DATE
Singapore enjoys warm tropical weather throughout the year.
Temperatures reaches a maximum of about 34°C during
the day, falling to around 23°C during evening hours.

The unit of currency is the Singapore Dollar (S$).
For currency exchange, banks and money changers are
located in most shopping centres and at the airport.

TIPPING
Tipping is not the general custom in Singapore. It is
prohibited at the airport and discouraged in hotels
and restaurants, where 10% service charge, 5% goods
and services tax (GST) are included in the bill.
TRANSPORT
Inexpensive public transport is readily available in
Singapore. The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system offers
quick access to all parts of the island. An extensive
network of buses also plies the entire island. Taxis are
plentiful and may be hailed 24 hrs a day on most roads.

Katherine J. Mearns, ISPA
Sheila Cluff, The Oaks at Ojai
Kate Mearns, the newly appointed Chairman of the International
Spa Association (ISPA), is the consummate spa professional. Joining
the industry in its relative infancy ten years ago, Ms. Mearns began
her spa career as a fitness instructor and sales manager working
closely with one of the founding members of ISPA and the owner
of Coolfont Resort & Spa, one of the nation’s best known destination
spa properties. The next year, Ms. Mearns was promoted to Spa
and Fitness Director, responsible for program development, recruiting,
training and managing staff, and financial administration of the
spa. In 1996 Ms. Mearns joined Fortune 100 giant Anheuser-Busch
to open a spa at their prestigious, Four-Star Kingsmill Resort in
historic Williamsburg, Virginia.
Sheila Cluff is the owner of sister spas, The Oaks at Ojai and The
Palms at Palm Springs, in addition to being president and founder
of Fitness Inc., Fit Two and health Holidays Inc. Sheila has authored
four books, publishes Spa Update, a newsletter with 50,000 circulation;
writes several syndicated columns on fitness; has produced four
fitness videos and is a founding member of the Committee of 200,
is a past member of the governor’s Council on Physical Fitness
and serves on the Intercontinental Hotels Advisory Travel Board,
the C200 foundation board and the International Spa Association
(ISPA) education foundation board.
Ms. Mearns has represented the company and the spa industry on
Travel Channel, in lectures and clinics, and has written numerous
articles for spa/fitness industry publications.
Dr Luisa Lee, Eu Yan Sang Integrative Health
Dr. Luisa Lee is the Managing Director of Eu Yan Sang International
Ltd. She was the former Medical Director of the Training and
health Education Department of the Ministry of Health. Prior to
joining Eu Yan Sang, she was CEO of Woodbridge Hospital and
subsequently Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the National Healthcare
Group’s New Ventures Division.
Mabel Chia-Yarrall, Eu Yan Sang Integrative
Health
Mabel Chia-Yarrall is the Marketing & Health Promotion Manager
for Integrative Health at Eu Yan Sang. After graduating from the
University of California (Berkeley), she worked in health promotion
and social marketing, managing major programmes and campaigns
in Singapore and New Zealand in the health sector. She has worked
for the World Health Organisation as a temporary consultant/advisor
in countries as diverse as the Maldives, Sweden and China.
Dr Geraldine Mitton, Sante Winelands Hotel and
Wellness Centres
Dr Geraldine Mitton is Medical Director of the Sante Wellness
Group, the first custom built spa in South Africa.
Dr Mitton is recognized as the doyenne of wellness in South Africa
and is a pioneer in integrated medicine and wellness. She is a
medical doctor, a former emergency physician, and former director
of a large medical spa. More recently her focus has turned to antiageing
and rejuvenation, a subject on which she has lectured and written
extensively.
She studies international trends and her studies include sauna culture
in Helsinki, Kneipp therapy in Bad Worishofen, Dead sea mud
therapy in Israel, fango therapy in Abano Montegrotto, thalassotherapy
in France, and Chinese traditional medicine in Xian, China.
Dr Mitton is Vice president of the World Federation of Thalassotherapy
based in Paris.
Mr Bibiano S. Fajardo, Association of Traditional
Health Aid Givers
Mr. Fajardo is a Chemical Engineer by profession who has long
taken a keen interest in Philippine traditional healing. He has undertaken
intensive research, observation and actual involvement with Philippine
Traditional Healers called "Arbularyos" and their methodology.
Mr Fajardo is now actively involved in providing additional training
to Traditional Healers to standardize and certify them. He also
assists Health Workers and other interested people to become Health
Aid Givers. He has also done research on "Framework on Modalities
of the Wholistic Approach to Healing", "Attitudes and Practices
of Multisectoral Groups on Traditional Medicine and Health Care",
"Comparative Studies of the North America, Wholistic and Indigineous
Approaches to Healing", among others....
Dr S. Ajit, Shree Ayurvedic Rejuvenation & Spa
Centre
Dr S. Ajit graduated from the Indian Ayurvedic College Patiala
Punjabi University and worked as a Government Ayurvedic Medical
Officer for nearly 20 years. In 1996, he set up a successful Ayurvedic
clinic in Auckland, New Zealand and developed the most extensive
practitioners training format outside of India through his college,
the Australasian Institute of Ayurvedic Studies.
Dr S. Ajit has presented regular workshops in Australia, U.S.A
and New Zealand. He is presently the only Ayurvedic Doctor in
the western world with nearly 20 years of clinical experience working
in Government Ayurvedic Hospitals.
He is also the founding patron of the Australasian Ayurvedic
Practitioners Association (NZ and Australia) and the President of
the International Council of Ayurvedic Medicine.
Dr Pakpilai Thavisin, S Art & Science
(Medical Spa)
Dr Pakpilai Thavisin is a trained medical professional at the cuttingedge of a newly integrated approach to the treatment of many of
the afflictions of the modern era. She has had extensive experience
both within Thailand and internationally and is recognized as a
leading practitioner in her field in Thailand and the region. Dr
Thavisin is the President of S Art & Science (Medical Spa), one
of the most luxurious and newest rejuvenating center in the heart
of Bangkok.

Shelley Siu, Shelley Siu International Group Pte
Ltd
Founder/Chairman/CEO Shelley Siu, of Shelley Siu International
Group Pte Ltd is Singapore’s first e-author. A HRD consultant,
professional Speaker, National Speakers Association Professional
Category Member, USA, and a representative of ASTD in the Human
Performance Improvement Certificate Programme, Shelley is an
alliance partner of several well-established, professional international
organizations.
Shelley’s forte is in speaking, experiential training in the hospitality
sector, corporate and personal branding, and through FemmE-net,

Leanne T. Lovatt, Heritage Healers
Recognised for her introduction of unique healing concepts to the
beauty and spa industries, Leanne T. Lovatt is the founder of the
holistic skin care company, Heritage Healers. She is a licensed
beauty therapist with over 25 years hands-on experience, a previous
spa owner, educator and pioneer in the field of holistic beauty
therapy.
Throughout her career, Leanne has worked closely with specialists
in natural therapies, leaders and experts in the fields of flower
essence therapy and energetic healing modalities.
As a consultant to Australia's most prestigious spas, Leanne is
renowned for her wellness therapies and programs, implementing
unique treatment protocols that combine modern science with ancient
principles, traditions and wisdom.
Kimberly Anne Collier, JAMU Asian Spa Rituals,
Inc
Founder and president of JAMU Asian Spa Rituals and Vice President
of Collier & Collier Spa Consultants International, Kim Collier
has extensive international spa experience. Kim has worked in
positions such as Spa Director and consultant for spas in Hong
Kong, Bali, Thailand, Philippines, Dubai and more countries. Kim
conducts and coordinates accredited training programmes in the
United States and oversees the North American distribution of
JAMU.
Linda Brewer, Beautiful Forever
Currently the COO for Beautiful Forever, a medical spa consulting
company. Formally, the Director of Spa Operations for one of the
world’s largest recreation and leisure management firms providing
planning assistance, design consultation and daily operations for
spas, fitness centers, tennis facilities and residential community
centers throughout the United States and abroad. Linda Brewer
also acted as the temporary spa director at four spas making sure
they were profitable and opened five additional spas.
Pete Ellis, Spa Finder Company
Pete Ellis has a background in using technology and innovative
marketing strategies to redefine entire industries.
In 2000, Ellis assumed the role of CEO as well as Chairman,
spearheading Spa Finder’s ascension as the largest spa marketing,
publishing and travel agent services company. Under Ellis, Spa
Finder has worked to connect the players that comprise the oncedisjointed spa market - day and stay spas, spa merchandisers,
consumers, marketing partners, travel agents - in creative, opportunistic
ways that introduce new value and efficiencies for all parties.
Ellis was honored by Advertising Age as one of the top marketers
in the U.S.
Robert D. Henry, Robert D. Henry Architects
Bob Henry is the principal of Robert D. Henry Architects, an award
winning, internationally recognized architectural and interior design
firm, specializing in spa and hospitality design. Leading his firm,
Bob has produced such notable works as Wynn Resorts Spa in
Las Vegas, the Mar a Lago Club and Spa in Palm Beach and the
DePasquale Day – Spa. He has lectured internationally discussing
his unique Design Philosophy, which is devoted to the “empirical
experience”; where guests engage all their senses in his projects.
More recently he was honored with the “Gold Key Award” from
Hospitality Design for the Ajune – Medical Spa in New York City.
He is currently working on a book featuring the best Spa’s in the
world which is due out in 2005.
Hugh Jones
Hugh Jones has been in the spa & fitness industry for 21 years
and has successfully directed spa programmes in several 5-star
hotels, resorts and planned communities. Hugh has also written
several articles for Spa Magazines and has made many presentations
at professional national and international conferences on planning
for profits within the spa, recruiting and managing spa staff, and
reviewing existing spa operations to improve service and profitability.
During his many years as a Spa Director, Hugh has mentored many
staff that have gone on to become successful Spa Directors at
several prestigious properties.
Since 2000, Hugh has been involved with spa design and development
in successful national and international projects in Switzerland,
Canada, USA and New Zealand.
Jane Segerberg, JGL Spa Design and Consulting
Jane Segerberg is the Senior Consultant of JGL Inc. Spa Design
& Consulting and is involved in all aspects of spa consulting including
concept and facility design, operations and program development,
staffing and training, marketing, facility openings and ongoing spa
management. Her experience includes more than 25 years in the
travel and wellness industry.
Segerberg served on the ISPA Board of Directors for eight years,
including three elected terms as the ISPA president from 1997 to
2000 and was instrumental in taking ISPA global, particularly into
the Asian markets. In 2003, she received the ISPA Dedicated
Contributor award.
