Letter from the Executive Director
Now well into the school year, voices of children continue to fill the Hult Center. Our team of health educators has been
busy with school busses still rolling in as well as taking Hult’s signature youth health education programs on the road to
area schools. Our cancer programs staff has been hard at work helping to improve the quality of life for cancer patients
and their families from communities in central Illinois. The Hult Center’s Encore program has more than doubled the
number of seniors being served within the community. Efforts to reduce the stigma associated with mental health
continue as the Hult Center looks to expand mental health program offerings and increase community awareness of
mental health.
The Hult Center’s fundraising staff has also been very hard at work the past few months. After an extremely successful
Whitney’s Walk in the end of July, Lobster Roast of Matt George in September and Uncorked in October, the staff and
board of the Hult Center would like to say thank you to all event sponsors and attendees. We would not be able to
continue working toward the mission of “empowering people to live healthier lives” if it weren’t for our grantors, sponsors,
donors and supporters.
As the season changes from fall to winter, so do things at the Hult Center. Our Executive Director, Matt George, took a
position as President and CEO of Children’s Home. In his years of service to the Hult Center, Matt made a tremendous
impact upon the organization, programs and staff. The Hult Center team is particularly grateful to have had the
opportunity to work with and learn from Matt over the past few years. We wish him well in his new role at Children’s
Home and will sincerely miss him. During this time of transition, the Hult Center team has pulled together and utilized
our strengths to seamlessly continue the momentum of fulfilling the Hult Center’s mission.
Again, thank you for your support and helping the Hult Center to empower people in central Illinois to live healthier lives.
Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday season.

HILARIOUS! Lobster Roast Success
A special thank you to all who attended a no-holds-barred Roast
of Matt George at Weaver Angus Farm on September 13th.
Roasters Chuck Weaver, Sheriff Mike McCoy, Todd Baker,
Patti Bash, Bill Kwon, Jeff & Andy George had the audience in
tears as we celebrated and said farewell to Matt.
We are so grateful to Chuck and Laurie Weaver for opening
their home to us and to Dixon Fisheries and Barrack’s Cater
Inn for ensuring our guests had a wonderful dining experience.
Rising country artist Drew Baldridge had the dance floor rockin’
as guests enjoyed kicking up their heels.
As always, a special thank you to our Lobster Roast committee
and to the dozens of volunteers for helping us put on a seamless
event. And to our sponsors who continue to support the Hult
Center and its mission. We thank you!

Whitney’s Walk Raises $138,000
“I liked this whole program. It really touched my heart when we
talked about suicide because I have tried to commit suicide
before because I felt alone, depressed and like I didn’t want
to live. That was 1 year ago. I am OK now. Don’t change
anything.” – High School Student’s Survey after Hult
Center’s SOS (Signs of Suicide) Program
This is just one example of the powerful feedback the Hult
Center is receiving after completing the SOS program at local
schools. It is evident that the funds from Whitney’s Walk for
our suicide prevention and education programs are needed
now more than ever.
Your support of this year’s Whitney’s Walk for Life allowed
us to surpass our initial goal of raising $125,000 in 2014, and
has allowed the Hult Center to reach more kids in school than
ever before with these life-saving programs and materials! I
look forward to next year and continuing to grow Whitney’s
Walk in order to reach a record-number of lives through our
SOS (Signs of Suicide) and QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer)
programs. Thank you for your unwavering support!

News & Kudos
Thanks Senior Program Volunteers
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC), suicide is the second leading cause of death in Americans
between the ages of 10-24 and the third leading cause of death
for adolescents and youth between the ages of 12-18. In the last
several years, the “silent epidemic” of youth suicide has been
increasing, currently claiming the lives of approximately 100+
young individuals each week.
On September 19th, Encore volunteers were invited to an
appreciation lunch at the Hult Center for Healthy Living;
10 volunteers were able to attend and each received a lunch
from Avanti’s, a thank you gift and a thank you document
attached.
SOS Prevention & Hope Project Expands
In an effort to address this issue, the Hult Center is providing a
2-day intervention for students in Central Illinois high schools. The
intervention consists of two programs designed to complement
and enhance each other: the “Signs of Suicide Prevention
Program” and an exciting program called “The Hope Project.”
The goals of the program are to decrease suicide, suicide
attempts, and self-injury by teaching students how to identify the
symptoms of depression and suicidality in themselves or their
friends, and to respond effectively by seeking help from a trusted
adult.
With funding and support received from the Community
Foundation of Central Illinois, the Hult Center will be able
to expand this program to reach even more students during
the 2014-2015 school year. The Hult Center believes that
these programs will provide students with the knowledge and
understanding of depression and suicide needed in order to start
addressing this issue and making a difference in the community.
Encore Volunteer Appreciation Lunch
The volunteers had the following comments to say:
“We started attending Encore events and really enjoyed
them so we decided that if we were going to get involved that
would be where to start.”
– Mary Lou Howard & Chuck Howard
“I have been with Encore from the start and love the
programs. I am very happy to see the way it has grown and
enjoy working at the events.” – Jan Wherley
“I was a nurse with Methodist for many years and got
involved with Encore four years ago when it began, Bob (her
husband) and I really enjoy Tim Kirk’s presentations on elder
law, and many other of the great programs.
– Vicki & Bob Johnson
This program has been made possible by a grant from the
Whitney Grotts Endowment Fund, Mental Health Remembrance
Leadership Fund, and Caterpillar Community Leadership Fund of
the Community Foundation of Central Illinois.

Educators Suzy Herrington and Holly Bill attended the American
School Health Association 2014 Annual Conference in Portland,
Oregon October 9-11th. Suzy and Holly had the opportunity to
attend over 55 sessions that covered a variety of school healthrelated content. Those sessions enabled our educators to
bring new ideas back to the Hult Center and make the most of
the resources that we have. It also strengthened relationships
between the Hult Center and the nation’s leading health
organizations.
