From the President’s Desk
Inside this issue:
OkFQHR Members:
Well, here we are, getting ready for the 2006 year. The
sponsors hip drive is going very well and I would like to thank
all of you for your help in obtaining thes e sponsorships.
Check out the sponsor ads in this newsletter and be sure to let
them know how much we appreciate them.
Be sure you keep up with all the changes we have made this
year. We have new classes, old returning classes, new
divisions, and a new venue for our August show. The
membership survey we conducted last fall was very
successful. I want to thank everyone who took the time to
complete a survey. We received a wealth of information and it
has been very beneficial to the board.
The Roundup & Review will be at the Oklahoma State Fair in
September, so we have cancelled our September show so
that we can all enjoy the R & R hosted in our home state.
We have a redefined the sponsorship levels as Gold, Silver,
Bronze, and Business, leaving a possibility of creating a
Platinum sponsorship level in the future.
You can expect to see the newsletter on a bi-monthly basis
this year. After this issue, the newsletter will be mailed on the
following schedule: mid-April, mid-June, mid-A ugust, lateOctober, and mid-December. The October issue will be later
to accommodat e the year-end standings publication.
We are planning a cattle clinic for everyone—from beginners
to the experienced cattle prodder—and another Fun Day Clinic
with Mike Jeffcoat. As we finalize the det ails on these events,
we will let you know the “wheres, whens, and whats” of each
one.
The membership directory will be coming out soon, so be
sure to get your membership information in so you can be
included. The form has an option to not be included if that is
your wish. This membership directory will be for members
only and no information will be shared with any other
organization.
I’m looking forward to anot her fun year with my OkFQHR
Family!
My regards,
Marilyn Duncan, 2006 President

Getting to Know… Stanley Burris
By Becky Reuter & Carolyn Jaques
S
tanley Burris has always been an industrious worker.
His first job, at age 11, was driving mules from
sunrise to sunset for $1.00 a day. Next, he drove a
tractor for 25 cents an hour. His goal was always to farm and
raise horses.
Born in Pooleville, Texas, on March 26,1930, Stanley and his
family moved to Yukon in 1933. Stanley had nine siblings,
although three died during childhood. Stanley graduated
from Yukon High School, attended OS U (Oklahoma A & M, at
that time) and served in Korea in the Air Force Reserve.
It was during his early youth that he spotted “t he most
beautiful girl in the world” on horseback, and married her
Stanley and his trusty sidekick, Jack.
years later, in 1951. Stanley and Joan raised three
daughters – Becky Reuter of El Reno, Lisa Close of Canyon, Tex as, and Gayla Knutson of Oklahoma City.
Stanley and Joan farmed northwest of Yukon, raising beef cattle, Quarter Horses, wheat, alfalfa and Bermuda
grass sod. They were honored as the Oklahoma Farm Family of the Year in 1981. After a courageous battle
with cancer, Joan passed away in 2005.
Stanley has a history of service to his community. Through the years he has continually been active in the
Methodist Churc h. Last summer, he went on a mission trip to Pitirreal, Mexico, and supervised the installation of
a water pressure system for the village. He served as the Chairman of the American Farm Bureau Young
People in 1959, and was chairman of both the Yuk on Chamber of Commerce and Yukon Board of Education.
Stanley has served on the Canadian County Farm Bureau Board for over forty years, and was rec ently a
delegate to the 2006 American Farm Bureau Convention in Nashville. He has long participated in the Canadian
County Fair, serving many years as Beef Superintendent and often sponsoring youth with their livestock
projects. He has been on the Oklahoma Shorthorn Association Board, the Oklahoma High School Rodeo
Association Board, was named Yukon’s Free Ent erprise Pers on of 1982, and is an honorary FFA Chapter
Farmer.
Other than Stanley’s family, horses have always been the love of his life. His first years with horses were not
always pleasure, but also work, while he spent many hours laboring in the fields to help his family.
Now Stanley has paid his dues…and the time he spends with his horses are purely becaus e of the love and
bond he feels for them. In the ’50s, ‘60’s and ‘70’s, Yukon’s Round-up Club, which he was a member of, was
outstanding. They looked very flas hy all mounted on their golden Palominos, sporting red and whit e leather
bridles and breast collars, saddles sitting on white blankets trimmed in red with
the large “Y” on eac h back corner. The uniformed riders would all wear white
shirts with red-fringed trim, along with cream chaps also initialed wit h a red “Y”.
That era has past, but those bridles and collars still hang in the tack room as a
reminder of pleasant memories. It was also around that time that Stanley
started to notice the sport of cutting. As he was already riding many fine cow
horses to gat her the family’s cattle, he began to study the sport and
become involved. Through many years of “suffering from the cutting-bug”,
Stanley has and still does mentor many young people who have also
developed a love of the sport by supporting them however he can, giving words
of encouragement to urge them along, or even loaning them a mount when
needed to teach a specific move.
Stanley is still that industrious worker and spends his days as the caretaker
of the farm his family has homesteaded for several generations while sharing
Stanley and Blair Townsend at
his time with his horses and his fait hful dog “Jack”. Luckily for us, he also still
the 2005 OkFQHR Awards Banquet. finds time to have a little fun with his OkFQHR family.

VOLUME 5, ISSUE 1
An Explanation of the Class Divisions for 2006
In 2006, OkFQHR will offer five divisions of cla sse s: Beginner, Novice, Amateur, Open and Youth. These
divisions are based on the RIDER’S eligibility, they have nothing to do with the age of the horse or how
much the horse has or ha sn’t been shown. Please make sure you understand the following so you will
know what you are eligible for and have what you need to enter the appropriate classe s thi s year.
However, this i s only a summary of what is in the FQHR Rule Book. As an exhibitor, it is your
responsibility to obtain a copy of the Rule Book and understand the rules before you show.
BEGINNER DIVISION
The intent of the Beginner Division is to help the beginning show exhibitor get acquainted with and confident in the show
arena environment. In 2006, the only Beginner classes we will offer are Walk/Trot and Ranch Pleasure. We feel these two
classes will best serve the purpose. The Beginner classes are non-sanctioned and the horse does not have to be registered
with FQHR or anywhere else for that matter. The ownership relationship to the rider is irrelevant in the Beginner classes. The
rider must be a member of OkFQHR. There are no national points but OkFQHR year-end awards will be given for these
classes. If you showed in the Beginner classes last year, you are ready to move up to the Novice and/or Amateur classes (if
you are eligible, see below) and you may not enter the Beginner classes again this year.
NOVICE or NOVICE AMATEUR DIVISION
(These terms are interchangeable.)
A person is considered Novice Amateur when he/she has not shown, judged, trained, or assisted in training a horse for
remuneration, either directly or indirectly, nor received compensation for instructing another person in riding, training, or
showing a horse in competition for five previous years. Any approved horse show judge is also ineligible.
Also, a rider may not have won $250 lifetime earnings in any event, may not ha ve earned a combined total of 10 or more
points in recognized associations in any event prior to January 1 of calendar year. Once you begin the year as a Novice, you
can finish the year as a Novice. When a rider becomes ineligible he/she will be moved out of the Novice Amateur division as
of December 31 of that year and must surrender his/her novice amateur cards to FQHR within 30 days of notification.
No horse may be shown by more than one exhibitor in any one class. In individual events, one exhibitor may show two
horses.
Classes are open to both youth and adults when meeting the criteria above. No youth (under age 18) may show stallions.
Points earned in the Novice Amateur Division shall not count toward a Certificate of Performance award or any other
championship.
You do not need a Novice Amateur card from FQHR to show at our local affiliate shows, however, you will need one to
show in Novice Amateur classes at the Roundup and Re view. You will need to make application with FQHR to get your
Novice Amateur card. The Novice Amateur must also hold an individual or joint membership in FQHR.
Also, please note that you do not “Novice out” by class; it is by division. Once you (not your horse) earn a total of 10 national
points or $250 in any class or any combination of classes (even conformation), with any combination of horses, in any
division, you are no longer considered a Novice and cannot show in any Novice classes. Remember that once you begin the
year as a Novice, you can finish the year (even if you get your 10 points); that only national points (in any recognized breed
association) count; and our non-sanctioned classes (such as Beginner classes and Walk/Trot) do not count against your
Novice status as no national points are awarded in those classes.
OPEN DIVISION
The Open Division is for any rider. There are no restrictions except that the horse must be registered with FQHR to be shown
in sanctioned classes and the rider must be a member of FQHR. Points earned in the Open Division accumulate over the
lifetime of the horse and if the horse is sold, the points transfer with the horse. Also, you do not exclude yourself from showing
in the Open classes if you show in one of the other divisions. (For example, the same rider can show in both Amateur and
Open Ranch Pleasure if they quality as an Amateur.)

Explanation of Class Divisions, continued
AMATEUR DIVISION
A person is considered Amateur when he/she has not shown, judged, trained, or assisted in training a horse for remuneration,
either directly or indirectly, nor received compensation for instructing another person in riding, training, or showing a horse in
competition for five previous years. An y approved horse show judge is ineligible.
Points will be awarded following the same point system used in the Open Division. However, points in the Amateur Division are
calculated on a horse/rider basis and do not transfer with ownership.
Classes are open to both youth and adults when meeting the criteria above. No youth (under age 18) may show stallions.
In order to compete in the Amateur division a n exhibitor must present at the time of entry an Amateur card that shall be
obtained from FQHR prior to the time of entry. In order to receive the card the application along with the appropriate
fees should be submitted to the Registry at least 30 days prior to the date of entry. The Amateur exhibitor must also
hold an individual or a joint membership in FQHR.
No horse may be shown by more than one exhibitor in any class. In individual events, one exhibitor may show two horses.
An y points or awards earned in the Amateur Division at any show (roundup or affiliate) when said points are earned by an
Amateur competing under false pretenses, shall be revoked.
In the Amateur Division the exhibitor must either be the sole owner of the horse or owner of the horse under a joint membership
as stated under the membership criteria.
YOUTH DIVISION
The Youth Division is restricted to unmarried individuals 18 years and under. In order to show in Youth classes to receive points,
a youth must hold a current FQHR Youth Membership. Youth may show in Novice Amateur, Amateur (if they meet the criteria)
or Open classes under an individual or joint membership.
On the affiliate level, any youth wishing to participate in a Youth event may do so without an FQHR membership, as long as
they are riding an FQHR registered horse and are a member of OKFQHR. No national points will be awarded to that individual
or horse. All other FQHR Youth Acti vity Rules should be followed.
Youth may not exhibit stallions in any class.
Points are awarded on a one horse/one rider combination using the same criteria as the Open division and they cannot be
transferred or applied to any other horse/rider combination. Two youth in one family may exhibit the same horse on a one horse/
one rider basis but not in the same class.
An y horse exhibited by a youth in a FQHR approved Youth class must be owned by the contestant or one of the contestant’s
parents, grandparents, brother, sister or legal guardian as evidenced by records on file with FQHR for points to be awarded.
Leased horses that are owned or leased by any person than those listed above are ineligible for FQHR points in approved Youth
classes. Lease agreements must be on file with FQHR prior to the show for points to be awarded.
Horses owned by ranch, farm, etc. are ineligible to compete for FQHR points in FQHR approved Youth classes.
No horse may be shown by more than one exhibitor in any one class. In individual working events a Youth exhibitor may show
two horses.
A NOTE ON POINTS: All points earned at the affiliate level, stay at the affiliate level and do not transfer from affiliate to affiliate
or combine with other affiliate points to earn Certificates of Performance, Championships etc. If you show at the Roundup and
Review this September and earn points, those points will be kept separately as well. Points and awards can be earned in three
divisions: Open, Amateur (horse/rider combination) and Youth (horse/rider combination). The points are not transferable
between divisions nor can points earned in separate divisions be combined for a COP or Championship. Points awarded in the
Novice Amateur Division are for tracking purposes only and shall not count toward a Certificate of Performance or any other
championship.

OUR PURPOSE
The purpose of the Foundation Quarter Horse Registry is to preserve, protect, and perpetuate the working cow horse bloodlines
of the Foundation Quarter Horse by the individuals that the FQHR deems as Foundation bred. The Registry is based on blood.
The American Quarter Horse Association was organized in 1940 with similar intent. Therefore the Foundation Quarter Horse
Registry recognizes those horses listed in the first five studbooks (first 27,000 horses registered) as Foundation bred.

From the desk of Joel Shook:
We now have a letter of commitment from the Oklahoma State Fair. It is time to start rounding up
sponsorships. The best time to solicit sponsorships is usually the first of the year. We are looking forward
to the move to Oklahoma and are sure that it will be a positive one for the FQHR. Sponsorship will only
add to what we can do at this Roundup. We want to thank the Oklahoma Affiliate for all their support and
for dealing with the Oklahoma State Fair on a personal basis representing the FQHR.
From the desk of Marily n Duncan, OkFQHR President:
OkFQHR Members: The Roundup and Review coming to Oklahoma is a prime opportunity for us to increase membership and awareness of our organization both locally and nationally. The Oklahoma Affiliate
gets a monetary portion of the sponsorships whether the sponsorships are monetary or merchandise. If
you can help obtain sponsorships it will benefit both the local affiliate and the national organization.
Please be reminded that our own sponsorship drive will be in full force within the next couple of weeks as
well.
Also, we have been asked to choreograph the Opening Ceremonies which probably will take place on
Wednesday evening before the show starts. There will be a mixer following to enable everyone to get
acquainted and keep the atmosphere we all love to show in. Anyone who would like to help get that
organized please contact me.
Thanks,
Marilyn Duncan

A Horse Husband’s Lament
My wife, she has a quarter horse, with flaxen mane and tail,
She thinks he is the finest thing tha t ever jogged a rail.
She calls hi m Dandy Da rling, and if the truth I tell,
Tha t fancy pa mpered quarter horse ha s made my life pure HELL!
My wife she used to cook for ME and serve i t with cha mpagne,
Now she'd ra ther feed tha t horse and fix his special grain.
She rides hi m every morning, and grooms hi m half the night,
The last ti me tha t she kissed ME i t was just to be poli te.
He dresses better than I do, with ma tc hing wraps and ties,
My wardrobe's so neglec ted now, tha t I a ttrac t the flies.
One day my wife was shopping, she was down at the mall,
And fancy pampered DANDY was just standing in hi s stall.
He looked so smug and sassy, tha t I began to grin,
I'd saddle tha t fa t sucker, and take hi m for a spin.
I've wondered since, if cues I gave, he might have mi sconstrued,
For when I climb ed aboard tha t horse, he rightly ca me U NGLUED.
He bucked and spun, and snorted fire, and threw me through a fence.
I saw big stars and there are 6 teeth tha t I ain't hea rd from since.
My wife came home and saw me, just a lying in the dirt,
She rushed up to her HORSE and asked hi m, "Sweetheart are you HU RT?"
He'd scra tc hed his nose a littl e bit, and the memory galls me yet,
She lef t me lying in the mud, and ran to call the VET!!!
