With less than 3 weeks left there is still so much going on and I hope that we can continue to keep up this hectic pace right up until the end of the term. Recently we received our school’s NAPLAN results. NAPLAN is the national testing of all Year 7 and 9 students to ascertain each individual student’s development in relation to Literacy and Numeracy. I am very proud to say that our students achieved outstanding results and we were one of the only schools in Queensland that achieved results that were above both the state and national averages. Our students’ rate of improvement was also higher than most students in the state and nation. What was also a highlight was the high percentage of students in the top two bands for both Literacy and Numeracy results. This is an amazing result and congratulations to both our talented students and our dedicated staff who have worked tirelessly to provide the best education and support. Well done! We continue to be one of the leading academic schools on the Gold Coast and this is well supported by our NAPLAN and senior school results. All Year 7 and 9 families should have now received in the mail their student’s NAPLAN report. For a more detailed report on NAPLAN please go to www.qse.qld.edu.au Our Year 12 students are currently sitting the Queensland Core Skills Test; so much hard work has been done to ensure that they are the best prepared students in Queensland. We certainly wish them all the very best for this most important test and know they will do well. Congratulations to our staff for all their continued support and dedication to our students. We have had many students representing our school and achieving some outstanding results. As always our Performing Arts Academy have been leading the way with outstanding results at both Drama Fest and Eisteddfods. Our sporting stars have also dominated track and field at the Broadwater Carnival and on the Touch football field. Many of our students have also received awards for their results from various national academic tests including; Science, History, Mathematics and English. It is certainly going to be a very large awards program in Term 4 with the recognition of outstanding achievement of both staff and students. It is a wonderful service that we provide to ensure that all parents have the vital information in ensuring their child’s success in the senior years. A big thank you to our expert team for all their hard work! Our Homework Centre is certainly proving to be very popular however; we do ask all parents that students must be there to learn. It is imperative that students come to the Homework Centre with assessment or work to do. Teachers and tutors are there to help students with their homework or assessment; we do not offer extra classes at this time. We encourage all students to attend. This week is School Support Staff Recognition Week and on Friday we also celebrate Teacher Aide Day. It is important to remember these wonderful people in our school who ensure that teachers can continue to deliver outstanding teaching and learning each and every day. We thank them all for their support, dedication and commitment. In align with this I would like to again continue to draw your attention to the outstanding work of our staff in ensuring that all students have the best education on the Gold Coast. Behind every achievement of our students lies a very committed and supportive teacher. I am very proud that our outstanding results in all fields are starting to reflect the dedication and commitment of our staff. Together we are ensuring that our children have the best chances both now and in preparing for life after school. Mr Steve McLuckie Principal Southport State High Independent Public School Page 2 Calendar of Events Science The following are proposed dates on our school calendar. A more extensive version can also be viewed on our school website or app. SCIENCE & ENGINEERING CHALLENGE Twenty-eight students from Year 9 and 10 competed against 17 other schools in the Gold Coast Griffith Science and Engineering Challenge which was recently held at the Qld Academy for Health Sciences. Student teams undertook a number of challenge activities including designing, constructing and testing models of a bridge, an earthquake-proof tower, remote-controlled hover craft, and a Mars roving vehicle. On our competition day, the bridge team designed and constructed the lightest and strongest structure that only the ‘super-ingot’ load test could break it. It certainly looks like we have more fine young engineers in the making. Working with their mentor, Chef Paul from ICON Training, they created a dish that not only impressed the judges but rewarded them with a silver medal at the Gold Coast regional finals and a spot in the state finals at the Brisbane EKKA. As one of the top 12 teams in the state, Hayden and Laetisha battled against schools from Cairns, the Darling Downs, Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast in the live cook-offs held on stage in the Courier Mail Building at the EKKA and received a bronze medal. Overall, the Hospitality staff would like to congratulate Hayden and Laetisha on such an outstanding result and we wish them all the best in their future Hospitality endeavours. Ms Megan Cameron Teacher It was amazing to see how enthusiastically our teams competed, noting a podium finish in most of the activities. Well done! Congratulations to those students who took on the challenge to put their combined Science knowledge and skills to the test in a variety of thought-provoking engineering contexts. Mr John Parer HOD Science YR 11 BIOLOGY EXCURSION TO MT COUGAL NATIONAL PARK Our Year 11 Biology students ventured to Mt Cougal in the Currumbin Valley, as part of their study into ecology and the local environment. Thirty-nine students, Miss Rodas and I enjoyed the cool, clear and clean environment of Mt Cougal and the Southport State High Independent Public School Currumbin Rock Pools. The task for the students was to collect abiotic data from the three locations, including the final site near Palm Beach. The abiotic factors include the temperature, pH, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, nitrogen and many others. Students also attempted to identify some invertebrate species in the creek as they will be important during their assessment. This data will help the students decide on the abiotic factor they will investigate during their Extended Experimental Investigation (EEI) assessment. It is encouraging to see so many students actively engaged in collecting data and exploring the environment. Miss Chantel Rodas & Mr Pat Foreman Senior Biology Teachers Page 3 range of other Gold Coast schools, held at the Qld Academy for Health Sciences. The Challenge followed conventional trivia nights with 6 rounds of 8 thought-provoking questions, with students hotly contesting who knows the most Science trivia. Questions included, ‘What element on the periodic table has the shortest name?’ and ‘Which animal makes the loudest sound?’ In between rounds there was entertainment by way of ‘whiz-bang-pop’ hands-on Science demonstrations and brain-buster questions for the audience. Our students were placed highly in a number of the rounds and finished well up the leader board. Congratulations to Madeline BladockMcIlhatton and Sophie Bigum who did a fantastic job representing our school. Well done! Mr John Parer HOD Science Year 12 SCIENCE AND TECH FAIR The Gold Coast Science and Tech Fair was held on Saturday 16th August at the Broadwater Parklands. Southport State High School Science teachers set up a wide variety of demonstrations and displays including amazing microscope specimens, paper plane launching, interactive heart and lung models, and a plasma ball, just to name a few. Even though the weather was not that favourable, a large number of children and their parents visited and enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the displays. The day was fantastic and exciting with all displays being fun and educational. Thank you to Lachlan McKay from Year 10 and all the teachers who assisted, and to Mr Parer for the organisation and supervision on the day. Year 12 students wanting to go to the senior Formal - All outstanding school fees must be paid before payment for the Formal will be taken. English Calling all student reporters! How would you like the opportunity to write for the Gold Coast Bulletin? Would you like to write book reviews? Would you like to write music reviews? Would you like to review the latest game? Well, here is the perfect opportunity for you. Every Tuesday the newspaper publishes student reports in a pull-out section called, TXT4U. If you are interested in more information about this wonderful opportunity to have your review published and you are in the Junior School, please see Ms Finneran in the Synergy Building OR if you are a Senior student, see Mrs Norling in the J Block Staffroom. Mrs Celia Norling HOD English The Arts Jamie-Lee Lynch Year 12 Student GRIFFITH UNIVERSITY SCIENCE TRIVIA CHALLENGE On Tuesday 20th August, students from Year 8 competed in the Griffith University Science Trivia Challenge against year 8 and 9 students from a On Friday 15th August, four of our dance items competed in this year’s Gold Coast Dance Eisteddfod at the Arts Centre: Mrs Eales’ Contemporary and Musical Theatre items, and Mrs Andrews’ Jazz and Contemporary Items. All items were in sections of 20-25 schools from all over the state and some from NSW. The students did us Southport State High Independent Public School proud! They looked amazing and professional on stage in their costumes, and the adjudicators’ notes reflected this. Mrs Andrews’ Jazz dance to Warrior opened the section and was awarded a Very Highly Commended. In addition, all groups received positive comments of praise for their flexibility, extension, energy and use of formations to name a few. Page 4 Somerset College. Accompanied by Chaplain Paul McGuire, the boys – Kabilan Cholan and Jim Sarney from Year 8, and Tyler Deighton from Year 12 – played a number of games against some very tough opponents from other Gold Coast secondary schools. As a team, the boys did amazingly well, tying for 4th place with TSS a mere 1.5 points separating them from the number one position. At the end of the day, Kabilan Cholan took out the individual first place position having won all eight of his matches. Congratulations to the team on a truly tremendous effort! Miss Ky Hinselwood Dean of Special Programs – Junior Secondary International Study Tours There are two more items to compete, choreographed by Miss Brinsley, so stay tuned for more results! Thanks again to Rachel Cutajar and Kate Shepherd for supporting our acts on the day. Mrs Lee Andrews Dance Teacher Chess Champions On Thursday 14th August, the newly formed Southport State High School chess team – Southport Knights – entered their first tournament at For the first 3½ weeks of Term 3 our school hosted a number of students from China and Japan. As part of this experience these visiting students had the opportunity to integrate themselves into our normal classroom program and share the teaching and learning with their Year 8 and 9 buddies. To the school’s credit many students from our school were selected to ‘buddy’ our international visitors. All students conducted themselves impeccably and said that it was an enjoyable and rewarding experience, one they look forward to participating in again. As a new teacher to the school and being given the task of ensuring this program ran smoothly I would like to thank Mr Kenafake, Mrs Finlayson, Miss Wilson, Miss O’Toole, Mr Lawrance and Ms TugufaMika for their time and efforts in making the study tour such a great success. Thanks also to all teaching and non-teaching staff who welcomed the Southport State High Independent Public School overseas students and allowed them into your classrooms. Mr Blair Webster Teacher Sport VICKI WILSON CUP Players’ thoughts: On Thursday 7th August, two Southport SHS netball teams, ranging from Year 8’s to Year 11’s, competed in the state-wide competition, The Vicki Wilson Cup. The tournament was played at Runaway Bay Indoor Netball Courts, with a total of five games played by each team. There was a high calibre of opposition teams from all over Queensland, which left the girls with a tough competition. The girls had been training for the past three months every Tuesday and Wednesday morning, displaying great skills and teamwork which benefited them on the day. Both teams came close to making finals, which is a great achievement for all the girls. At the end of the completion one Southport SHS team was equal second on the ladder, however due to having a lower goal difference they missed their chance to move forward to finals. The girls cannot thank their coach, Miss Tufuga-Mika, enough for her continuous hard work, dedication of her own time to training, coaching and improving every player’s individual skills. Competing in this tournament for the first time was a great experience for Southport SHS, and all the girls should be proud of their efforts. The girls look forward to competing again next year, where they can hopefully achieve greater success. Chloe Leonard & Taylor Fitzsimmons Students Coach’s thoughts: I would just like to thank and congratulate all the girls on their tremendous effort and dedication to their training for The Vicki Wilson Cup. These girls came to training in the freezing cold, waking up at the crack of dawn on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings to prepare for this tough competition. At Page 5 the competition the professionalism and skill that I saw was amazing by all the girls involved. I am so proud of all the girls and their achievement at this competition. This was our first time competing and after seeing the competition and with the girls drive to improve, we will definitely have the competition next year and I look forward to it. The girls took the court with pride representing Southport SHS and played with such heart and soul. I would also like to acknowledge the injured players who came and supported their teams on the day even though they were unable to participate: Ashlee Taylor and Chloe Leonard. A huge well done and thank you to all the girls that participated - Marina Slomovic, Alannah Gordon, Zada Wright, Mautini Drader-Rapira, Sinead Flanagan, Taylor Fitzsimmons, Jaddah Tait, Tayla Maui, Jessie Kemp, Bianca Goodey, Alyx Johnson, Myah Kelly, Georgia Adamson, Keirra Lesa, Georgia Tatton, Ashlee Robba, Naomi David, Ebany Holamotu, Rose Kearsley, Oakley Strong, Kyla Major, Caitlin Parsons, Sunshyne Te-Amo and Haze-Lee Martin.
