Joyce passed from this life to the next this past Thursday morning (January 10th). Our hearts and prayers go out to Arlie and all of their children and grandchildren. While we are saddened for them, we rejoice knowing that she is with our Lord. Joyce was a faithful child of God’s. She was a tremendous example for all who knew her. We are so thankful that God allowed us the opportunity to know this wonderful, Godly woman. May we all keep the Neal family in our prayers as they go through this time of grief. The funeral will be at Collier-Butler Funeral Home on Sunday, January 13th. There will be a visitation from 1-3 pm with the funeral at 3 pm. Arlie Neal 221 Lakepoint Drive Gadsden, AL 35901 Our iDisciplettes continue to stay very busy as one of our ministries here at Rainbow. On Saturday, January 19th at 6:30 they are hosting an appreciation dinner for the ladies who have opened up their homes and hearts to this ministry this past year. The McCarver Visitation Team will be kicking off a new year for the visitation ministry by meeting at the home of Milton & Charlotte McArthur on Sunday, January 20th following our evening worship service. All members of this visitation team are encouraged to bring their favorite soups or chilli. If you are not a part of our visitation ministry, we would love for you to come join us. What a great opportunity to get involved in 2013. If you have any questions about this uplifting ministry see Doyle MCarver. Our iDisciple ministry will be having a devotional on Friday, January 18th, at the home of Dave and Jessica Lasseter at 6:30 p.m. What a great way for this dynamic ministry to kick-off a new year. If you or someone you know is between the ages of 19-29, this is a tremendous ministry for them to be apart of. Several weeks ago we had a special prayer request for Beulah Sylvis, the sister-in-law of Treva Jones. Sister Sylvis had to have her leg removed due to poor circulation. While she has remained in good spirits since then, we found out this past week that now she is going to have to have the other leg removed as well. Let’s keep our sister in Christ in our prayers as she goes through this very challenging time. Hispanic Ministry Underway! From left to right: Francisco Mateo, Cristobal Echevarria, Alvaro Earlington, David Domingo, & Carolos Perez We are not even two weeks into this New Year and already great things are happening here at Rainbow! John Bowling (on behalf of our Eldership) shared with the congregation that we have begun a Hispanic work. This past Thursday, January 10th, five of our Hispanic brothers in Christ met with Blake Jones and Dave Lasseter as they planned out this work. The men are enthusiastic and it is evident that they are soul winners! They have already been door knocking and are having a weekend Gospel Meeting as they begin this work. Each Sunday at 3 pm in our fellowship hall there will be a Spanish speaking worship service. On Sunday, March 24th, the Hispanic work will be joining our regular Sunday morning worship assembly and we will be having a special bilingual service that day with a fellowship meal following so that we can all, no matter our race, be one. (Galatians 3:26-28) You may have noticed something different about the message on our sign this past week. It advertised a Gospel Meeting that was held this weekend as our Hispanic ministry is now underway. The Gospel Meeting was on Saturday and Sunday. In next week’s Beacon we will inform you on how this great event went. We ask that you be praying for this ministry as it begins. TO GOD BE ALL THE GLORY! Responses We had three souls respond to the Lord’s invitation this past Sunday requesting prayers for various reasons. Tina Quarles wrote, “My father’s health is failing. I am asking for my church family to pray with me as I help my father. Pray that I make good decisions for him.” Brenda Windham wrote, “I want to be more involved and dedicated.” Blake Jones wrote, “With a New Year comes great reflection on the past as one looks forward to the future. With this reflection, it has caused me to realize the need to recommit myself to God, my family, and my ministry. In the past there have been too many times I allowed myself to be distracted, disappointed, and discouraged as a result of situations and circumstances around me, which were beyond my control. I allowed the Devil to win far too many battles in my every day life, simply by losing focus on what was most important—the will of God. At times my attitude and actions did more harm than good and I am incredibly sorry for that, please forgive me. I wasn’t the Christian man, husband, father, brother in Christ, or minister that I needed to be...I want to do better. I consider myself so blessed to be a part of this congregation and to call you my family...I love you all very much. My hope for the New Year is to simply be a better me in 2013 and for that to happen, I ask that you pray for me. Please understand that my resolve is not to please you or to please me, but rather to be more pleasing to my Lord with every new day that He gives me.” Tina Quarles 112 Joan Street Albertville, Al 35950 Brenda Windham 1127 Lakemont Drive South Southside, Al 35907 Blake Jones 210 Calhoun Circle Rainbow City, Al 35906 Here at Rainbow one of our goals is to provide opportunities to strengthen our physical families, which in turn strengthens our spiritual family. What better way to strengthen one’s family, than beginning by strengthening one’s marriage. With that we are excited to share with you the opportunity to be a part of the Great Smoky Mountain Marriage Retreat in Pigeon Forge, TN. The dates for this event are February 15 - 17 (just a month away). The cost for the event is $35 per couple ($25 if you register before January 15th) and the cost of your lodging which is $81.99 per night...estimated cost for registration, room and meals is $250 per couple for the weekend. For a complete itinerary of the scheduled weekend, there is a brochure on the bulletin board in the hallway or you can go to smokymountainmarriage.com If you are interested in being a part of this great weekend or have any other questions, just see Cheryl Bowling or Suzi Morgan. Edmonson Era Coming To An End If you have not already heard, Tracy Edmonson handed in her two week notice on Friday, January 4th. She has accepted another job in town and it is with heavy hearts we see her go. Tracy has been our church secretary for the past five years and she has done a wonderful job. It is not just Tracy’s office/accounting skills which have made her such a valuable asset to our ministerial team...it is also her integrity. She is a Christian woman with such strong character...a tremendous example to all who know her. While we hate to lose her as a part of our staff, we understand and wish her well with this new chapter in her life. We are thankful however that she and her family will still be a part of Rainbow’s family. Thank you Tracy for all you have done for us! With Tracy’s resignation, the church secretary position is now available. Our Elders are seeking resumes for this important position. The job does require bookkeeping and accounting experience. See Craig King or Mike Bowdoin for more details. Pew Packers meets TONIGHT following our evening worship service for a time of singing, learning, and laughing with Blake and Dave. We’ll have it immediately following our evening worship service...all are invited to come…don’t worry kids, there will be plenty of candy to share with you for coming. Can’t wait to see you there! Each month our Elders take a turn sharing the responsibility of “Elder of the Month”. During that month, that Elder is the contact person for our flock for any needs that they might have. During the month of December John Bowling is the “Elder of the Month” you can reach him at (256) 328-4727 (James 5:14).
