SUGGESTIONS FOR HIKES Hahntennjoch is a mountain pass route that links the Upper Inn Valley with the Tyrolean Lechtal Valley. Running between Imst and Elmen, the 29 km-long scenic road is particularly popular with motor bikers. The summit of the pass, located at an altitude of 1,894 m, marks the border between the two municipalities of Imst and Pfafflar and, at the same time, between the districts of Imst and Reutte. The narrow, winding road, which includes gradients of up to 18.9%, is closed to caravans and vehicles over 14 tons. The road is closed to all traffic during the winter months (November to April). From the Hahntennjoch pass you can hike over the Steinjöchl col to the Anhalter Hütte mountain hut (2,042 m) in around 1 ½ hours, or over the Scharnitzsattel saddle (2,441 m) to the Muttekopfhütte mountain hut (1,934 m) in around 3 hours. approx. And because it’s important to protect and preserve what you love, the people who live here and spend their holidays here treat the beauties of nature with care and respect. Intact Alpine landscapes and a rich variety of flora and fauna offer the perfect setting in which to unwind, relax and recharge your batteries. When the sun’s shining on your face and your feet are dangling in the cool water of a mountain stream, then you’ll feel it – this is your summer! © West Werbeagentur 50 51 EARTH PYRAMIDS NATURE © Imst Tourismus – Thorsten Wenzler NATURE The earth pyramids or ‘towers’ of sedimentary rock are very rare in Tyrol. In the Waldertal valley between Roppen and Arzl you can marvel at these fascinating ‘wonders of nature’, ideally during a walk round the circular trail (approx. 1 ½ hours). SINNESBRUNN – A NATURAL BEAUTY SPOT This area of natural beauty takes its name from the little pilgrimage chapel and from the healing spring water. Hidden in this hilly, undulating terrain, with a light sprinkling of spruce trees, are countless little moors created during the ice age. Far away from the traffic in the valley or any background noise, this is a place where you can savour nature and serene tranquillity. © Imst Tourismus ROSENGARTENSCHLUCHT GORGE Just a short walk away from the town centre, you’ll find one of Tyrol’s most stunning biotopes – the Rosengartenschlucht gorge. The Schinderbach stream winds its way for 1 ½ km from the ‘blue grotto’ through the bedrock of Imst’s low mountain terraces to St. John’s church (elevation difference 250 m). For geologists the gorge provides an insight into millions of years of the earth’s history, but having said that, you don’t have to be a geological expert to marvel at the beauty of the gorge with its abundance of flora and fascinating stones. MILSER AU The aim of the Milser Au revitalisation project is to preserve the ecosystem of the grey alder alluvial forest on a long-term basis, and to breathe new life into the natural habitat in order to prevent any further ecological deterioration of the gallery forest. The revitalisation project, together with the construction of near-natural river control structures, has resulted in the creation of flood retention spaces and valuable habitats for rare animal and plant species. Guided hikes, courses and talks offer visitors a closer insight into this unique area. For events in the Muttekopfhütte mountain hut see page 72 The Gurgltal valley is not only a delightful place for humans to live, but it’s also home to countless rare species of flora and fauna. In order to provide visitors with an insight into this little known aspect of the valley, a varied programme of guided nature tours is on offer together with experts from a wide range of fields. Located at the entrance to the Gurgltal valley, this is one of the most gorgeous spots in Tyrol, a secluded area of natural beauty, perfect for lingering and relaxing. With the former ‘Sigmundsburg’ hunting lodge protruding out of the water, the lake offers a spectacular photo motif. The romantic ambience is perfect for long walks and hikes. Those who prefer to take it easier can explore the lake on a pedal boat. 54 © LEV Gurgltal, Franz Wierer FERNSTEINSEE LAKE 55 NATURE From an earth-history perspective, the Imst Holiday Region exhibits features from four major geological eras. The many layers of rock and sediment are like an ‘open book’ for geologists, a book that tells the story of the earth’s development. And the best bit about it? Even for the untrained eye, the geology of the area is ‘clearly visible’! All you need to do to make sense of what you see, is to join in one of the highly informative guided geology hikes together with an expert in the field. You should plan in around 1 ½ hours for the museum. Special children’s afternoons, children’s birthdays and night-time guided tours for groups can be arranged on request. EVENTS & CULTURE © Archiv Imst Tourismus Several years ago the 200-year-old brewery was meticulously modernised and the 700-year-old castle was given a new lease of life. In the castle the debris that had amassed over the centuries was eliminated and the old plasterwork was removed to reveal walls that were even older. The rooms were restored to their original functions, along with the countless historical corridors, some of which served as secret passageways! Thus a tour through the castle evolved, that takes visitors from up above the brewery down to the deepest vaults, cellars and passageways. Today the brewery and the castle offer a fascinating experience and a close insight into the world of brewing from its very beginnings to the present day. © Imst Tourismus – Melitta Abber EVENTS & CULTURE STARKENBERGER BEER MYTH OPENING TIMES 1st May – 31st October 2016, Tues – Sun 10.00 am – 5.00 pm ADMISSION PRICES Adults € 7.00 | Children up to 15 years, school pupils, students € 3.00 Family-pass holders with voucher on family pass day 1/2 price Groups of 15 and over – without a guided tour € 5.00 / per adult, with a guided tour € 7.00 / per adult Combined ticket with Starkenberger Beer Myth € 14.00 EVENTS 01.05.2016 22.05.2016 14.08.2016 23–25.09.2016 % Summer season opening Modern-day healers Beer & Spuds Rupert and his handcrafts OPEN-AIR THEATRE ‘LAPISLAZULI’ 16th July | 17th July | 21st July | 22nd July | 28th July | 29th July | 30th July | 4th August | 5th August | 6th August | 12th August | 13th August | 15th August | 17th August MUSEUM: ‘The Healer from Gurgltal’, see page 68 KNAPPENWELT GURGLTAL Tschirgant 1, A-6464 Tarrenz, Tel. +43 5412 63023, office@knappenwelt.at www.knappenwelt.at 67 FASNACHTHAUS CARNIVAL MUSEUM – NASSEREITH © Archiv Fasnachtshaus Nassereith In 2008, human remains of a woman who lived at the time of the Thirty Years’ War (1618 - 1648) were found in the forest of Strad, a hamlet belonging to Tarrenz. The cause of death, as well as the identity of the 30 - 40 year-old woman, still remain a mystery. Due to the numerous artefacts also found, it can be assumed that she was somebody experienced in the art of healing. The newly created museum in the Knappenwelt Gurgltal offers visitors an insight into life in the Gurgltal region in the 17th century and, in particular, into the work of the mysterious healer. www.knappenwelt.at The inhabitants of the village of Nassereith celebrate the ‘Fasnacht’ carnival every three years. At the end of the Fasnacht celebration, after the church bells have summoned to prayer in the evening, the masks disappear for a further three years. If you don’t want to wait that long, then you can see some of them in the ‘Fasnachtshaus’ carnival museum in Nassereith. Here the colourful world of ‘Schellerlaufen’ and co. is on the agenda every Friday. Visitors can marvel at the vibrantly coloured costumes, the elaborate wooden masks created by renowned local artists and the fascinating ancient traditions. Modern film technology brings this rich and lively custom to life, almost giving visitors the feeling of actually being there in the thick of it all. In September 2012 the ‘Nassereither Schellerlaufen’ was added to the UNESCO list of ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’. ‘HAUS DER FASNACHT’ CARNIVAL MUSEUM This museum makes use of state-of-the-art technology to present an authentic, indeed archaic custom in all its richness, a tradition which, in 2012, was added to the UNESCO list of ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’. Autumn in the Imst Holiday Region offers a spectacle for all the senses. Mother Nature paints the landscape with vivid hues. The Indian summer offers skies of deepest blue. And the views of the mountain peaks and pastures are crystal clear. No wonder that this season has always inspired the inhabitants of the Imst Holiday Region to rejoice, to organise festivals and celebrate their customs and traditions. One of the most enjoyable autumn folk festivals is the ‘Schafschied’ in Tarrenz, when the return of the sheep from the Alpine pastures is celebrated in the village. The annual driving down of the sheep from the Hinterberg Alm is a spectacle not to be missed. At the Eagle Festival in Hoch-Imst everything ‘circles’ around the theme of eagles.
