To get a sense of perspective from where we can gauge our current situation, let us first refresh our memories on how the last few years have played out at the box office. Take a look at the table below: Annual Cumulative Collections 2009-2015 Vajir Singh Year Number of Releases Total Domestic NBOC vajir@boxofficeindia.co.in 2009 91 `1201 Crore 2010 150 `1537 Crore 2011 128 `1769 Crore 2012 149 `2392 Crore 2013 174 `2818 Crore 2014 196 `2738 Crore 2015 208 `2766 Crore CHIEF SUB-EDITOR Carol Lobo HEAD OF DESK Shikha Saroj Gupta shikha@boxofficeindia.co.in PRINCIPAL CORRESPONDENT Rohini Nag rohini@boxofficeindia.co.in CORRESPONDENT Soumita Sengupta soumita@boxofficeindia.co.in Swagata Panjari swagata@boxofficeindia.co.in Quick summary: right from the year this publication launched, 2009, up to the end of 2013, we witnessed a phase of expansion at the box office with each succeeding year registering a growth of at least 10 per cent over the previous year. However, that trend reversed in 2014, which was a year of regression and matters barely improved in 2015. Now that we know where we are coming from, let us see if we can glean some clues about where we are headed on the basis of how this year has unfolded so far. Check out the table below that lists the total domestic box office collections in the first quarter of each year for the last few years. Change Over Q1, Previous Year Average NBOC Per Film Change Over Q1, Previous Year `9.6 Crore First, the good news. The numbers certainly show that the January to March period this year has registered a very decent gain over the corresponding period in 2015. This is true on both counts – the cumulative collections of all films and the average collections per film. A rise of over 36 per cent is substantial indeed, and all the more welcome considering the decline seen during the first quarter of the two preceding years. Some may point out that Q1, 2015 was affected by the ODI Cricket World Cup that took place during that period, but the counter to that would be the fact that we have seen plenty of cricket this year too, with the Asia Cup and the ICC World T20 Cup, and at telecast timings that were much more India-friendly than the ODI World Cup. Another very heartening statistic: Q1 2016 has been the highest grossing first quarter on record. But before we uncork the champagne, let’s put these numbers in perspective. Yes, the recently ended quarter’s collections are the highest ever for that period, but they are only marginally higher than those recorded during the same period in 2013 and 2014. And when you factor in the substantially higher number of films that released this year, the average collections per film weigh in as the third lowest during the eight years under review. In fact, one disheartening way to interpret the data is to realise that the average film makes less money now, than it did seven years ago. That said, as we all know, sentiment in the film business is driven by how good or bad the most immediate yesterday fared, rather than the glory or horror days of yore. And on the evidence of the data above, we are certainly on a better wicket now than we were at the same time last year. The onus now is on the films scheduled for release during the rest of the year, to ensure that the decent start provided by Q1 becomes a platform to make 2016 a year of recovery for the trade. REG: MAHENG/2009/56446 Nitin Tej Ahuja 9 April 2016 Box Office India 03 TAKE ONE In Recovery Mode? India’s Premier Film Trade Magazine GOLD REVIEWS Love Games Banners: T-Series, Vishesh Films Producers: Mukesh Bhatt, T-Series Director: Vikram Bhatt Cast: Gaurav Arora, Patralekhaa, Tara Alisha Berry, Hiten Tejwani Writer: Vikram Bhatt Music: Sangeet Haldipur and Siddharth Haldipur V ishesh Films is known for featuring bold realities backed by an element of thrill. In keeping with this, their latest release Love Games doesn’t shy away from rave parties, infidelity, drugs, alcohol and sex… elements of high society. The film also highlights social issues such as domestic violence, child abuse and depression. A cocktail of all these factors blended with betrayal makes for the gist of Love Games. The film starts with businessman Raichand falling down from his penthouse to his death. The investigation that follows introduces Ramona Raichand (Patralekhaa), his very young wife. It is soon revealed that Ramona isn’t the typically depressed wife but a gold-digger and also her husband’s killer. Ramona shares a purely lusty relationship with Sameer (Gaurav Arora), son of a rich businessman who is prone to self-harm. As if their antics weren’t enough, Ramona and Sameer decide to spice up their life by playing a game based on the novel Love Games. According to the rules, Ramona and Sameer will both attend high society parties and target married couples and will go on to have a physical relationships with the partner of the opposite sex. The one who succeeds first, wins the ‘game’. During one such ‘game’, Sameer crosses paths with Alisha Asthana (Tara Alisha Berry), a surgeon who is in an abusive relationship. Her husband Gaurav Asthana (Hiten Tejwani) is a famous advocate. While playing the game, Sameer eventually falls in love with Alisha. When Ramona finds out about their relationship, she starts blackmailing Sameer. Will their love win or will they succumb to the evil plans of Ramona is what makes for the crux of the film. The film is built on an interesting concept which is also a kind of first in Indian cinema but one wishes Vikram Bhatt as the writer had done a better job. Worse, many scenes that are well written and handled well have been marred by poor acting thus they fail to make an impression. Vikram Bhatt pushes the envelope once again by dealing with subjects that are barely acknowledged in public. Sadly, there’s a lot that’s left unexplained because there is scant attention to detail. Also, the film is supposedly set in Mumbai but it largely features locales in South Africa, which is quite evident on screen. Cinematography is good and being a Bhatt production, it fairs well on the music front. Performance-wise, Gaurav Arora, who makes his debut with this film, appears indifferent throughout the film. Patralekhaa’s performance is good in some scenes but she mostly fails on dialogue delivery. Tara Alisha Berry does a decent job but she doesn’t have a whole lot of screen time. Hiten Tejwani is good. Verdict: An interesting concept but poor detailing and performances will make it difficult for the film to sustain. The Jungle Book Banner: Walt Disney Pictures Producers: Jon Favreau, Brigham Taylor Director: Jon Favreau Cast: Neel Sethi Voices: Irrfan, Nana Patekar, Om Puri, Priyanka Chopra, Shefali Shah Writers: Rudyard Kipling (book), Justin Marks: Hindi - Mayur Puri Music: Jon Debney: Hindi - Vishal Dadlani T he Jungle Book is a delightful mix of visual magic and a multilayered storyline. Moving far away from the earlier versions of The Jungle Book as we know it, from the animated film versions to the Doordarshan Sunday treat of the ‘90s, the latest offering from Walt Disney Pictures is an evocative story of Mowgli’s (Neel Sethi) antics and survival deep in the jungle. Since the latest version caters to both children as well as adults, it has humour, action, nail-biting chase sequences, every conceivable animal one can think of brilliantly woven into the script, cutting-edge CG, and more… much much more. One of the biggest highlights of this film is that it has not been dumbed down for its little viewers, neither visually nor in the writing. Given that this is primarily such a big summer attraction for children, there is no dearth of edge-of-the-seat action, a case in point being the chase sequence with wild buffaloes as Mowgli is hunted down by Shere Khan; his encounter with orangutans including the mammoth King Louie and the final fight sequence. There is no dearth of emotions either, and one chokes up in several scenes. There is also plenty of humour, especially Karo Dil Ki 04 Box Office India 9 April 2016 when Baloo makes his entrance and makes Mowgli work hard so that he can have his fill of honey before he becomes the kid’s best friend. A special mention of the scenes between the python Kaa and Mowgli as the viewer too gets entranced due to Kaa’s hypnotic eyes, the deep jungle imagery and her smooth-as-silk voice and the one where Mowgli is resting on Baloo’s ample tummy as he floats in the river singing to the kid. Director Favreau’s biggest strength in this film is that he has successfully managed to break away from the kids’ genre and taken the narrative to a far more expansive level. With a run time of 106 minutes, The Jungle Book, being the amazing package that it is, seems far too short as one simply can’t get tired of watching this wonderfully lush film. In times when gadgets are overtaking play time, The Jungle Book is a fitting reminder of the simple pleasures of childhood. As for performances, Neel Sethi is the only live actor in this film and he is brilliant as Mowgli. His expressions, body language, dialogue delivery and everything about him is just perfect. As for the voiceovers, having famous actors like Irrfan, Nana Patekar, Om Puri, Priyanka Chopra and Shefali Shah seems to have worked beautifully as each one has done justice to their respective parts. Verdict: Do Not Miss! A sure-shot HIT. Sardaar Gabbar Singh Banners: Pawan Kalyan Creative Works, Northstar Entertainment, Eros International Producers: Sunil Lulla, Sharrath Marar Director: KS Ravindra (Bobby) Cast: Pawan Kalyan, Kajal Aggarwal, Sharad Kelkar Writers: Pawan Kalyan (story & screenplay), Sai Madhav Burra (dialogue) Music: Devi Sri Prasad B efore we jump right in, let’s answer one question: At a time when South masala movies are not finding any takers among Hindi movie-goers, even when they feature BIG names from the Hindi industry, should this production house have dubbed this movie from Telugu into Hindi and released it on such a big scale? The answer is a BIG ‘NO’. There is no doubt this film unabashedly caters to an audience who believes in maar-dhaad – front-benchers! No wonder South dubbed films get great TRPs on television and many of our Hindi masala entertainers are remakes of these movies. But, in today’s times, these movies are not attracting the paying audience. Expectations of high-voltage action sequences lead you to believe you have made the right choice. But, after the opening action sequence, which establishes the protagonist and his fight for what is right, you’re left waiting for another shot of adrenaline. What you get is over-the-top drama, a little romance and a lot of lacklustre scenes. Pawan Kalyan’s failed attempt at delivering a masala entertainer, Sardaar Gabbar Singh, is the second instalment of the 2012 hit film Gabbar Singh, the official remake of Salman Khan’s Dabangg. The film starts with a brief introduction of police officer Sardaar Gabbar Singh (Pawan Kalyan) and his antics. Gabbar is posted in a small town called Rattanpur, which is in the clutches of a ruthless royal warlord, Bhairo Singh (Sharad Kelkar), whose wrath knows no bounds. Gabbar doesn’t immediately reveal the terror that he is but fools around and is not taken seriously by anyone and fails to impress the royal minder (Mukesh Rishi). Meanwhile, Gabbar saves the local princess Arshi (Kajal Aggarwal) from falling off a cliff and the two soon fall in love. Meanwhile, Bhairo lays eyes on Arshi and decides to make her his second wife. How the story unfolds forms the crux of the film. As mentioned earlier, there’s no real story line; just plain old ‘good versus bad’ and, of course, good conquers all odds. The film is an out-and-out masala film, something we last watched in the ‘70s, ‘80s and early ‘90s. Despite this, it is richly impressive in bits and pieces. The impressive introduction of Kalyan in the beginning of the film captivates you in an instant. The best part of this film is the action and some very funny moments. But the story really picks up just before the interval. Despite being a joyride, there are a few lacunae. When they live fairly close to each other, why does Bhairo fall for Arshi only after Gabbar comes to town? Gabbar, despite training his subordinates, always fights alone. There are many such misses in the narration. Music is another drawback. Background score is average. Editing by Gautham Raju could have been much better. Cinematography by Arthur A Wilson is good. Performance-wise, the film belongs to Kalyan from the very first frame. He is sturdy when it comes to action and adorable when it comes to comedy. Kajal Aggarwal looks flawless and plays her part well. Sharad Kelkar is fantastic and emotes wonderfully. Brahmanandam and Tanikella Bharani makes you laugh. Mukesh Rishi makes his presence felt. The others, from Posani Krishna Murali to Brahmaji, Pradeep Rawat, Tisca Chopra, Rao Ramesh, Raai Laxmi and Kabir Duhan Singh support well. The rest of the actors do justice to their respective parts. Verdict: Dud. Ashutosh Gowariker who is known for making larger than life films recently wrapped the final schedule of Mohenjo Daro yesterday (April 8) on the auspicious day of Gudi Padwa in Mumbai. Starring Hrithik Roshan and introducing Pooja Hegde, the film is produced by Siddharth Roy Kapur and Sunita Gowariker, and is all set to release on Independence Day weekend, August 12, 2016. Neeraj To Produce Chhalang N eeraj Pandey is one of those rare filmmakers who has always chosen stories from real life. And biopics are his favorite as he believes our society has so many stories to tell. So when Shivam Nair was struggling to get a producer for his biopic, Chhalang, Pandey happily came on board as soon as Nair narrated it to him. A source close to the production house reveals, “Chhalang is based on a real incident – a Nagpur boy who was physically challenged and who climbed the Mount Everest. Shivam had already signed Amit Sadh to play the lead role but was not getting producers. So when he approached Neeraj with the script, he loved it and now Neeraj’s production house Friday Filmworks will be producing Chhalang.” The film will go on the floors early next year. Sadh will actually climb the mountain and will be trained for it. This will be the first time someone will be scaling the world’s tallest peak to make a Hindi film! PS: Before this film, Shivam Nair will finish another film featuring Tapsee Pannu being produced by Neeraj Pandey’s production house. Kabir And Victor In Sultan A li Abbas Zafar has been an assistant to Vijay Krishna Acharya (Victor) in Tashan and Kabir Khan in New York. Zafar, who made his debut as a director with Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, is currently shooting with Salman Khan and Anushka Sharma for Sultan. So when Zafar asked the two directors to make a special appearance in his film, they happily agreed. Yes, a source close to the film reveals, “Ali was in a dilemma as to whom to cast for a particular scene and that’s when his mentors’ names popped into his head. And when he asked Kabir and Victor to do a cameo in Sultan, they happily agreed. In the last schedule, both the directors will shoot for the film at Film City.” Maybe this is gurudakshina Ali Abbas Zafar-style! Yes, the director, who loves to travel to the interiors of India to shoot ad films, has finally locked his next script. Sarkar’s last film Mardaani was with Rani Mukerji. A source close to him adds, “Pradeep doesn’t just decide to direct a film. He does so only after he is totally confident of the story. Now he has developed a woman-oriented script, which will start rolling in July-August. The casting will be complete by next month.” Since it’s a woman-centric film, we wonder if it will be Mardaani 2 or something else. Watch this space! Prosenjit To Turn Director P rosenjit has ruled the Bangla film industry for the last three decades and has worked in it for more than four, since his debut as a child artist. The veteran successfully turned producer in 2008 with Janmadata and now he is ready to take the next step. He’s all set to turn director. Speaking exclusively to Box Office India, the actor reveals, “After working for so many years as an actor and producing a few films, I believe it’s time to take the next step as a director. I have been working on a few ideas for a very long time, which are under process, and have zeroed in on one script. Soon will be sharing details about my directorial plan. Although I believe we should make films for the Indian audience rather than state-based ones, I have planned the story in Bangla but also plan to make it bilingual. It’s too early to reveal any more.” Remo’s Next With T-Series R emo D’Souza is shooting the last schedule of A Flying Jatt with Tiger Shroff and Jacqueline Fernandez. The film releases on August 25 but the director will wrap the schedule by April end and plans to lock the post-production by June. After that, he will start his next film, which will be produced by T-Series. D’Souza is known to make his films on a very tight schedule and he will be finishing A Flying Jatt too well within the deadline. A source close to the director reveals, “While he was finishing A Flying Jatt, he was also gearing up for his next film, whose script just got locked. They will start casting soon. Meanwhile, Tushar Hiranandani (writer) has already started working on the third instalment of ABCD, which will start rolling early next year.” RK Is A Busy Boy R anbir Kapoor is shooting for Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, after which he will return to Jagga Jasoos. The film, according to unit member, will hopefully wrap by the end of May. But the actor will not be taking a break because he starts with Ayan Mukerji’s film, which also features Alia Bhatt in the lead. In between, the actor will also shoot a small, first schedule of Rajkumar Hirani’s next film, a biopic on Sanjay Dutt. Kapoor will be attending a reading session with the director for 10 days before the small schedule is shot. Then the actor will shoot friend Mukerji’s film at a stretch before he wraps Hirani’s next. Guess Who? I t is a dream to make your debut as a director if your film has a few big names, and this director was very lucky to get that. But luck is not enough; you also need to be talented. So it wasn’t a surprise when the film bombed and this director had to twiddle his thumbs for ages. Although not talented but lucky, this director managed to woo a big filmmaker of today’s times and he got a relatively good set of actors for his film. Since the filmmaker was very happy with the idea, he thought the director had to be talented. So he got busy with his other movies and left the film to the director. The movie is complete and this filmmaker is in shock, having watched the final footage. The film is far from what he imagined it to be. Now this filmmaker has decided to use his own team to do the post-production work, in an attempt to salvage the project. However, sources close to this filmmaker believe it’s too late. Sad, but true! 9 April 2016 Box Office India 09 STRAIGHT NEWS Tussauds To Re-Model SRK F or the first time ever, Madame Tussauds of London will remodel its Shah Rukh Khan figure as Gaurav, his character in the upcoming Yash Raj film, Fan. NY VFXWAALA Wins At AFA, China T PKP At Dream Fest C horeographer-turned-director Seemaa Desai’s upcoming children’s film Pappu Ki Pugdandi, produced by the Children’s Film Society of India (CFSI), has been selected for Dream Fest International held in Bucharest, Romania. The film is being showcased in the Children & Teenagers category. With this latest recognition, the film has officially entered 17 film festivals in India and overseas. The film stars Hardik Khanna, Atul Parchure, Anupam Bhattacharya, Jaswinder Gardner and Prince Shah. he 10 th edition of the Asian Film Awards (AFA) was held at Venetian Theatre in Macau, China. Team NY VFXWAALA, a division of Ajay Devgn Films, did its magic at the Asian Film Awards 2016 for the visually startling film Bajirao Mastani as it won the Best Visual Effects award competing against films like Attack On Titan, The Great Tiger, Bahubali: The Beginning and Monster Hunt. Delivering over 1800 VFX shots in a span of six months for Bajirao Mastani, VFX head, Prasad Sutar supervised the entire visual effects production along with the Creative Head of VFX, Naveen Paul. While The Assassin and its director, HOU Hsiao-Hsein bagged awards for Best Film and the Best Director respectively, Prasad Sutar was the only Indian to win at the AFA this year despite having eight other nominees from India. According to Prasad Sutar, almost all the scenes of Bajirao Mastani had a VFX component and each sequence demanded an essence of history, romance and culture. So, right from designing the sequences, creating the backgrounds, extending the sets, executing the battle sequences, multiplication of the crowd and setting the climax to take the story to its conclusion, the team went on to create the visuals to suit the era of history and traditional relevance of the culture showcased. Apart from Bollywood films, NY VFXWAALA has also worked extensively on regional feature films. It is not surprising that the talent at NY VFXWAALA has also got the attention from Hollywood and is currently in the process of addressing enquiries. 10 2 April, 2016 Vol. 7 Issue 30 `200 India’s Premier Film Trade Magazine www.boxofficeindia.co.in BOI + BOXOFFICE! Log on to www.boxofficeindia.co.in Box Office India 9 April 2016 @BOI Hoping for.. a lot of appreciation, a lot of feedback, love, accolades and a lot of numbers He had a dream and he fulfilled it. The director of FAN, Maneesh Sharma, in conversation with Team Box Office India Box Office India (BOI): Congratulations on winning the National Award for your first film as a producer. Now, as a director, you will have FAN, the biggest film of your career so far, releasing next week. It’s been a great year... Maneesh Sharma (MS): (Cuts in) Yes, I mean, a good year so far. The director part is yet to be taken care of. But it has been an interesting year in the sense that, of course, Dum Laga Ke Haisha is getting the same kind of response it had received last year. But it is a good qualifier in that a lot of team members are making a clean sweep at award functions, like Bhumi (Pednekar), Varun (Grover), Papon and Monali Thakur. It has been greatly appreciated musicwise and in the debutant category, and obviously the biggest one, the National Award… It is a good feeling that you are racing to complete your next film while receiving accolades for your last one. It is a good cycle and I hope in terms of the biggest film you are referring to, it really becomes that… big and bigger and hopefully something really special. 12 BOI: You came all the way from New Delhi to Mumbai to direct Shah Rukh Khan. MS: Yes, I mean Delhi to Bombay in the sense that… Shah Rukh Khan and I attended the same college. I had wanted to direct films since that time. I went about it in a structured way because I didn’t know any other way. I am not from a film family, I am not from this city, so I chose to educate myself first. So I went to a film school in California, and by the time I was graduating, I was pretty clear that I wanted to direct Hindi films. Of course, there is a struggle but what happens is… back then, when you are graduating, you have that one extra year on OPT (Optional Practical Training) and most students from India or outside America choose to spend that one year working in the US. This is obviously well paying and looks good on your CV. But I graduated in May and was back in Delhi in June. While I was there, I was trying to figure out a way to meet this great actor called Shah Rukh Khan. It was obviously my next step as I always wanted to make a film with him. I finally got the phone number of his spot boy, Subhash dada. One day, I called Subhash dada and introduced myself. I said I was calling from LA, that I was studying here and was trying to figure out a way to get in touch with Shah Rukh. I said I had this concept I wanted to bounce off him and didn’t know how to go about it. I asked him if it would be possible to speak with him. He said, ‘Saab abhi shot mein hai, aap 10 minute baad phone karna.’ I called dada back 15 minutes later and asked, ‘Sahab free hai kya?’ He said, ‘Nahi, aap... abhi bhi chal raha hai thoda shot.. achcha hold kariye aap.’ And this voice comes on the line… it was Shah Rukh’s. He said, ‘Hello,’ and I just stood there, stunned, thinking was this really Shah Rukh Khan on the line? I still don’t know why he came on the line. So that kickstarted my larger plan. Box Office India 9 April 2016 BOI: What did you speak to him about? MS: I told him my name, that I was from Delhi and was about to graduate. I said that after I graduated, I planned to bounce off a script to him. I asked him to suggest a good window. And he was very very nice to me. He said, ‘See, I am going to be preparing for this show, Temptations, so there is no way I can be out of town then. I will be in Mumbai for two weeks, just rehearsing and planning.’ Basically, he was giving me a window to meet him in Mumbai. He said, ‘Whenever you are here in Mumbai, give me a buzz and we will figure out a slot.’ I was flabbergasted and said, ‘Great.’ I put down the phone and was, like, let’s just go… ab toh ban rahi hai picture. Now Shah Rukh is waiting for me! BOI: Did you really have a story in mind or was that just a cold call? MS: I had, yaar. I was not stupid. I don’t want to go into the details because I don’t want to go off-track from this interview. I came to Mumbai for six days in July 2004, after that phone call, and during those six days, I met four A-listers besides Shah Rukh. Shah Rukh had given me his manager’s phone number and email address when I had spoken to him over the phone. When I didn’t get any response from his manager, I even called Subhash dada. I had some acquaintances in Mumbai and crashed here and there while trying to figure out these meetings. I called and messaged Shah Rukh but received no reply. Back then, the new thing was Voice Mail but I didn’t leave a message. I thought, ‘Ye nahi karunga main.’ Two to three days of those six days went by. One day, I finally sent him a very long message saying that I had made all these plans and that I had come all the way here only to narrate a story to him and that he should at least let me know one way or another. Three hours later, I got a reply. He said, ‘Is 6.30 okay to meet up? I am busy in a shoot. I should be back by then. Here’s my address, Mannat, Bandstand.’ I messaged back, saying ‘Sure, I will be there.’ I thought, chalo aaj toh yaar meeting ho jayegi. I arrived at Mannat, and that’s when I saw his fans waiting outside and posing in front of the gate which said ‘Mannat’. You could see they were happy to wait. That’s something I have not experienced in Delhi. I had heard of Mr Bachchan’s fan following, how he comes out on Sunday and waves to his fans. But I had never witnessed any of this in real life. I think it started something there. When it was 6.30 pm, I approached 9 April 2016 Box Office India the guard and said, ‘I am Maneesh, here to meet Shah Rukh sir.’ And he was, like, ‘Saab ghar pe nahi hai.’ I said, ‘Aap unse poochhiye toh sahi.’ I asked him to ask inside as he must have left a message with someone. He did check and Shah Rukh was not there. I left and I messaged him, saying, ‘I was here and apparently you’re not home.’ 10 minutes later, he messaged me, saying, ‘They are right, I am running late and am on my way. The moment I get in, I will message you, then you come in.’ I waited again, and that’s when I saw what people were waiting for. The moment his car rushed in, the gate opened, the car went in, then the gate closed. They were just happy to see him inside the car. I went to the guards and said, ‘Mera naam Maneesh hai,’ and he said, ‘Please aayiye.’ That was a very big moment – the Mannat gate opens and I am walking inside Mannat! In my head, I am walking in 48 fps (frames per second), I am going to meet Shah Rukh Khan, and thinking, yeh ho kya raha hai. Finally, I went in and met Subhash dada, whom I had been talking to over the phone. He was very polite and asked me if I needed chai-coffee. He said, ‘Saab 10 minute mein aa rahe hai.’ It’s the longest wait I had ever experienced. I was sitting in a room, alone in Mannat, the room had a great sea view, there was a Pepsi machine in the room, back then there was VHS, there was jukebox. I was wondering what is going to happen and how I would react when he walked in. I was thinking these thoughts and from the corner of my left eye, I spotted him walking in. It was like those film shots where you see him walking and the stairs draw closer. I rose from my seat and he was very professional. And I felt very respected. Usually, someone will think koi student aaya hai, haan suna, excitement mein ho jaata hai kabhi-kabhi. Let me hear him out. Phone kar raha hai kayi din se, kya pata scene kya hai. Instead, he spoke to me very professionally and asked me about myself. During the course of our conversation, we discovered a Delhi connection and a college connection. I had also attended the same theatre group, so Barry (John) was a common point in our conversation. We ended up chatting a lot eventually. It was not even a fan-star moment, where I was, like, ‘Sir aisa hai, I really like you, aap ki woh film.’ There was no room to have that conversation, and strangely you don’t want to have that conversation. You want to say things like, ‘I plan to come and make films and frankly with you. So what can we do?’ We talked about an idea, whatever the idea was about. Then I saw little Aryan coming into the room and he divided his attention between Aryan and me. He was not being rude, all he was doing was giving his son attention just as any father does after he comes back from work. I found him very cool. So it was a good, pleasant conversation. Then I left. Everyone asks me where I got the FAN idea. I think that was the moment… when I saw everything and everyone around him. The idea germinated on that day. There is a sense of distance when you meet a star, it could be a film star, a cricketer, anyone. Once that distance is bridged, it has a certain kind of turnaround. I am not saying it’s negative but there is a journey there. Back then, I was obviously thinking about people waiting outside while he had gone inside, but there was hope that he would come out. That emotion excited me and I wanted to talk about it. That’s how and where FAN took shape. BOI: Please continue. MS: This was the first act of the journey. Actually, post this script which 13 @BOI I talked about, I thought I needed to work in this industry. I needed to assist and in some capacity, understand how things worked. I needed to figure out the technicalities of making a film here. Once I decided to assist, I thought it should be with Yash Raj Films because Mr Yash Chopra is a director whose cinema has influenced me a lot. Yashji, Hrishikesh Mukherjee… their films have left a great impact on me. My journey with YRF started with Fanaa as an assistant. As Fanaa was nearing completion, in 2006, I showed Adi (Aditya Chopra) all my short films. You know, when you come out of a film school and you are excited to show your work to someone like Aditya Chopra. He gave me very positive feedback. So as Fanaa was getting complete, I asked him if he could give me some time to bounce off an idea. That’s when I mentioned the story idea that is now called FAN. He said it was a brilliant idea and was genuinely excited about it. He told me two things – first, to work on it as it was definitely going to be a tough film; and, second, that I shouldn’t imagine it would be my very first film because it was a very ambitious film and it would require a star. I was, like, ‘Nahi…nahi…nahi… nahi… banegi toh yeh Shah Rukh Khan ke saath banegi warna yeh nahi banni chahiye.’ He was, like, ‘Achcha tumhe Shah Rukh Khan ke saath banana hai film? ’ I said ‘Yes, yeh sirf Shah Rukh Khan ke saath hi banegi.’ So he was like ‘Likho toh sahi, banao Shah Rukh ke saath but yeh pehli film nahi hogi. Then Fanaa released, I was working on the subject, it was an exploratory stage. In a couple of months, I got a call from Adi, asking ‘Where are you? Are you in Delhi or Mumbai? What are you doing?’ I said I was in Mumbai, working on the script. He said, ‘Wahi wali? Good, come meet me tomorrow.’ He said, ‘I am planning a film, I suggest do it if you like it. It’s a Madhuri Dixit comeback film and directed by Anil Mehta.’ I was, like, Madhuri Dixit ki come back film hai, I am doing it, we are not even discussing it.’ I have always liked Anil Mehta’s work as a cinematographer. Obviously I was very excited about it. Then Aaja Nachle released and I went back to writing. Two months later, I got a call from Adi, asking ‘Kaha par ho? Delhi mein ho ya Mumbai mein ho? Kal aa jao office.’ I went there and he asked, ‘Kya chal raha hai?’ I said, ‘Story likh raha hoon.’ He was, like, ‘Oh tumhara magnum opus? Achcha script hai bahut achcha script hai.’ Then he said he was making a film 14 hona chahiye. So Band Baaja Baaraat happened. Then things fell in place. Coming to your question about meeting when the pre-production of Rab Ne… was happening, you need to meet the actors, there were two looks of Shah Rukh, and one look demanded a moustache, body language, etc so we were meeting very often. I also must say that when I met him back then at Mannat, I had this long hair and a beard. Now I was a clean-shaven, good boy. He had met a guy for 40 minutes, who had a name which was every third name in India. So itna nahi pata chala. Neither did I introduce myself, saying main mila tha aapko. We were interacting in the capacity of first assistant director and lead actor and were obviously very chilled out. I think a week or 10 days into the shoot, we were chilling during a lunch break and the conversation went to something we had discussed at Mannat, something about a play, about writing, and it just came out. I was, like, ‘Actually sir, we had this conversation once main na tab ayaa tha.’ He was, like, ‘You are that Maneesh?’ I said, ‘yes.’ He said, ‘You were studying in LA, right?’ I was, like, ‘Yes.’ And he said, ‘Then who is he, the one who makes art films?’ I said that had to be someone else. And he was, like, ‘Yaar, I say hello to him every time we meet at a party.’ He repeated, ‘Woh tu hai? ’ And then the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. featuring Shah Rukh Khan and we need to look for a new girl. ‘I want you to work on it, look for a new girl.’ Shah Rukh Khan and Aditya Chopra wah yaar! So I worked on Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. After that, Adi and I were having a conversation and he said, ‘Ýou will be making a film but FAN will not be your first film. So let’s talk about other stories we can indulge in as producer-director.’ I was, like, ‘Shucks yaar, mujhe toh laga Rab Ne... banne ke baad meri film ho hi gayi thi. But woh hua nahi…’ BOI: While Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was being made, you never spoke to Shah Rukh Khan about your past meeting? MS: I did, and that’s a very funny story. I will come to that. So when Rab Ne… was complete, this whole rejection of FAN gave birth to Band Baaja Baaraat. I had to come up with a fresh story and I didn’t know there was a Band Baaja Baaraat line in my system somewhere. I thought achcha hai yaar thoda personal, intimate sa BOI: Your first three movies were with debutants or relative newcomers. Was it different while making FAN, working with one of the biggest superstars of Indian cinema, for the first time? MS: No, I still don’t know what the difference is between a newcomer and Shah Rukh. I have worked with Ranveer (Singh) and Anushka (Sharma) in her initial career, in some capacity or other, whether Rab Ne… or Band Baaja Baaraat; Parineeti (Chopra); and Shushant (Singh Rajput), all in the initial stages of their careers. You are kind of taking steps together and there is this energy and camaraderie. Shah Rukh is just like that even after so much experience and that’s why, at least with Shah Rukh, working with him is no different. He is the best team player you could have; he is the most experienced yet childlike person on the sets. Like newcomers, he is always asking about the shot (Yaar kya yeh thik tha?). So the energy of discussing whether something was going right or not (Yaar yeh sahi jaa raha hai, nahi jaa raha hai), is a shared energy. Despite the fact that he is such a huge star, none of that matters when it comes to the process of making a film. Box Office India 9 April 2016 BOI: Tell us about your second meeting with Shah Rukh at Mannat, when you narrated FAN to him. MS: Since Rab Ne… had happened, our equation was now very different. My very first award, the Screen Award for Best Debut Director, was given to me by Shah Rukh. That was a very pleasant coincidence. There were moments like those as well. He had really enjoyed the film (Band Baaja Baaraat) and post- and pre-, we would talk a lot. I would always say that I want to make a film with you and he would be, like, ‘Yes.’ He knew that something like FAN was brewing between Adi and me and was going to come his way. I think by the time it happened, we had shared a whole film in some capacity – Rab Ne…, then I had a good run at awards with Band Baaja… Shah Rukh was there every time and we would meet each other. During that year, I think he was getting the Best Actor award everywhere and I was getting the Best Debutante Director Award for Band Baaja... After that, Adi was planning Jab Tak Hai Jaan. He and Shah Rukh met and he was, like, okay we are doing dad’s film and this is the plan… and he also told him the story idea of FAN, that I was interested in making it and was he interested? Shah Rukh was, like, which one is to be done first because I have to do both. So we knew he was interested. So when I actually met him for FAN, the process was very organic. He read it and we discussed it. He was, like, let’s meet and compare notes, let’s meet at so-and-so time, etc. We talked about the script and thankfully he was cool about everything. It was very brave of him. I thought he might have some reservations about the film but he was actually adding to it. That was very reassuring. In fact, while discussing both the characters, he asked for a pen and a notepad and started taking notes. BOI: We have a real-life superstar playing an on-screen superstar. Were 9 April 2016 Box Office India you tempted to actually have real references or at least a context to put into the script? MS: In the first few teasers, I think people can see that I have used some real-life footage but I am not making a film about Shah Rukh Khan and Gaurav, I am making a film about a superstar and a fan. Yes, Aryan Khanna’s journey is modelled on Shah Rukh Khan’s journey, meaning a regular middle-class Delhi boy who has made it very big. It is also Aryan Khanna’s arc. But if anyone were to ask me whether he is actually Shah Rukh Khan, I would say yes, he is. He is a superstar, so why can’t I model it on him? But, at the end of the day, it is a fictional piece of work and the experiment of having Shah Rukh at two opposite ends in the film is there. I guess, once you watch the film, it will be very clear that it is not Shah Rukh Khan. BOI: What kind of research did you do for the character of Gaurav, which you say is dark? MS: A lot of research went into it and there are many case studies not only in India but also abroad. You may be surprises to learn that in the ‘40s and ‘50s, there were way more extreme cases. So we did that kind of research. The idea between me and Habib Faisal (the film’s writer) was that the perspective was entirely ours and we should be completely honest. Trust me, there will be a takeaway from this film but I can’t talk about it. So we had this thing about being a fan to fanatic, that is Gaurav’s arc. BOI: In the promos, you have not revealed very much about the film. All we see is Aryan and Gaurav. MS: On the contrary, people are saying that I have revealed the entire story in the trailer and I am, like, no, there is a lot more in the film. The first teaser had a different aesthetic. The second teaser was more about revealing Gaurav, rather Shah Rukh as Gaurav, so those two teasers were more about just when you are setting things up but two things are very clear from the trailer, that it is a wholesome film in terms of its genre. I am not sure what vibe you get about the film after watching only the first two teasers. For us, it was more about setting up the world of Gaurav, the warmth of Gaurav. The film is wholesome that’s what we were trying to say. The other thing you will see in the film is what happens when your greatest fan becomes your greatest enemy. BOI: Do you have a number in mind? MS: Sab bolte hai tu producer ban gaya but still I don’t know or understand this numbers game. My first film, Band Baaja Baaraat, had the lowest number for a Friday, for a Yash Raj film. But I know it’s a very loved film, I know it’s a very memorable film. I guess `85 lakh ka Friday tha Band Baaja Baaraat ka. Now if I think do I take the Friday `85 lakh or eventually how the film did? . The first film I produced kind of had the same arc, so of course the numbers are good, numbers are something everyone looks for. And this is not a Band Baaja Baaraat or Dum Laga Ke Haisha ke level ka film, you know the numbers will be there. I think if it’s a good film, the numbers will follow. It also has star power attached to it. I can’t attach myself to that nor can I ignore it because producer ke paise toh ban jaane chahiye na. So I don’t have a number in mind. There is the fact that it is releasing on a non-holiday Friday, so obviously numbers are certain matlab kuch alag type ke honge. But jo hoga achcha hoga. BOI: What are your hopes for next Friday? MS: A lot of appreciation, a lot of feedback, love, accolades and a lot of numbers. That’s what I am hoping for. 15 RIGHT NEWS RIGHT NOW Airlift Neerja Kapoor & Sons Sanam Good, Better, Best With the first quarter of 2016 coming to a close recently, the film industry takes stock of the box-office performance this year compared to 2015 Q ROHINI NAG, SOUMITA SENGUPTA W ith the month of April starting on a promising note with Ki & Ka, we entered the second quarter of 2016 on a positive note. The year kick-started with January releases like Wazir, Chalk N Duster, Airlift, Kyaa Kool Hain Hum 3, Saala Khadoos and Mastizaade, with only Akshay Kumar’s Airlift charming the audience and boxoffice counters alike. The next stop was February, which had Ghayal Once Again, Sanam Teri Kasam, Fitoor, Sanam Re (plus film), Loveshhuda, Neerja, Aligarh and Tere Bin Laden Dead Or Alive, to name a few, and it was Neerja that not only impressed the trade but also the critics. March saw Zubaan, Jai GangaaJal, Teraa Surroor (plus film due to its cost), Kapoor & Sons and Rocky Handsome. Kapoor & Sons won many hearts along with box-office accolades. With a mixed bag of Hollywood and Hindi releases in the first quarter of 2016, this year emerged better, compared to the first quarter of last year. The second quarter of the year began with a bang, with Ki & Ka performing well at the ticket window. This week, we ask industry experts if we can expect a better performance from 2016, compared to last year’s boxoffice reports. After the release of Love Games this Friday, April will further see Shah Rukh Khan’s much-awaited Fan, followed by Nil Battey Sannata, Laal Rang and Baaghi, among others. The month of May rides on an interesting mix of films, including Cabaret, 1920 London and two biopics, Azhar and Sarbjit up for release. The second quarter will wrap in June with Jagga Jasoos, Housefull3, Raaz Reboot, Udta Punjab and Junooniyat. The third quarter will start with much- 16 anticipated films like Salman Khan’s Sultan and Shah Rukh Khan’s Raees having an Eid outing in July. Happy Bhaag Jayegi and Dishoom will follow suit in July as well. August has Hrithik Roshan’s Mohenjo Daro (Roshan had no releases last year), and Akshay Kumar’s Rustom, Banjo and A Flying Jatt. September will start with an interesting mix of releases, namely MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Baar Baar Dekho, Pink and Rangoon. The fourth and most important quarter of the year is a time when producers bring out the big hitters while aiming for the box-office jackpot as the deal is sweetened due to the festive season, when cine-goers, especially families, spend generously on movie outings. The main attractions are therefore reserved for Diwali and Christmas. Accordingly, we will see films like Mirzya, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil and Shivaay in October. November is clearly a month of sequels, with films like Rock On 2, Tum Bin 2 and Force 2 up for release. December will wrap the year with Wajah Tum Ho, Befikre and Dangal (Aamir Khan too did not have a release last year). The year 2016 is partially a year of content-driven biopics and it boasts a promising slate of releases to expect a prosperous time for the industry. Read on to learn what tradewallahs have to say on the first quarter of 2016 being better than the first quarter of 2015. And, can we expect the next nine months of 2016 to be better than 2015? Here’s what the film industry had to say: SUBHASH GHAI FILMMAKER This year has been very good so far and, in fact, every film has earned more than `50 crore. It’s a very positive time for the industry; we are no longer focusing on the ‘`100-crore’ bracket. The audience is demanding good content, which has been understood by directors and producers, and that’s why the industry is now focusing more on writing. Neerja, Kapoor & Sons and Airlift all had popular stars but it was the stories that attracted the audience. Every successive quarter is making more money, and, hopefully, the rest of the year will be successful at the box office. BHUSHAN KUMAR CHAIRMAN & MANAGING DIRECTOR, T-SERIES The first quarter of 2016 was not only better than that of 2015, box-office wise, it was also a good time for different kinds of films. The first quarter of last year was a success for us due to Baby and Roy but in 2016, Airlift was bigger and better at the box office. Sanam Re also did well for us at the box office. This year, on the whole, will welcome films with good content which will not only be loved by the audience but also deliver hits at the box office. Today, the audience is definitely looking for content-driven films. VIJAY SINGH CEO, FOX STAR STUDIOS Fox Star Studios has had a great first quarter in 2016 – we are the No.1 Studio in Hollywood and Bollywood, with two of the top three films in Bollywood and Hollywood giving us a combined Box Office India 9 April 2016 Sanam Re Ki & Ka market share of around 30 per cent. In keeping with our objective to be a creative studio, we supported diverse content with Neerja and Kapoor & Sons. The Indian audience is changing rapidly and seeking different content, which not only entertains but also provides something new and identifiable. We are proud that our films have done so incredibly well, not only in India but internationally too. We have had five back-to-back hits, with Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, Deadpool, Neerja, The Revenant and Kapoor & Sons, and we are committed to build on this momentum. We are a young studio and the last few years have been a huge learning for us. We have a clearer vision of where we want to go from here, with a focus on strong scripts, home productions and building relationships with the best. We have our tentpole projects like MS Dhoni: The Untold Story, Karan Johar’s Diwali blockbuster, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Akira directed by AR Murgadoss in the coming months from our Bollywood slate. From our Hollywood slate, we have big-ticket movies like X-Men: Apocalypse, Independence Day: Resurgence and Assassin’s Creed. AMRITA PANDEY VICE-PRESIDENT – STUDIOS, DISNEY INDIA The first quarter of 2016 has been great, with content-driven Hindi movies doing well. We are now looking forward to this quarter as we have a super exciting line-up of local and Hollywood productions. Our The Jungle Book, which released yesterday, has been an exciting and landmark campaign for us. The film is special to us for umpteen reasons. As you have seen, we pulled off many coups for the Hindi version of the all-new epic adventure – roped in A-list Hindi film talent to dub for all our iconic characters; got Gulzarji and Vishalji to reprise their ‘90s childhood anthem – Jungle jungle baat chali; and 9 April 2016 Box Office India Teraa Surroor had Neel Sethi visit India to meet The Jungle Book fans, to make the adventure tale really unique for the local audience. Soon after that, we will release the action-packed Baaghi, whose trailer has already created a stir in the industry. We are then set to release our next Marvel tentpole Captain America Civil War. Post that, our diverse slate of releases continues with Alice Through The Looking Glass, Finding Dory, Dr. Strange, Jagga Jasoos, Mohenjo Daro, Star Wars: Rogue One, Dangal and more. There’s something for fans of all kinds of films. With such a unique mix of genres, we think the next few months for the Studio and movie-watching audience is going to be really exciting and entertaining! NANDU AHUJA SENIOR VICE-PRESIDENT (INDIA THEATRICAL), EROS INTERNATIONAL The year 2016 has had a great start, with films like Airlift, Neerja, Kapoor & Sons and Ki & Ka doing very well at the box office. The first quarter also saw some good contentdriven movies that have been appreciated by the audience, like Aligarh. The year has some big releases coming up, like Fan, Sultan, Housefull 3, Shivaay, Dishoom and many more, which boast of star power backed by good content that promise to rake in good numbers at the box office. We are expecting this year to be bigger and better than 2015, considering the good line-up, big budget films and contentdriven films. GAURAV VERMA CHIEF REVENUE OFFICER, RED CHILLIES ENTERTAINMENT What a great start to the calendar year! The first quarter was up little more than 30 per cent over last year, but the second quarter box office vs last year will be tested, although April’s revenues will go up thanks to Shah Rukh Khan’s Fan. However, business was good in May last year, and it might be lower this year. But, in June, revenue should make up for any deficit in May. Overall, there is a fair chance of beating 2015; it all depends on the second half of the year, which will decide how much growth we will see. The second half looks promising, thanks to the good flow of films. Also, most of the big titles are scheduled for the last six months of 2016. SHOOJIT SIRCAR DIRECTOR Compared to last year, business definitely increased during the first quarter this year. This shows that with every passing year, we are constantly focusing on the quality of our content. Last year, too, we had good films like NH10, Dum Laga Ke Haisha and Baby, and this year we had films like Airlift, Neerja and Kapoor & Sons, and all three films did good business at the box office. We now hope the next few months too turn out to be impressive. The more we earn at the box office, the more we will be able to churn out good content. REMO D’SOUZA DIRECTOR 2016 started on a very good note, with films like Airlift, Neerja, Kapoor & Sons and now Ki & Ka doing so well. The number of quality films increases every year. One thing’s for sure, if you make a good film, nothing can stop it from running at cinemas, not even exams or cricket matches. All these films have done great business and in the coming months too, we have a great line-up of all kinds of films from, commercial, masala films to content-driven films. RAJ NIDIMORU DIRECTOR I believe that the business of film industry has been on the upswing since 2012. There have always been phases when nothing works and that’s a reality 17 RIGHT NEWS RIGHT NOW check for filmmakers. The audience only accepts good films, whether they feature stars or not; it’s the script makes the actors in the film stars. And, today, cinema is not about only two leading jodis; it’s about characters. Look at Kapoor & Sons… every character is a star in the film. So 2016 started on a very good note and we have a great line-up for the next few months including films like Fan, Jagga Jasoos and the Dhoni biopic, to name a few. AMIT SHARMA MANAGING DIRECTOR, MIRAJ ENTERTAINMENT Purely from a Bollywood perspective, the next nine months certainly look better than last year. We have two superstars, Aamir Khan and Hrithik Roshan, releasing their movies this year, which was not the case last year. However, the difference was in the English content as well as due to Bahubali, so we just need to wait and watch to see who fills this gap. THOMAS D’SOUZA PROGRAMMING HEAD, PVR CINEMAS Last year, the last two weeks of March slowed the performance of the quarter. This year, Hollywood joined the party with Deadpool and The Revenant in February, followed by two sleeper hits, Neerja and Kapoor & Sons, and the highly anticipated Batman V Superman in March. Audiences are patronising contentdriven films and the big summer blockbusters and star-driven vehicles have their own fan following. With the success of the Hindi versions of Deadpool and Kung Fu Panda 3, we expect a boost in the BO contribution from The Jungle Book’s Hindi version as well. It looks to be a good year, and with one Khan sitting at every quarter, we can safely hope to better our 2015 performance. GIRISH JOHAR HEAD – GLOBAL REVENUE, ESSEL VISION Yes, this was indeed a pleasant surprise. After back-to-back stagnant years, the start of this year was quite impressive. We have clocked more than `575 crore during the first quarter vis a vis `365 crore during the same period last year. This is a very exciting jump of 37 to 40 per cent. The main drivers of this are Airlift, Neerja and Kapoor & Sons. Yes, I fully foresee a fantastic year ahead of us as well. In fact, the second quarter has started on a brilliant note, with Ki & Ka. With biggies like Fan, Baaghi, Azhar, Housefull 3, Udta Punjab, Sultan, Raees, Great Grand Masti, Dishoom, Rustom, Mohenjo Daro, Dhoni, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, Shivaay, Befikre, Dangal and many more lined up, this year is looking splendid. Road, Fort, Mumbai 400 001 18 Box Office India 9 April 2016 Amrita Pandey, Vice-President, Studios, Disney India, on the recently released film, The Jungle Book, not being just for kids, getting popular Indian stars to dub the Hindi version and the idea behind reintroducing the 23-year-old song Jungle jungle baat chali hai… Q SOUMITA SENGUPTA What was the response like from the Indian audience when the first teaser was unveiled in December last year? The first teaser had Scarlett Johansson’s voiceover and we were bombarded with responses. The first teaser set up a few things very well, one being that this film is not meant exclusively for kids. Also, even if some people were not aware of the film’s director Jon Favreau, the fact that he had directed Iron Man was enough as he has made it into such a cool franchise. The teaser also introduced the intrigue factor about the characters in the film and obviously about Mowgli, the central character. Some people did say that it was a little dark but the strategy was to send out the message that this film was not only for kids. Amazingly, on our social media handles, everyone immediately started talking about the song Jungle jungle baat chali hai. We all have experienced The Jungle Book in one form or another, through films or the TV show or even the book. We therefore wanted to make the film more relevant to India, that too in the Hindi language, as the story emanates from this part of the world and we all know the author so well, we know the characters so well. So we thought of casting talented actors in these characters and write in a way where we actually translate the English dialogue into Hindi. We got Mayur Puri on board and the response has been fantastic. Even when we put out the song, which is a 23-yearold track, it received 2 million views, that too a song without a star. It is such an iconic song that you can’t mess with it. It was important to get it right. Everyone is very nostalgic about it. in Hindi. The names came to us after we watched the film, to have Priyanka Chopra as Kaa, Irrfan as Baloo, Nana Patekar as Shere Khan, Om Puri as Bagheera and Shefali Shah as Raksha. Jon Favreau has done such an amazing job with the film and we wondered who would play the various parts, for instance, Ben Kingsley plays the part of Bagheera in the English version and there was no one to match up to him. Once we familiarised ourselves with the content of the film, we were able to imagine what we could do with it. The marketing push of the Hindi version is huge. Actually, it is not, not in terms of costs but it is in terms of the fire spreading through the audience. There is little else we have to do other than put things out. I have to share the credit with everyone. Can you share any ideas you had for marketing this film and how different is it to market a live action film vis-a-vis an animated one? We had not done an animation film before, so it was a first for us but the challenges it posed were very exciting. The first challenge was to convince people that this was not really a children’s, ‘animation’ film and that it was a film that everyone should watch. While doing that, it was important to get a lot of content out there including the names of the Hindi actors because when you cast actors like these, there is obviously a message that there are adults in the film. Usually, in an animation film, you only get kids to dub. Then we released the song. When we approached Vishalji (Bhardwaj) and Gulzar saab, the idea was to appeal to people older than 20 because they grew up in the ‘90s, and also 30-year-olds as they grew up during that period. We were working on nostalgia here. I have a niece who is eight years old and she doesn’t know the song. But it is not meant for her; it is meant for me or you because, at the end of the day, we grew up listening to that song. So we had to work on the older audience as well as the younger audience. A lot of creatives have the animals upfront as kids love animals and we are also advertising on kids’ channels, which is a given but our creatives are also very uniquely positioned. Usually, when you do a Hindi dub for an English film, you advertise in the Hindi newspapers but here we have done such an amazing job with these huge Hindi actors dubbing that the (Hindi version) ads are also being carried by the English newspapers. So, someone reading an English newspaper may want to watch the Hindi version because these are actors they are used to watching on screen. It is not only about age groups, it is about positioning both the Hindi and the English versions. I think the film should be watched in both languages. Did you decide to make the movie in Hindi after the trailer launch in English or was the idea conceived in the beginning? The idea was always there. After we watched the film in-house, we felt it was important for India to experience the film 9 April 2016 Box Office India 19 IN NEWS Jungle Look @BOI Blood Ties Team Laal Rang – actors Randeep Hooda, Meenakshi Dixit, Rajniesh Duggall, Pia Bajpai, Akshay Oberoi, and director Syed Ahmad Afzal – relive the choicest moments from the shoot in Karnal, Haryana – with Team Box Office India Randeep Hooda (RD): Who is going to start with some humour? Maine suna, Afzal, (Syed Ahmad Afzal) aap interview kar rahe ho humara. Syed Ahmad Afzal (SAA): Ji haan. I would like to start with the drunken scene from our film, which has a story behind it. I request Randeep bhai and Akshay (Oberoi) to tell us what preparations went into doing that scene. RH: I told Akshay, ‘Dekh bhai, aisa hai ki main daaru waale scene daaru pee ke karta hoon. If you want to do the same, let me know.’ He agreed. And when you watch the film, you will realise how naturally it came to. Aisa bhi nahin lag raha hai ki daaru peene ki acting kar rahein hain aur aisa bhi nahin lag raha hai ki itni pee hui hai. SAA: I totally agree with Randeep bhai. The bond between him and Akshay showed. Before the scene, I was worried about whether they would forget their lines. The scene lasts around six minutes. RH: (Cuts in) We shot for nine minutes and three minutes were edited out. 20 SAA: (Laughs) Yes, it was to be a nineminute scene and we shot the entire scene in a single take. Retakes only happened due to technical changes. Towards the end, Randeep bhai asked me, ‘Tu maze le raha hai kya?’ RH: Of course! He was very happy every time we shot. But there were many other interesting things that happened while shooting, one of them is a scene we can’t talk about. SAA: Akshay and Pia (Bajpai) also had a similar scene in the film, and by ‘similar’, I mean a scene where they get drunk. So Akshay and Pia share your memories… RH: Oh, that scene! That must have happened with so many of us, in small towns, big cities, in America, everywhere around the world, where people make a girl drink and take her home. (Laughs) Akshay Oberoi (AO): I took some advice from Randeep sir and then delivered the scene. (Laughs) RH: Akshaye ne pee thi, isne (Pia Bajpai) sunghi thi. (Laughs) Pia Bajpai (PB): No, let me tell you something. Akshay’s boy had made that drink and it was very strong. While we were rehearsing the scenes, the alcohol hadn’t taken effect. But when we arrived on the sets, we were both drunk and our director thought we might not be able to deliver the scene. Set pe tabaahi mach gayi thi, and they all were saying 'control, control!’ I was totally out of control and not in my senses at all! RH: It is not advisable, not everyone should do it, only those who can handle it. But director partial hai….humare romantic scene hangover mein, tumhare romantic scenes full power mein! (Laughs) PB: In fact, the next morning, I had to ask everyone whether I had behaved appropriately after I got drunk. SAA: Yes, she was so scared the next morning! RH: It’s a very nice scene. I quite enjoyed it. PB: We also enjoyed performing it. Box Office India 9 April 2016 Meenakshi Dixit (MD): Also, talk about the shout… SAA: Mummy! (Shouts) PB: Yes, I shout ‘Mummy!’ I knew I had done something wrong, so I was crying. So once I say, ‘Mummy’ and even after the shot, I kept weeping, which our director has retained in the scene. RH: It’s called ‘drinking too much and busting cherries’. Something like that… samajhne wale samajh gaye, jo naa samjhe woh anaari hain (Sings). SAA: Another interesting incident, which took place during one of our action sequences, was the one where Rajniesh Duggall was following someone. There were two characters – one was Dracula and the other was Atul, who is supposed to be from the police Crime Branch. The first shot was with Dracula who is very thin, aisa lagta hai ki chaabi bhara hai aur woh chal rahein hain. RH: (Cuts in) Raam bharose chal rahein hain woh! SAA: Haan, bilkul. So, he started running during the chase sequence… the camera was rolling and he was running, and suddenly Dracula was out of the frame. Then, suddenly, we all heard a loud noise and realised he had fallen down and he fractured his nose and knee. But Dracula bole ki main bhaagunga, still, he wanted to finish the scene but we sent him to a hospital instead. Rajniesh too was supposed to shoot the same sequence and it was his first day as the SP saab, but before him Atul, who plays the guy from the Crime Branch, did the chase sequence and he too fell down! Everyone on the sets went quite mad. Some of them were laughing and some didn’t know how to react because both of them had been running and fell on the same track. RH: Hamari film mein dhap se bahut log gire hain! Because our film is about a blood racket, which I believe is the worst type of crime in the world and is very prevalent in our social system. In India, people are reluctant to donate blood. Unko lagta hai ki kamjori aa jaegi. According to the law, you cannot buy blood, you have to replace the blood you take. But people are more than happy to pay for it and the people involved in this racket sell a single unit of blood for `5,000. All they need to do is catch hold of a rickshawallah or thelawallah, take his blood, give him `500 and a packet of biscuits and that’s it! The margin on a single unit of blood is therefore `4,500. We are talking about the year 2002, and in case dengue ho jaye, toh chaandi hai. The people involved in this racket treat blood as if they are selling onions and potatoes in the market. This film is based on them. Usually, when you want to send out 9 April 2016 Box Office India a social message, the film tends to look like a documentary. But Afzal has treated the story in a very different way, where he has used the racket as the backdrop and made the main story revolve around friendship, love, emotions and relationships. It also says that one can earn money by getting educated and doing the right thing, quite unlike what my character does in the film. So Afzal has stitched the story together very beautifully. A French composer has composed the background music of the film. Imagine someone from France composing Haryanvi reggae! Another very important part of the film is Vipin Patwa, who hails from Uttar Pradesh and whose forte is UP classical music. Unhone Haryanvi raageeneon ko le ke techno music bana diya. The film doesn’t look like it’s based in Karnal, Haryana, but in Spain. We have talked a lot about the film, let’s get back to what happened while shooting the film. We are here to promote and sell the film, not tell stories! When they came to me for the first time, to brief me about the look of my character, Shankar along with the costume designer, they had the same old Khap kind of clothes, feete waale kurte and all that jazz. I was stunned and felt it discredited Haryanvi society, like the way Haryana was depicted in a few films made in the recent past, films which were hits. But that’s not Haryana! I felt that we had to change that perception, so we flipped my character around in two days. I think that added the required zing to the part only because we wanted to run away from clichés like wife beating, infanticide, Khap panchayants and all that. I think the most endearing character in the recent past was that of Datto from Tanu Weds Manu Returns. Now Aamir Khan is doing Dangal, which is based in Haryana; Salman Khan is doing Sultan and the song Ho gayi chull is Haryanvibased. There are a lot of positive aspects about Haryana but there have been a lot of films which have presented Haryana in the wrong light. I think this movie is releasing at the right time, when there is so much intercaste conflict and the state is hugely underestimated. I think people in the state will be able to identify with the music and interestingly we have an allNorth Indian cast. It is therefore an apt time for this film to release as it speaks volumes for a culture identified by khaps and honour killings. The people there are very rangeen. Besides, we are dealing with a heinous crime in the movie, racketeering in blood, but he (Syed Ahmad Afzal) has wrapped it in so much Haryanvi humour. A lot of people in this industry misunderstand my humour and think it is offensive. But, in all honestly, humara humour hi aisa hai. SAA: (Cuts in) Black humour. RH: So if we see a checked shirt, we say, ‘Badi chitkabri si shirt pehen ke aaya hai’ or ‘Lungi ke kapde se banayi thi kya shirt.’ You know, we are simply engaging them with humour but people here are so sensitive that they would say, ‘Hayee kya bol raha hai yaar ye.’ That is another aspect of this film which is very interesting and then we have also got these two beautiful ladies, yeh (Meenakshi Dixit) bade baap ki ladki hai ye (Pia) chhote ghar ka ladki hai toh ye sab bhi chal raha hai, Pia innocent hai aur Akshay badmaash sa hai. You just heard how he got her drunk… SAA: (Cuts In) ‘Mummy’ bulvayaa. RH: Haan, he taught her about the birds and the bees. I also think the music is a winner and I hope it gets enough air time. Many films that are hyped are not all that great and there are many films that are great but not hyped. It is difficult to find the right balance because we didn’t have a release date in mind. Also, there were problems with the title, you know, Yeh laal rang is a song and that title belongs to someone else. So we went back and forth while deciding what to call it and finally we decided on just Laal Rang. This is a very small-budget film, I mean one-tenth the costume budget of FAN. So, from a business point of view, let us not compare ourselves with bigger films. But I think we will be a winner with word-of-mouth publicity, provided our distribution muscle is enough to hold our own with FAN and Baaghi releasing next week. People are equating our film with Dum Laga Ke Haisha but that film was distributed by Yash Raj. They have got muscle power to hold a film in cinemas for 25 years! I don’t know how many people actually turned up to watch Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge again and again. So we are talking about that kind of distribution muscle versus ours. I hope our distributors are strong enough but that’s besides the point. The point is that all these things are not in the control of the artistes or our director. But we are trying to do our best. RH: Then we have the music @BOI Bawli booch and Bhang ragad ke, which have typical regional flavours but with an international sound, the French guys have done the music in Paris. SAA: The most important aspect regarding the packaging of a film is its music – the background score and its tracks, basically, the OST. I was chatting with this guy, Mathias Duplessy, who did Peepli [Live] and he is doing Dangal’s background score and… RH: (Cuts In) Finding Fanny, they are still finding Fanny! SAA: So I spoke to him and told him the premise of the story, and he said he would love to work on this subject. The amazing part is that we sent the 90 per cent of the film without any brief as he told me he didn’t need one. He composed the background score by simply gauging the energy of all the actors in the frames; there is not a single bit that doesn’t match the situation. It was almost as if I was writing the script and he was simultaneously composing the background score! RH: It proves that feelings don’t have a language. SAA: Music has no barriers, in the sense he was just watching it and playing his guitar. He is a world music guy and has acoustics and everything. It has live sounds, not a single digital sound. Whereas it took Pankaj Matta and me 20 days to work on the script, it took six months for the music, to come up with these tracks, and then I also suggested one ragini which Vipin Patwa… RH: Tu raja ki rajdulari, mein sirf langote aala su, bhang ragad ke piya karu main, kundi sote aala su… SAA: I was, like, this has to be there, we need this. RH: This actually goes very aptly with my character. SAA: Absolutely! RH: Hindustani stories with directors like Afzal are very attractive, at least to me, and they are based in something.. The winner here is that it is not a Haryanvi film but it has all kinds of dialects within the film. All of us speak different dialects, and that rootedness and the music that comes into play, and the language… I think it is a very authentically made film, which could compete even on the world stage as it deals with a very important 22 topic because no matter where you are, blood runs in your veins. The film is also based on true incidents – yes, Karnal mein they aise pisaach jo ki raat ko nikal te they khoon choosne. SAA: We have taken a few events and woven them into a fictitious tale with fictitious characters. We have changed their names. So the story is inspired by real life, to some extent, and we have retained some events just as they had taken place. Obviously, we had to change some things but the speciality of Karnal is that it has become a melting pot in the North. It is neither complete Haryana… RH: (Cuts In) Nor it is Punjab. SAA: The ratio is 60:40 and there is Punjabiyat, Multani because, after 1947, there were refugees from Multan. There is an entire Multani colony inside a fort. Earlier, there were camps and later they built homes. The government told them to build their homes right where they had their camps, which is Taraori, which is the address to Shankar (Hooda’s character) also. So he lives in a fort. He has a fort to himself! RH: Well a matchbox-like corner of a fort, but he did get the most scenic part because a film was being shot (Laughs). SAA: Now let me tell you something about Meenakshi that happened before the shoot. On the day our first workshop was to take place, she must have been in a meeting or something. So she had to prepare and come for the workshop. MD: (Cuts In) I didn’t receive the script. SAA: You had the script! RH: Everyone says the same thing. (Laughs) SAA: So, she was a little unprepared and everyone had to read their part, and she was like… MD: (Cuts In) I was very nervous. SAA: Maine bas inko ek baar dekha. MD: (Cuts In) My pages were lost, I wasn’t able to read all that Hindi. SAA: Yes, after that, I called her. MD: (To Afzal) Apne bahot jhaada mujhe! SAA: I yelled at her and she was like, ‘I can’t talk right now, I will talk to you later.’ And she hung up. After that, she decided that she should memorise the entire script. She called all her friends and memorised the entire script with everyone’s lines! AO: (Cuts In) What are you saying? Really? RH: Even I know everyone’s lines in the film, regardless of whether I am in the scene or not. MD: That’s exactly what happened. SAA: Yeah, she was reading everyone’s lines. When I asked her alag se about what happened, she was like, ‘I have a team and I prepared with them.’ That was very nice and it showed in her performance too. I also remember her crying and later she said, ‘Oh, tumne mujhe yeh bola tha, yeh lo, yeh lo, yeh lo!’ RH: (Cuts In) Yeh lo! (Laughs) MD: Afzal was very appreciative of my shots and I would be, like, that’s because of the scolding I got. SAA: The second interesting thing that happened during the shoot was, there was a highly emotional scene and she was very excited about doing it and the temperature was around 50 degrees Celsius. RH: Arrey don’t ask, it was too hot! SAA: And in her excitement, she kicked a bottle of beer, just like one does with a football! And what do you think happened? RH: Oh, yes, she did that! SAA: The bottle broke and a piece of glass pierced Randeep bhai’s leg and we have videos of it. MD: Oh God, it was during the first day of the shoot. RH: Oh yes, I have even given my blood for this film, I absolutely forgot. MD: I thought I was shooting for the first day, aur pehle din hi pair mein kaanch ghusa diya upar se line nahi bol paa rahi hai. I was, like, ‘Very bad impression made, Meenakshi.’ SAA: She is playing a doctor in the film, Dettol vagarah bhi lagaya. RH: Kaafi malam patti ki. AO: Din raat! RH: Din raat seva karne ke baad agle din mein uthke tayaar ho gaya, shooting karne ke liye. But I think the funniest character in the film is Pia’s. The Rapidex English she learnt… there is a scene in which he (Oberoi) asks Pia, ‘What do you like about me?’ Akshay, Pia, please say those lines. AO: Accha mere bare mein kya acha lagta hai, tumhe? Box Office India 9 April 2016 PB: Your hairs, your smiles and your eye. RH: Matlab jahan pe ‘s’ lagaana hai wahan pe nahin lagaati hai, aur baaki sab… It makes for a hilarious effect in the film. AO: Nice comedy. RH: It is very funny and the way this small-town, uncorrupted girl has been shown is hilarious. SAA: It also has that card thing, which was so popular in the ‘90s, when cards, especially Archies cards, were exchanged a whole lot. That trend then slowly reached B centers as well. So there is this scene where Akshay writes ‘I Love You’ in blood. It is in the trailer too and she asks Akshay, ‘Kahaan kaata khudko?’ RH: She didn’t know ki khoon ki nadiyaan beh rahi hai (Laughs). And I think Rajniesh (Duggall) has done something completely different. Initially, I was, like, ‘Yaar, why have you cast Rajniesh in the cop’s role?’ But when I saw him in the uniform with his mustache and tough attitude, I think it turned out really well. Rajniesh Duggall (RD): When I met Afzal, even I was slightly taken aback and asked him if he was sure he wanted me to play this role. But after I saw his vision, I understood what was happening in the film. I wanted to be part of this story even though it was not a full-fledged role. It is a relatively small but strong role. RH: Like Shankar, his character too is from Rohtak but they have chosen different paths, so it has that counterpoint. Aur iske paas Maa hai. (Laughs) AO: Bank balance nahin hai (Laughs) BOI: More importantly, the dialect… was it easier for you, Randeep, since you are from Haryana? RH: Nahin yaar, now I have done French, Marathi, Punjabi, English… I live in Mumbai and have studied in Australia. I have done two-three different accents in films. When I said my lines in Haryanvi for the first time, actually Jaatu, not Haryanvi, I was very self-conscious and had no idea whether I had said them correctly. Usually, you practice a language and then deliver your lines but I had to go back to my childhood and remember how people use to talk. It wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be and also to find the right balance between people understanding it and not understanding it. It was extremely tough. In Highway, I spoke Gurjari but look at the difference… If you have to say ‘Where are you going?’ in Haryanvi in Jaatu, you would say, ‘Rey kith jaa hai?’ and in Gurjari, ‘Arey kahaan ko jaa raho hai,’ The musicality of the language, the intonations, the stress points are all very different. 9 April 2016 Box Office India BOI: How did you get it right? RH: Well, by memory and calling up my chacha, spending time with Paleram, who would speak to me only in Haryanvi and it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be, ki arrey main toh Jaat hi hoon toh ho jaaega. I have been living in Mumbai for 15 years and I had no opportunity to speak in Haryanvi. But slowly and steadily, it all came back to me. BOI: What about the other dialects in the film? RD: Yes, I speak in proper Rohtaki Haryanvi. RH: But more educated. SAA: With more finesse. RH: And he (Akshay Oberoi) speaks in a dialect that is more of a PunjabiHaryanvi mix. Pia speaks in a different dialect too. SAA: Saharanpur. RH: She speaks in a UP accent. Pia, I read that you are talking in a Haryanvi accent in the film, toh kaunsi film ki baat kar rahi hai tu? (Laughs) PB: No, I am Poonam Sharma from Saharanpur. SAA: Saharanpur, Western UP. RH: Aur iska (Pia) ka bahut acha lisp bhi hai. PB: Yes, I didn’t have to do much because I am already from UP. I just went back a few years. humour, so it is quite similar. I don’t think that the audience will have any difficulty understanding the dialogue. RH: Kudos to that sound guy, what is the name? SAA: Shahab (Alam). RH: Superb sound! SAA: It’s a 65 to 70 per cent outdoor film, live locations and how he has recorded… It sounds very nice and along with him, Kunal (Gupta, First AD), who was there on the sets – sabko chup kara ke rakha hua tha. A shoot would only begin … RH: (Cuts In) Haan, of course, ‘Oye chup ho jao yaar, chup kyun nahin hote!’ (Laughs) SAA: And he would always carry a small book with the script in his hand and all thanks to my actors, I didn’t have to get stressed. PB: Thank you, sir! AO: Thanks you! PB: Oh, yes, thanks you, sir! (Laughs) BOI: Given all these dialects… Multani, Jaatu, Rohtaki… will it be difficult for the audience to understand what is being said? SAA: I don’t think so because it is natural to adapt to a new dialect. So when you watch a film and come across a new dialect, you adapt within 10 minutes. Moreover, the dialects and accents are not very difficult to understand. There is also body language to help. Paan Singh Tomar was 10 times more difficult than what we are doing because that was mooda- moodi. AO: (Cuts In) Even Gangs Of Wasseypur. SAA: Wasseypur yes, but Paan Singh Tomar was very difficult because moodamoodi, Bundelkhandi. They went into a very difficult zone but, in India, the fact is ki har dus kos the language changes. The anticipation for the film’s music was also quite high, since both actors Shroff (Heropanti) and Kapoor (Aashiqui 2 and Ek Villain) have previously been part of musically hit projects. The soundtrack opens with the romantic track Sab tera composed by Mallik, who has at least one track in most of the hit albums in the industry today. Mallik has retained the basic Bollywood flavour and the song has a pleasant melody. The song also has Shraddha Kapoor coming on board as the playback singer. The husky vocals of the actress-singer complement the tone of the track, with Armaan Malik’s voice taking it several notches higher. Let’s talk about love is laced with ‘60s charm and it brings back memories of RD Burman-composed tracks. Manj Musik has composed this track keeping in mind the classic, flashy disco traits that were once styled around Shammi Kapoor. Taking into account Shroff’s impeccable dance moves, this song will make for a good music video. The energy of the track brought across by the singing of Raftaar and Neha Kakkar rubs off on listeners, making it a good foottapping track. Director Sabbir Khan has written the lyrics of this quirky track. Straying from the typical Baby doll flavour, Meet Bros has brought a pop flavour to Cham cham, mirroring the popular song Pari hoon main. The composers have kept the Kerala-inspired sounds as the base of their musical arrangements with dandiya-styled orchestration built on it. The song has a throw-in of easily forgettable English verses but Monali Thakur has reflected the energy of the song quite ably and has done complete justice to the track. Ankit Tiwari has brought his signature compositional style in play for Agar tu hota but unlike other sad songs, this one is upbeat and has a heavy dose of intensity thanks to Tiwari’s vocals. The track rides on the gritty strums of the electric guitar further meddling with Western instruments like the piano and drums. Arijit Singh’s Girl I need you is yet another offering from Meet Bros. The orchestration for this romantic track has a good mix of Indian and Western instruments like the flute, piano, guitar and drums, to name a few. With this track, the composer duo proves they can create songs of different genres which are a far cry from their signature club-dance numbers. Singh, as always, is at his best and effortlessly brings out the dreamy feel to this track but the English verse of Girl I need you disrupts the melodious trance despite being well executed by Roach Killa. Verdict: A typical Bollywood album with thankfully no reference to parties or alcohol! – Swagata Panjari Music On Her Mind Singer Tulsi Kumar has her hands full with her recently released single, a tribute to her late father, and several upcoming big-banner films Q SWAGATA PANJARI S inger Tulsi Kumar has been receiving several accolades including a GiMA for her hit track Soch na sake from Airlift. Recently, she also released the track Mera papa, which she first performed last year at the event Suron Ke Rang, where the entertainment industry came together to pay tribute to her father, late Gulshan Kumar of T-Series. Composed by Jeet Ganguli and penned by Manoj Muntashir, the track is an emotional journey for the singer. “We composed the track in two hours and I sat with Jeetji and Manojji and spoke about the feelings and relationship I shared with my dad. Also, we wanted every child to relate to the song. This song is very special as it was my dad who got me to sing, so it makes me very emotional. After I performed at the show, everybody 26 wanted to hear this song again. That’s what prompted us to make a video along with my sister Khushali,” says Kumar. With several chartbusters such as Mera mann (Nautanki Saala) Tu hai ki nahi (Unplugged - Roy), the Sanam Re title song, and Hum mar jayenge (Aashiqui 2) to her name, the singer is loaded with offers. Most recently, she sang a track for Omung Kumar’s upcoming biopic Sarbjit, featuring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Randeep Hooda. She says, “It is a romantic number. It is my first song for a biopic. I love biopics as one can relate to these films far better since you know the incident actually happened.” Tulsi Kumar will also be part of Anubhav Sinha’s Tum Bin 2, sequel to the 2001 musical film Tum Bin. Since the first instalment offered some great music, what are her expectations from the sequel and the challenges she faces? “The project is in its rough stages, so I can’t say much now. As the film and title suggest, the movie will have several romantic songs. I don’t view it as a challenge as I was a part of Aashiqui 2 and Aashiqui had set a benchmark. So I never think about that. We all work towards creating good things and when you work under pressure, things only get worse. And I believe in doing my best.” Apart for Sarbjit and Tum Bin 2, Kumar has a few other upcoming projects, one of them being Vivek Agnihotri’s Junooniyat featuring Pulkit Samrat, Yami Gautam and Gulshan Devaiah. The story is said to be an intense love journey and the music has been composed by Ankit Tiwari, Jeet Ganguli and Meet Bros. Also, Kumar will be singing an upbeat dance number in Ram Gopal Varma’s Secret.
