THE ALL-NEW 2012 STUMPJUMPER FSR THINK AGAIN During the past 30 years, if we’ve learned one thing, it’s this: 30 years doesn’t mean squat. Your trails have changed, your style has changed, and your skills have grown. The sport has changed, because riders have changed. When we go ride, we feel the same way; a 30-year old rigid steel bike is cool to look at, but none of us here would ride one. Let’s face it: we live in a different world now. We’ve seen a lot of innovation that has brought us to the bikes we ride today: front suspension, then full suspension, disc brakes, 15 speeds, to 18, to 21, to 24, to 27, and now back down to 20. We’ve gone from steel, to aluminum, to carbon fiber, and we’ve watched 29ers grow into something that’s bigger than just big wheels. After all that, it’s pretty easy to see why we wouldn’t ride an old bike. But we’re sure glad we made them, way back then. If you think you know what the Stumpjumper is all about, it’s time to think again, because we’ve been busting our humps developing the all-new 2012 Stumpjumper. Take a good look, we’re pretty stoked with it. Ride one, and you’ll feel why. Then check out the details: Autosag guarantees perfect shock setup at the push of a button. The Command Post is something you’ll never give up once you ride with one. The geo’s are dialed so the bike rides perfect, no matter what size you ride, or what wheel size you prefer. It’s the best trail bike we’ve ever made. When we made the first Stumpjumper over 30 years ago, the team who designed it was only a few people. Now, we’re a huge team. And each of us is focused on one thing: understanding what riders need, so we can make the Stumpjumper the best trail bike in the world. At a time when you might have thought mountain biking couldn’t get any better, we’re bringing you a pretty sweet reason to think again. See you out there, Brandon Sloan Joe Buckley Eric Schuda David Allen Robb Jankura Jason Chamberlain Mike McAndrews Sam Benedict Alain Lanusse THE ALL-NEW 2012 STUMPJUMPER FSR XC TRAIL GEOMETRY FOX SUSPENSION WITH SPECIALIZED AUTOSAG FACT 11m FRAME TIMELINE Kept secret by the Munitions Control Act during the Cold War, the use of a metal matrix composite had never been seen or heard of by the consumer world. 10% stronger and 20% lighter, the Stumpjumper M2 changed the game. Constructed with Japanese-made Tange Prestige tubing, this was the lightest frame Specialized had made to date. With a lighter unicrown fork and the new Tricross tire, this was the fastest mountain rig in the world. And, it was pink. 1981 The first Stumpjumper was a TIG-welded blue beauty. The first production mountain bike started a new sport with its café-racer style brakes, golf club stem and Specialized Stumpjumper tires. 1984 1990 Ned “The Captain” Overend brings home the bacon, becoming the first mountain bike World Champion aboard his prototype Epic Ultimate and sets the stage for the future Stumpy HT. 1991 S-Works FSR – Prestige chromoly front triangle with a rear end co-developed with Horst Leitner, the legendary FSR suspension system was born, along with a new wave of mountain biking on the horizon. 1992 S-Works Epic Ultimate – the first product to bear the “S-Works” badge was a sub-three pound titanium and carbon frame. The name S-Works has continued to mean the highest in performance, costs be damned. 1993 2002 Stumpjumper FSR XC Pro – an M4 frame with the ability to run rim or disc brakes and adjust the travel between 75 and 90mm made this one versatile trail beast. TIMELINE S-Works FSR Carbon – with a Y570 carbon fiber frame and Brain shock, this Stumpy was ultimate blend of strength and efficiency, a new era in XC Trail riding. 2004 Stumpjumper FSR Disc Anniversary – The M4 chassis jumped to a whopping 100mm travel on the company’s 30th anniversary. With a new “multidimensional” forging, the bike featured the first split seat tube, allowing the shock to pass through the frame. 2006 All new Stumpjumper FSR platform is the most evolved and advanced version to date. With all-new, and lighter, carbon and aluminum frames, plus self-adjusting AUTOSAG suspension. The all-new Stumpy also marks the coming of age for the 29er, with the first S-Works Stumpy FSR 29. Specialized builds their first Stumpy 29er. With 105mm of travel and XC Trail geometry, it was one of the longest travel 29ers at the time. Complete with custom geometry for the big wheels and rad Commando style paint job, this marked the start of something big. 2008 TSI is born with a revolutionary approach of integrating every major part of the bike and frame. The FACT 10m carbon frame was perfectly integrated with Specialized suspension, including a tapered, one-piece carbon steerer/crown, the first of its kind on the S120. 2008 2010 Specialized redefines the XC Trail category with an increase in travel and reduction in weight. With the S-Works Stumpy featuring a longer-legged carbon fork, carbon cranks and Brain shock, this beast could tackle the worthiest of trails. And, weighing in at 23 pounds, it flew up the hills faster than ever. 2012 total suspension integration FSR + Brain We blazed the trail in active, independent suspension, and have been refining it ever since. FSR technology delivers more comfort, control and efficiency than any other suspension design, by effectively isolating chain and brake loads. Through our nearly 20-year progression of FSR we’ve been able to tune the ride to match the experience. The result: The same FSR technology that smooths the trail for Christoph Sauser to sprint up the mountain faster than anyone in the world and is the same technology Sam Hill will call up to compete for another downhill Rainbow Jersey. Control – maximum traction means greater control. The FSR design is independent of chain and brake forces, therefore it’s free to compress and rebound over terrain features whether you’re pedaling or not; allowing the tires to maintain contact with the ground a greater percentage of the time. Comfort – smoothing the terrain to minimize impacts increases an athlete’s endurance by reducing fatigue. Active suspension is free to absorb trail-induced forces so the rider’s body doesn’t have to. Efficiency – maximizing each rotation of the cranks is the key to riding efficiently. The FSR drivetrain is independent of the suspension, so pedal stroke is not affected. Chain torque won’t engage the suspension, so as a rider puts effort into the pedals the bike will propel forward, not up and down. Brain –The externally tunable, trail-sensing rear shock, pioneered by Specialized and manufactured by Fox sets the bar for the pinnacle of suspension performance. With a new XC Trail shock tune, and new easy-to-use Brain Fade dial, the Brain maximizes efficiency and control over smooth and rough terrain. When a rider encounters bump forces, the Brain’s inertia valve disengages, allowing oil to flow and the shock to immediately transition from firm (efficient) to fully active (compliant) suspension settings. The external Brain Fade dial allows riders to fine tune their suspension to their perfect settings. weight Otherwise known as Functional Advanced Composite Technology, FACT represents our holistic approach to working with composites. Like any project at Specialized, FACT bikes and equipment are based on the needs of the rider, then we apply four critical disciplines to achieve the design targets that will best serve those rider needs: Design & Engineering, Material Selection, Fabrication Process, and Testing. What’s the result of the FACT process? Superior carbon bikes and equipment that deliver real-world performance benefits for the target rider. In the case of the new 2012 Stumpjumper FSR, this means that it’s lighter, stronger, and more versatile than ever before. This quick and easier sag adjustment guarantees the perfect setting for optimal suspension performance. 3 When a rider sits in the saddle, the Specialized-designed transfer port in the shock releases air pressure until the set sag point is met; the rider cycles the shock, which equalizes the positive and negative chambers. At the push of a button, the shock is set at the perfect sag point. The best riding position is a result of being comfortable and in control. Every Stumpjumper has a low bottom bracket and short chainstays for maximum maneuverability, combined with a roomy top tube for a balanced, centered position on the bike. The geometries for both our classic 26” and 29er Stumpjumpers are critically unique for both frame and wheel size. Each size is dialed perfectly, so every Stumpy is tuned for the rider (you!), and designed to match the ride and handling characteristics of the two different wheel sizes. MANEUVERABILITY EFFICIENCY Our 26-inch and 29er geometries feature short chainstays, low bottom brackets and tight wheelbases, for nimble handling and aggressive cornering. The Stumpjumper rear triangle is designed to be stiff and responsive. The combination of a roomy top tube, short chainstays and rigid bottom bracket ensures a proper fit, a balanced cockpit, and optimized traction for efficient uphill performance. EVO STYLE-SPECIFIC BIKES BUILT FOR EXPERIENCE-SPECIFIC RIDING Riders often customize bikes to suit to a specific riding style. EVO bikes are modified and tuned to meet those ever-evolving rider needs. Building on the success of the Stumpjumper EVO’s breakout year, Specialized grows the line with more models in 2012. EVO bikes are equipped to meet the demands of more aggressive descending, with meatier tires, slacker geos, wider handlebars and purpose-tuned suspension.
