Recognised for competing at the highest level within their sport, these Legends and their families attended a ceremony at Antrim Forum where they unveiled a commemorative panel highlighting their impressive achievements. Garfield Lithco - Bowls Garfield enjoyed many AllIreland successes, including the Irish Triples Crown in 2008. However the highlight of his career came in 2009 when he captained the Ireland Team when they won the British Isles Team Championship. With 27 Senior Irish Caps and over 40 tournament wins, Garfield’s roots still remain with his local club, Muckamore Indoor Bowling Club where he has been a member for the past 14 years. Pat McKeown - GAA (Deceased) With a successful career in both Hurling and Gaelic Football, Pat was a valued member of Kickhams Creggan GAC. Winning the Antrim Junior Football Championship in 1942 and the Antrim Senior Football Championship in 1943, he was later selected to play for Antrim in the All Ireland Hurling final. Named player of the year numerous times, Pat was recognised by Antrim County GAA for his contribution to the continued growth and success enjoyed by Kickham’s Creggan. John Shannon - Tug of War Representing Northern Ireland at National and International level, John was Front Man Pulling when they won gold at the 2008, 2010 and 2012 World Championships. His dedication and commitment resulted in him being the most highly decorated Indoor Tug of War Puller in Northern Ireland with eight World medals, a Chinese International Gold medal and numerous UK and Northern Ireland Championship medals. GALLERY OF SPORTING LEGENDS 2014 Leigh Roberts Bobsleigh Shortly after taking up Skeleton Bobsleigh, Leigh found herself competing at an International level winning several novice accolades before moving from Skeleton to 2-man Bobsleighing. Highlights of her career included winning ‘Best Female Driver’ at the British Novice Championships in 1994 and representing Great Britain at the 1997/98 World Cup Series where she achieved a remarkable 4th place before crashing and sustaining substantial injuries, forcing her to retire from the sport. Mark Tosh - Triathlon Winning numerous youth and junior titles at National and International level, Mark was selected in 1995 to represent the Irish Elite Men’s Triathlon team at World Cup level whilst still a junior. Competing for Triathlon Ireland, a highlight of Mark’s career were representing his country at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester. Mark now enjoys participating in some of the world’s most challenging endurance races and trains at Antrim Forum with the Hi Elbow Triathlon Club. Still going strong Some of our Legends are still going strong and continuing to achieve at the highest level: •Neil Booth won a Silver medal representing Northern Ireland at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow •A P McCoy reached a personal milestone by achieving his 4193rd Winner in July 2014 •Eugene Laverty is currently competing in the World Superbike Challenge and narrowly missed out on winning the Championship last season •John Jackson captained the Ireland Team last season and recently joined Reading Hockey Club, boosting his hopes of playing at the 2016 Rio Olympics The Gallery is at Antrim Forum. Why not come along and support our Sporting Legends? 6 Grow Your Own @ Antrim Allotments funded by Have you always wanted your own little gardening eden? Maybe you welcome the challenge of learning how to nurture your own fruit and vegetables. Antrim Borough Council is developing a shared spaces allotment project which is due for completion in early Autumn, on land adjacent to Greystone Community Centre. Allotment space is the perfect opportunity to grow your own produce and a new hobby! Each plot measures approximately 8m x 12m and can be rented at a discounted cost of £20 for the first year. There are still some plots available to both individuals and community groups within the Borough. So why not apply before they all go? Having an allotment can have many benefits including spending more time in the great outdoors, making you feel better and preventing illnesses. Growing your own can provide fresh vegetables, fruit and flowers which are free from artificial additives at a fraction of the cost you would pay in a supermarket. Allotments can also be a great way to socialise and meet new like-minded people. Did you know? Just 30 minutes of gardening on your allotment can burn up to 150 calories. To apply for a plot or to register your interest in future allotment projects throughout the Borough, please contact the Active Antrim Team T. 028 9446 3113 E. activeantrim@antrim.gov.uk Antrim Walking Group Schedule Date Walk Route Meeting Point 20 Aug Tardree Forest Duncan’s Car Park 27 Aug Larne Highway to Health Larne Leisure Centre 3 Sept Springfarm Rath Antrim Forum 10 Sept Tullygarley Wellington Church, Ballymena 17 Sept Mill Race Trail Antrim Forum 24 Sept Broadwater Tow Path Soldierstown Car Park 1 Oct Greenmount College Tirgracy Road Car Park 8 Oct Anniversary Lunch TBC 15 Oct Hazelbank Hazelbank Car Park 22 Oct Kay’s Caper Antrim Cineplex 29 Oct Gallagher Walk Wright’s Car Park, Ballymena 5 Nov Rea’s Wood Antrim Forum 12 Nov Ballyclare Riverside Ballyclare Leisure Centre 19 Nov Antrim Marina Antrim Forum 26 Nov Randalstown Forest Forest Car Park 3 Dec Highway to Health Antrim Forum 10 Dec Christmas Lunch TBC 17 Dec Greystone Loop Crosskennan Lay-by 7 Jan Castle Gardens Antrim Forum 14 Jan Tony’s Trek Antrim Cineplex Walks begin every Wednesday @ 10.15am All walks are free of charge, led by trained walk leaders and last approximately 1 hour For more information contact the Walk Leaders Sheila Thompson T. 07896 489 873 or Eddie Flack T. 07790 080 208 7 Kids Activities There’s lots to keep the kids active over the Autumn and Winter months! Indoors, as well as the existing hall, the new look centre will include a full size sports hall, new fitness suite, ten changing rooms, a meeting room, a new reception area and an extension to the car park to include a child friendly footpath/cycle path. Progress has already been made with the new community conference rooms, which were funded by GROW South Antrim and are already open. Featuring a mirrored wall suitable for dance classes, they are currently being used by many of the local groups. This exciting project will provide modern facilities for new activity clubs and services, which everyone can enjoy. 3G PITCHES In addition to the indoor facilities, the centre will also feature three new outdoor third generation pitches suitable for soccer, rugby and gaelic sports. Pitches throughout the Borough are always in constant demand, so these new facilities will be a welcome addition for many of our sporting clubs. It is envisaged that one of the pitches will be complete for late autumn 2014 with the building and remaining pitches schedueled to open in Spring 2015. Interested? If your sports club or group is interested in booking any of the new facilities at Crumlin, including the 3G pitches, please register your interest by contacting the Active Antrim Team T. 028 9446 3113 E. activeantrim@antrim.gov.uk 10 New Improved Play Areas Thousands of children enjoy many hours of fun at our Play Areas throughout the Borough. Back in 2010, new play areas were opened in Muckamore, Steeple and Randalstown and this year Council has invested in refurbishing the play areas at the Peace Park, Antrim Forum and Wallace Park, Templepatrick. Peace Park The Peace Park has been resurfaced, new equipment has been added and some of the existing equipment has been refurbished. The Peace Park has reopened and is as popular as ever! Wallace Park Council’s investment in Wallace Park will result in a complete revamp of the Junior and Senior play equipment. Additional funding from GROW South Antrim has supported this project and upon completion, the park will include a new Junior grass football pitch, a multi sport games area suitable for 5-a-side football, basketball and tennis and an outdoor gym trail. Works are due for completion Autumn 2014. Did you know... Outdoor play is a great way for children to build in exercise which can help increase energy levels, improve sleep patterns and generally help our children to be healthier. There are lots of other play areas in the Borough to choose from. For more information log onto www.antrim.gov.uk/activeantrim Pupils and Mr Cromie, Head Teacher of Templepatrick Primary School, gave Council and contractors their views on the plans for the new Wallace Park Play Area. More Outdoor Gym Trails for the Borough The Outdoor Gym along the Six Mile Water path in Antrim has proven to be a great success with adults of all ages and abilities making great use of it. Due to its popularity, a second outdoor gym has been introduced at Neillsbrook Community Centre, Randalstown and work is currently underway at Wallace Park, Templepatrick for a third. (Due for completion Autumn 2014.) These gyms, which consist of outdoor fitness equipment, are an ideal way for walkers or runners to incorporate resistance training into their exercise routine and are completely free to use. Perfect for beginners or the more athletic, the pieces of equipment include strength, balance, core, resistance and cardiovascular machines that are specifically designed for outdoor use. Each piece of equipment has a recommended routine on the sign however, if you are interested in a more enhanced training programme, please speak to one of the Fitness Instructors at Antrim Forum. Throughout the year, more than 1000 children from Primary Schools across the Borough took part in the Active Antrim Primary Schools Challenge events. Those pupils that showed exceptional talent at each of the events were then selected to take part in the Aspire Sport Programme which aims to develop specific skills and performance and is delivered in partnership with the sporting governing bodies. Following six week’s expert coaching in sports such as sports hall athletics, rugby, kwik cricket, orienteering, netball, cheerleading and crosscountry, the children were then invited to compete in a higher level of competition as part of the talent development programme. Anna Boyle, Sport and Physical Activity Manager with Antrim Borough Council explains; “It’s extremely important that pathways are developed to capture and nurture sporting talent. Sports hall athletics was a new event added to the Aspire programme this year and to have four pupils selected for a Northern Ireland team is a fantastic achievement and highlights the importance of talent development programmes such as these. I am looking forward to finding potential new sporting stars during next year’s programme.” For further information on the Aspire Sport Programme or the Active Antrim Primary Schools Challenge please contact Anna Boyle on T. 028 9446 3113 or E. anna.boyle@antrim.gov.uk 14 Couch to 5K Are you up for a challenge? The Queen’s Baton Relay, which symbolises the coming together of all Commonwealth nations and territories, began its journey on October 9, 2013 at Buckingham Palace when her Majesty the Queen placed her message to the Commonwealth into the Baton. Greeted by former Mayor of Antrim, Councillor Roderick Swann, the privilege of carrying the Baton was then handed over to young athlete, Elise McFarland, a member of Antrim Ladies Junior Netball Club who was recently selected for the North East Regional Development Academy. Did you know? The Queen’s Commonwealth Baton visited a total of 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth. The Relay covered 190,000km, the equivalent of going around the world’s surface nearly 4.25 times! The Baton received a joyous welcome from residents as well as local Antrim sports personalities Zoe Brown and Nordia Masters. Zoe, who attended her fourth Commonwealth Games this year, competed in the sport of Pole-Vaulting and Nordia was part of the Netball team who made history by becoming the first ever Northern Ireland team to qualify for the Commonwealths in the sport of Netball. As part of Antrim Forum’s celebrations the athletes spent time with local children who were taking part in various sports such as gymnastics, trampolining and netball. Antrim Forum was one of only a few venues throughout Northern Ireland chosen to receive the Queen’s Baton. The visit was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the outstanding facilities available at the Forum and for local children to share in the excitement of the Commonwealth Games. Antrim Forum Fitness Instructors work tirelessly to try and improve the health and wellbeing of those within the Borough. As well as taking new members through inductions, writing and monitoring personal fitness programmes and motivating customers, many of them work on additional specialised programmes in partnership with local health care services. To deliver these programmes, the Instructors attend intensive third level training courses to obtain the appropriate specialist qualifications. Programmes include: Cardiac Rehabilitation Cardiac Rehabilitation is a programme of exercise and information sessions for patients with heart conditions or those recovering from a heart attack or heart surgery. The aim of this 12 week programme is to understand your condition, introduce changes to your lifestyle that will help improve your heart health and to reduce the risk of further heart problems. Alan McCausland, Cardiac Rehab Instructor says; “This service is a lifeline for those members of our community who have suffered cardiac related health issues. The programme allows patients to build a healthy and active lifestyle around their condition in a comfortable and relaxed environment.” Health Matters Cancer Rehabilitation Healthcare professionals refer patients who are less active and suffer from mild/moderate health conditions to the Health Matters programme for a course of physical activity. During the 12 week programme, the Fitness Instructors work with the patient to develop a personal programme designed to improved their health and quality of life. This programme provides patients, including those in remission, with bespoke training programmes tailored to individual needs and abilities. Classes are taken by qualified instructors and provide circuit based exercises in a friendly and supportive group environment. They also provide valuable information on exercising both during and after cancer treatment. On completing her Cancer Rehab Course, Diane Patterson said; “This programme helped me to gently introduce appropriate exercise back into my life following my treatment. Taking part in the exercises boosted my energy and helped build my confidence as I prepared to return to work. It was great to meet other people who were in the same situation and would thoroughly recommend it to other cancer patients”. Did you know? Last year 164 completed the 12 week programme. 132 of these people went on to join the Fitness Suite and are still taking part in physical activity.
