While it was two different journeys that brought them together, Lauree
and Irv now find themselves at the same crossroads in life. “We are both
thinking of our future,” says Lauree, “and Sinai Residences has attracted
us for a number of reasons. Foremost, we want to make these important

Welcome to Chai Life
A New Dawn for Our Jewish Community
As our season draws to a close, you have once again brought the
words Feed, Protect, Teach, Inspire, Save and Comfort to life. You
have responded with generosity and compassion. And we couldn’t
be more proud or grateful.
Yet something new and exciting is also among us. You can feel the
exhilaration on our campus, at meetings, on missions, at events and activities, as we greet each
other and work together. It’s been building since our women roared into the Big Apple last Fall with
the largest delegation from outside the NYC area at the International Lion of Judah Conference…
through the joyful, moving Sandler Family Major Gifts Event…to THE EVENT, a community-wide
celebration that brought together 500 people from synagogues, partner agencies, schools and
beyond, from seasoned leaders to newcomers.
The momentum kept building as our season culminated last month at Israel Fest 65, where
nearly 3,000 people saw, heard and felt our vibrant Jewish diversity. All ages, backgrounds, and
neighborhoods joined together to celebrate the miracles of our homeland and showcase our
collective resources and talents. The pride and love were palpable — for Israel, for our people — and
for our own Jewish community.
It’s nothing short of a transformative revitalization of our community coming together to care for
each other.
Our recent 2013 Annual Meeting looked back on “An Epic Year,” and envisioned a bright future for
our community. Our Annual Campaign and endowments are up. We’ve launched new initiatives
for everyone from, infants to major donors. There’s no doubt that our efforts are indeed building a
stronger community. We extend deepest thanks to a few key leaders who are moving on after helping
us reach this juncture: Joseph Mishkin, Campaign Chair; Stephen Mendelsohn, Planning & Allocations
Chair; Betty Kane, Chair, Israel & Overseas; and Rabbi David Steinhardt, who chaired our JCRC.
Another promising development for the campus and the Federation is Sinai Residences, the
luxurious state-of-the-art Continuing Care Retirement Community, that is moving toward
construction on the north campus. We look forward to having new neighbors in 2015. Learn more at
www.sinairesidences.com or call 561.922.7156.
And it’s not too late to contribute to the Annual Campaign! To make or increase your gift, visit

he sun rises in the east and it will set in the west but – in the blink
of an eye – it seems as if nothing else will ever be the same. The
job you counted on is gone. A rocket falls. A truth is revealed.
We cannot control what life may throw our way. But when we
stand together, we can find the strength to face anything.
Here are three stories that show how, through your gifts, together
we do extraordinary things.
Learn from yesterday
When Moshe and Yocheved first came to Ashkelon,
Israel, there was only sand where their house now stands.
They worked hard to build not only a home but a nation.
“I saved every cent to build this house,” Moshe says as
Yocheved nods in agreement.
Due to ongoing rocket attacks, Moshe, Yocheved
and their neighbors now live in a constant state of
emergency. When asked if she wanted to relocate to
protected housing, Yocheved didn’t hesitate. “No, no!
We don’t want to move under any circumstance,” she
replied. “You feel the best at home.”
As founders of the State of Israel – and as Holocaust
survivors – that simple home means the world to them.
For the past three years, Moshe and Yocheved have
been part of a Supportive Community, an American
Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) program
that provides a range of services to elderly Israelis who
wish to remain in their homes. Each group has at least
one “community father,” an individual responsible for
responding to the ‘members’ needs, from changing a
light bulb to holding a hand.
The Supportive Community also includes organized
activities such as guided tours, classes and social
events. “This is a community that creates activities and
everybody participates!” Yocheved exclaims from the
comfort of her own home.
With Federation donors by their sides, Moshe and
Yocheved know they never need to face their
challenges alone.

Live for today
A real estate developer, Ken has graduate degrees in architecture and business.
He and his wife live in a beautiful home with their two teenage sons and a yellow
labrador named Tikva. For two decades, Ken successfully climbed the corporate
ladder. “I was sitting on top of the world,” he says. “Then, overnight, I found
myself unemployed.”
Ken turned to Federation – his family had always donated to the Annual
Campaign, never imagining that he would one day be on the receiving end of
vital Federation supported services – and began attending programs designed
for unemployed people like himself. “You realize that you’re in good company
with other very smart, accomplished, successful businesspeople who have simply
found themselves out of luck in hard times,” he says. “It reorients you.” Indeed,
Ken has come to view his business setbacks as the force that brought him closer
to Judaism.
Ken believes that he will soon be back at work and, when he returns to the
corporate world, he has vowed to maintain the connections he made and
remember the lessons he learned while unemployed. “Federation has kept me
connected with other positive, like-minded, caring Jews who offer their support
and encouragement,” he says. “It just makes you feel like you’re not alone. With a
little faith and with good company, we will come out of these difficult times with
a new appreciation for our community and the Jewish Federation.”
MOSHE & YOCHEVED
Hope for tomorrow
Ever since she could remember, Kelsey had wanted to go on the March of the Living.
In 2007, she had her chance. “There’s nothing like that feeling of walking under that
“Arbeit Macht Frei” sign at Auschwitz for the first time,” she says. “It’s otherworldly.”
While immersed in the March of the Living two-week-long Holocaust education
program, supported in part by generous gifts from Federation donors, Kelsey
heard many stories of survivors returning to the concentration camps with their
families. She was particularly moved by the experiences of one survivor and his
adult son.
KEN
“Unbeknownst to his dad, the son had gone to a market and gotten all these different
foods to have a picnic because his dad had said the hunger and the suffering was
what you never got over. You got over the death and you became numb to it but
the suffering you just never got over. They sat and had a picnic at Treblinka,” she
says. “There’s something about this that just pulls at the heartstrings and makes
the emotions go a little crazy because it is bringing life to a place that was full of
death.”
Kelsey was so moved by her experience that she earned a degree in Holocaust Studies,
paving the way for future generations to “never forget.”
KELSEY
“There are those of us who are going to carry the torch. We do care and we are
going to step up. I’m going to collect as many stories as I can and keep passing
them on. Ultimately,” she says, “we do all belong to each other in this world.”

An Epic Year
2013 Annual Meeting
A Hollywood Oscar-themed Zinman Hall was the transformed setting for a
celebration of Federation’s accomplishments and leaders, at the 2013 Annual
Meeting on April 30, 2013. From the red carpet entrance until the final curtain
call, the sense of pride and partnership among 250 of our passionate, committed
community leaders and donors was a true testament to “An Epic Year.” Roxane
and Michael Lipton chaired an evening of warmth, joy and optimism that will
resonate for a long time, as it set the stage for the coming year.
The multimedia State of the Federation Address delivered
by Board Chair Ellen R. Sarnoff left no doubt that the
Federation’s efforts are on target: we are indeed building
a stronger community to care for each other. Ellen began
her third year as Chair later in the evening, when the
membership accepted the 2013-14 report from Nominating
Committee Chair Thomas R. Kaplan.
Speaking at his first Federation Annual Meeting, President & CEO Matthew C. Levin
presented a vision for our community that resonated far beyond the people in the
room that night, encompassing our entire community.
To cheers and rousing applause, four of our community’s brightest stars received
significant awards at the event. The awardees’ moving remarks heightened the
deep satisfaction in feeling part of a caring family at this elegant event.
“We are poised to move forward and fulfill our potential as a strong,
dynamic and caring Jewish community as we help feed, protect, teach,
inspire, save and comfort thousands of people every day, everywhere.” CHAILIFE 8

N
ot long after Ellen Sarnoff moved from New York to Boca Raton,
a donor and friend asked her to write a $5,000 check to the Jewish
Federation of South Palm Beach County. “I was new to the
community,” Ellen says, looking back with a smile. “I was afraid to say no.” When he
came back for more the following year, she decided it was time to find out about where
her money was going.
Moved by the work undertaken every day by Federation and its partner agencies, Ellen’s
involvement quickly grew. “I felt I had found a new family,” she says. “I still feel that way.”
Since then, Ellen has demonstrated her commitment to Federation and her passion
for our mission in countless ways. Now in her third year as Federation Board Chair,
she previously led three Annual Campaigns, as well as the King David Society, Lion of
Judah Endowment and Financial Resource Development Committees. A past Women’s
Division Chair, Ellen was inaugural recipient of the Dorothy P. Seaman Leadership
Award, and now sits on the JFNA National Women’s Philanthropy Board. She serves
on the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation Board, and is a charter member of the
Jewish Women’s Foundation. Ellen has also served on boards of our beneficiary agencies.
She now chairs the Federation CCRC Development, LLC, as it develops Sinai Residences
on campus, a project to which she is firmly committed.
Ellen is focused on the continuing effort to build strong bridges that will connect
committed, compassionate supporters and diverse community partners with people
in need. “When Ellen sets her mind to something, success is never far away,” says
Matthew C Levin, President and CEO of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach
County. “Her quiet strength belies the power of her leadership. Ellen has been absolutely
instrumental in helping guide our Federation through a transitional period.”
Ellen shrugs off the effort. “I get more out of this than what I give, there’s no question,”
she says. “I just feel great every day thinking about the good that we do.”
What has been your highest priority as Chair of the Jewish Federation
of South Palm Beach County?
It’s very important to me that people feel good about being a part of this
Jewish community because of what we can achieve together.
What would you say has been your greatest accomplishment in that role?
No question - bringing Matt Levin on board as our CEO. He’s an outstanding leader,
who has changed the face of our Federation. We’ve absolutely turned the corner. He’s
lifted our spirits.

NEW INITIATIVES
Building Community through New Local Partnerships
This year, our Federation began building and enhancing
collaborations through two new local funding initiatives
that are making a difference across our Jewish community.
Through the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation’s
Kamsly Teen Program Fund, we’re supporting dynamic
Jewish youth activities at fifteen different synagogues and
organizations. Eleven synagogues and organizations also
received new grants through our Planning & Allocations
process for Outreach programming.
Jules L. & Dorothy M. Kamsly Teen Programs Fund
In accordance with the Kamslys’ directive, the Jacobson Jewish Community
Foundation (JJCF) allocates income from this endowment fund to support
Jewish teen programming. The 2013 JJCF Grants Committee awarded
$60,550 in one-year allocations to 15 applicant organizations.
Adolph & Rose Levis JCC
The JCC Maccabi Games
Community Outreach Grants
This year, the Federation’s Planning & Allocations Committee, as
recommended by the Community Outreach Task Force, allocated
$30,000 in grant funding to 11 applicant organizations toward building
and enhancing a vibrant and sustainable Jewish community in South
Palm Beach County.
We’re proud to be helping these partners – some of
which had never before received funding from us – with
their remarkable creative, strategic efforts. Together, we
are doing even more extraordinary things.

As the FRD Chair, and in my own philanthropy,
I am passionate about securing the well-being
of our Jewish community as well as our people,
today and into the future. While we are a large
community, we are still very young compared
to cities like Chicago, Boston or New York,
where endowments have been in place for
generations. We’re committed to meeting the
ever-growing needs around us.
As I complete my three-year tenure as
Campaign Chair, I am thrilled to report that
our Annual Campaign is increasing. There’s
a buzz in the air. If you’ve come to some of
our dynamic campaign events recently, you’ve
seen and felt it. From our country clubs and
divisions, from Women’s Philanthropy, and
major donor functions to THE EVENT, the
revitalization of our campaign and community is unmistakable.
So I’m thrilled that we’re moving to a new stage of life as a
community, coming together to take great strides toward a
brighter Jewish future. Our Foundation’s brand new Promises Kept
Endowment Campaign has already brought in over $3.2 million
in received and expected dollars. The 15 local synagogue, agency
and school partners in our Create a Jewish Legacy program have
raised more than $4 million in expected funds as the initiative ends
its second year. In addition, 16 visionary women protected their
annual Lion of Judah gifts forever with generous endowments.
And our Annual Campaign is up with signs of growth and expansion
everywhere. Today, the future of our Federation is looking bright!
We’re reaching out wider and deeper than ever before to engage
people throughout our community at all levels – with new King David
Society programming, initiatives like Emerging Jewish Philanthropists,
the rejuvenated Business & Professional Division, young adult
activities and more. We’ve jumpstarted with Campaign Ignition and
restored the Campaign Cabinet. We’re traveling to Cuba, DC, Russia,
Greece and, of course, Israel, returning inspired to do more.

It was a SUPER SUNDAY
On March 17, three hundred passionate volunteers from
South Palm Beach County’s Jewish community kept the
phones ringing throughout the area on behalf of those
who depend on the Jewish Federation of South Palm
Beach County. Coming together for the annual Super
Sunday phone-a-thon, they demonstrated once again
the power of volunteerism and tzedakah! Thanks to
their efforts, by day’s end more than 900 donors had
contributed $550,000 to the Federation’s 2013 Annual
Campaign for Jewish Needs.
All ages and all streams of our vibrant Jewish community
worked together to make sure that vital needs will be
met for their neighbors and extended Jewish family.
Volunteers also collected and packaged food donated
for clients of the Jacobson Family Food Pantry at JFS.
The day full of ruach and caring was co-chaired by Kathy
& Ken Green and Wendy & Elliot Koolik with a teen
initiative led by Alexa Green, Lindsey Koolik and Gabby
and Serena Deutch.

Dorothy P. Seaman Department of Women’s Philanthropy
Shalom!
What an incredible
year! I have never
been more proud of
our Federation and our
Women’s Philanthropy
Department! Not only
have we raised increased dollars
for our Annual Campaign, but we
have encouraged hundreds of new
and potential donors to be part of
our Jewish community’s mission of
outreach, engagement, tikkun olam
and tzedakah. We have proven that we
can truly do extraordinary things that
change the lives of those who need our
support both locally and globally.
Together we have made Women’s
Philanthropy a warmer, more inviting,
inclusive place where women can feel
proud to donate their time, expertise,
passion, resources and love. It truly
takes a village to accomplish our
goals. I am forever grateful for each
community member’s support and
encouragement during this past year,
as well as the commitment and vision
of our talented staff partners. It’s a
new day at our Federation. I am lucky
to be sharing these exciting times with
you. I know that next year will be just as
phenomenal...we are a great team!
Women’s Philanthropy
Installation Celebration
Celebrating another successful year and setting the scene for an outstanding
2013-14 season, 60 caring, committed and generous women gathered on
March 21 for the annual Women’s Philanthropy Board Installation Celebration.
Dorothy Wizer chaired the brunch event, which brought the warmth of spring
and family into Zinman Hall on the Federation campus.
Anne Jacobson conducted an inspirational ceremony to install the officers
who will lead Women’s Philanthropy into 2013-14, continuing to extend
WP’s warm, inviting and inclusive welcome farther into the community.
Dotti Seaman presented Barbara Lewin with the 2013 Dorothy Seaman
Leadership Award. Rabbi David Steinhardt provided a fitting d’var Torah,
and Lawrence Katz was on hand to receive kudos for Wells Fargo Private
Bank’s very generous 2013 sponsorship of the Dorothy Seaman Department

Twenty-eight dedicated Federation women took their caring
and commitment to a new level and a new location, heading
to Washington, DC. On April 10-11, Mission Chairs Jill Deutch,
Debra Halperin and Wendi Lipsich led the enthusiastic
group through two whirlwind days to advocate on areas of
great concern to the Jewish community: Charitable Giving
Incentives, the Older Americans Act and women’s issues.

Bubbe and Zayde
Would Be Proud
Last fall, I wrote about
the lessons of our
grandparents’ generation
and the enormous shoes
young adults have to
fill. Today I am happy
to report that Bubbe and Zayde would
indeed be proud of the giant steps in
outreach, engagement and fundraising
made by YAD this year.
Hundreds of new faces joined in handson service, mingled at happy hours,
taught children tzedakah, learned
leadership skills and danced the night
away to the sights and sounds of the
1980’s. And, while the brilliant smiles
you see on the surrounding pages are
evidence of the fun we had, YAD’s
campaign also increased, achieving its
highest total in many years.
The shoes are still big and there is still
much filling to do. However, at least
tonight, our community might sleep a
little easier knowing that young adults
in South Palm Beach County are truly
stepping up to give it their best try.

PREPARING TO LEAD
YAD’s Leadership Education and Development Series continued to ready
both first and second year classes to step up to community leadership.
Sessions were led by Federation lay leaders, agency professionals and
experts in the field of leadership development.
In addition to building personal and professional networks and leadership
skills, the LEADS participants were given an in-depth look at how
Federation addresses the essential needs of the Jewish community—
locally, in Israel and around the world.
Young Adults Honor Earth Day
with Beach Cleanup
Energized YAD participants spent Sunday morning, April 21 at South Inlet
Park in Boca Raton. But there were no paddle boards, blankets, lounge
chairs or leisure involved. Instead, these young Jewish adults concerned
with the environment honored Earth Day by collecting eight big barrels
of trash from the picnic area, dunes and beach. A park ranger provided
supplies and direction, and away they went.
Singles and couples, familiar faces and newcomers enjoyed their morning
- and look forward to other opportunities to roll up their sleeves, do good
and get to know each other better. The Earth Day Beach Cleanup was
chaired by Emily Einhorn.

Playdate with a Purpose and a Parachute: Israeli
Dancing HIGHLIGHTS YAD EVENT
It definitely wasn’t the same old playdate when
enthusiastic, energetic young participants headed to the
Weisman Delray Community Center of Ruth Rales Jewish
Family Service. And it wasn’t the usual Israeli dancing as
leader May Nu incorporated a parachute, rings and more
for the younger set.
Seniors at the Center joined in to watch, play and dance
as well, for an amazing intergenerational afternoon with
new friends and old. Chaired by Erika Lewin-Harris,
Playdates with a Purpose is a Federation YAD series
designed for parents and caregivers with children ages
two to eight.
Passover Comes to Bloomies:
Delicious Date Night for Young Couples
Young couples headed to Bloomingdale’s in Town Center
for Date Night on March 14 for a Passover cooking
demonstration. Celebrity Chef Michael Saperstein
provided some tasty updates on traditional favorites.
The wonderful evening was chaired by Nicole &

YAD LOVES THE 80S AT SEASON’S PREMIER NIGHT OUT FOR
YOUNG JEWISH ADULTS
In the neon-lit lounge atmosphere with the sounds of
Duran Duran, Kiss, Motley Crue and even Boy George
spun by DJs, surrounded by Simply Irresistible chic wear,
big hair and the finest in young company, it was ultraclear that our young Jewish adults truly loved the 80s.
On May 18, the night was young at Mizner Park Cultural
Arts Center with throw-back 80s cocktails, desserts and
TAB, song dedications, live music from the band Bounce,
and even a break dancer. But the guests really showed
their True Colors in the extremely popular photo booth
and on the dance floor.
They also saw how young adults are a vital part of this
community, and had an amazing time celebrating their
shared identity. As donors, they were reminded about
all the good their generosity is doing, hearing about
our Federation’s work overseas through Liz Fine from
the American Jewish Joint Distribution Center (JDC) as
well as experiencing the local power of their dollars by
meeting a recipient who’s really one of their own.
The evening was chaired by Brett & Margo Schneider and
Andrea & Jesse Lieberman.
The Young Adult Division of the Jewish Federation of South
Palm Beach County is generously sponsored by The Sandelman
Foundation. The in-kind sponsors of the evening were Atlas Party
Rental, Salon Edge of Boca Raton and L’Chaim Kosher Vodka.

YAD Happy Hours Wander through Tryst
and into Summer
Wherever YAD wanders for Happy Hour, it’s the place
for young Jewish adults in their 20s to early 40s to see
and be seen. Most recently, on April 11, the crowd enjoyed
great drinks, camaraderie and ambiance at Tryst. They
also heard about young adults’ important role in helping
the community from Federation President and CEO Matt
Levin. Whether you’re new to town, a veteran young leader
or anything in between, you’ll enjoy great evenings with
company you’ll want to keep, in venues you’ll want to visit!
This year’s wanderings included the best spots on Atlantic

to Federation. The great people are what got me to donate my time. The great
networking opportunities and learning experiences I get at the B&P and Federation
events are what keep me involved and inspire me to do even more to help.”
- Eric Lebersfeld, Capitol Lighting
“After being out of the Federation loop for quite some time, I fell upon an Icon event
which I fully enjoyed. It brought me back, and I am enjoying my role with the B&P Cabinet. It’s good to connect with old friends while making new connections and helping
the Jewish community both here and overseas.”
- Lauren Cohen, Esq., Business Plans by the Write Professionals
“Our move here wasn’t going to be permanent. Then I toured the Federation campus,
met the B&P Director and others. As the new feeling of being part of something very
special grew, we decided to expand our business and make the move permanent.
Joining B&P was a great first step to meet other successful professionals and business
owners who share our commitment to the community.”

mid Israeli flags and falafel, nearly 3,000 people of all ages filled Mizner Park
Amphitheater on Sunday May 19, 2013. With ruach emanating throughout
the community, they stood together in unmistakable commitment to
celebrate the 65th anniversary - and the miracles - of the modern State of Israel.
South Palm Beach County’s vibrant Jewish diversity was on full display at the area’s
largest annual Jewish community event, presented by the Jewish Federation of
South Palm Beach County and its Jewish Community Relations Council. Synagogues,
schools, agencies, organizations and Judaica artists gave the day a festival
atmosphere, colorfully displaying their work at 35 tents around the amphitheater.
Children’s activities welcomed families, who stayed
throughout the festivities. The crowd moved to and
was moved by the upbeat internationally renowned
a capella group, The Maccabeats, and a beautiful
performance by the Boca Raton Symphonia.
The next generation’s bond with Israel was
manifest, as students from Donna Klein Jewish
Academy and Weinbaum Yeshiva High School
provided dance and music, and Hillel Day
School presented a traditional daglanut Israeli
flag routine. A combined children’s choir from
B’nai Torah Congregation, Congregation B’nai
Israel, Congregation Shaarei Kodesh and Temple
Beth El also spread across the stage.
Former Palm Beach County Commissioner Burt Aaronson, a longtime supporter of
the annual community-wide Israel celebration, greeted the audience. The crowd was
also stirred by Chaim Shacham, Consul General of Israel to Florida & Puerto Rico,
Congressman Ted Deutch, and Pastor Tye Riter of Calvary West Boca as well as
Federation CEO Matt Levin and Campaign Chair Betty Kane.

Another Stellar Year of
Community Investment
The
Jacobson
Jewish
Community
Foundation
(JJCF) is concluding another stellar
year. We launched our Endowment
Campaign, Promises Kept, which
Elyssa is honored to chair. To date
we have brought in over $3.2 million
in cash and expected dollars!
All our Foundation’s programs
and committees: Create a Jewish
Legacy, the Jewish Women’s
Foundation, the Mitzvah Society,
the Professional Advisory
Committee and Women’s Planned
Giving and Endowments have made
major strides, as you’ll read on the
following pages.
We thank our outgoing Chair of
the PAC, Marjorie Horwin, whose
leadership for these past three
years has been invaluable. We
congratulate Matthew Kutcher, our
incoming Investment Chair; and Ken
Pritzker and Joel Yudenfreund, our
incoming PAC Chairs. Last but not
least, we must extend our deepest
thanks, respect and admiration
to David Pratt for five truly
extraordinary years as our JJCF
Chair. We thank him for the lasting
legacy he has left with us all!

Spreading the Love and Creating a
Legacy: Generosity Brings Canine
Companions to JARC
Dorothy Seaman never misses the JARC clients’
heartwarming annual play, one of their cultural
arts activities made possible by a gift in memory
of her husband, Larry. This year, an impromptu
touching conversation with a JARC resident on
a bench during intermission inspired her to make
a second $100,000 endowment gift to JARC, for
another realm of rewarding programming.
“When she asked if I had a dog, I told her how
Pepe, my ten-year-old Shih Tzu, just wants to be
loved, sit in a lap and be petted. I thought of how
he sat with my husband when he was ill, how he
knows if I’m not feeling well and comes to comfort me,” said Dotti. “Then a
light came on: we could have dogs in the JARC homes so our residents can
experience that feeling for themselves!”
Dotti found Dr. Debra
Hallow, JARC’s
Executive Director and
another great animal
lover, immediately
receptive. In fact,
having had successful
therapy dog visits and requests for pets in the JARC homes, they were
already looking for a way to expand animal therapy. With Dotti’s generous
gift, they’re now looking forward to sharing the fun, as well as proven
benefits of having dogs, including longevity, health, developing empathy
and learning responsibility through hands-on caregiving.
For now, JARC will be carefully preparing homes and residents for the
coming responsibilities, finding pro bono veterinary care, and holding a
contest for residents to name the program. But, soon enough and for the
years to come, JARC residents will be sharing their homes with the joy and
comfort of furry companions.
“I wanted this to be part of my legacy so our JARC clients can experience
the great emotional and physical rewards I know a dog can provide,” said
Dotti. “I just wonder why I didn’t think of it before.”
Now in their second year with Create a Jewish Legacy, the program’s fifteen agency,
synagogue and school partners have already raised more than $4 million in expected
funds. With training, materials and support from the Jacobson Jewish Community
Foundation, they are engaging their constituents to make a major impact in their
organizations and our community for generations to come. For more information,

A Timely Gift:
Appreciated Stock
With the stock market reaching higher levels, it may
be time to consider donating appreciated securities,
stocks, corporate bonds, State of Israel Bonds,
and mutual funds. These vehicles will build our
community and your legacy, while avoiding the tax
on capital gains:
• A Donor Advised Fund (DAF) with the Jacobson Jewish
Community Foundation (JJCF) establishes a “philanthropic
bank” to receive your donated securities, which are then sold.
The DAF funds are then invested, and you recommend their
distribution to the charities you care about.
• A JJCF Endowment Fund* provides annual funding for a
specific program or for general use, in perpetuity.
• A Lion of Judah Endowment (LOJE)* or Perpetual
Annual Campaign Endowment (PACE)* fund protects
your annual gift to the Jewish Federation of South Palm
Beach County’s (JFSPBC) Annual Campaign for Jewish
Needs in perpetuity.
• You may use the proceeds from donated securities to
pay your annual pledge to the JFSPBC annual campaign
for current or future years.
WHAT
PROMISE
WILL YOU MAKE TO
FUTURE GENERATIONS?
The Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation is here
to help fulfill your promise that there will always be a
strong and thriving Jewish community and people.
As a reminder, if you are of age 701/2 or older and are required
to withdraw a Minimum Distribution from your IRA or
Retirement account, you may do that directly to the JFSPBC
and avoid the appropriate tax on income received.
To find out more about tax-smart investments and arrange a
confidential discussion, contact Steve Rose, Director of the JJCF
at 561-852-3114. In all situations, please discuss the financial, tax
and legal implications of establishing a charitable gift plan with
your own personal professional advisors.
*Additionally, when you establish one of the above Endowment
Funds through our JJCF, you may also be recognized in local
and national honor societies.
Learn about the easy ways you can keep your promise,
l’dor v’dor, from generation to generation. Please

IN
GIVING:
Richard Steinberg, 2013 Mitzvah Society Honoree
At its annual Mitzvah Society reception, the Professional Advisory
Committee (PAC) of the Jacobson Jewish Community Foundation (JJCF)
honored Richard Steinberg for his exemplary service and leadership.
Professionally, Steinberg is President and Chief Investment Officer of
Steinberg Global Asset Management, and a frequent guest on CNBC’s
Squawk Box and PBS’ Nightly Business Report. As a volunteer, he’s an
active PAC member, was Vice Chair of JJCF and chaired its Investment
Committee, has been Vice Chair of corporate sponsorships, twice co-chaired
Super Sunday, and is a recipient of the Federation’s James and Margie Baer
Young Leadership Award. And he’s now the incoming JJCF Chair.
“Rich is a great leader, friend and confidant, with an incredibly strong
passion for our Jewish Federation, our Jewish heritage and Israel,” said
David Pratt, outgoing Chair of JJCF. “With Rich’s incredible talent and
vision, the JJCF is poised to continue growing by leaps and bounds.”
• What inspired you to become involved with Jewish philanthropy?
When we first moved here, my wife, Naomi, became very involved in Federation. We
wanted to feel part of the community and teach our kids that not everyone lives “La Vida
Boca.” Steinberg Global was a young company and my attention needed to be on the firm.
When Naomi started her business, our volunteer roles began to switch. The community’s
investment in both of us through leadership development, mission experiences and more
has been instrumental to our continued, deepening engagement here.
• What principles guide your approach to philanthropy?
My main principle is you need to give until it helps. My second principle is to connect
clients with projects that they are passionate about and connect those links. My
last principle is that primarily only Jews give to Jewish causes. There are certainly
exceptions, but the gift is different than giving to a museum or performing arts charity.
• As the incoming Chair of the Foundation, what are your goals – and what do you see
as the biggest challenges?
My primary goal is to build our unrestricted endowment. That is the lifeblood of our
ability to help the community in the future. It is our primary goal and our primary
challenge. I just want to build on the amazing job that David Pratt has done. He has
given me a roadmap for the future prosperity of the Foundation.
I also want the Jewish community at large to understand that the Foundation is there
for everyone. At the same time, we need to build their awareness of the importance of
investing in the future of our community and our people through the JJCF.
• What is something about you that might surprise people?
People may be surprised that, despite my bravado, I am actually a softy inside. On a
recent mission to Cuba with other leaders from the Jewish Federation, I cried like a
baby as we discussed ways to leave a lasting imprint on the Jewish Community there. It
wasn’t the first time this has happened, and I am sure it won’t be the last!

Mission to Israel Packs Power for PAC
The bonds among caring estate professionals in our
Professional Advisory Committee along with their
connections to Israel strengthened once again during a
remarkable mission in April 2013. After spending a week
together traveling throughout our homeland, the group
returned deeply moved, thoroughly energized and even more
ready to make a difference!
Led by Mission Co-chairs Matt Kutcher, Jerry Wolf and Joel
Yudenfreund, along with Federation CEO Matt Levin, the
packed itinerary took twenty-five PAC members, including
estate and trust attorneys, financial wealth advisors,
accountants and insurance professionals to see in person how
our Federation’s dollars are making a difference -as well as to
some of Israel’s most awe-inspiring sites. From first-time to
seasoned Israel visitors, together they experienced the Golan
Heights on ATVs, modern Tel Aviv, and the rich Jewish diversity
of Jerusalem including the Old City and the Western Wall in
daylight and at midnight, Yad Vashem and Masada. Colonel
(ret.) Danny Tirza, the IDF’s Chief Architect for the Security
Fence, led a seam line tour for the PAC members.
Some of the most memorable experiences took place in our
Sister City, Kiryat Bialik. PAC members formed and deepened
friendships, learned about the area, and visited shared projects
- discovering how connected our communities have become
since 2002 through Partnership 2gether (Formerly P2K).
In an unforgettable evening before leaving Jerusalem, the PAC
members walked to the Kotel. After a meaningful Shabbat
dinner together, they gathered around to reflect on their time
spent in the land of Israel, sharing experiences, sites and people
they wanted to remember. With this powerful last Mission
experience, the group truly returned as family.

personally selected by the JWF trustees. Here’s how three of those
programs have been changing lives for a variety of Jewish women
and girls through the vision and generosity of this Jacobson

SAVVY – Adolph & Rose Levis JCC
SAVVY has offered workshops to enable
young local Jewish women and teen
girls with special needs to learn self
defense, and build skills to strengthen
their physical and emotional health.
Two sessions totaling 30 classes were
based on a structured curriculum
incorporating Jewish values. The women
and girls learned to protect themselves physically, and by working
with a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. In the process, they developed
confidence to consider new possibilities in self development with peers,
family, classmates, work and fitness.
Empowerment Program for
Teenage Girls at Risk – Ethiopian
National Project
JWF has also been changing teenage
girls’ lives through the Girls Empowerment
Program at the Ethiopian National
Project’s Youth Outreach Center in our
Sister City, Kiryat Bialik. From meeting
with inspirational female role models to
exploring the many issues facing them as adolescent and immigrant girls, the
project is creating a cadre of future young Ethiopian-Israeli women leaders
motivated to succeed and fully integrate into Israeli society.
Young Women for Future Leadership
Training – WePower
This leadership development program
has been preparing women activists
between the ages of 25 and 55, who
possess a sense of mission and a desire
to create and lead social change. The
program features 10 bi-weekly four-hour
sessions, moderated by a professional group leader. Together, the women
develop leadership skills, learning about Leadership, Politics and Gender
Issues; Analyzing the Local Political/Public Environment; Setting & Reaching
Personal Goals; and Learning from Role Models/Networking with local
women leaders and government officials.

Partnership 2Gether:
A New Decade of
Fortifying Bonds
with Our Sister City
Since 2002, P2Gether
(formerly Partnership 2000/
P2K) has been building
living bridges between
residents and institutions in
South Palm Beach County
and our Sister City, Kiryat
Bialik. Over the years, many
women, teens, educators
and other professionals from
both communities have
taken part in a variety of
exchanges. Coming together
around common experiences
and needs, they’ve formed
lasting friendships and
collaborated on projects
of mutual concern, from a
playground to bomb shelters,
from special needs school
equipment to after-school
programming for Ethiopian
children, and beyond.
Legacy of Love Helps Seniors in Sister City
Lewis Rosenthal established the Mollie
Rosenthal Memorial Fund with our Jewish
Community Foundation in 1989 to honor
his mother, who was born in Russia in 1876
and immigrated to New York barely into
her teens. When the Great Depression
took its toll on her family, Mollie
persevered to provide a haven for those
in need and ensure that her children went
to college. Her efforts touched many lives
and enabled Lewis to become a successful
dentist with a passion for Israel.
This year, the Mollie Rosenthal Memorial
Fund has honored Mollie’s spirit and
compassion by funding two American
Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC)
projects in our Sister City, Kiryat Bialik, Israel.
With support from the fund, the Supportive
Community Program has expanded to
provide vital day-to-day assistance and
urgent medical care to an additional
103 elderly residents ages 73 to 90. The
neighborhood-based program helps them
age in the comfort of their homes while
remaining connected to the community.
The Glickman Center for Education and
Training in Kiryat Bialik has also received
essential funding to build and enhance
the skills of those who care for the elderly
in varied capacities. Services offered
include training, advanced studies, and
human resource development. This
training is becoming ever more important
with the area’s rising senior population
and their increasingly complex needs.

PARTNERSHIP2gether(P2G) WOMEN’S EXCHANGE JOINT FUNDRAISER
Though 6,500 miles away, our Federation’s Sister City, Kiryat Bialik, Israel, keeps getting closer through bonds of friendship and understanding. This past November, we were privileged to
travel to Israel and share a remarkable week with 6 wonderful women from Kiryat Bialik, as we participated in the third South Palm Beach County Partnership2gether Women to Women’s
Exchange. We had so many meaningful and powerful moments together, but when we visited the after-school program for disadvantaged Ethiopian Israeli children at the Pisgot elementary
school, we knew that we had to help in some way.
The after-school program has too many children and not enough staff. They do their best, but if we could provide them with one more staff member, many more of these children would have the opportunity
to get extra help in basic reading and math. The benefits of one more staff member are enormous.
The cost per year for this additional teacher is $6,000. Your help at any level will be greatly appreciated!
While we’re raising money in SPBC for the teacher, our Kiryat Bialik sisters will be collecting toys, games and school supplies for the children at the Pisgot Elementary School after school program. Working
together as a Boca-Bialik team, we will improve the lives of 99 children every afternoon!

included meeting with Mayor Eli Dukorsky at

Learning Together across the
Globe – Virtually
Educators and students from South Palm Beach County and Kiryat
Bialik have been forming relationships, exchanging visits and
collaborating on projects for a decade. This year, they’ve been
thoroughly enjoying learning and working together through virtual
exchanges. The Boca-Bialik connection continues to grow and succeed!
Students at B’nai Torah Congregation in Boca Raton and Donna
Klein Jewish Academy have been using Skype to “meet” online with
their peers at Kadima School in KB. While they began with our local
students speaking English and the Israelis speaking Hebrew, by the
end of the year they were communicating in each other’s languages.
Congregation B’nai Israel in Boca Raton and Habonim School in KB
have been emailing letters and photos to stay in touch.
When Kiryat Bialik Mayor Eli

March of the Living Visits
Kiryat Bialik
While in Israel, the 52 students in South Palm Beach
County’s 2013 March of the Living delegation followed
precedent. They enjoyed home hospitality for a night with
new and old friends in Kiryat Bialik, with whom they’re
sure to stay in touch electronically. The students also
participated in both the municipal and ORT High School
observances of Yom HaZikaron, Israel Memorial Day,
laying wreaths in moving ceremonies that made clear the
impact of the widespread losses experienced by families
through war and terror.
We are very pleased and proud to announce plans for a
community-wide leadership mission to Israel November 5-13,
2013. The mission includes our participation in the Jewish
Federations of North America (JFNA) General Assembly in
Jerusalem (November 10-13). The goal and purpose of this
mission is to bring together the lay and professional leadership
of our community – Federation, synagogues, day schools, and
organizations – to learn and experience Israel together. As part
of the GA we will join our friends and colleagues from around
the world to discuss the issues facing the Jewish world today. .
We will have the opportunity to hear from top level government
officials, Jewish thinkers, NGOs and entrepreneurs.
We believe this will be a transformative moment for our
community. We will celebrate Israel @ 65 and use our time
together to learn, challenge and inspire each other to become
even better Jewish leaders!

JEWISH COMMUNITY RELATIONS COUNCIL
Jewish Teens Learn and Make Friends at JARC on
Service Day
Fifty teens from eleven area schools joined their friends and made new ones at
JARC at a very special event on April 21 - while earning community service hours.
Jewish Teen Service Day was devised by a group of local teens convened by
the Jewish Community Relations Council of South Palm Beach County (JCRC)
to help bring local Jewish youth from public and private schools together for an
appealing and meaningful activity.
The afternoon kicked off in Zinman Hall with a kosher barbecue lunch and a
bit about the work of the Jewish Federation. A walk through the Federation
campus to JARC helped bring this learning home. Dr. Debra Hallow, JARC
Executive Director, oriented the rapt students to relationship building
and sensitivities in socializing with persons living with different types of
special needs. Then, the teens and JARC residents played Bingo and talked
together. Before leaving, a number of students requested information about
volunteering there on a regular basis.
Instrumental to Teen Service Day’s success was the partnership effort of local
schools, synagogues and teen organizations with the JCRC for planning and
recruitment. Some of their staff were on hand for the event: Daniel Mesa and
Jen Coane of Jewish Student Connection; Justin Pollack from BBYO; and Shira
Englander of Weinbaum Yeshiva High School. Together, our community provided
a great day of service and companionship for teens and JARC residents, with
connections that will continue developing for the benefit of all.
boca Teen Wins Israel at 65 Video Contest
South Palm Beach County students in Grades 9-12 were invited by the
Jewish Community Relations Council to submit a short YouTube video
highlighting one or more of the many achievements of the State of
Israel in this 65th anniversary year of the Jewish homeland. The winner of the contest was announced at the Federation on
Tuesday, May 28. Simcha Stadlan, a 9th grade student at Weinbaum
Yeshiva High School, accepted the prize, an iPad Mini, in the presence
of his parents and others who attended a screening of the video. Simcha’s video cited Israel’s achievements in the areas of Technology & Science, Tikkun Olam (Repairing the World),
Culture & Arts, Lifestyle & Leisure, the Environment, and People & Heritage. This remarkable production will appear on the
Jewish Federation’s website, and on the JCRC’s webpage for viewing by the public. Simcha said that it took many hours to compile and arrange photographs, create titles and set the piece to music. The
son of Liz and Dr. Carmi Stadlan, he’s visited Israel twice– once with family, and again on a trip with the Hillel Day School.
(Simcha also attended the Levis JCC Zale Early Childhood Center)
This video has provided our community with a three-minute snapshot that will educate and inspire viewers about the
miraculous modern State of Israel. See it now at: jewishboca.org/imagination.

JCRC Hears Florida Session Wrap-up
Our Federation’s Jewish Community Relations Council met on May 8 to review the
Florida Legislative session. Bernie Friedman, Esq., longtime lobbyist for Florida’s
Association of Jewish Federations, reported on areas of concern to the Federation, its
beneficiary agencies and the Jewish community.
Friedman lauded the JCRC for its success with funding for Federation
Transportation Service, Holocaust survivors assistance, adult day care and
Kosher meals. He also explained the unanimously passed Holocaust Victims
Insurance Act which will allow the State of Florida to pursue insurance
companies for policies never paid out during the Holocaust.

There was also good news on Israel, with two long-sought allocations. A
recurring $1 million will foster collaborative aerospace research, development and
commercialization with Israel’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Labor. Further, a
$100,000 annual allocation will establish an Enterprise Florida office in Tel Aviv for
Florida and Israel companies interested in doing business together.
Adults Receive Melton “Diplomas”
At the height of graduation season, 28 men and women received
Certificates of Jewish Studies from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem
on May 23, 2013. The 5773 class of the Florence Melton School of Adult
Jewish Learning had completed their two-year curriculum.
Together, in weekly classes, they had discovered what it really means to
be Jewish through the history, heritage and culture of Judaic tradition in

Students from Four Day Schools Come Together to
Learn the Meaning of Chesed
More than 500 first through fifth grade students from our community’s diverse
Jewish Day Schools gathered at the Federation campus on February 27 to
learn about and practice the Jewish responsibility to take care of the people
around us. Filling Zinman Hall with colorful uniforms, kipot and ruach, the
students from Donna Klein Jewish Academy (DKJA), Hillel Day School and
Torah Academy heard from Federation CEO Matthew C. Levin and Director
of School Educational Services, Marilyn Nachman, and learned with Hadassah
Smolarcik, Hillel’s Judaic Studies Coordinator. They also viewed a video about
chesed produced by students from Weinbaum Yeshiva High School (WYHS)
before moving on to DKJA classrooms for hands-on activities.
Older students also played an important role, learning and teaching. Earlier in
February, the high school students of DKJA and WYHS researched chesed,
chose two projects for this year’s program, and provided lessons for the day
schools’ middle school grades. Later, middle school students accompanied
Grades 1-5 to the activity rooms, explaining the chesed projects and assisting
the younger students – who worked with partners from other schools. This
year, Grades 1-4 decorated picture frames with Hebrew inserts for disabled
Israeli veterans at Beit Halochem rehabilitation centers in Israel. The high
school students chose this project to thank those who gave so much for their
homeland as Israel’s 65th birthday approached. Grade 5 decorated Caps for
Kids to be distributed to children living with cancer.
The day was planned by the high school students with professional staff
from the four day schools, and the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach
County’s Department of Jewish Education School Educational Services.
Early Childhood Focus: Our
Students, Our Families. . . Ourselves!
As always, music and merriment joined serious learning when more than
200 Early Childhood educators from eight local centers came together
on February 8, 2013 for the Annual Jewish Educators Early Childhood
Conference. Gathered at Congregation B’nai Israel, they sang with Susan
Shane Linder before settling down to two major workshops.
They started with Kids Haven’t Changed but Parents Have: Tips
and Strategies for Connecting with Millennial Parents, led by Karen
Deerwester. Owner of Family Time Coaching and Consulting and
author of three parenting books, Deerwester is frequently featured
in local and national media. Emily Teck, a national Jewish music
educator and recording artist, then facilitated G-d is My BFF:
Developmentally Appropriate Prayer Practice for the Very Young.
The conference is coordinated each year by our Federation’s
Department of Jewish Education’s School Educational Services and
the Council of Early Childhood Directors of South Palm Beach County.

Flags & Festivities on Campus for Israel’s 65th
The ruach was palpable from the parking lots as the Federation
campus observed Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel Independence Day, on April
18. With Israeli music, dance, flags and cheers, the vibrant, colorful
celebration brought all generations together from throughout the
campus for several hours, right in Dedication Plaza. The Federation’s
Department of Jewish Education and Donna Klein Jewish Academy
collaborated on the lively program, which included professionally led
Israeli folk dancing with Silvio Berlfein of Horah Entertainment.
Amid a sea of blue and white flags, balloons and paper chains, the
DKJA classes took turns parading into and dancing in the plaza.
They were cheered on by Levis JCC’s Zale preschoolers with handdecorated flags, Jewish Association for Residential Care (JARC)
clients, senior residents of Gould and Weinberg Houses, and
employees & visitors from throughout the campus.
If that wasn’t enough to transport the Federation to Israel, DKJA’s
Israel for Real interactive exhibits filling Zinman Hall a few feet
away – including a Western Wall replica - were sure to do the trick.
Inspired and Dedicated, Teens Return from March of the Living
Deeply committed to bearing witness to the Holocaust and
keeping the spirit of “Never Again” alive for generations to
come, another group of local students has recently returned
from the annual March of the Living. After months of class
preparation, fifty-two high school juniors and seniors
boarded planes to a snow-covered Poland on April 4 to
begin the renowned two-week trip that culminates this
extraordinary, life-changing Holocaust education program.
From the depths of the Holocaust in the camps, the
ghettos and the remnants of what were thriving Jewish
communities in Poland, they marched from Auschwitz to
Birkenau on Yom HaShoah/Holocaust Remembrance Day
with 12,000 cohorts from 45 countries. From there they
went on to discover and celebrate the glory of the modern
State of Israel, observing Yom HaZikaron/Israel Memorial
Day and Yom HaAtzmaut/Israel Independence Day there.
Throughout, they formed powerful relationships that
continue with the dedicated adults who accompanied
them, including Holocaust survivors Rosette Goldstein,
Mary and Joe Eckstein, and Nina Frisch; and Rabbis Josh
Broide and Yaakov Green. Recruitment for the 2014 trip
(April 23 - May 7) is now underway for students entering
grades 11 and 12 in August, as well as for a 5-star adult bus.
