stepped on her dress
during a dance scene, causing a re-shoot and, if
you watch the dance hall scene in that film, Greg
is the army officer seen glaring at Hugh Jackman.
Peter CRISPIN (1963) recently visited his daughter
nr Wellington, NZ and took the opportunity to
meet up with John RUDD (1962) who lives in
Tauranga.

Coralie FERNANDO (2002) is a
recruitment consultant with PKL,
in Melbourne, Australia.
A gathering of Latymerians spent an extremely
pleasant Sunday afternoon in the Swan Valley on
the outskirts of Perth, Western Australia on 21st
March. Those present were Anthony TEMPLEMAN
(1962), Malcolm LYNE (1976), John FISHER (1978)
and Terry BALL (1949).
Trevor JONES and his wife, Gwen, also entertained Trevor’s former
class mate, Richard SANDS (1955) and his new bride, Miroslawa, to
dinner during Richard’s recent Canadian holiday. They met at The
George on the Green in Toronto where Jimson BIENENSTOCK
(1982) is the General Manager.

The US Latymerian Council makes
way for ‘US Friends of Latymer’
The functions previously performed by the US Latymerian Council
have been assumed by the board of directors of U.S. Friends of
Latymer Upper School, a recently formed not-for-profit corporation.
The original members of the board of U.S. Friends, Jamie GRANT,
Ken ADAMS, and David TALBOT, are being joined by new members

Among many topics discussed was a proposed
'gathering' of West Australian Latymerians during
the visit to Perth by the Head later this year. The
opportunity was also taken to bid farewell to
Malcolm who has been recalled to San Diego,
California somewhat earlier than anticipated after
he re-located to Perth last year.

Alistair WATKINS (1994) married Victoria Harris on the 12th
December 2009 at Coombe Manor. Alistair tells us they had a
fantastic time, “and our 6 month old son, Rowan, also seemed
to enjoy himself! There were loads of Latymerians there
including fellow classmates, Jim FRAYLING as best man, Ade
AYENI (both 1994) and Peter BENJAMIN (1995) as two of the
ushers.” Alistair is re-training to be a secondary RS teacher.
Ramesh BALAKRISHNAN (1993) and wife, Rebecca had a
baby girl in October, named Zara. She joins their other
daughter Amber who is now 5. Ramesh works in human
resources for Morgan Stanley.
