This is my last newsletter as editor. When I first took over as editor, I decided I wanted to
make it a newsletter for professionals because I was working among professionals. That
meant doing research and writing articles that would interest people who work in an oil
and gas industry. I hope that I accomplished this.
Of course, not all of us are so focused on models and interpretations, and where to drill, so
I also wanted to make it appeal to those of us who had other interests. As it turned out, all
of us in the club have other interests and that is why we joined the club; to carry out our
interests.
Before I review a few of the articles I’ve researched, let it be known that I’m very much
interested in history and biographies. That’s why you’ll notice that a good portion of my
articles are historical. I love watching the History channel. One weekend I saw a
documentary on Krakatoa. I started wondering how many of you knew that over 36,000
people died from that volcano, either directly or from the tsunamis that came afterwards.
On Monday I realized I had found my next letter from the editor.
Another weekend I saw a documentary on the first emperor of China, Qin who wanted to
unify and subjugate all the states like Han, Zhao, Wei, Chu, Yan and Qi by the powerful
political, economic and military strength of the Qin State. I learned from that documentary
that he ordered that 8,000 soldiers be sculpted life size and buried with him and whose
purpose was to protect the emperor in his afterlife. There was the opportunity to inform
others and it was timely as a replica of the terracotta warriors had just gone on exhibit at
the Natural Museum of Science in Sugarland.
Realizing that a good percentage of ExxonMobil employees come from other countries, I
focused on other cultures as well. I did research on India, Korea, Russia, and Germany.
But I didn’t leave out the United States. Thanksgiving comes to mind. I know that Canada
has its own Thanksgiving but their celebration is not the same as the one celebrated in
America. I also did a story on the Star Spangled Banner and how and why it came to be
written, the Bill of Rights and how they came to be written, and the Electoral College.
There was also an informative letter for those who’ve never lived on the coast – one about
hurricane preparedness.
For those who have children, I wrote a letter about school safety and Halloween safety.
Computer addiction and childhood obesity were aimed at this group, also. Although the
article about Easter eggs was originally intended for this purpose, it became an article that
adults could learn from, also. For instance, I didn’t know about the Ukrainian pysanka
until I researched this article. Fortunately for me, a couple of years later I got to see a
dozen of them in person by a friend who paints them.
Because I wanted to appeal to several sects, I wrote articles on Chanukah, Alzheimer’s
Disease, autism, black history, and Martin Luther King, Jr., and an article about the
American Indian’s ghost dance. I also wanted to champion other events such as women’s
heart attacks, how exercise has a lot to do with one’s health whether or not one is slim, the
United Way, and nutrition.
Since we live in Texas, I thought it good to know a little Texas History; hence the articles
on Juan Seguin, the Alamo, and the Gonzales cannon. I didn’t leave out sports, either.
There were articles on basketball, golf, and the Olympics; if I were to continue I’m sure I
would have gotten around to soccer and football.
There are other topics that I wrote about but they are too numerous to name here. I have
enjoyed being the newsletter editor for the Houston ExxonMobil Employees Club and that
is one thing that I will miss terribly. If you are interested in continuing the newsletter,
don’t hesitate to contact Scott Ethington or Jesse Seals. You can make this newsletter your
own; there are no set rules for you to follow and if you prefer a more ethereal type of news
then you’re free to do that.

your own. EMcarpoolClub is an employee volunteer organization and aims
to facilitate carpooling dedicated exclusively to ExxonMobil employees &
contractors. Membership does not require you to carpool to work every day;
it only indicates that you are considering carpooling once or more times a
week or even just once in a while.

HEMC Triathlon Team
Tejas Triathlon
On Sunday, June 1, the HEMC triathlon team competed in the 14th annual OutLoud
Productions’ Tejas Triathlon in Pecan Park of Sugarland. This was the team’s
second competition with 6 team members participating. Our triathletes started at
7:00 a.m. with a 600 yard lake swim, followed by a twelve mile bike ride and three
mile run. All of our racers had great times, including one person who completed his
first triathlon – way to go Matt Anderson!

Event Description: Join the club in celebrating five years of diving. Mammoth Lake
offers diving, swimming, kayaking, and paddle boarding so divers and non-divers of all
ages are welcome. Games and challenges will be set up both underwater and on the
surface. Participation will enter you into a raffle so come hang out with fellow divers, meet
new divers, or make a new dive buddy and maybe win a prize!

available for club members to use at any time for

stocked dive shop on location that you are able to rent from (recommended to call ahead).
