June 2016
It was a bittersweet Sunday as we gathered to send
Rev. Robert and Lisa off to their new church home.
Rev. Robert will be the Priest at All Saints in Smyrna.
They have made an indelible mark in our hearts and
they will be a part of our parish family always.

The Knit Wits gathered for lunch
at Alice Travis’s lake side home
before going on summer hiatus.
This new ministry has already
made and delivered many beautiful prayer shawls. They will
resume their gatherings in the fall
at 10:00 am every Friday.

St. Philip’s Episcopal Church THE BASKET
Dear Friends,
Summer is upon us! Christian Ed for adults is on hiatus for a
few weeks, but I expect a new offering to appear on the horizon: Centering Prayer. This focused, peaceful, contemplative
practice can be transformative especially for those of us feeling caught in too-fast, too-furious lives. Stay tuned for more
details and the start date.
Children’s Sunday School is also on hiatus for summer, but
the playground is open and available for an after-coffee break
on Sunday mornings… or any time! Watch for a new installation to come in the future – Junior Warden Ben Rice is exploring options for fun new play equipment designed for our
toddlers and younger children! There were funds left from
our last play equipment purchase and install so we’re going to
put that to good use.
Watch for a Stewardship program we’re planning on bringing
to you. No, I don’t mean a pledge drive – that will come, as usual, in the late fall. I’m talking about
the theological idea of taking good care of ALL that God gives us. The Canons of the Episcopal
Church charge the Rector of a parish to discuss, in addition to the biblical standard of the tithe for
financial giving, Christian stewardship thus: “reverence for the creation and the right use of God's
gifts, and generous and consistent offering of time, talent, and treasure for the mission and ministry of the Church at home and abroad.”
There are opportunities open NOW for you to do something new at church or, if you haven’t offered your talents before, to do so in one of these areas of real need: Lay Readers, Lay Eucharistic
Visitors (who take communion to those who are homebound or assisted-care-bound).
Adults are needed who would like to offer a series of classes in September: we’re hoping to offer
short runs of classes on topics of current interest (what are some of the topics that are difficult to
talk about that we SHOULD talk about in church?) or a short Bible study.
Most of all, we’re looking for a crew of about 6 to 9 who are called to teach children’s Sunday
School. If you hadn’t noticed, we have a LOT of children in our midst. They don’t all come up to
the step on Sunday mornings for the “Children’s Word”: some are a little too old and prefer to
help with Children’s Church or stay in the pew; some aren’t ready to make that walk up the aisle;
some don’t come regularly because we don’t offer a class to suit their age group. That last statement needs addressing: we need to offer age-specific classes here for the first time in several years!
Hallelujah! So we’ll need at least 3 Sunday School classes to offer age-appropriate material and activities for the many wonderful young people here. Is that you?!
I hope you find fullness of life through your worship, fellowship and social justice activities at St.
Philip’s. Your kindness, friendliness, compassion and acting-out of gospel living are what let others
know we are Christians: they’ll know us by our love, eh?

Pat Rowlett and Anne Bush perform at TPAC
with the “Tap N Dolls”
Anne Bush and Pat Rowlett performed to a full house with the Tap N Dolls at TPAC’s Step
into the Light show held on Friday and Saturday night during the Memorial Day weekend. They danced in four numbers – Everything Old is New Again, One More Last Chance,
Broadway Baby and I Love the Night Life.
On Sunday, May 1st, after our church service, we all gathered for a
special dedication in Dimmick Hall in loving memory of Al and Okie
Magee. Their children, Mike and Cathy Magee McCord are pictured
here with a new plaque that reads: On this day, May 1, 2016, we dedicate The
Rev. Deacon Al and Mrs. Okie Magee Memorial Chancel also known as The Magee Theater. Deacon Emeritus Al taught, prayed, and served well. Okie welcome all and spread the
joy of Christ well. Together, they reached out to draw all into the loving arms of Jesus the
Christ.
We were so happy to have so many of the Magee family present:
Mike, Cathy Magee McCord, her husband, Thom, and their children:
Becca and Andrew. Okie’s sister-in-law and nieces and nephews of
the Magee family were present.

A WORD FROM YOUR TREASURER
In a word THANKS! Thank you very much to those of you who have brought
your pledges up to date - and especially to those who continue to give more
than pledged. This extra effort put us back in the black for the year. A couple of reminders; just because you go on vacation, our church expenses do
not. And, while we have recently been blessed with some very significant
gifts to our Endowment Fund, the investment earnings from these funds are
used for non-budgeted expenses - predominantly capital repairs & improvements - and have no impact upon our everyday expenses. We are dependent upon your individual contributions to fund our fixed expenses.
Speaking of giving; we have several ways to financially support St. Philip's,
in addition to cash and checks (which work just great;)
Many parishioners have their donations sent directly from their individual
bank on a regular basis (see your bank for instructions,) or take advantage of
our electronic giving service (VANCO - see website www.stphilipsnashville.org - for details) for regular and/or special contributions.
We now are also able to offer giving via TEXT. If you forgot your checkbook, or want to contribute to a special offering (Rector's Discretionary Fund,
emergency relief, etc.) Simply send a text to 615-933-5283 with the amount
you would like to contribute. Make sure to include the dollar sign before the
amount. Example: $25. Within a few minutes, you’ll be sent a text with a
link to register. Click on the link and enter your cardholder name and credit
or debit card information. Once your registration is complete, you will receive a text verification and a receipt via email. For future giving, simply send
a text with the amount you wish to give, and it will process automatically!
Joe Dickerson
Thank you again for supporting the work of St. Philip's in our lives and in
our neighborhoods.
If you haven’t gotten to
see it yet, Judy Woodruff has interviewed
our Presiding Bishop:
The Most Reverend
Michael Curry. You can
find it on YouTube or
PBS online.
It is about an 8 minute
interview—and we
think you will find it
very uplifting.

SERVING GOD THROUGH SERVANT HANDS
SECOND HARVEST EFB (Emergency Food Box)
Summer is a great time to visit the EFB located at St.
Philip's. We're open on Monday mornings from 9:00 to 11:00
a.m. (we receive a delivery of food from Second Harvest,
donations from the community, get things ready for the week,
and serve clients). There are a variety of things to do even for
children. Contact Pam Foster or Linda Grace if you need more
information or would like to volunteer.
CHRISTMAS
IN JULY
Each year at Thanksgiving and Christmas the Donelson-Hermitage
community comes together to provide holiday food for Second
Harvest clients. Something extra at Christmas is filled stockings for
children. On Monday, July 18th we will gather to inventory all the
items we've been collecting for those stockings. Plan to meet at
about 11:30 a.m. in Dimmick. The work goes pretty quickly, and
there's lunch after. Please contact Pam Foster if you can help with
this activity.
SHOP FOR A CURE MARKETPLACE
The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life (scheduled for Saturday, October 1st at Charlie
Daniels Park) is having a "vendor fair" at St. Philip's on Saturday,
August 6th. Our building will be filled with vendors of all types from
jewelry to crafted foods to specialty items. St. Philip's will be
sponsoring a Thistle Farms booth. We have a growing list of vendors,
but let us know of anyone who might want to participate. All the
proceeds from the "rental" of the booth space will go to the
Relay. Contact Pam Foster or Janet Fox for more information.

Our Pat morris has been nominated for 2016
Individual Volunteer of the Year award for
the Tennessee health care association!
Pictured here are Cindy Wise
and Pat Morris playing guitar
and singing every Tuesday, all
day, at McKendree. Cindy has
been doing this for almost 30
years. Pat joined her after he
was released from
McKendree, where he was a
patient (not expected to get
better). Pat is a walking miracle—now that he is well he is
determined to help others.
When he is not playing and
singing, Pat is also a frequent
Lay Eucharistic Visitor to
McKendree.
This award honors an individual who best exemplifies the ideal nursing home
volunteer. Sure sounds like PAT! Way to go!
