/ Traffic trends at Munich Airport
in 2014
All previous records in passenger traffic and air freight were broken in 2014.
The strength of the catchment area was a key factor in the
successful development of traffic trends at Munich Airport in
2014. All previous records – with the exception of the number
of take-offs and landings – were broken in 2014. Passenger
numbers almost touched the 40 million mark and air freight
exceeded 290,000 tons.
In an international comparison with Europe's largest airports,
Munich captured sixth spot in terms of flight movements and
seventh for the number of passengers.
These results are all the more remarkable in view of the
difficult market situation for the traditional large European
airlines: Strikes and consolidation were the buzzwords in
2014. The pressure to consolidate that had prevailed in
previous years continued in European aviation.
The established premium airlines face mighty competition. In
traffic within Europe, the low-cost carriers are increasingly
training their sights on business travellers and so the core
business of traditional airlines, while the emerging hubs in
Turkey and the Gulf region are booming on the long-haul
routes to Asia. The attempts by the affected airlines to make
their structures viable for the future by consolidating and
cutting costs through founding new companies or shifting
their offerings to their own low-cost subsidiaries are meeting
with resistance from employees and unions. A wave of strikes
at Lufthansa, strikes at Air France and TAP Air Portugal,
general strikes in Belgium, Italy and Greece, as well as strikes
among security staff at German airports, had an adverse
impact on air travel in the past year.
2,200 take-offs and landings at Munich Airport were
cancelled due to strikes, affecting more than 230,000
passengers.
The political crises in Ukraine and the Middle East only had a
mild impact on air traffic trends in 2014.
The German airlines also continue to suffer from the burden
of the air traffic tax that was introduced in 2011, in particular
for domestic flights, where this tax – plus value-added tax –
is due both on the outbound and return journeys.

MUC is the most on-time airport
The British company OAG, a provider of travel information,
named Munich Airport the world's most punctual airport,
ahead of Tokyo Haneda and Seattle. Almost 90 percent of all
flights were on time – an impressive figure for a hub.
The airport also achieved very good or even its best-ever
results for other key performance indicators. The number of
available seats was 52 million, a record number. The figure
per flight was 148, four more than the previous year.
Nevertheless, the load factor increased to a new high: 75.9
percent, meaning an average of more than three out of four
seats were occupied. That corresponds to 113 passengers a
flight, five more than the year before.
Trend towards larger aircrafts continues
The reasons for the huge increase in these average figures
per flight is the continuing trend whereby smaller aircraft are
being replaced by larger ones. The average maximum take off
mass (MTOM) exceeded the 80-ton mark, rising by 3.7 tons
to 82.5. The offering can be expanded further, especially at
peak periods, only through the use of larger aircraft. In
addition, intercontinental travel, which is largely served by
large craft, proven again to be a driver. The share of
widebody aircraft in commercial traffic increased to 8
percent of all take-offs and landings.
Overall, the number of flight movements declined by 1.4
percent in 2014. Most of the reductions were due to
decommissioning of turboprop aircraft at Lufthansa and Air
Dolomiti, which impacted traffic within Germany and with
other European countries. This restructuring of the fleet was
continued in 2014 and will be completed in 2015.
91 airlines (2013: 94) regularly served destinations with
scheduled or charter services, seven of them with cargo
transport alone. Newcomers to Munich Airport in 2014
included the airlines Air Europa, Estonian Air and Eurolot.
Carpat Air, Czech Airlines and the now insolvent companies
OLT, Sky Airlines, Belle Air Europe and Hamburg Airways were
no longer in the flight plan.
Best month – again September
The top month in 2014 was September with 33,450
commercial flight movements. The highest figure for a single
day was 1,183 take-offs and landings on June 6, 2014, the
Friday before the start of the Whitsun holidays.

Growth in the catchment area
In 2014, the highest number of passengers for a month was
again recorded in September. As a result, September was the
month where there was greatest demand: more than 3.8
million passengers. The top day, which as so often is the
Friday of the first week of the Oktoberfest, was in September.
Almost 145,000 passengers used Munich Airport on
September 26.
Munich in comparison – 7th in Europe
Internationally, Munich Airport ranked 7th among Europe’s
airports with the most passengers. Munich remains 6th in
terms of flight movements.
Destinations and countries
Although the range of flights to domestic destinations was
reduced further compared with the previous year, demand
was stable and aircraft capacity utilisation increased. 9.4
million passengers were carried on 86,000 flights within
Germany. The number of take-offs and landings fell by 3
percent, while the number of available seats dropped by 2
percent. The trend in domestic traffic was primarily
influenced by the airlines' consolidation measures, but also
by strike action in 2014. The number of domestic
destinations remained constant. Saarbrücken, which was
served last year until OLT went insolvent, was no longer flown
to in 2014, whereas Heringsdorf on the Baltic Sea island of
Usedom, which was served on a seasonal basis in the
summer, was newly included in the flight plan.

Whereas it was hub traffic that mainly accounted for the
growth in passenger numbers in past years, point-to-point
traffic from and to Munich contributed above-proportionate
growth in 2014. Originating passengers, i.e. the passengers
who use the catchment area of Munich Airport as the starting
point or destination of their journey, increased by just around
6 percent. The proportion of transit passengers accordingly
rose by almost 2 percent to 37 percent. This trend is also
attributable to the hub's new structure, with six peak traffic
times a day instead of eight. Decommissioning of the smaller
turboprops, sometimes without a replacement for them,
meant that traffic was focused on larger aircraft with lower
frequencies.

A new passenger record was set at 39.7 million, so the 40
million mark is within grasp. In 2014, 1 million more
passengers than in the previous year used Munich Airport to
travel worldwide.
Continental traffic
The continental region posted an average performance. 24.1
million passengers used 239,000 flights. Whereas this traffic
region also shows signs of consolidation and fleet conversion
at Lufthansa, airlines like Air Europa, which started operating
for the first time from Munich, and the low-cost airlines
Vueling and Norwegian Air Shuttle tried successfully to win
passengers and market share with new or additional
offerings. In particular, destinations in Spain (Madrid, Malaga,
Alicante, the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands)
benefited from the new offerings. The additional services
usually resulted in genuine growth, i.e. new or additional
customers were able to be reached with them. Although the
Passengers 2014
share of low-cost airlines at Munich Airport is still low, the
number of passengers flying with these airlines increased by
a quarter to more than one million.
Spain was the big winner in 2014. An increase of half a
million passengers – or almost 16 percent – meant the
number of passengers from or to Spain surged above the 3
million mark to 3.3 million or one-third of Munich's domestic
volume. Following the slumps due to the economic crisis,
Greece experienced a real boom; Italy and Turkey also
notched up high growth. The passenger numbers for
vacation destinations in North Africa recovered well for
Tunisia, while Morocco even chalked up a new record thanks
to the Casablanca connection that Royal Air Maroc launched
in December of the previous year. Only Egypt failed to match
the result of the previous year, due to the unrest that keeps
on flaring up there.
Destinations in Eastern Europe, which had been growth
engines in past years, trended a little more weakly. The Polish
airline LOT removed Katowice, Poznań and, in the course of
the year, Wrocław from the flight plan. Estonian's Tallinn
connection was not able to compensate for the flight
Lufthansa discontinued. The political crisis in Ukraine and
the Crimea conflict prevented a better performance by the
new flights of Air Ukraine International to Kiev and, in
general, traffic with Ukraine and Russia, on which sanctions
have been imposed. The flights offered to crisis regions were
largely maintained. Only Donezk, the embattled city in
Eastern Ukraine, was removed from the flight plan by
Lufthansa.
Overall, the trouble spots in Ukraine, Israel, Syria and Iraq
have only had very little impact on overall developments so
far.
Intercontinental traffic
With growth rates in the high single digits, intercontinental
traffic is once again a key driver in traffic trends at Munich
Airport. Among the intercontinental regions, the American
continent posted the highest increases. More than half the
growth in passenger numbers in long-haul traffic as a whole
was accounted for by the new destinations Houston, Mexico
City and the winter destination of Miami. Apart from doubling
of the frequencies to Toronto, the significantly expanded
offering to holiday destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico
also contributed to a successful trend in long-haul traffic.
In traffic with Asia, it was once again the carriers from the
region around the Persian Gulf that dominated with doubledigit growth rates. After Qatar Airways increased its
frequencies in 2013, Etihad has now doubled its flights to
Abu Dhabi to two a day. Oman Air increased its offering to
Muscat to five departures a week and has announced its

intention to fly daily. Emirates now serves Dubai twice a day
with an Airbus A380. However, passenger numbers in direct
flights to the Indian subcontinent and the Far East declined
slightly. One reason for that was that the offerings were
reduced, in some cases considerably. For example, All Nippon
Airways cut the number of seats available to Tokyo by one
third by switching from the B777 (247 seats) to the new
B787 Dreamliner (158 seats). A further cause was the great
competition resulting from the fact that the Gulf airlines
12
expanded their transit connections via their hubs.
The number of passengers in long-haul traffic increased
overall by 7 percent to a total of 6.2 million.
The most passengers in intercontinental traffic were on
connections to the U.S., the United Arab Emirates and China.
The intercontinental destination for which there was greatest
demand was, as in the year before, Dubai ahead of Newark.

The most successful traffic segment
Air freight transshipments – i.e. the cargo loaded and
unloaded – was the most successful traffic segment with
the highest growth rate in 2014. 291,475 tons of air freight
– an increase of 8 percent – is a new record.
This basis for this excellent trend was the volume of cargo
carried on passenger flights (bellyhold freight), whose share
accounts for around 85 percent of the total volume. The new
destinations and increases in frequency in intercontinental
traffic ensures sufficient loading capacity; the in some cases
double-digit increase in demand meant high growth in
absolute terms.
All-cargo services, i.e. where air freight is transported by
cargo aircraft only, increased by more than one fifth and
played a major part in setting the new record. In particular air
freight on the new or taken-over services of Atran Cargo to
Liège and Moscow and of Air Bridge Cargo (ABC), likewise to
Moscow and distributed from there to ABC's network,
stimulated the volume shipped in all-cargo services.
The volume of air mail was around 18,000 tons and so at the
same level as the previous year. Cargo transshipment (the
total tonnage of air freight and air mail) thus surpassed the
300,000 ton mark for the second time after 2011.
