SOUTH TEXAS WILDLIFE CKWRI 25th ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL ISSUE J. R. THOMASSON A publication of the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University-Kingsville Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of CKWRI by Charity Kraft This newsletter issue comes to you a little differently. We have put together an array of photos that highlight the activities of the 25th Anniversary Celebration held during the week of April 4–8. It was among friends and family that the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute celebrated its 25th Anniversary, almost 60 years to the day since Caesar Kleberg himself passed away. It was a celebration of Caesar’s life and his vision for wildlife conservation, and the legacy he put in motion. The Symposium began on April 5th at the Omni Bayfront Hotel in Corpus Christi. A main goal of this symposium was to discuss up-to-date information linking ecological theory and management applications. We had a remarkable lineup of 20 national and international speakers—among the best in their field. They covered topics such as avian ecology, conservation of wild cats, bear ecology and management, ungulate ecology, habitat management, wildlife diseases, wildlife genetics, social aspects of wildlife conservation, and the relationship between wildlife and ranching. Our guest speakers were honored with the Caesar Kleberg Medallion for Excellence in Wildlife Science. This event marked the inaugural presenta- tion of these medallions intended to honor individuals who have exhibited the highest standard of dedication and excellence in wildlife science. Drs. Charles DeYoung and Ralph Bingham, both of CKWRI, also received the Caesar Kleberg Medallion for their outstanding contributions. Other activities held during the week included tours on the King Ranch, where participants had the opportunity to visit the Encino, Norias, and Santa Gertrudis divisions. In honor of past and current faculty, staff, and students, a reunion dinner was also part of the festivities in the Pinnell Auditorium at the Tio and Janell Kleberg Wildlife Research Park. The celebrations ended with a gala on Saturday evening where CKWRI Summer 2006 Volume 10, No. 2 friends and family gathered to commemorate the legacy of Caesar Kleberg, his vision for wildlife conservation, and the birth of CKWRI. At this event, Tio Kleberg presented Caesar Kleberg Medallions to Leroy G. Denman, Jr. and Dr. Duane M. Leach (both trustees of Caesar Kleberg Foundation for Wildlife Conservation) and Fred Bryant, CKWRI Director, for their dedication and outstanding contributions to wildlife conservation. We are grateful to our many friends who attended this celebration and to those who have supported the vision of Caesar Kleberg and CKWRI throughout the years. We extend our thanks to those who helped make this event a huge success.
