SLG Education Foundation Luncheon Keynote Speaker: Jaslene Gonzalez With her ability to adapt, reinvent and transform, Jaslene Gonzalez has seen recurrent success in the ever changing world of fashion, modeling and entertainment. Jaslene utilized her experience as the winner of America’s Next Top Model Cycle 8 to develop and refine her craft – and evolving into one the fashion elite’s most sought-after faces. The twenty-six-year-old beauty is living her dream, scoring a multitude of modeling campaigns, ranging from coveted cosmetics giant Cover Girl to Garnier Cosmetics, to covers of Ocean Drive, Seventeen, and Latina magazines. Jaslene’s rise to fame as a leading top model is more than her natural beauty and talent – it is particularly marked by her passion and determination. Born and raised in Chicago, this AllAmerican Latina of Puerto Rican descent harbored aspirations of 25th Anniversary Retreat Delegate Packet - Page | 8 modeling even as a pre-teen: “I’d be posing in front of the mirror in my room, staring at inspirational collages of super models on my walls,” she reveals. Taking her cues from Gisele Bundchen, Liya Kebede and Tyra Banks, the ever-rising star has studied and embraced the journey to becoming a super model. Jaslene asserts, “You’ve got to live it, breathe it, feel it. Modeling is an art form and I am an artist. I take my work very seriously.” In September 2009, Jaslene transcended the modeling industries of North America and embarked on an international tour of Malaysia, Thailand, Honduras and India. While overseas, she had the honor of walking the runway for the King and Queen of Malaysia in the heralded Islamic Fashion Week. She also amassed numerous print covers and editorials, including Faces, EH!, Marie Claire, ELLE Magazine and even VOGUE India. “The experience was transformative. I was exposed to so many vastly different perceptions of beauty and fashion,” Jaslene reveals. “I was overwhelmingly honored to be a part of it.” After returning to the states in June 2012, she immediately signed with Ford in Miami as a top model on both their modeling and on-air talent boards. She is currently in Chicago represented by 10 Management. JASLENE REDIFINES THE ESSENCE OF THE SUPERMODEL As Jaslene redefines the essence of the supermodel, she remains hungry for continued success – and being true to herself. She looks forward to perfecting her craft as a model and on-camera personality, but also to extending her reach beyond magazine covers and runway lights. A confident businesswoman, Jaslene realizes the power of giving back as she molds herself into an entrepreneur. She works tirelessly on causes that revolves around empowering young women against domestic violence, fostering self love, and building inner confidence. 25th Retreat Breakout Session Overview All sessions are available each breakout block and are 55 minutes in length. Participants will review what makes them an effective networker, learn how to draft a pitch, and practice their networking skills in real-time. Hermanas Por Vida: From Collegian to Alumna "So, what are you going to do now?" It's the age-old question asked of every recent graduate. Even if you have it all figured out, you could still use a little help from your sisters. In this panel discussion, you will hear from fellow Alumnae with various backgrounds and employment experience. Learn about their career paths and how Sigma Lambda Gamma helped prepare them for life after college. Panelists will reflect on their graduations, share stories about how they scored their first jobs, and give advice on how to realistically stay involved in SLG as an Alumna member. Recent or soon to be grads will have the opportunity to network with alumnae and ask questions about careers, job searching, interviewing, and more. The Power of Amanda Gonzalez: Heart Disease Survivor Amanda was diagnosed with an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia) when she was 17, and as part of her treatment received an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). Amanda wants women to know that heart disease can affect women at any age but can have a normal life through a healthy lifestyle. Health and Wellness at the Workplace Do you ever feel like work is draining you of energy and negatively affecting your health? EmPOWER Session Presenters Three Keys to Winning at Life Presenter: Cynthia Grande Home Entity: Nu Alpha Chapter, University of Southern California How many times have we heard "that's not possible" or "you'll never make that happen" in our lives? In this presentation Cynthia will share the three key steps she discovered as a sister of Sigma Lambda Gamma to being unstoppable in fulfilling our biggest dreams and goals. Latinas in Leadership Roles Presenter: Yesenia N. Avalos, EdD Home Entity: Theta Chapter, Western Illinois University Former Sigma Lambda Gamma National President, Yesenia N. Avalos, EdD, speaks from experience. As an organization founded on empowering women and building confidence to serve as leaders, Sigma Lambda Gamma is on the forefront of creating the next generation of Latina's in leadership roles. This presentation focuses on how Latinas face obstacles on their path to leadership, but with mentors, passion and commitment we can all serve at the highest levels. 25th Anniversary Retreat Delegate Packet - Page | 10 Are You Enough? Presenter: Mandy Berenguel Smolka Home Entity: Gamma Chapter, Iowa State University Have you ever felt inadequate? Do the expectations of society get the best of you sometimes? Did you think you knew who you were, only to begin rethinking it after being questioned so many times? Listen to Mandy’s story of how meeting the women of SLG set her on an unexpected life course. Listen and watch as she delves into how dissecting her culture puts her on a path of social justice. Recognizing that living the values of SLG can be so embedded into our daily living that to notice how SLG has empowered us can be quite a task. She will break down the motto of SLG and provide an opportunity for sisters to reflect on what it means to them. The POWER of ME Presenter: Yesenia Ramirez Home Entity: Beta Delta Chapter, Chicago State University As a woman with a disability, Yesenia wants to show all women that they can be whatever they want to be and do whatever they want to do. It doesn't matter if they have a disability or not, they have the ability to achieve their highest point in life. Yesenia was born with cerebral palsy caused by premature birth. She has struggled with it her whole life, but has always had family to uplift her. In this presentation Yesenia will share how being a Gamma intensified her strong support system and made her appreciate the multicultural backgrounds of herself and others. Living out the entire SLG Value System Presenter: Dionne Gomez Home Entity: Gamma Epsilon Chapter, DePauw University You've become a member of SLG. You made it. What’s next? Neo-fever, recruitment, study groups, running information sessions, parties, graduation and so on. We often get caught up in the excitement of being a Gamma and find ourselves “talking the talk” about what it means to be a Gamma, however, we struggle to "walk the walk". The Mission, Purpose, Vision, Creed and Principles are the essence of Sigma Lambda Gamma. Without one of these we are not living up to who we can be as Women of Distinction, during and after graduation. By using herself and others as an example, Dionne will reinforce what it truly means to live out the ENTIRE SLG Value System in all that we do. 25th Anniversary Retreat Delegate Packet - Page | 11 My Journey of Empowerment Presenter: Anissa A. Parra Home Entity: Delta Alpha Chapter, University of Kansas In this inspiring presentation, Anissa shares how coming to terms with and addressing the sexual abuse in her family was not only terrifying as she hit rock bottom, but one of the most empowering thing she could ever do for herself. She walks us through her personal journey of how releasing control and fear increased her passion for life. Getting rid of the “one days”, “maybes” and “somedays” and transforming them to “this is how I will do it” is the most inspiring thing for others around you to witness. A Determined Heart Presenter: Nicole Alers Home Entity: Psi Beta Chapter, Florida A&M University Nicole was the only one of her friends in high school to move away for college. In this presentation Nicole will recount how SLG helped her find a new home in an unfamiliar world and how the bonds created through this sisterhood helped support her through uncertain times. Finally, Nicole will talk about her exciting experiences as an alumna and show how alumnae can still play an integral role in SLG today! Be Your Personal Best Presenter: Crystal Cavey Home Entity: Eta Chapter, Northern Illinois University In this presentation Crystal will be outlining her life as the first in her family to attend college and graduate, her positive growing experiences in SLG, her weight loss journey, being a corporate mom of two, happiness in marriage, competition in pageantry and volunteerism in the community. Be Your Personal Best is her own personal platform which is focused around doing more for others, giving back, and a commitment to community. 25th Anniversary Retreat Delegate Packet - Page | 12 Sigma Lambda Gamma On-Site Vendors Sigma Lambda Gamma Partnerships 25th Anniversary Retreat Delegate Packet - Page | 13 Drive to 25 Recognition The following entities were able to achieve a minimum of 2500 point in the Drive to 25 programming initiative during the 2014-2015 academic school year.
