The Procession, including the new graduates and diplomates, will leave the hall. (The congregation is requested to remain standing until the procession has left the hall) 7 DISTINGUISHED TEACHER AWARD The Distinguished Teacher Award, given once only to an individual, recognises teaching at any or all levels by a member of the faculty that has made a significant and lasting impression on students. Previous recipients in the Faculty of Commerce have been: 1986: 2001: 2006: 2008: 2009: 2011: DE Kaplan (GSB) N Nattrass (Economics) J Burns (Economics) LC Smith (Economics) CJ Fourie (Education Development Unit) T Low (Statistical Sciences) The following member of the Faculty of Commerce has been chosen for this award in 2013: Paul Maughan College of Accounting Paul Maughan teaches in the College of Accounting. He was one of the main drivers behind the introduction of a capstone course, Business Analysis and Governance, for the Chartered Accounting stream, designed in response to the new competency framework of the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants, and developed to enhance the pervasive skills, or what UCT refers to as ‘graduate attributes’, that this curriculum aims to provide. The Head of College of Accounting notes that the course is an outstanding success; in his 20 years at UCT he had never seen undergraduate students engaged to such an extent with a single course. This success is largely as a result of Paul Maughan’s ability to challenge students to deal with the business world and to encourage them to participate, by using a variety of novel teaching methodologies that included: a mergers-and-acquisition project where students compete in groups; a JSE share trading competition, using real companies as case studies; and the explicit promotion of pervasive skills. At the final 2012 lecture, where winning teams gave an ‘idols style’ presentation he was given a standing ovation by the class. The course has garnered much positive informal feedback from parents, partners at accounting firms and others about how relevant and useful the students found it. A fundamental insight which underpins Paul Maughan’s teaching philosophy has been Ken Bain’s view that effective teaching results in deep learning, and that it is best achieved through disruption of existing mental models. If students can be quickly confronted with the fact that they do not have the necessary mental models to deal with a scenario, they are more receptive to learn, and more likely to retain that enhanced mental model. He wants his students not only to learn the tools related to finance and accounting, but for them to have an awareness of the tools that other disciplines offer. That he succeeds is exemplified by a student who wrote: “Teaching isn’t just being able to give out content but for me it’s a lecturer that is able to stir me up to learn, read and have passion for learning more, and Paul exhibits all these qualities.” Another noted that “had it not been for the introduction of this pivotal course at UCT, I and my peers would not have understood what is was we spent four years studying or how powerful and valuable that knowledge was to the world”. 8 NAMES OF GRADUANDS AND DIPLOMATES An asterisk * denotes that the degree or diploma will be awarded in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and implications for the Khomani San in South Africa Johane Dikgang received his BCom and MCom degrees from the Department of Economics at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2005 and 2008 respectively. He joined UCT’s Environmental Policy Research Unit (EPRU) as a Junior Research Fellow in 2008 and enrolled into the PhD program in Economics in 2010. Johane Dikgang’s thesis focuses on the land claim by the Khomani San and Mier communities on the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. The key challenge facing the Kgalagadi area is how to balance conservation and beneficiaries’ rights to land and natural resources. His thesis has three objectives. First, he assesses whether land restitution has helped reduced poverty. Second, he investigates the value that the Khomani San assign to modern conservation under various land tenure arrangements. Third, he determines whether there is scope to generate additional revenues which could then be shared with the Khomani San. His results indicate that land restitution does not have any impact on poverty reduction. However, the Khomani San can be trusted to be good environmental stewards and there is scope to generate revenue for sharing with them. His thesis concludes that conservation schemes in the Kgalagadi area must involve the Khomani San to be successful. Supervisor: A/Professor E Muchapondwa (School of Economics) Mamello Amelia Nchake Thesis Title: Product market integration in developing countries Mamello Nchake has a BA in Economics and Statistics from the National University of Lesotho and a MSc in Economics from the University of Zimbabwe. Prior to commencing her PhD, she was employed as a lecturer at the National University of Lesotho. Mamello Nchake’s thesis analyses the extent and determinants of product market integration in emerging economies in Southern Africa, with a focus on Lesotho. It draws upon a unique database of monthly consumer prices at the retail level. The thesis provides deep insight into price setting behaviour of retail outlets in Lesotho and challenges the validity of existing economic theories used to model pricing behaviour in emerging economies. The results also reveal that product markets in Botswana, South Africa and Lesotho remain segmented despite trade and monetary policies to enhance integration. Finally, through exploiting distinct policy changes in Botswana’s monetary policy, the thesis is able to identify that closer alignment of exchanges rates and interest rates are effective in increasing the integration of product markets. Supervisor: Professor LJ Edwards (Economics) Susan Lynne Snyman Thesis title: High-end ecotourism and rural communities in southern Africa: a socio-economic analysis Susan Snyman obtained her BBusSc in Economics from UCT in 1997. Subsequent to that she spent 17 years working with rural communities in areas adjoining southern African conservation areas. Her work in Addo contributed to her obtaining her MBusSc in Economics from UCT in 2009, and provided the foundations of her doctoral research. Susan Snyman’s thesis focuses on the implications of eco-tourism for communities working in, and living near, conservation areas and high-end ecotourism camps in six southern Africa countries. She interviewed over 1800 rural households in order to establish the incentives that matter most to these communities; how ecotourism affects household incomes, and the determinants of community attitudes to conservation and ecotourism. The findings highlight the importance of ecotourism employment, formal education, livelihood diversification and family employment in conservation or ecotourism in determining rural household incomes, but also identify such problems as human-wildlife conflict and the potential instability of tourism related earnings. The thesis argues that eco-tourism’s benefits to households are not simply pecuniary; a steady, permanent income from the employment it offers allows households to broaden their asset bases and their sources of income. It also highlights the importance of understanding and managing community expectations in achieving long term sustainable relationships. Supervisor: A/Professor A Leiman (School of Economics) 13 Byela Kokueleza Tibesigwa Thesis Title: An economic perspective on the influence of social interaction on risky behaviours Byela Tibesigwa holds a BA and MA from the University of Botswana. She has been a PhD candidate in the School of Economics under Commerce Faculty since 2007. During the course of her PhD journey and as a junior research fellow in Environmental Policy and Research Unit (EPRU) she has been part of various research projects. Byela Tibesigwa’s thesis makes an empirical investigation into the role of social interaction on risk taking behaviour. The thesis consists of three self-contained papers, each with the aim of unearthing the overall theme. Two risks are investigated, with the first being sexual behaviour associated with the risk of HIV infection, and the second relating to crimes of social behaviours. The first paper analyses the influence of social norms and social pressure on multiple partnerships. The second paper examines the role of expected health and the contextual effect of health uncertainty on risky sex. The third paper assesses the influence of social disorganisation on contact and contact related crime. In general, the thesis finds social interaction to be significant in influencing risky behaviours and this appears to be the case for both men and women and between the Eastern and Southern Africa region. Supervisor: Associate Professor M Visser (School of Economics) In Information Systems: Salah Kemilembe Kabanda Thesis Title: E-commerce and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in least developed countries: the case of Tanzania Maureen Cynthia Tanner Thesis Title: Social conditions leading to scrum process breakdowns during global agile software development: a theory of practice perspective Salah Kabanda has a BCom(Hons) in Information Systems from the University of the North West, and an MSc in Computer Science from the University of Zululand. She has been studying at UCT in the Information Systems Department since 2008, having joined the department as a lecturer in 2007. Salah Kabanda’s thesis examines how E-Commerce is typically made sense of by Tanzanian SMEs and how the sense making is produced, sustained and affected by environmental and organisational conditions. A phased approach to data analysis is adopted – firstly thematic analysis is used to report on SME owner’s experiences and meanings. Secondly, the theory of communicative action is used as a complementary analytical approach. Finally structuration theory is employed as a lens to interpret the findings. Findings in this study show that SME owners for the most part view E-Commerce as merely having a static web presence that acts as a marketing instrument of the organisation, coupled with the significant use of the mobile device. SME owners frequently use mobile technology, but engage in limited use of websites as they draw upon their understanding of websites as being incompatible with Tanzanian sociocultural beliefs. Websites are nevertheless perceived as a platform from which they could continue to build a sophisticated image and advertise/market their products. A problem-solving practice with foreign partners is also enacted through social networking websites, with the purpose of mitigating most of the local web based E-Commerce challenges. Maureen Tanner has a BEng(Hons) degree in Computer Science & Engineering from the University of Mauritius and an MCom in Information Systems with distinction from UCT. She has been conducting her doctoral research and working as a lecturer in the Information Systems Department of UCT since 2008. Maureen Tanner’s thesis examines the social and contextual factors influencing the practice of distributed agile software development within the Global Software Development context. Empirical, qualitative, and critical in nature, her study employs multiple case studies. The analysis is undertaken through the lens of Bourdieu’s Theory of Practice. Maureen Tanner’s study proposes an elaborate discussion of the complex social processes within distributed agile teams. She reveals the resource constrained games of communication at play within the teams, the innovative nature of software projects, agendas, objectives and political aspirations of participants, and perceptions of various stakeholders of distributed agile projects. She concludes from her findings that distributed agile software development is innovative in nature and requires some degree of improvisation. She further proposes that practitioners should be reflective while using so-called industry “best-practices”, as the context of use, and participants’ characteristics, past experiences, internal values, and beliefs, influence agile work practices.
