MOHONASEN CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT 2016-2017 CALENDAR T PEC S E R THY A P EM ON USI L C IN NG NDI A T ERS ENT UND WERM N O O E M P E R AT I P Y COO IBILIT X E FL CE IEN L I S RE DE ITU T R FO & A Culture of ACCEPTANCE ADAPTABILITY Mohon is A culture of ACCEPTANCE & ADAPTABILITY We believe it is our collective responsibility to model and teach about character in our schools. It’s why this year’s calendar focus is Constructing a Culture of Acceptance & Adoptability. What does that mean? It’s about creating an environment that encourages respect and inclusion, fosters cooperation and flexibility, nurtures understanding and empowerment, and inspires resilience and fortitude. It’s a challenging task – particularly in a world increasingly divided by differing beliefs. And it’s not something we can do alone. It requires every single one of us to be involved: administrators, teachers, parents, students, bus drivers, cafeteria workers, board members, community members … you get the idea: It starts with us. Author and motivational speaker Wayne Dyer once said, “When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind.” We believe that’s a great place to start. Throughout the year, we’ll be using #ItStartsWithUs to share activities and programs that demonstrate our focus on constructing a culture of acceptance and adaptability. We hope you will take a moment to follow the district on Facebook and Twitter, if you don’t already do so. You’ll also find a sample of district efforts highlighted in this year’s calendar. Please join us as we work to create a kinder future for all. Together, we can all make a difference in our schools and in our world. www.mohonasen.org S U N D AY M O N D AY T U E S D AY W E D N E S D AY T H U R S D AY F R I D AY S AT U R D AY 1 2 3 When the Center for Advanced Technology at Mohonasen opens its doors in September, students will have access to a variety of modern, high-tech laboratories and classrooms. Through a unique partnership among Mohonasen, Capital Region BOCES and area institutions of higher education, students will learn by doing – and meet high school graduation requirements at the same time. Students will be empowered to create their own futures, gaining important technical skills and knowledge as they start down a path to a college degree or industry certification. Symbolically, the partnerships establish a culture of sharing, adaptability and collaboration as key skills to be successful in the 21st century. #ItStartsWithUs Marching Band Mini-Camp, 12-5 p.m., Main Field STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY Registration deadline for Oct. 1 SAT Exam and Subject Tests 4 56789 10 STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY CLASSES BEGIN Marching Band in Albany Labor Union Parade Kindergarten Orientation for Students & Parents Mohon Masque Fall Drama Informational Meeting, 10th Period, HS Auditorium ACT Exam Marching Band Mini-Camp, 12-5 p.m., Main Field Mattress Sale, sponsored by Mohonasen Music Parents, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Draper Cafe NO SCHOOL LABOR DAY 111213141516 17 Fall Bottle Drive, sponsored by Mohonasen Music Parents, 7-11 a.m. Mohon Masque Fall Drama Auditions, 3-6 p.m., Black Box Theatre Mohon Masque Fall Drama Auditions, 4:30-7 p.m., Black Box Theatre Grade 2 Open House, 6:30 p.m. at Bradt Board of Education Instructional Presentation, 7 p.m., HS Farnsworth Technology Center Pinewood Instrument Orientation, 6:30 p.m., PW Cafeteria High School Picture Day Eid al-Adha Fall Modified Sports Begin Draper MS Picture Day High School Picture Day Registration deadline for Oct. 22 ACT Exam Grade 3 Open House, 6:30 p.m. at Pinewood Marching Band Competition, Home Show Grade 1 Open House, 6:30 p.m. at Bradt (begins at sundown) 18 1920212223 24 Grade 4 Open House, 6:30 p.m. at Pinewood Grade 5 Open House, 6:30 p.m. at Pinewood College Application Kick-Start for Seniors & Parents, 6:30 p.m., HS Computer Labs 26, 27 Kindergarten Open House, 6:30 p.m. at Bradt Homecoming Marching Band Competition, Oswego Fall Begins 25 2627282930 Watch for a brochure about Fall STEM Programs coming home over the next two weeks! From learning about new technology to reviewing curriculum changes, teachers continually gather information that can improve understanding. One area of professional development focus for 2016-17 is poverty. We are trying to understand the district's changing demographics and the implications for student needs and classroom instruction so we can adapt our practices and attitudes to accept students where they are. One important approach in our professional development sessions is collaboration. Teachers meet regularly to find ways to help students connect the dots between the classroom and the real world. They model flexibility by working together between classrooms or across departments. #ItStartsWithUs SM TW T F S 123456 7 8 910111213 14151617181920 21222324252627 28293031 2 9 3 4 Board of Education Instructional Presentation, 7 p.m., HS Farnsworth Technology Center Parent Orientation for Incoming Kindergartners, 6:30 p.m., Bradt 5 Varsity & JV Winter Guard Competition, MYCGC Championships 6 Family Fun Fair/Invention Convention, 6-8 p.m., Draper Middle School Varsity Winter Guard Competition, WGI World Championships, Dayton, OH (through April 9) 10 11 4th Quarter marking period begins, Grades 6-12 HS Select Music Concert, 6:30 p.m., HS Auditorium 12 13 Draper Student Recognition Breakfast, 8 a.m., Draper Cafe 23 NYSSMA Elementary & MS Band & Orchestra, Bethlehem 14 15 3rd Quarter Report Cards available online, Grades 6-12 NO SCHOOL GOOD FRIDAY (begins at sundown) Easter ACT Exam NYSSMA Elementary & MS Band & Orchestra, Bethlehem Passover 16 8 7 Registration deadline for May 6 SAT and Subject Tests Graduation Speaker Contest, HS Auditorium Palm Sunday 3rd Quarter marking period ends, Grades 6-12 17 18 19 20 21 NO SCHOOL NO SCHOOL NO SCHOOL NO SCHOOL NO SCHOOL SPRING BREAK SPRING BREAK SPRING BREAK SPRING BREAK SPRING BREAK 24 25 Board of Education Business Meeting, 7 p.m., HS Farnsworth Tech. Release of Student Directory Information From time to time, student directory information is published on the Mohonasen website, in school publications or released to the media to recognize student achievement or depict activities within the Mohonasen School District. Parents who object to the disclosure of their child’s directory information should notify BOTH the superintendent of schools and their child’s building principal – in writing – on or before September 15 of each school year. For more details, see the “Release of Directory Information” notice on the district website at www. mohonasen.org. Asbestos Management ing pests with minimal impact on human health and the environment. Pesticides are only used as a last resort; however, it is possible that they may be needed periodically. Following state law, Mohonasen maintains a list of staff and parents/ guardians who wish to receive notification when certain pesticide applications are used. If you would like to be added to this list, contact Joe Mayo at 356-8228. More information, including a notification request form, can be found on our website. Closings and Delays Closings, such as an unplanned early dismissal, are communicated via an automated phone messaging system to all phone numbers parents have provided. Please note, the district does NOT use the automated phone system for snow day announcements. Closings, as well as snow day announcements, are posted on the web at www. mohonasen.org and on Facebook, sent out via e-mail/text message through School News Notifier (SNN) and are also released to all local TV stations and major radio stations. No matter what grade level, make sure your children know what to do if they arrive home unexpectedly and you’re not there. For safety’s sake, now is the time to create a plan. Dignity for All Students Act New York's Dignity for All Students Act seeks to provide the state's public school students with a safe and supportive environment free from discrimination, intimidation, taunting, harassment, and bullying (including cyberbullying) on school property, a school bus and/or at a school function. The Act includes, but is not limited to, acts of discrimination, bullying and harassment based on a student's race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sexual orientation, gender (defined to include gender identity or expression), or sex. Each Mohonasen school has a Dignity Act Coordinator (see box) trained to address issues in areas protected by the law. See more at www.mohonasen.org. As required by the EPA, school districts must annually notify parents/guardians and employees of the availability of the asbestos management plan and planned or in-progress inspections, re-inspections, response actions, and post-response actions. Mohonasen conducts periodic surveillances every six months and a re-inspection every three years. The Mohonasen management plan is available for review during normal business hours by contacting Joseph Mayo at 356-8228. There are currently construction projects scheduled that will disturb asbestos containing building material. Pursuant to the federal education legislation No Child Left Behind, Mohonasen must disclose to military recruiters, upon request, the names, addresses and telephone numbers of high school students. The district must also notify parents of their right, and the right of the child, to request that the district not release such information without prior written parental consent. Parents (or students 18 or older) wishing to exercise their option to withhold their consent to the release of the above information to military recruiters are asked to sign and return a form, which is available in the high school office.
